Friends remember Tuffy with parade By Ryan Berry
DarkeCountyMedia.com
GREENVILLE – Darke County experienced its first death from COVID-19 on Monday. Carl “Tuffy” Humerick, a resident at Greenville Health & Rehab, passed away suddenly early Monday morning due to complications from the coronavirus. By Monday afternoon, Tuffy’s special friends, Pastor Sam and Debbie Shilot, began putting a caravan of cars together to parade past his sister’s home, Betty Jo & Junior Ryan. Debbie shared the Stay at Home order from the governor means funeral homes are delaying celebrations of life services or having private services for family members and they wanted to show how much they loved Tuffy. Approximately 15 to 20 cars assembled in the parking lot at Edison State Community College and paraded past Tuffy’s sister’s house and other places Tuffy enjoyed. The parade included friends and members of Triumphant Christian Center. According to his obituary, Tuffy loved to eat and play games, especially with all of the wonderful ladies from the nursing home. No services are currently scheduled for Tuffy.

DCEA postpones annual grant deadline to June 30 GREENVILLE – Due to the uncertainty created by the current health crisis, Darke County Endowment for the Arts’ annual distribution of funds to applicants seeking financial assistance for arts-related endeavors will be postponed during this grant application cycle. DCEA Chair Marilyn
Delk announced the deadline for submitting applications will be changed to June 30. “In anticipation that conditions surrounding planning for future artsrelated activities and events may become more stable by early summer, we are extending the application deadline for individuals and organizations seeking finan-
cial assistance to reflect that hoped-for reality,” Ms. Delk explained. Additionally, due to the closing of Greenville Public Library where forms were to be available for pick-up as well as a site to which completed applications were to be returned, application forms can be secured by sending a request to the
Endowment at P.O. Box 155; additionally, completed forms can be mailed to that address. Applications are also available and may be submitted on-line at DCEA’s Website supportdcea.org. To be eligible to receive funding, an applicant must be located in or provide services in Darke County.
Projects appropriate for consideration by the Endowment board may include innovative plans and programs that increase the quality and stature of the arts that increase accessibility to the arts for local residents that enable collaboration between arts groups, that provide recognition of exceptional

cheerleader of both of these organizations, understands their importance in the community. “I remember doing stories on both of these groups when they first formed. I saw the need then and I believe their importance in developing Darke County as a tourist destination and creating a vibrant community is even greater today.” Terri Flood, president of the Darke County Visitors Bureau, said, “On behalf of the Darke County Visitors Bureau, we are delighted to have Ryan lead the strategic partnership with Main Street Greenville as the new Executive Director. Ryan has creative ideas and his love for the county will shine through as he fulfills our mission and makes Darke County a memorable destination for people of all ages.” Phillip Pierri, president of the Main Street Greenville, added, “The board of Main Street Greenville would like to welcome Ryan to the team. We’re excited about the partnership with the Darke County Visitors Bureau and look forward to working with Ryan to fulfill our mission ‘To preserve and revitalize downtown Greenville.’” The Main Street Greenville and Darke County Visitors Bureau boards stressed there will be no changes in the servings and offerings of the organizations – the full calendar of First Fridays will continue and they will still produce the Darke County Visitors Guide, and more. Berry said, “The improvements the city is doing now are really going to enhance the downtown area. Once the governor gives the all clear, I encourage everyone to come back downtown to shop and dine and enjoy what historic downtown Greenville has to offer.” He concluded, “We also have a lot of great tourist attractions and when the weather warms up and businesses and organizations start to reopen and festival season begins, it is going to be a great time to get out and visit Garst Museum, Eldora, Bears Mill, Darke County Parks, wineries and everything Darke County has to offer.”

