Dear Members of the Country Day Community,
The 2023-24 school year was a significant one for Country Day:
• We announced our new strategic plan, which prioritizes experiential learning, exceptional teaching, and connected community;
• We were at the forefront of the national discussion around smartphones in schools with our new “away for the day” policy, which led to a positive cultural shift towards more focus in the classroom and more connections among the students; and
• We made important strides in planning for our centennial in 2026.
As we look forward to celebrating a century of excellence next year, we look back at last year with pride at the continued growth of our legacy.
Beyond our major strategic progress, the year was filled with successes in a range of endeavors. In fact, it was hard to keep track of all the awards that came our way. After being selected as one of eight finalists across the country, our Upper School InvenTeam spent the school year creating their patent-pending “Illumilane” invention and received the coveted Golden Beaver Award at MIT’S EurekaFest this past June – the highest honor given by the Lemelson-MIT program. Given that national success, it is perhaps not surprising that Niche.com ranked CCDS the #1 school for STEM in the Cincinnati area. But that’s not all. CCDS was also ranked the #1 overall private high school in the Cincinnati area and #1 K-12 school in the Cincinnati area.
Success was plentiful in other areas of student life. The arts program continued its ascent, with participation at recent highs in theater and choir, and a thriving Arts Alliance. In athletics, the girls soccer team won their second consecutive state championship – their fourth in six years; the football team had a historic season; and there were district titles again for baseball and girls basketball. But we took special pride in another honor: Our community was recognized for its integrity and sportsmanship in soccer, earning the first-ever Outstanding Sportsmanship Award.
At Country Day, though, we are not solely motivated by external validation. Sometimes the most important honors are those you bestow on your own community. Therefore, it was with tremendous gratitude that we recognized Tim Dunn, an outstanding teacher and coach for 35 years, as an inductee into the CCDS Athletic Hall of Fame. This event allowed generations of CCDS community members to reflect on his legacy of education in the classroom and on the athletic fields. For we know that at the heart of any success lies a great teacher.
As we plan for the future, we are buoyed by tremendous community momentum, including record tuition revenues, historic enrollment demand, and robust philanthropic engagement. In our 99th year, Country Day is as strong as ever.
We will continue to build on this momentum as we look ahead to the 2024-25 school year and beyond. Our centennial in 2026 represents a historic opportunity for the community to come together, celebrate our legacy, and invest in our future. Later this year, we will announce more details about our plans to ensure that we continue to deliver transformational experiences for another century. To do this, we know that we must go all in with a campaign far beyond what we have ever achieved before.

