Virtue in Action Dear Members of the Country Day Community, It takes a community to raise a child, and at Country Day, we have a powerful one. As the head of school, I have learned much about Country Day during my first two years, and a key observation involves the passion and vitality of our extended community. I have spoken with hundreds of CCDS stakeholders – parents, grandparents, alumni, friends of the school – about their relationships with Country Day. While each experience is different, there are common themes: a love of teachers who made a meaningful difference; shared experiences that put students on a path with purpose; a whole-person, educational approach that has given graduates manifold abilities to ensure positive outcomes. One CCDS community group that is “all in” is our alumni parents. Their involvement is palpable. As parents, they witness the day-to-day difference a Country Day education has on their children; as alumni, they are the beneficiaries of an academic

4

environment that prepared them to lead fulfilling lives. Their dual perspective has created some of the school’s most ardent supporters. Every day on campus, I experience the added impact our community members bring. Whether providing essential financial support for new or ongoing initiatives or volunteering for the school’s many events and activities, we are a better, stronger school thanks to their involvement. Please enjoy the enclosed profiles of some of our donors and volunteers whose selfless giving greatly enhances the student experience. They are living examples of “virtue in action,” and we, as a school, are deeply grateful for their loyalty to Country Day. Sincerely,

Anthony T. T. Jaccaci Head of School

Virtue in Action

Introducing

Campaign Co-chairs Jody Brant ’87 Rob Zimmerman ’98

J

ody Brant ’87 and Rob Zimmerman ’98 attended CCDS a decade apart, but their Country Day experience has much in common. More than anything, they are bound together by a community of remarkable students, teachers and families.

While CCDS has substantially improved its brick and mortar imprint over the last 20 years, this campaign is the first significant investment focused on people in recent years. The campaign’s goals are to increase muchneeded resources for faculty and student support, to enable the implementation of exciting Country Day FORWARD initiatives, and to secure the school’s financial vitality.

“I have fond memories of my time at Country Day as a student. What I remember most is the people. It’s the teachers, the coaches, the friends, the colleagues, and the families.”

Besides their alumni status, Brant and Zimmerman each have two children enrolled at the school – Samantha Brant ’19, Nora Brant ’21, Harrison Zimmerman ’28 and Graham Zimmerman ’32. Brant’s and Zimmerman’s wives are not native Cincinnatians, so when it was time to search for schools for their children, the two alumni didn’t insist on Country Day. They wanted their wives to be equal partners in the selection process.

That makes them an ideal pairing to chair the Blue & White Triumphant Campaign, the recently launched endeavor to raise endowed and immediate use funds.

Brant and Zimmerman have seized their new roles with verve. “The fact that this campaign is directed to people is very important to me,” Zimmerman said.

6

Because Blue & White Triumphant is dedicated to enhancing the experiences of teachers and students, it was easy for Zimmerman to embrace his role in the campaign.

“An endowment is not just a measure of financial vitality of the school, but a gift that keeps on giving,” Zimmerman said. “An endowment campaign is something that builds on itself and can go a significant distance in securing the school’s legacy.” Brant, too, shares Zimmerman’s sentiments. “I know the importance of building endowment for the financial sustainability and vitality of the school,” Brant said. “If we build the endowment, that gives us the ability to move the school forward in meaningful ways - a more competitive pay scale for teachers, innovation in learning and teaching, and diversity and scholarship programs.”

The Brants looked at public and private schools. “Both of the private schools we looked at had lots of plusses,” Brant said. “But, there was a warmth I found at Country Day. I couldn’t tell if it was because of my familiarity, but in the end, my wife felt it, too.” The Zimmermans lived in Hyde Park when their oldest son was born, and they looked for an early childhood program. His wife liked a program at a school close to home.

Leadership

Eventually, he scheduled his wife to tour Country Day and was reassured to hear her feedback. Both on the tour and during Harrison’s first year in Montessori, she repeatedly used the phrase “warm fuzzies.” The source of those “warm fuzzies” was the people of CCDS. “She immediately felt the sense of community at CCDS; the teacher was a partner in raising our son, a feeling she never had at Harrison’s prior school. She used to say, ’I just get warm fuzzies every time I drop him off at school.’ There’s something to that. It’s hard to

quantify those intangibles, but they’re real.” “That’s been a good measuring stick for me, and it’s made for an even more positive experience to know that it’s not just my fond memories that have led us here,

but a truly positive and impactful experience for someone who did not have prior experience with Country Day.” The school has changed in the nearly 20 years since Zimmerman attended, and he’s glad it has. “As incredibly positive as my experience was, I very much hope my children do not get the same education I did, because it’s a different world. Country Day has to change to grow. It has to address the world as it is now.” “It will always have that Country Day DNA, that same sense of what makes the school unique

and special. Part of what makes Cincinnati Country Day School unique and special is its willingness as an independent school to evolve and develop and to face the challenges of the future, which is what we’re preparing our kids to do. We have to do that.”

