The Union City Village, Police, and Fire department Facebook pages remembered Fields, posting: “It is with heavy hearts and extreme sadness that we must say goodbye to our Mayor John Fields. Mayor John died unexpectedly yesterday. John was a loving son, brother, father, and husband.” “There are a couple of things that we know for sure, John loved his wife Sarah so very much! He always wanted what was best for our community! He was also a supporter of all the employees of the Village. From the utilities department, to the fire department, to the police

We know that John will watch over all of us, that’s just the type of person he was.” “Thank you Uco Mayor for what you have done for our community. You will be greatly missed! There’s one thing we know for sure, John is in heaven, and he will continue to ‘Rock on!’ in his eternal life!” the Facebook posts said. This past February, Daily Advocate Reporter Linda Moody, writing a profile piece on the village’s new mayor, wrote that

music was an important part of his life, and Fields “tried to be a hippie” after graduating from high school. “I played hard rock bands for 40 years and was in the band Razor for 25 years with Al Gallatin, Paul Curtner and the late Roger Tingley,” he said. “We opened up for Rick Derringer and Brownsville Station.” Fields was married to the former Sarah Conyers Dec. 24, 2017. His first wife of 33 years, Jenny (Cantwell) Fields, died of cancer in August 2015. A surviving daughter, Sarah, lives in Celina. DARKE COUNTY — In an unusual year for elections, with a long delay and in-person voting replaced entirely by mail ballots due to Coronavirus precautions, Tuesday’s Ohio primary election had many usual results in Darke County. In the Republican presidential primary, President Donald Trump ran unopposed. Former Vice President Joe Biden will be the Democratic party nominee in November. Vermont Senator Holmes Bernie Sanders, despite dropping out of the Democratic primary race, received 13.58 percent of Darke’s Democrat votes. Sitting Rep. Warren Davidson (R) handily defeated challenger Edward Meer (R) for the 8th Congressional District nomination. Democrat challenger Vanessa Enoch (D) defeated Matt Guyette (D) for the right to challenge Davidson in November. The majority of the primary contests produced single candidates from each party vying for public office. Incumbent Rep. Jena Powell (R) will be opposed by Ted Jones (D) for the state’s 80th District seat. Joseph Monbeck (D) will challenge incumbent Rep. Susan Manchester (R) for the state’s 84th District seat. 12th District State Sen. Matt Huffman (R) will face challenger Ken Poling (D) in November. In Ohio Supreme Court races, Democrats John P. O’Donnell and Jennifer Brunner were selected to run HECK against Republican Justices Sharon L. Kennedy and Judi French, respectively. For the 2nd District Court of Appeals, Chris Epley (R) defeated Jeff Rezabek (R) and will be challenged by Marshall Lachman (D) for that judgeship in November. As a 7-year-old, Kaytie underwent open-heart surgery at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, St. Vincent’s, in Indianapolis. Kaytei, whose birthday is April 22, was born with a small hole in her heart and was diagnosed with a heart murmur. The family kept watch on that issue, and after a while, was told by medical personnel that everything was all right. Then April 13, 2019, the child was having chest pains, so they headed to the hospital, where they X-rayed her heart, performed two EKGs and discovered her heart was enlarged. She was sent to Peyton Manning for all kinds of tests, and then medical officials decided to go in and patch the hole. At the time, she had just finished first grade at Randolph Eastern, where she received awards in music and a program involving new math. Kaytei is the youngest of four children. She has a sister, Kearstin, and brothers, Nikolai and Domanick. Before the surgery, she was not able to do much with physical activities, such as gym, with her heart condition. UNION CITY, Ind. — Kaytei Auske just celebrated her eighth birthday. “She said it was the best birthday ever, even though the COVID-19 pandemic kept us home and from celebrating with family and friends,” said her mother, Jessi. Kaytie, also the daughter of Bobby Auske, underwent open-heart surgery last June in Indianapolis. “Since surgery, Kaytei has became a totally different child,” Jessi said. “She went from an always tired and slightly underweight child, to a happy and healthy child. She has gained about 10 pounds since the surgery.” According to her mother, Keytei participated in a 5k with her family, played soccer this last fall, and was participating in youth wrestling until school was closed due to COVID-19. “She has gotten a full release from the doctor,” Jessi said. “She does not have to follow up with the doctor for two years, unless there is a problem. Kaytei still enjoys playing her guitar and writing her own unique songs. She also enjoys playing with her animals. She loves JoJo Siwa and is rarely seen without a heart surgery last year. JoJo bow!” WELL CHECK teachers. The little girl is looking “She is very good in math forward to beginning third and enjoys reading Junie grade in August, so she B. 2020 has sure been an eye-opener In my wildest dreams, I would never have thought 2020 would have turned out this way. In one way, it may be a blessing because I’m sure life will change for most of us; in another way, the future is questionable if we believe the naysayers. As for me I naturally hope everything comes out for the best in the end if we just keep the faith. There seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel now. But you naturally just have to think “What’s going to happen next?” We’re not supposed to worry if we’ve put everything in God’s hands, something I’ve done on several occasions in the past few years. How has life been in this Moody household? I lost a set of keys and can’t seem to find them, and I sometimes forget the date since I’m working from home. I have run into road blocks when trying to come up with articles for the newspaper, but He provides. We miss seeing family and friends but grateful I can get on Facebook to