Dear Country Day Families and Friends,
Each year, Country Day is supported in its mission by more than 1,000 generous donors, each of whom makes it their mission to invest in the education of our students. We are deeply grateful to these individuals, who go above and beyond to give back for the benefit of others. They live the school’s motto: “Virtue in Action.”
2023-24 was a strong year for fundraising. The Country Day Fund raised more than $1.1 million, surpassing its goal and allowing the school to make critical investments in its faculty and programs. Among notable characteristics of this generosity:
• Participation among our parent group increased, with 43 families making a first-ever gift to the Country Day Fund, many of them in their first year as parents at the school.
• Our leadership donors (those giving $2,500 or more) – including parents, alumni, and grandparents – continued to extend their year-on-year giving. Their generosity has been essential in helping the school to mitigate cost inflation over the last three years.
• 76 families sponsored our annual community gala, CountryDate. The event saw record ticket sales, with over $140,000 of net proceeds contributed to the Country Day Fund.
Aside from annual gifts to support the operating budget, Country Day receives many gifts each year that are directed for specific purposes. The school relies on such gifts to invest in its buildings, evolve and innovate its program, and offer need-based tuition assistance. Among gifts this year:
• A lower school family gave $250,000 to renovate and upgrade the lower school’s courtyard playground. The beautiful space now includes new climbing and imaginative play equipment, outdoor toys, and natural planting.
• An alumnus invested $100,000 in the Class of 1971 Scholarship Fund, building on previous gifts they had made. The fund supports need-based tuition scholarships.
• An upper school family extended their support of the arts with a $100,000 gift to fund priority upgrades to Keeler Theater.
• Three upper school and alumni families made generous gifts to support experiential learning opportunities through the Investment Club and the continued growth and development of the Chess Club.
• 20 donors supported the InvenTeam in the creation of their patent-pending road bicycle safety invention. The team’s incredible success is owed in part to the generous support they received.
• 40 families became members of the Arts Alliance in its inaugural year, supporting ongoing investment in our arts program.
While this is an incomplete list of the many gifts we received, these examples serve as a reminder of the myriad ways in which our parents, alumni, grandparents, and friends contribute to the education of Country Day’s students.
As the school heads towards its centennial in 2026 and embarks on a campaign that envisages deep investment in our campus and programs, shaping a Country Day education for generations to come, we recognize that none of this would be possible without the dedication and generosity of so many in our community. In 2023-24, revenues benefi ted from an increase in net tuition, driven by full capacity enrollment across most grades and supported by a year-on-year increase in tuition price. This, combined with strong fundraising and full enrollment in our summer camp programs, delivered just over $20 million in net revenue.
Revenues were directly off set by expenses. The school continues to balance an increased investment in salaries and benefits with tight cost control. Infl ationary pressure across all cost categories has been a key feature of the last three years. All offi ces have been challenged to meet tightly controlled budgets and seek available effi ciencies. 2023-24 saw continued investment in deferred maintenance and campus enhancements. Among investments this year were:
• A new chiller system for the main school building
• The purchase of a 48-passenger school bus
• Installation of improved lighting in the parking lots

The Country Day Fund supports every aspect of the Country Day experience: program enrichment, small class sizes, professional development of faculty and staff, our wide range of athletics, arts and extracurricular activities, and much more. Over 1,000 donors made gifts to the Country Day Fund in 2023-24, either directly or through participation in CountryDate. Gifts ranged from $10 to over $30,000.
This year, we introduced fi ve friendship societies for gifts up to $2,499 to better recognize the generosity of our donors. These societies are included in our annual report for the fi rst time.

“The most important thing the school can do for me as a parent is see my children as the unique individuals that they are,” says Tiffany Dickerhoof. “And at Country Day, they are really seen, known, and loved for who they are; they’re not just numbers or students in seats.”
Parent to Gracie ’26, August ’26, Charlotte ’27, and Sam (St. Xavier ’23), Tiffany Dickerhoof has a long history of generous leadership giving to the Country Day Fund. But for her and her family, giving runs deeper than just supporting Country Day as an educational institution.
“An outstanding education is one of the most important values for our family,” says Tiffany. “We get so much from the school and there is so much yet to come that the kids will look back on and realize was foundational to their lives.”
The children enrolled at Country Day in February 2021, after years of attending the Cincinnati Waldorf School. Tiffany felt that Country Day possessed the strong academic program she wanted for her children as well as a depth to the arts program, which they have certainly
immersed themselves in. August is the lead sound engineer and does Keeler Crew with Evan DiTullio; Gracie has been involved in photography and tech theater and has held the role of properties master for the last two years; and Charlotte is involved in choir and has been doing make-up, costumes, and hair design for the theater productions – although this year she’s itching to get back on stage.
All of this tracks, considering Tiffany and her late husband Bryan always had toes in the arts. “I believe the arts are a vital part of any education. Humans are creative beings, and the arts are fundamental to the human experience.”
Following Bryan’s passing in 2018, a charitable giving fund was established in his name – the Bryan O. Dickerhoof Legacy Fund – to honor his commitment to philanthropy. Tiffany said they always valued donating to educational institutions as a cornerstone of giving through the fund.
“My husband, Bryan, passed away prior to the kids attending Country Day but this is the dream we had for them,” says Tiffany. “We made it a priority to give our kids the best education. I absolutely love that a Country Day student can play golf or tennis at the high school level even though they haven’t been playing since they were three years old. I appreciate that the school gives the students opportunities to take trips and get involved in the community through acts of service. We give to the school in Bryan’s honor as his legacy and commitment to education and to the arts. It’s a way that Bryan can be a part of this experience at Country Day and connects our whole family to the school.”
Tiffany remarried in 2022, and her second husband, Carey, sadly passed away in September 2023, but not before experiencing what an incredible experience the children were having at Country Day. Tiffany said she’s grateful for that, too. “Carey was with us when the kids made the transfer to Country Day. He was at every arts event, every choir performance, every play, all the community nights, and opening football games. He also loved the international component of the school; he spent a huge part of his career working abroad and knew how important it is to have a global mindset.” Tiffany gives to the school in Carey’s name because a strong, well-rounded academic experience was a priority for him as well. Speaking openly, Tiffany said it took some time for the kids to adjust to the school’s rigorous academics, but that the Country Day community has been supportive every step of the way and through so many meaningful gestures.
“It’s been an incredibly difficult six years for our family and every day my kids go to school I know that somebody is keeping an eye on them and cares just as much about their education, as well as their physical and mental health, as I do. It’s a collaboration between me, the faculty, and the administration to grow and develop these children, so I feel less like a single parent and more like I have a partner and a team. If there are pieces I am missing because I have my hands full, I know someone has my back; the teachers genuinely care. I don’t think anyone has four kids and thinks they’re going to be a single parent one day, and that’s been hard. But when [Upper School librarian] Mr. Tracey-Miller saves a book for Gracie because he knows she would like it…it’s something her dad would have done.”
Tiffany said education will always be a cornerstone of their giving.
“When I’m gone, I hope the children will continue this legacy. I feel grateful to be able to give, whether it’s through the Country Day Fund or as a sponsor for the play, in little ways or in bigger ways. Although Bryan never got to experience our children’s lives as Country Day students, I know he would be thrilled.”