Triumphant Campaign, as well as past campaigns.

Despite their busy lives, Brant and Zimmerman, both attorneys, accepted the role of campaign co-chairs because of their commitment to Country Day’s teachers and students. Both are members of the Board of Trustees. Brant is chair of the board’s Development Committee. Both have served on the school’s Alumni Council. Zimmerman is currently president, while Brant left the group after serving two three-year terms.

Now, Brant and Zimmerman want to ensure that current and future students have those same opportunities for a world-class CCDS education. With their leadership on the Blue & White Campaign, they will help propel Country Day FORWARD!

Their Country Day experiences continue to resonate decades after they graduated. They are who they are today because of the opportunities a Country Day education provided.

They have been energized by their involvement at CCDS, and they encourage others to get involved in the life of the school, by volunteering at the Parents’ Association functions and FallFest, opening their home for an event, talking to new parents or any of the multitudes of ways to help. “Seeing parents volunteer for the school sends a strong, positive message to their children,” Brant said. Besides giving their time and talent, Brant and Zimmerman also give back financially to the school, as leadership donors to both the Annual Fund and Blue & White 7

Richard Schwab

Class of 1967 Middle School Fund

Deane, a lifer who attended CCDS for 13 years, said he received an excellent education. “I likely use what I learned at CCDS more every day than what I learned in college and graduate school since one’s elementary and secondary school education sets the foundation for your communication and thinking skills,” Deane said. Since his father was a teacher at CCDS, Deane attended school tuition-free. “I was taught that one should always

give back. I owe CCDS for all those years and have tried to give back continuously for most of the years since graduate school.” “While I am not in Cincinnati and my children received no benefit, generations before me gave to CCDS so that I could have a good education. It is the responsibility of those of us who can to give back so future generations can have the same or better opportunities.”

Celebrated 50th reunion at Homecoming 2017

I

nspired by his 50th class reunion in September, Gordon Deane ’67 is leading the charge to create the Richard O. Schwab Class of ’67 Middle School Fund. During the Alumni Breakfast, where Schwab ’67 was awarded the Chieftain Award for community service, Deane challenged his classmates to help feed the fund with a goal of $150,000. Funds will be used to support middle school faculty and students. Reaching that mark will also enable the naming of the middle school office. “Large gifts often come with naming opportunities, so naming the Richard O. Schwab Middle School Head Office – given in his honor by the class of ’67 – seemed to be an appropriate approach,” Deane said. “Also, the objective was to try to start a tradition. While other classes have raised funds, this was to set a higher standard for others to follow.” Schwab was the senior class president and returned to CCDS where he served as middle school head for 20 years. Deane, Craig Maier ’67 and Schwab have each contributed $25,000 to the fund to match contributions from fellow classmates and other contributors. “It’s been more successful than I would have expected at this stage, but we still have a long way to go,” Deane said. Why do they give back to CCDS? Photo provided. If you can identify any of the students not named, please email Paula Brock at brockp@countryday.net

8

Leadership Maier gives back because of the education he and his three children received at Country Day. Avery graduated in 2013 and Alexander and Taylor in 2015. “I received a great education at Country Day. It stood me in great stead when I went off to college. I knew how to study and how to go about it. It got me into a good graduate school and a successful life,” Maier said. “Our opinion is if you feel like something was a benefit to you or is a benefit to you, and you have resources, then it’s a responsibility to make sure that whatever organization – whether it’s Country Day or a college or arts and cultural institutions - is available for those who don’t have the resources.” Schwab spent decades of his life at Country Day as a student and then as middle school head from 19862006. “I choose to give back to Cincinnati Country Day because the school has had such a positive impact on so many lives - including mine. Country Day taught me to live a life guided by kindness, generosity, and style. Country Day motivated me to try to make a difference.” Quoting Winston Churchill, Schwab added, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

