LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT Dear Country Day Families and Friends, What a year! On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff, thank you to everyone who offered their generous support to Country Day through 2022-23. In a tough economic market for many, marked by steadily rising interest rates, inflation, and a lackluster stock market, you stepped up for the school, helping us to achieve our fundraising goal for another year. We are sincerely grateful. Country Day Fund The Country Day Fund, the school’s annual giving campaign, contributed more than $1 million to the operating budget. These crucial funds sustain the breadth and quality of the educational opportunities our students enjoy. Among other areas, funds were invested in the expansion of professional development opportunities for faculty and staff, new wellness and belonging programs, development of new CCDX Week offerings, and investment in faculty compensation packages to attract the brightest and best teachers to our school.

Endowed Funds At fiscal year-end, the school’s endowment stood at $30.9 million, an increase of $400,000 on the previous year, after providing more than $1.5 million of funds to the 2022-23 operating budget and benefiting from $500,000 of additional investment from generous donors. In total, 49 donors made contributions to the endowment during the year, with funds directed to a range of needs, including faculty support, the Triumphant Scholars Program, and need-based tuition aid. Among the donations, we received a six-figure gift from an anonymous donor to establish a hardship fund, dedicated to providing tuition relief to families struggling with the unexpected death or severe incapacity of the primary income earner. As with all our gifts, this generous donation exemplifies our motto, Virtue in Action, and we are deeply grateful to the donor for making such a heartfelt commitment.

Strategic Plan In June 2023, the Board of Trustees approved the school’s new strategic plan, Country Day Connect. This plan, the culmination of more than a year’s work and involving input from a wide range of stakeholders, charts a course into Country Day’s second century. We are presently working to refine the priority initiatives that will see the plan turn to action and have set a goal of identifying funding requirements by the end of the year. This is an exciting time for Country Day! Verging on the school’s centennial, we have a clear vision that builds on our legacy of

academic excellence and points toward an even brighter future. None of this would be possible without the dedication and generosity of so many in our community. Thank you for all that you do. Sincerely,

The 2022-23 academic year was another solid year for net tuition, annual fundraising, and summer camps. These strong results were offset by additional spending on salaries and benefits and by significant spending on capital projects that addressed transportation and deferred maintenance needs.

Mark and Jocelyn Ellington had an important decision to make: where to send their daughter, Aurianna ’31, to school once she finished kindergarten. As they began their search, one school kept popping up on their radar: Cincinnati Country Day School. When the Ellingtons were on campus for a new family welcome tour, they listened to a senior, who was addressing the new families from a podium, talk about how the entire school rallied around him and supported him when his mother died when he was in Lower School. After hearing that story and learning about what a special community Country Day is, the Ellingtons’ thoughts were dominated by a vision of Aurianna speaking at the same podium as a graduating senior. And ever since her first day in first grade, Aurianna has been busy making her mark. As a third grader, she pitched her idea to create a diversity and inclusion group to Mark Morawski, the head of Lower School,

and two other faculty members. They were so impressed by Aurianna’s presentation that they turned the concept into a course the following semester. And then as a fourth grader and leader of the Respect house, Aurianna and her friend Shreena Choudhury ’31 were given the green light by Morawski to start a before-school book club that focused on the Percy Jackson novels. “Country Day is different than other schools because they teach kids to be leaders and risk takers, not to just be the best workers,” says Jocelyn. “Aurianna is so self-sufficient and independent, and knows who she is. She feels comfortable voicing her opinions. And the school respects her voice, which boosts her self-respect. Her educators continually listen, respond, and act on her ideas. What other school does that?” And those unique and dedicated educators are why the Ellingtons give back to the school. “Teaching is such a hard job, so we feel it’s important to give back. These teachers have given so much to Aurianna and our family that it’s fitting to support them.”