You will be hard-pressed to find a bigger advocate for all things Cincinnati Country Day School than 2005 graduate Sally (Dwyer) Hernandez. Sally began attending Country Day in fourth grade, and ever since then, Country Day has made an enormous impact on her life.
“I have always loved school, but Country Day made it even easier because they made it fun,” says Sally. “The teachers were just so smart and caring. I always felt supported to be who I was and to do what I wanted; I never felt like I was being steered down a specific path.”
Along with being supported by the faculty at Country Day, she also felt extremely close to her classmates.
“We all really liked being around each other, even with everyone having such a variety of interests,” she says. “People supported each other by going to sporting events or by going to the latest theater production.”
Along with sending her three school-aged children (Gracie ’36, Abbi ’38, and Ollie ’40) to Country Day, Sally is heavily involved in almost everything on campus. As an active member of the Parents’ Association, she is a lead representative for families who have kids in first grade through fourth grade, which allows her to not only help other Country Day families but gives her the chance to “gush” about the school to them. She’s also a member of the Alumni Council, is co-chairing and sponsoring CountryDate for the second year in a row, and regularly contributes to the Country Day Fund.
When asked why she contributes so much to Country Day, Sally says, “It’s important for me to teach my kids to give back to those who have positively impacted your life, to show your heart, and to show how much you care about people who have helped you.”
“I feel privileged to have gone to Country Day,” Sally continued. “I also feel like it’s a duty of mine to give back to the school and show appreciation however I can, whether it’s by volunteering my time or by contributing financially.”
For families that might be nervous about committing to weekly or monthly volunteer opportunities, Sally’s advice is to simply get started in any way you can.
“Big or small, getting involved is a great way to show your support or gratitude. You’ll be surprised at how fun it can be to meet new people. The community is a big reason why I stay so involved. Country Day is such a unique place with this incredible community that is so connected and supportive and open to talking to each other; I think it’s the best.”