Raise the Paddle

Cincinnati Country Day School’s largest fundraising event of the year, CountryDate: Committed to the Future, was a success with nearly 300 guests attending the event at Renaissance Hotel downtown. All proceeds have an immediate impact on the lives of the students, faculty, and staff, as well as the programs that truly strengthen the CCDS experience. Momentum for CountryDate 2017 began earlier in the school year with two events: CountryDate: Committed to Community – Bonfire & Brews; and CountryDate: Committed to Service. The students were also encouraged to sell $50 raffle tickets for a chance to win the grand prize of a new Mazda Miata convertible or $20,000 cash, generously donated by Matt and Marianne Castrucci and the Matt Castrucci Auto Mall of Dayton. Special thanks to CountryDate Chair Nick Recker and a host of volunteers who made the event a huge success.

love this school,” his mother Josie Thayer said. “Will spent half of his life here. He started at age 4 and graduated at 18, so it was 14 years, and he only lived to the age of 28. He really, really loved it.”

Sixty family members, friends, and teachers gathered to reminisce about Will and help plant one of the 67 trees that will comprise the arboretum along Given and Shawnee Run roads. The trees will be a metaphor for Will, a big guy who stood 6'4" with broad shoulders.

“Most people who think about Will, who really knew him, would smile right away, remembering him,” she said. “He was a very good and loyal friend. He adored his family.”

“We think the arboretum is a wonderful idea because Will did

“Will felt very much at home at Country Day,” his sister Abby Thayer Esselen '00 said. “He also was very confident here. He knew everybody, and everybody knew

“He loved challenging teachers and teachers who would challenge him,” his father, Abbot Thayer ’71 added. Among his favorites: Merle Black, Howard Brownstein, Steve Conner, Tim and Pat Dunn, Park Gilmore, Bobbie Menter and Rick Van Nuys, most of whom attended the dedication. The young man with a wry sense of humor had many friendships that extended beyond one circle of friends. When Will passed away of a heart attack in 2015, a friend of his wrote a note to the Thayers, saying Will always treated the younger football players nicely. “He loved sports,” Josie said. “Sports meant the world to him here. He got into football in both Middle School and Upper School. and he really had quite a nice football career. He loved Mr. Dunn and won some awards his senior year. That meant a lot to him, as did his friends on that team. I think his Country Day years were very happy years” During the dedication, Tim Dunn recalled Will’s rare physical transformation over four years from a pudgy ninth grader on the football field to a dominant physical lineman.

“He was still the gentle giant around the hallways at school with his friends, but he wasn’t a gentle giant on the football field.

He didn't change physically for himself, but rather for his teammates. He knew they relied on him to be a dominant force on the line of scrimmage his senior year, to be a leader – not a flashy leader – but a true leader.”

“You will be missed like the

shade of a glorious tree that always covered us in some great gift no one else could ever give. We will never get over you. We will never forget you. We will never not miss you.” -Lauren Seamon

“Will was very good, but he was no superstar football player. He was the kind of person all teams need – athletic or otherwise. He did the necessary, difficult and unnoticed work. Will was the best of teammates. Ask anyone. A loyal friend. A great teammate. I'll take that over a superstar any day.”

Will’s older brother, Richard Thayer ’03, acknowledged that the longest and most treasured friendships for him, Will, Abby, and Abbot were built at Country Day. “We had such terrific coaches, teachers and administrators who care about us so much. That so many of them are here today is not only incredibly touching, but a perfect portrayal of their character and commitment … I do believe that it takes a village to raise a person, and we want to thank all of you for being a part of that village that helped raise my brother. He was one of a kind.” Head of School Tony Jaccaci

thanked David and Vallie Geier Tapke, both ’05, and Bill Hopple ’71 who joined forces to galvanize their classmates and friends behind making this living tribute to Will a reality. Speaking on behalf of her husband and the Class of 2005, Vallie said they and their classmates had the distinct privilege of having Will as part of their Country Day experience. “Will always stood out as someone who was able to easily mix with multiple groups of friends. This was a reflection of his intelligence and ability to carry on conversation about anything – from politics, to sports, to pop culture. It's impossible to forget his great sense of humor, which was driven by his incredible wit and entertaining sarcasm. It's fair to say that wherever he went, his presence was felt and appreciated.” “We know that this living

memorial will forever remind us of the times we spent with Will and the joy we experienced as a result of being around him.” Vallie closed with Lauren Seamon’s poignant poem that she wrote about her cousin Will, and read during her eulogy at his memorial service. “You will be missed like the shade of a glorious tree that always covered us in some great gift no one else could ever give. We will never get over you. We will never forget you. We will never not miss you.”