I’ve had weeks when it’s been difficult to write this column. Sometimes it was because my kids and wife hadn’t done anything worthy of writing about. Other times it was because I was overloaded with work and didn’t get to it. This week’s column is difficult to write for a different reason. After nearly a decade of sharing my life with readers, this week’s column will be my last. For me, this announcement is bittersweet. After 26 1/2 years of sharing the stories/news in and around Darke County, I will be moving onto the next chapter in my life. I have accepted the position of executive director for Main Street Greenville and Darke County Visitors Bureau. (See front page story) I’ve thoroughly enjoyed bringing each of you into my home a couple times a month. If I could speak on-behalf of my wife and kids (and let’s face it – I have been speaking on their behalf since I started writing this column) they’ve enjoyed sharing their lives with readers. Even though I’ve never mentioned their names, my family is amazed at how many people that have mentioned this column. My wife has people ask her about my column where she works. We’ve been sitting in restaurants (but not in the last few weeks because we are practicing social distancing) and had people start talking to us about things I have written. My wife especially loves it when they ask about her snoring. This will be the first time I’ve named my family in a column, but I want them to know how much I appreciate them for allowing me to share how weird they are. Thank

We’re all point men in a place we’ve never been before with this virus.” Pastor Brown enjoys sports and believes it is good as long as it is kept in perspective. “Sports is not something that is taboo, but you can make it a god and it’s a bad thing,” said Brown. “The Bible talks about – Paul uses the example about a runner running, and a boxer boxing and doing it to win even though they receive a crown that is temporary. In Bible times, sporting events were a big thing. They had Greek and Roman culture that was very big into that.” “Sports can be good,” Brown added. “I think everybody needs something as a point of relaxation.” The topic turned to the cancellation of many sporting events including grade school, junior high, high school, college and pros; is God a mean God to allow this to happen. “God is not a mean God,” Brown stated. “God is really a loving God and a gracious God. I don’t think we know how much love God has for mankind. He had so much that he sent is

Son Jesus Christ to die for us and for us to accept Him (John 3:16).” “Kids learn so many great life lessons through athletics, from being a team player and individual efforts that are given – win or lose. Sport, disciplines, work ethics, practices, the fortitude to not give up are all learned disciplines that will pay dividends throughout their lives.” “They will learn how to handle disappointments. This might be a good life lesson that no other person and no other way could teach it to them. There are times in our early life that we look back and there was a major disappointment. It stuck with us for the rest of our lives. Some things don’t always go the way we want, and we don’t ride off into the sunset happily ever after in a lot of things of life. Life gives us good and bad.” Pastor Randy Brown had a word of encouragement, going to his favorite Bible verse. “Proverbs 3:5-6 shows that I should not trust in myself. It says, trust in
the Lord with my heart and don’t lean on my own understanding. Even as adults we are going through a time where it’s hard for me to understand where this will end.” “This Coronavirus, the economy – I need to trust in the Lord and not lean in my own understanding and in all my ways I need to just trust in Him and he will direct my path. In all my ways acknowledge Him and that is even in disappointments. That threeletter word, “all,” in the Bible sometimes confronts us hard and it shows us whether we are spiritually mature or not. When a big disappointment or these things come around, I say, “Ok, I am going to trust the Lord.” Proverbs 3: 5-6 5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. “When a player or a coach shares their faith; No. 1 it shows their strength, it shows their resolve and shows they’re not afraid,” said Brown. “It shows that deep in their heart there are spiritual disciplines and underlying security during an out-of-control time. This is especially true this year when we’ve had a major interruption right in the middle, right in the heart of basketball tournament play. It’s nice to be able to go to kids and share this “having faith in God” and be able to talk through the disappointment.” “Hopefully their faith helps them immensely through a very difficult time. It shows them that every experience that we go through doesn’t always go our way. We go through a lot of disappointments as we go through life. The older we get, the more our disappointment list grows on things we wish. Hopefully, we finally come to a spiritually more mature knowledge that God is in control.” “Life gives us life lessons that are not always sweet. The story of Joseph in the Bible shows he lived a life that he had a lot of disappointments and injustice done to him. At the end of it he said to his brothers, ‘you meant it for bad, but God meant it for good.’” “If we can grab it and say God’sSALVAGE in control,YARD I think it helps us mature. I hope