Keeping the Country Day Legacy Going 26 | CCDS 2022-2023 Annual Report

Emily (Bahl) Salzman ’03 and her siblings (Jeff ’98, Andrew ’00, John ’06) have always prioritized donating to causes that are important to them as a family – such as health organizations, the arts, and educational institutions like Country Day. “We have never questioned why we give back,” says Emily. “And while we all agree that we donate to Country Day to pay it forward to the next generation, we all have our personal reasons as well. For my brothers, athletics was an important part of life for them. For me, it was extracurriculars. Activities like the peer mentor program my senior year, student tutoring as a math helper, and helping backstage for the plays and musicals were some of my favorite experiences during my time at Country Day.” Emily was a lifer who started kindergarten at Country Day in 1990. She now has two children enrolled in the school – Evie ’40 and Nick ’38. “It’s a special attachment you have to a school when you’ve been there for 13 years. And then to bring my kids back to where I spent those 13 years…life does come full circle, doesn’t it? It makes supporting the school much more important to me; it’s the right thing for me to do so that my kids – the next generation – can keep Country Day’s legacy and the groundbreaking work going.”

“The time I was at the school was unique. We spent freshman year in the trailers because the new high school was being built. That was a special couple of years with a brand-new school and a whole different attitude and shift to being more modern. I was part of the 1996 laptop program when we were the first school in the country to pilot such a thing. Country Day was always one step ahead; huge leaps were made while I was there with the tech boom happening all around us. It was cool to be at Country Day during these big shifts; we were all learning so much about technology along the way.” Emily feels it is important that people give back to the school so the current and future generations have a similar or even better experience than she had. Recently, the school received a significant gift from the Bahls through their family foundation, the Bahl Family Foundation, which their father, Bill Bahl, founded years ago. “It’s our family name attached to the foundation, so we want to make sure the causes we support align with our family’s interests and values. My dad always instilled in us that it is important to give back to places that helped us get to where we are and that are important to us. We want the school to keep thriving for generations to come and to continue staying one step ahead.”

The school was certainly experiencing some groundbreaking advancements during Emily’s years at Country Day.

THE RIPPLE EFFECT Dr. John Hall and Dr. Sarah Knox

“We’ve loved all aspects of our involvement with Country Day. We enjoy games, events, and Grandparents Day. We just have such warm feelings toward the school. Country Day really gave us a community as parents, and our children – and now our grandchildren – have all had rich, unique experiences at the school even though they are all so different. My only regret is that not all children get to attend such an excellent school. When I first visited Country Day, I was struck by the beauty, thoughtfulness of design, and the planning to create a setting to support and nurture the growth of children emotionally, socially, and intellectually. CCDS nurtures a strong sense of community with engaged faculty, parents, administration, and staff; it has always been clear that generations had contributed to the development of this special community. Continuing to support the school is an opportunity so that more children and families can benefit from all the school has to offer.” – Dr. Sarah Knox

34 | CCDS 2022-2023 Annual Report

“One of the best things you can give to a child is a good education. It has a ripple effect – they will then, in turn, make use of that education to hopefully make the world a better place. That ripple effect continues through generations. Country Day should continue inspiring and educating children and helping them grow meaningful connections and that doesn’t happen in isolation. The generations need to be there for one another, and supporting the school is one way we can do that. We give back to foster that ripple effect – Country Day was such a good experience for our children, and I want our grandchildren to have that as well. They will have some wonderful memories and unique educational experiences that will endure for the rest of their lives because of the school.” – Dr. John Hall John and Sarah are parents to alumni Ceridwen Hall ’05, Alanah Hall ’11, and Luke Hall ’13; grandparents to alumni Catherine Collett ’20 and Kyle Collett ’23; and grandparents to current students Beatrix Collett ’29 and Mabel Collett ’31. John is also parent to Vanessa Collett, CCDS Montessori teacher.

Confidently Making a Difference in the World

Lauren Hannan Shafer ’84, current Artworks board chair and former CEO, has lived and worked in some of the most notable cities in the country – Boston, New York, Denver, Seattle. She moved back to Cincinnati when she wanted to start a family and be closer to her parents. She felt there was an opportunity to make Cincinnati just as great a city as the other cities she previously resided in. “I always felt like Cincinnati was very community-oriented, and would be a great community to raise my kids in. My parents always said that Cincinnati was ‘the best home base you can ever have.’”