The Thayer Arboretum will be comprised entirely of native species of trees. So far, the variety includes junipers, yellowwoods, redbuds, paw paws, tulip poplars, elms, beech and swamp white oak trees for a total of eight different genera. By its completion, 67 trees with 14 different genera will be planted. During Middle School Make a Difference Day, when students venture into the community to volunteer, science teacher Dan Wood and his seventh-grade advisory stayed on campus and planted trees. He shared information about Will with his advisory group before heading to the arboretum site. 27

ountry Day’s football practice field has experienced a muchneeded makeover, thanks to Jeff Bahl ’98 and Chris Bortz ’92. Both alumni were familiar with the field because of their roles as assistant football coaches. “The conditions were not to caliber with the rest of Country Day’s campus and other athletic fields,” said Bahl, who just completed his fourth season as assistant coach. Football is unique in that the ratio of practice/preparation to game28

Bahl & Bortz Improve Practice Field time is incredibly high, Bahl said. “Over the course of the season, we will spend approximately 150 hours on the practice field, versus 25 hours on the game field. Therefore, the condition of the practice field is integral to the experience of our student athletes.” “Chris Bortz and I decided that if we wanted to maintain the successful tradition of Country Day Football and the positive development of young men, the conditions and standards had to be raised. To attract the most well-

rounded student athletes, we must deliver a great experience that is from the classroom, practice field and, ultimately, game conditions.” The entire football practice field was renovated with donations from Bahl and Bortz, who was an assistant football coach for two years. Renovations included inground irrigation and sodding the entire field, which is also used for lacrosse. “Jeff and I share a passion for Indians Football and felt repairing the field was another way we

could put that passion to work,” Bortz said. “A much-improved practice facility helps build the momentum for the football and lacrosse programs and is another cherry on top of the vastly improved athletic facilities led by the generosity of the Wright and Leonard families and the development of the Leonard Athletic Center and Wright Tennis Complex.” “Jeff and I followed that example, and we hope others take up the challenge to ensure our athletic facilities reflect Country Day’s

commitment to excellence.” “First-rate athletic facilities complement and enhance the student experience, highlight the importance of competitive athletics within the school’s mission, and signal to current and prospective students our school community’s focus on continuous improvement across all elements of the Country Day Experience.”

CCDS Internship program flying high

ith help from an internship arranged by CCDS, Katie Barton’s post-college career plans are coming into focus. Barton ’14 is a senior at Dickinson College, where she majors in international business and management.

She worked for 10 weeks as a public relations intern for Tuke, whose clients include dress designer Elizabeth Kennedy, shoe designer Malone Souliers, two jewelry companies, and an interior design company.

She studied abroad last fall in London, where she took classes that sparked her interest in marketing, PR and fashion. When she returned, she began thinking about summer opportunities.

“Meeting the designers was really a cool experience, and Tuke has many connections. Everyone knows who she is,” Barton said. While she didn’t get to meet any celebrities, she was in contact with Rihanna’s manager.

“Katie brought her enthusiastic spirit and eager nature to every task. She learned how to follow her intuition and approach each day with confidence in a high stress industry – fashion PR.” Elizabeth Tuke Dake ’00 Her mother showed her a Country Day Connections article about Elizabeth Tuke Dake ’00, CEO of TUKE Consulting, who works in the fashion industry in New York. Barton contacted Director of Alumni Relations Paula Brock who connected her with Tuke.

been able to do. New York opened a lot of doors, which is really important for the post-grad job search.” She encouraged other college-age CCDS alums to pursue similar internship opportunities. “Reach out to these alumni. Everyone has been more than willing to help. Connections really help, especially coming from a great school like Country Day. We have these connections, and it’s just a matter of putting yourself out there and getting out of your comfort zone.”

Part of Barton’s job was reaching out to Vogue and different outlets to pitch client products. “Also, they would come to us. Vogue would email me and say, ’We want this pair of shoes for the September issue.’ We had everything in the office, so our job was to get it to them and make sure it was shot.” She also helped with a press day where writers and editors came in to look at the new products and then featured them in articles. Since Tuke shares an office with another company, Nylon Consulting, Barton worked for both businesses, but mostly Tuke. “Nylon is kind of the same idea, but it’s all luxury brands, such as wallpaper and lighting. A lot of it is interior-design based, which is

really interesting. It was fun to get both sides – fashion and design.” The biggest surprise during her internship was the pace. “I was expecting it to be a little slower, but it’s a super-fast pace. It never slows down. I love that about this industry. I was never bored. There was always something for me to do and learn.”