ODNR closes more of its facilities COLUMBUS – In response to the developing public health situation with COVID19 and the Ohio Department of Health’s (ODH) Stay at Home Order, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry will be closing All Purpose Vehicle (APV) areas and all campgrounds including group camps, horse camps, and family camps. All public restrooms will also be closed. “These are difficult decisions to make, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of our outdoor enthusiasts,” said Dan Balser, chief of the ODNR Division of Forestry. “Visitors can still enjoy the state forests and for the safety of those visitors, it is our intent that these closures will prevent the gathering of large groups.” The Maumee State Forest APV Area is now closed, and the opening of the Pike, Perry, and Richland Furnace state forest APV Areas, scheduled to open on April 1,
will be delayed until the Stay at Home Order is lifted. “Opening weekend and current use at the Maumee APV Area simply create too much congestion and congregation in the APV parking areas to safely open them,” Balser said. Due to the Stay at Home Order, division staff are also not able to safely inspect the trails, remove downed trees, properly maintain facilities, and perform other work necessary to keep areas open and safe. Bridle trails and mountain bike trails remain open for their designated uses, but visitors should follow social distancing guidelines. Hiking is still permitted on all state forest trails, including APV trails, using recommended social distancing behavior. Closure on these ODNR properties is effective March 24 to protect the health of both visitors and staff. Closures are expected to be temporary until COVID-19 guidelines change or are lifted.

Public outdoor spaces and all other trail systems, including our small remote backpack camps will remain open. The Division of Forestry gun ranges will also remain open. Visitors should use common sense and follow the guidance from the National Recreation and Park Association for staying safe while they are out: • Follow CDC’s guidance on personal hygiene prior to heading to trails — wash hands, carry hand sanitizer, do not use trails if you have symptoms, cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, etc. • Observe at all times CDC’s minimum recommended social distancing of six feet from other people. Practice it and know what it looks like. Keep it as you walk, bike or hike. • Warn other trail users of your presence and as you pass to allow proper distance and step off trails to allow others to pass, keeping minimum recommended distances at all times. RICHMOND, Ind. – A global shortage of Personal Protective Equipment that was putting thousands of healthcare workers at great risk has led to an “Apollo 13 moment” at a Richmond plastics company – and major relief to Reid Health’s clinical staff on the frontlines of the COVID-19 outbreak. The new virus outbreak worldwide, along with panic buying and hoarding, left health systems dangerously ill-equipped to care for new patients due to limited supplies of gloves, medical masks, respirators, goggles, face shields and gowns. So in what company officials are calling their own “Apollo 13 moment,” Primex Plastics is already making two different kinds of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that Reid Health officials say will greatly enhance their ability
to protect staff during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. In a series of almost miraculous circumstances, Primex developed, designed and scheduled mass production – all in just two days – of face shields to be used with special protective helmets at Reid that protect staff dealing with contagious airborne disease. As word spread, the company is also ramping up production to help other healthcare providers. “We can’t overstate the positive impact this will have on our team members on the frontlines in facing this outbreak, especially when our heroes are from our own community,” said Craig Kinyon, Reid Health President/ CEO. He said the production of these shields will greatly enhance the safety of his See REID | 2B

Church plans service at cemetery GREENVILLE – Once again, the Greenville Church of the Brethren decided to do things a little different for their Easter service. Instead of meeting online, as they have been doing, they have decided to greet Easter morning this year where the most important part of the Easter
Celebration happened – in a cemetery. “Because we cannot gather together as usual, we decided to meet at the Greenville Union Cemetery,” said Pastor Ron Sher-
we will begin our day as well.” Everyone is welcome to join the church in this celebration at 10:30 a.m. on April 12 at the Greenville Union Cemetery, 200 West St., Greenville. Participants
are encouraged to bring their own chairs. In case of rain, the service will be moved inside the Mausoleum. Directions: Enter the cemetery from North Main Street. Go under the archway. Take first right and

“I want to thank all my fellow citizens in Ohio for what they’re doing, because it truly is a patriotic act ... We have been attacked. We’ve been attacked by this virus, and we’re asking our fellow citizens to do extraordinary acts. We’re asking each one to do something, each one to do the distancing, where we’re pulling apart … Just as in a time of war, we have to pull together. Ultimately it’s going to be the small acts of each and every American that truly is going to make all the difference in the world. When I came home last night, Fran said you know when we have a crisis ... Americans have put out their flags to really show unity. To show we’re not going to be pushed aside, we’re not going to be conquered. We’re going to be defiant. And so I’m asking today all Ohioans to put their flags up. Fly that flag every single day ... We will get through this. Spring will come.