While Ruthie Keefe has had connections to the Cincinnati Country Day School community her entire life, it wasn’t until her grandchildren – Florence Off ’36 and Bert Off ’36 – started attending school at Country Day that she felt the relationship really began.
“There are three things that I was pleasantly surprised about when I dropped the grandkids off on that fi rst day of preschool,” says Ruthie. “First, I wasn’t the only grandparent nor the oldest; second, it was so wonderful to see all the different types of families that were entering the school with me; and third, the teachers are incredible and what they do to support the kids and their families is clearly unmatched.”
For Ruthie, as is the case for many Country Day family members, the teachers are more than “just” teachers; they have also become friends who talk football during the Bengals’ season and stop to chat during school events.
“They embrace me as much as I embrace them. They know how important the family structure is, and they truly love the kids. Just having a degree doesn’t mean anything, it’s living the life and walking the walk, and I see that in the teachers every day at Country Day.”
And this sense of community – of family – is what compels Ruthie to give.
“What drives me to support an organization is that I can actually see the dollars at work in a very effective way, and that is absolutely the case with Country Day,” says Ruthie. “I’m a fi rm believer in time, talent, and treasure, and we need all three to make a school great. But at the end of the day, you need treasure to keep the lights on and I am fortunate that I can give my treasure.”
Ruthie certainly knows a thing or two about the impact of giving of one’s time, talent, and treasure.
She is known around the city as a major mover and shaker in the world of fundraising, serving as a past president of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as well as a board member for USO Cincinnati and the Lindner Center of Hope’s Guild (High Hopes), among other volunteer efforts. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the University of Cincinnati Foundation and as the immediate past chair of the UC Alumni Association.
“It sounds like a lot but when you grow up in a family where the importance of philanthropy was taught and encouraged, it’s almost second nature to give back in some fashion. And I get to support the organizations – like Country Day – that mean so much to me. It’s all been great fun.”

Almost 30 years ago, beloved piano instructor Elena Belfor-Sigalov was teaching students at both Summit Country Day School and at Cincinnati Country Day School. When the time came for her to decide between the schools, she chose Country Day.
“Teachers and children here at Country Day are accepted and supported for who they are,” says Belfor-Sigalov.
“The relationship between the students and the teachers is like a family. And that was so important to me when I decided to teach full-time here. It was more than words –kids actually felt like they were part of a family.”
Elena works with students as early as Pre-Kindergarten II through their senior year. She not only shares her musical expertise and worldly knowledge with her students, but she also supports them by giving back to the school and the arts by donating to the Country Day Fund.
“I want our school to be the best in the world, and donations allow the school to improve the education and the experience we provide to the kids.”
Elena continues, “As someone who has been a teacher for a long time, I believe the arts play such a valuable role in developing our children into amazing humans. It’s important to give them opportunities to try different things and present them with new challenges. I am proud to teach my students that it is okay to make mistakes because that’s how you grow up – by learning from your mistakes.”
By supporting the arts at Country Day, Elena believes she is not only supporting the students, but also her fellow art teachers.
“We work at one of the most wonderful, beautiful schools in Cincinnati, and we need financial support so we can continue to provide our students with the best resources possible.”

Woody is parent to Elizabeth ’31 and a long-serving member of the Board of Trustees (he is in his eighth year on the board) and currently its vice president.
You’ve been a long-time leadership donor to the Country Day Fund and most recently donated to the stadium renovation project in 2021. As a trustee, why do you feel it’s important to support the school in such a generous way? Country Day provides a rigorous education while nurturing vital character values. As a result, graduates are not only prepared to navigate the wider world, but they are motivated to make it a better place. Giving back is part of that culture because it pays the benefit forward.
The school is coming up on its 100th anniversary, a big milestone for the school. As is the case with some of your fellow trustees, you plan to be heavily involved in the centennial campaign, which will be no small undertaking. What do you hope to accomplish by contributing to this eff ort?
Any long-standing, successful institution needs to continually invest in its people, facilities, and programs in order to maintain its excellence. Country Day is no different, but right now the school is on such a sustained upward trajectory that it requires substantial investment to support and enhance that excellence. Investments in our campus and our outstanding educators will further enable students to learn and explore their interests to the best of their capabilities. That’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?
How do you think Country Day fi ts into the fabric of the greater Cincinnati community?
I think CCDS holds a vital place not only in greater Cincinnati, but regionally and nationally as well. If you look at the roster of alumni, you’ll see graduates all over the country in a wide variety of fields – from medicine and the law to entertainment and politics. Those alumni bring the school’s education and character virtues to the world, and many times they move back home, bringing their experience and knowledge back to Cincinnati.
When people look back at us 100 years from now, what do you hope they will say about the school?
The same things people are saying now: Country Day provides a tremendous environment for our children to learn and grow.