see and hear from many of them. For Jamie and me, it has not been that bad even though I know we can get on each other’s nerves sometimes, but we know we’re in this together and learn to adjust. I really feel bad for the people who have had to change their lives and routines around during this pandemic. High school seniors may not be able to finish out their final years doing the things that are traditional. Weddings have had to have been canceled or rescheduled. The elderly and the ill, who are in facilities that are in lockdown cannot get visits from their loved ones, and some companies had to shut down, forcing their employees to perhaps lose money and possibly their properties, plus other scenarios. I have penned several articles via Facebook for our readers and probably one of the most refreshing things that was said when I asked how people were spending their time during the stay-at-home order. Friend and former coworker Jane Kaiser had this to say. “My brother and I have been spending a lot of time sorting, pitching and cleaning out our parents’ farmhouse and outbuildings now that they’ve passed on. It’s been an ongoing emotional time for us but it’s got to be done. Then hoping to have

Residents donate stimulus money DARKE COUNTY — Many Darke County residents have recently received a stimulus check from the federal government. For some, the funds are providing much-needed financial assistance for basic living expenses like food and rent. Other residents are using part or all of their check to help neighbors affected by the COVID-19 crisis. One organization receiving donations and in turn distributing grants to local groups on the front lines of stability is the Darke County Foundation’s COVID-19 Relief Fund. The program is a partnership with Darke County United Way. “When a neighbor’s life is turned upside down, our community shows up to help,” said Christy Prakel, executive director of the Darke County Foundation. “We are seeing many residents giving their stimulus money back to their community.” All donations to the COVID-19 Fund go to local non-profit organizations that provide Darke County residents with groceries, meals and financial assistance for rent and utilities. “Most of us know See STIMULUS | 8A

also the proud papa! He admires what his son has done as a coach but more so as a person. Jerrod, who appears more laid back but has that fire that burns deep inside, (you can feel it) was disappointed but hides it better. He too was painfully hurting for his seniors. They both, no matter what you hear, or think, love these kids. They admire their spirit, determination, and most of all the leadership and class they display representing Greenville. The name on the front of the jersey is what matters to them and the ladies, not the one on the back. Both gentlemen love Greenville, they stated several times what a great place this is to live. They said people are wonderful here, have treated them very well, follow the athletic teams proudly, and they

are proud to call this home now. They are educators, but most of all, coaches. Teaching young lady athletes is what they enjoy. I take that back, they don’t enjoy it, they love it. It is their passion. Through our hour and a half talk, they constantly talked about the disappointment for the ladies, how bright the future is for the seniors who are leaving and moving on with their lives, and how damn proud they are of them. They are proud surrogate parents. I think Greenville is lucky to have such people. We need more people like the Newlands. They see a bright future for the town, their school, and their program. I was the starting center on the only Greenville football team to go 10-0. It was my senior year, and my forever friends from that team still talk about it. We love