36 | CCDS 2022-2023 Annual Report

When the time came to decide where to send her kids to school, she knew that Cincinnati Country Day School would be the right place to educate her children. Shafer knew from her first-hand experience what type of community her three daughters (Isabelle ’15, Sophie ’17, Celie ’21) would grow up in. “At Country Day, students are treated as equals and with a ton of respect. Country Day taught me and my daughters that it’s okay to lean on each other and learn from each other. And the Country Day community continues to be like a family for us, even after graduation.” Shafer also knew that the Country Day faculty is second to none when it comes to preparing students for the real world. “I appreciate how my teachers helped me be a person who cares about others and who wants to make a difference in the world. There is so much generosity and kindness at Country Day that it makes you more confident. And I think if kids can be confident, they are ready to make a difference.” Even after her three kids graduated from Country Day, Shafer thinks it is still important to continue giving back to the school. “It’s important to recognize the people and places who helped you succeed along the way. Country Day was essential for me and my kids to feel confident about going out into the world and taking on its challenges.”

VALIDATING THE WORK WE DO

Sher Lathrop has worked at Country Day since 1999, when she joined the Business Office team as the benefits coordinator. “My first impression of the school was the campus. Coming from Summit Country Day, which is landlocked, to this beautiful campus was impressive.” Twenty-four years later, she says it is the community and the spirit of the place that has kept her here and inspires her to give. “There is a sense of very deep purpose here and it’s one that we all support and nurture. When you see these kids and what they’re doing…the awesomeness of it all, I think the whole physical place and mentality of everyone on campus supports that. We want students to thrive now because they are going to go out and make the world better. Supporting the school makes you feel a part of that deep purpose and it validates the work we do every day and what you think of the work we do every day. I’m doing my part to fund something that will be a great influence on the world.”

Yvonne Cuffy and her husband, Madison, selected Country Day for their children in 2013, when their oldest child, Alana ’28, was in pre-kindergarten. “We toured other private schools but when we visited Country Day, it felt like the right place for us to be,” says Yvonne. Both she and Madison are doctors with the University of Cincinnati (anesthesiology and transplant surgery, respectively) and value the school community and the time they get to spend together as a family through Country Day activities – from neighborhood gatherings to all-community get-togethers like FallFest to sporting events. “I’m passionate about the education and the experience my children [Sasha ’31 and Alana ’28] get here at Country Day, which has helped shape their personalities. The teachers are

nurturing and enthusiastic about helping the kids reach their full potential. And I feel it’s important to give back because there are a lot of resources the school needs that tuition on its own simply cannot provide, resources that enrich the experiences all the children are fortunate to have.” Yvonne has also served on the board of trustees since 2021, which has provided her with the opportunity to make even more connections within the community as well as get a better understanding of all the challenges and nuances of day-to-day decision making at the school. “There is only so much time we have with our kids. They spend a good amount of their time at school. My involvement at Country Day gives me more insight into their community, which has become our community.”

CountryDate is one of the school’s most significant fundraising events, and it is only possible through many helping hands. Johanna Brun, a Country Day parent, is involved with the school through both the Parents’ Association and as an avid supporter of CountryDate. For Johanna, CountryDate is not only a community-building event, but also “a time to celebrate the achievements of the past year, look forward to the next year, and reinforce the idea that we succeed by coming together for the improvement of the community and for the benefit of our children.” When her family first came to Country Day, she was grateful for the ways the teachers seemed to really know her children and, at the same time, welcomed her as a parent and a part of the school community. “We appreciate being in a community of likeminded individuals who value the education of our children and put effort towards that goal.” For this reason, Johanna chooses to invest her time through volunteering with events such as FallFest, faculty and staff appreciation week, and CountryDate. “A school like Country Day doesn’t work without participation from the students and families. Everyone has something to give, whether time, talent, or resources. We have nothing to lose by giving.”