The experience has helped narrow her choices for post-college jobs. “Honestly, before this summer, I had no idea what I wanted to do. After this summer, I really loved being in New York and doing PR, working with fashion consulting and also meeting all these people.” “Tuke was a big help with meeting new people, putting my name out there and getting experience doing things that I wouldn’t have

“In hiring a Country Day alum, there is an initial bond and level of trust that typically takes a long time to establish between an existing team and new headcount. Katie is a tremendously hard worker and we look forward to watching her as she develops over the years.” Elizabeth Tuke Dake ’00 29

ddly enough, a crockpot galvanized David and Joy Blang to spearhead an effort to replace an aging scoreboard with the sleek new version on the south athletic fields. It’s not uncommon for parents and athletes to tailgate and celebrate on the fields with food and refreshments. “About two years ago, someone plugged in a crock pot and it blew out the scoreboard,” Joy said. “That was when we started talking about doing this. So, it was the crockpot that drove the decision.” The Blangs’ children, John ’18 and Caroline ’21 both play soccer. John started attending CCDS in the fourth grade and Caroline in the first grade. “Soccer was our first experience here,” Joy said. “It helped us and the kids get to know each other and all of us to become part of the Country Day community, because 30

we were able to socialize with other parents and families at the games.” In 2010, David bought KAP Signs in Dayton, which creates and installs a variety of signs for businesses, schools, churches, hospitals and universities. On the soccer field, he could see the problems with the old scoreboard. “The board would sort of keep time, but it would sort of skip and it just looked tired,” David said. “I knew that I could get something that would look a lot nicer and help improve the aesthetics of the varsity soccer field.” The Blangs approached the school at the end of last year’s soccer season. “If we were going to do it, we wanted to get it done in time to enjoy it for John’s season,” Joy said. John and Daniel Nesbitt ’18 are team co-captains. David purchased the new scoreboard at dealer cost for the school. Two other soccer alumni families covered the cost of the scoreboard – Patrick and Marilyn O’Brien, parents of Sean O’Brien ’16, and James and Stacey Gibson, parents of Nate Gibson ’15. David donated the labor, installation and custom signage. “It was an exciting opportunity for us to feel like we could give something maybe a little bit more significant than what we ordinarily are able to do,” Joy said. “We support the Annual Fund, of course, but as far as making major

gifts, this was our way of maximizing our giving because we were able to use David’s resources.” The new scoreboard was installed last June after school was out. “It looks fantastic,” Athletic Director Chris Milmoe said. “It’s a wonderful addition to have a new piece of hardware out there on that front, premier field.” Unlike the old scoreboard, the new one is a permanent installation. Due to Village of Indian Hill zoning regulations, CCDS had to remove the old scoreboard at the end of every season and store it. The school received permission to install the permanent board. The old scoreboard has found a new home at the practice football field. With both Blang children in Upper School, the Blangs reflected on what kept their family coming back to CCDS year after year. “It’s the environment, where I know the kids are getting an excellent education and are being pushed to their fullest potential,” Joy said. “But, at the same time, the small environment is such that someone is always looking out for them. “

The Blang Family

“All kids hit little bumps in the road. Fortunately for us, they’ve all stayed little bumps, because every time a teacher or someone has come to us or we’ve gone to them and said, ’Hey, we need a little help with one of our kids.’ They’re just right on top of it. Everyone here really cares about our kids as people, not just as students.” What’s more, they both have had good athletic experiences, David said, so that’s why the Blangs also wanted to express their appreciation for the role sports have played in their children’s education. They give credit to their soccer coaches Greg Hirschauer and Middle School Head Theresa Hirschauer.

“I can’t imagine a better middle school head out there when you’re talking about the whole child and those difficult years,” Joy said. “For our kids to have been so successful academically, but also emotionally, I credit her a lot.” “After having eight years of Middle School, I’m sad to be leaving, because I really do like the middle school environment, but I’m also really grateful. Hirsch is the reason for that. The fact that she’s going to be Caroline’s coach now for four years means that she’s still an important part of her life and our lives.”