When Ben Stacy was asked by fellow parent and Board of Trustee member George Vredeveld if he would help him out with the Country Day Investment Club, it was an easy “yes.”
“We wanted to bring an opportunity to learn more about financial literacy to the students in a hands-on way. Our goal was to build a foundation for the students so they feel comfortable working in a career in finance or running their own business.”
With that goal in mind, Ben provided the support of his company, The Sprenkle Stacy Wealth Management Group of Merrill Lynch, to get the Investment Club started. The first objective of Investment Club was to learn how to allocate real dollars to a long-term investment strategy which they successfully achieved. From there, the students began learning about entrepreneurship and eventually created The Birdfeeder, a successful studentrun business that sells snacks and drinks to Country Day students located next to the Dining Terrace.
“It makes the experience for the kids more real when you are using and growing real money,” says Ben. “The next goal for the students in the club is to figure out how to make an impact beyond the club walls. We’ve discussed using the profits to support philanthropic endeavors, and if that’s the case, we have to figure out who or what we are going to support. We don’t quite know yet, but we’ll help the students find the answers along the way.”
Supporting the students in Investment Club was very personal to Ben.
“One of the things I have realized is that I’m very passionate about mentoring, coaching, and teaching, so it was a natural connection for me [to get involved with the investment club],” says Ben. “I believe financial literacy is very important for kids, so this is one way that I can give back.”
Ben and Kelly, whose three children Ben ’20, Zach ’22 and Lizzy ’23 graduated from Country Day, believe it’s important to continue supporting Country Day, even though they no longer have children attending the school.
“There’s this notion that Country Day is this fully funded school, but that’s not true,” says Ben. “Having three kids attend Country Day was a big financial commitment for our family. Fortunately, we benefited from generosity of other Country Day supporters through scholarships. We were given a great opportunity, and we want to do what we can to pay it forward and support other students and their families.”
Ben continues, “As you get older and wiser, you recognize the value of a good education. Country Day was transformational for our kids’ development. The quality of learning is top-notch. And I think having a well-rounded point of view earlier in life helps the development of good people, which is exactly what Country Day does. It’s a gift to continue to be part of this great community and help others.”

CountryDate is the school’s annual community gala, with net proceeds directed to the Country Day Fund. The event was held on Saturday, March 2, at the 20th Century Theater in Oakley. It was a wonderful night filled with live music, dancing, conversation with friends, and delicious food! CountryDate 2024 contributed more than $140,000 toward the Country Day Fund’s goal for the year.

The foundation for the school’s ongoing financial security is provided by the school’s endowment, comprising 64 individual funds. These funds are built through cash gifts made to the school over many decades. The majority of our endowed funds, restricted for specific purposes by the original donors, are used to fund student tuition awards, provide faculty resources, and support the development of specific programs.
At fiscal year end, the school’s endowment stood at $34.8MM, an increase of $3.9MM on the previous year, after providing more than $1.5 MM of funds to the 2023-24 operating budget and benefiting from $0.3MM of additional investment from generous donors.

Country Day’s beautiful campus and facilities are built almost entirely through the dedication and commitment of generous donors. For almost 100 years, alumni, current and former parents, grandparents, and friends of the school have invested for future generations of students.