SUCCEEDING by Coming Together

CountryDate is the school’s annual community gala, with net proceeds directed to the Country Day Fund. The event was held on Saturday, March 4, at the Little Miami Brewing Co. It was a wonderful night filled with games, dancing, conversation with friends, and delicious food! CountryDate 2023 raised $120,000 toward the Country Day Fund’s goal for the year. Thank you to everybody who joined us and contributed to this special night. CountryDate is a community event in every sense. It would not be possible without volunteers to plan, set up, and tear down the event, donations of time and talent by our dedicated teachers, and the many cash donations received.

Endowment + Capital The foundation for the school’s ongoing financial security is provided by the school’s endowment, comprising more than 65 individual funds. These funds are built through cash gifts made to the school over many decades. The majority of our endowed funds, designated by the original donors, are used to fund student tuition awards, provide faculty resources, and support the development of specific programs. At fiscal year end, the school’s endowment stood at $30.9MM, an increase of $0.4MM on the previous year, after providing more than $1.5 MM of funds to the 2022-23 operating budget and benefiting from $0.5MM of additional investment from generous donors. As with all our gifts, we are deeply grateful to the following donors.

school’s rigorous academic curriculum and faculty pushed him to pursue his career path. “Country Day helped gel my interest in science. We were exposed to broader elements of American culture, which was very helpful in shaping my academic career and how I think about the human brain.” It was also at Country Day where Dr. Fred, as he is referred to by his staff, formed bonds with his fellow classmates, Harry Jackson ’71 and Reggie Garret ’71. He refers to his friend group as the “blue-collar crew” due to their similar upbringings. “Our parents deserved a lot of credit because they made it possible for us to attend this incredible school, compete in athletics, and attend other school events.” Schmitt and his “crew” also all received financial assistance to make their Country Day education possible. Schmitt never found out who paid for his scholarship to attend Country Day (although he does have a sneaking suspicion), but he feels very lucky to have received the opportunity to attend the school. “Without an endowment, I feel that my path would have been different. Based on my conversations with friends from my old neighborhood, I gained more skills to get me through my college years as compared to my peers who attended my local public school.”

Dr. Frederick Adrian Schmitt ’71 is a professor of neurology at the University of Kentucky, with a primary focus on the evaluation of brain aging and the evolution of dementia in neurological illnesses. His long list of accolades and accomplishments includes developing new methods for assessing treatment effects of Alzheimer’s disease and Down Syndrome in the general population, creating the first demonstration of HIV’s impact on neurocognition and response to antiretrovirals, publishing more than 300 scientific papers, and winning countless awards and recognitions that would take an eternity to list out completely. But where did Dr. Schmitt’s passion for science and helping others begin? It was right here at Country Day where the

He continues to give back to the school so that others who come from similar backgrounds can have the same opportunities that Country Day provided him. Schmitt believes it is extremely important to support the development of people who want to make a difference. “The history of the graduates of Country Day shows people who not only do things to help themselves but also do things that help others. People from my class went into medicine, religion, tech, law…you know, fields that help people. You learn selflessness and teamwork at Country Day, and to me, that’s the key and I want to support that.” Schmitt summed up his thoughts about being a Country Day alum and supporting the endowment fund with these words, “By going to Country Day, I found a pot of gold. I don’t know who put it there but now I am adding to it.”

Dr. Frederick Adrian Schmitt ’71 (pictured 5th from the left) and classmates from the Class of 1971 attended the Alumni Breakfast in 2021 to celebrate the selection of Dr. Rodney Geier ’71 (pictured 3rd from the left) as the 2021 Virtue in Action award recipient.

Starting with a Vision Regina and Dereck Gray have lived all over the world but are happy to now call Cincinnati home. “We have lived in Cincinnati for the past nine years and find it to be a great place for families. It has everything you need and most of what you want, and we’re happy to call Cincinnati ‘home,’” says Dereck. The Grays moved to Cincinnati from Singapore in 2014 and selected Country Day after hearing about the school from P&G colleagues. “The school has a great reputation; we mostly heard about it from an academic standpoint, but when we researched the school what intrigued us the most was the diversity of the student body,” explains Dereck. “In Singapore, my sons [Dereck, Jr. ’21 and Donovan ’25] were attending a massive, international school; they had friends from all over the world. Coming to Cincinnati, we wanted to continue with the high degree of education but also make sure our kids continued to benefit from learning and working within a diverse environment. We did our research and learned about the school’s mission and its efforts to attract a wide array of students from across town and across the globe. At first, we were a bit skeptical – we didn’t quite believe it, but when we walked in the door at Country Day…that instant I knew this was the school for my kids.” Dereck has served on the Board of Trustees for the last four years and has co-chaired the EDI [Equity, Diversity, Inclusion] committee as well. Regina has helped with FallFest and other community events. Despite their busy professional lives, both feel that it is important to be engaged members of the community.

“We believe in what the school is trying to do. It’s a leading school, from an academics’ standpoint, and we love what it is trying to do from a diversity standpoint – serving kids from across the city,” says Dereck. “We want to do what we can to help the school build and sustain a competitive advantage and continue to see enrollment grow.” For them, being engaged also means giving back. “We are trying to help the mission of the school. We know the school wants to serve students in every way possible and we want to help move that along as fast as we can, in any way we can,” explains Dereck. “And when it comes to the athletic field… well, you don’t want to be worse than your competitors in any area. Athletics is an important part of the educational experience. When you visit a campus, the physical environment says a lot about the school – and the old field was not a good reflection of CCDS. We all knew it and wanted to upgrade it, but we weren’t sure if it would be possible. This was a major topic for the Board of Trustees for quite some time, but in 2021 we decided to take on the challenge. It started with a vision, then the other trustees and I asked the question ‘what needs to be true to make this happen?’ Soon thereafter, the clouds parted and the sun came through in the form of big donors, which fueled our enthusiasm. Regina and I said, ‘let’s put our money where our mouths are’ and we jumped in and did just that.” Dereck believes that capital improvements not only present our students with a better educational experience, but they also reflect the dedication of our community. “Country Day is a unique offering in that it is really trying to create the best possible environment for students and one that is reflective of the world. It’s the school’s competitive advantage and we must foster that to make sure it remains a distinguishable difference. It’s why I give back.”

Impact THE

OF DONOR-FUNDED TUITION AID Anna Haas had no idea how much her first meeting with Casey Wolford, our head chef with SAGE Dining Services, would impact her family’s life. “I work in local food distribution, connecting farmers with buyers. I came to campus to meet with Chef Casey [Wolford] because SAGE buys local farm products through my company. My daughter [Saoirse ’36] was one at the time and I knew she would need childcare. Casey happened to say something about the Early Childhood program and how it provides organic food and outdoor education and that was the spark.” Anna says that it’s not only the healthy food and outdoors that keep her family here.

56 | CCDS 2022-2023 Annual Report

“We stay because of the school’s values. We stay because of the social-emotional learning and the specials, like outdoor education, art, swimming, world languages, and music, that I feel that other schools have moved away from.” And while the Haas-Stewart family receives tuition aid, they also do what they can to give back. “I’ve done things like bidding on class gatherings at CountryDate. Our participation in the auction not only supports the school but also brings long-term memories that make us feel closer to the other families in the class.” She also tries her best to connect with people one on one when she is on campus. “Saying something friendly to another parent or child, holding the door, sharing a smile. Just that feeling of being seen and respected is so important to our sense of community, and it’s important for our children to see us modeling that behavior. The more engaged I am and our family is, the more we feel we are a part of this wonderful community and that we’re cared for and known and nurtured as well.” Anna is happy to make the sacrifices they make in order to send their children [Saoirse ’36 and Eamonn ’38] to Country Day because this is the community they choose. “Our family is extremely grateful for the partnership we have with CCDS in the education of our children and the community we all co-create to support them and their peers. We are incredibly appreciative of the investment that CCDS and its donors are making. This is the dream school.”

The 1926 Society The 1926 Society recognizes individuals who have made a planned gift to CCDS through bequests, trusts, or annuities. These individuals know through firsthand experience the power of a Country Day education and have chosen to give back so that others in turn can benefit. We are deeply appreciative of their commitment. Their contributions will change students’ lives forever and strengthen the school as it moves forward into a second century.