A mechanical engineer by education and training, Chuck Fullgraf ’71 is now technically retired but he’s always up to something.
From amateur sports car racing to flying planes, from amateur radio to his beloved horses and ponies, Chuck has never been one to sit back and watch the world go by. Even as a young man, Chuck was known for his hobbyist nature, as acknowledged in his senior yearbook: “There are a lot of aspects in the life and curriculum of C.D. [Country Day] that are to Chuck Fullgraf a mere distraction. If you have ever been in his hobby shop you see why...His interests range from science to science with detours to art when he designs cars and makes posters.”
If you want to spend time talking with a man of many passions, Chuck is your guy. Including his passion for Country Day and the impact it has had on his life.
“Country Day prepared me for life,” says Chuck. “[Science teacher] Mr. Laird got the school involved with computers and technology before any other high school, so when I went off to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for college, I was better prepared than my classmates. I also learned how to be efficient with my time and how to study at Country Day. My college roommate was valedictorian of his high school in Long Island, and he studied like a dog, whereas I took time off on the weekends, so it aggravated him to no end that we were both getting the same grades.”
Self-described as a fairly tight-knit group, the members of the Class of 1971 wanted to create a fund to commemorate their 50th reunion. And through the Fullgraf Foundation – an endowment fund his father created before his passing – Chuck was able to help launch the 1971 Scholarship Fund, which provides tuition assistance to students.
“We want to be remembered for doing something positive for this school that gave so much to us,” says Chuck. “I hope the school always maintains a presence in the community. In addition to being a formidable educational institution, Country Day also stresses the importance of giving back, which is something I’m able to model for today’s students. It’s fun to be able to support the organizations I’m passionate about, organizations I want to see thrive.”
In addition to donating to the 1971 Scholarship Fund, Chuck is a long-time donor to the Country Day Fund.
“I want to help Country Day budget their expenses so they can provide extra experiences to the students. I hope the school continues to be considered at the forefront of education, staying up with technology and teaching while keeping the smaller class environment for the students. I give to help make that possible; it’s that simple.”

When Addison Woodward moved to Cincinnati from Minnesota in 1956, he and his family needed to find a high school midway through his junior year. As he searched for the right one, he happened upon Cincinnati Country Day School.
“Country Day was more of a two-by-four kind of place at the time because they were getting ready to move into a new building the next year,” says Addison. “But I felt that the teachers were wonderful and that it was going to be an easier school for me to adapt to.”
When Addison visited Country Day, the campus was in the middle of a major renovation, but Addison was able to see past the construction and sense that the school would be a good fit for him.
Football season just ended when Addison enrolled at Country Day, so he joined the basketball team and started practicing right away.
“I was a good athlete at my previous school,” says Addison. “So, joining the basketball team, and, in the spring, the baseball team, allowed me to easily make new friends and adjust to life at Country Day.”
Addison appreciated the small class size at Country Day because he felt like he could develop friendships more easily. Even now, he still keeps in contact with a few of his classmates by attending mini-reunions in Michigan, Tennessee, and New Mexico.
After Addison graduated from Country Day in 1958, he received a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Toronto. He taught psychology at Albion College in Michigan for four years and then moved to Governors State University in Illinois where he continued to teach psychology for the next 30 years, for 23 of which he was the chair of his department.
Life had pulled Addison away from Country Day as an institution but one day, former Country Day faculty member and alum William (Bill) Hopple Jr. ’39 called Addison to let him know he was in the Chicago Heights area and wanted to see if they could get together.
“We didn’t visit for very long, maybe 30 or 45 minutes, but after being away from Country Day for about 20 years, that random call and short visit with William got me reinvested in Country Day.” From then on, he has been a generous supporter of Country Day. “The first gift is important,” says Addison. “Once you begin supporting something you believe in, it’s easy to keep giving.”
Even though Addison graduated almost 70 years ago, he still generously gives to Country Day.
“When I was at Country Day, there was no diversity,” says Addison. “But I really appreciate what they are doing now with their efforts to significantly increase diversity. I usually donate to support tuition aid so that deserving people from all backgrounds can attend such a great institution.”
The 1926 Society recognizes individuals who have made a planned gift to CCDS through bequests, trusts, or annuities. These individuals know through firsthand experience the power of a Country Day education and have chosen to give back so that others in turn can benefit. We are deeply appreciative of their commitment. Their contributions will change students’ lives forever and strengthen the school as it moves forward into a second century.

Ohio taxpayers may claim a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for donations made to an approved scholarship granting organizations (SGO).