This 2020 lady Wave team had high expectations, and rightly so. Now, that is gone. That is just not right! The freshmen, juniors and 2021 seniors have a golden opportunity…..the 2020 seniors have no more chances. As they grow older, they will remember their senior year as very bittersweet. The nine seniors on this team who have been so successful, so dedicated, so giving, deserve mention. my gosh did they have talent, and athletes from top to bottom to get it done. This was their year. They believed that. I do too. The amount of work the lady’s individually put forth in the off-season, without prompting from the coaches, made them ready. As an example, four of the seniors worked with the younger players, 20 young athletes, 3 days a week for four months, at their academy at the Neff building ON THEIR OWN, helping the younger ones. That is dedication and understanding of the Champions mindset! This team had several freshman and sophomores who might have really pushed the seniors for playing time. This team was loaded! Now, that is only a dream….. nightmare really. I really feel hurt for these outstanding students and ladies. I had the opportunity to talk with Coach Newland and his father, Greg, on April 28th. Greg and Jarrod are the first father/son duo to be named to the Ohio High School Fast Pitch Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Greg, the more old school coach that I am used to, really is disappointed. Not for himself, but it was obvious he loved these kids. That is all he talked about, his “Kids”. He is

She’s an all-around student-athlete and I’m extremely excited to coach her and see what she is able to do this fall.” “Maddie is very coachable, a great kid that comes from a very good family, good background,” said FM soccer coach Danny Diceanu. “She is a good athlete, she is strong on the ball, she has been working out for years playing club soccer and has good skills. She is definitely tough, she’s a strong girl, she’s rock solid.” Stacy, the daughter of Ben and Heather Stacy plans to pursue a degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science with a minor in business. “I want to become a personal trainer and nutritionist to train athletes to help them reach their goals and success,” Stacy said. “I have a passion for all sports and helping others so it seems like a perfect fit.” See STACY | 7A

Foureman, 97, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 25, 2020, at Village Green Heathcare Center in Greenville. Foureman He was born December 15, 1922, in Darke County, Ohio, to the late Howard L. and Carey (Wogoman) Foureman. In addition to his parents, Floyd was preceded in death by his wife, Betty (Howe) Foureman, whom he married May 8, 1947; his stepson, Duane Singer; and his siblings, Elizabeth Runion, Bernice Behren, Warren Foureman, anmd Thelma Pilcher. Floyd spent his entire 97 years here in Darke County. His youth as a farm boy was rigorous and full of farm adventures with many Bradford Pumpkin Shows and, of course, many Darke County Fairs. He attended Franklin School and graduated from there, in the midst of World War II, in 1942. Floyd was a strong and fit youth and was the County’s champion miler that year. He did not have to go into the Army, as he was the only son of a farmer, but elected to do so in response to his deep inner sense of duty and soon found himself on the German border in March of 1945. It was there, when leading a patrol, that he was shot in the stomach. He was later awarded both the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his actions, but his health was forever changed. Floyd returned home to a grateful community, found his wife, Betty and started a family, but never resumed farm work. His service experience affected the remainder of his life as he became a member of and served the Greenville DAV chapter and many local veteran’s activities up into his 90s — until he could no longer stand for the duration of Honor Guard ceremonies, of which he attended and led scores. His work career was principally as a machinist but along the way was a truck driver, farm hand, and was acknowledged as the first employee of Fitzwater’s here in Greenville — a source of some delightful stories. Floyd’s other enduring passion was for motorcycles which seemed to us, his family, to always be in his life. There were innumerable poker runs, rallies, and many trips to see flat track racing at the fairgrounds and at Eldora. The apex of these activities was, of course, he and his wife, Betty (in a side car), riding with friends from Darke County to Daytona Beach, Florida in 1962 — in the snows of February. This event remains legend-

ary and almost mythical in the family - but it indeed did happen. Floyd’s role as the family patriarch extended over many decades and over four generations. He and Betty were involved in many family activities and events and continued to be a source of comfort, inspiration, understanding and affection to so many of us for so long. A major feature of this closeness to us all was his and Betty’s openness — they were always, always able to extend, to all, a complete sense of being welcomed. Floyd is survived by his children, Gary (Lois Ann) Foureman of Durham, North Carolina, Dwight (Peggy) Foureman of Arcanum, Ohio, and Sharon Foureman of Greenville, his step children, Jackie (Donna) Singer of Tipp City, Ohio, Annette Deeter of Ripon California, Lucille Deeter of Ripon California; his grandchildren, Angie (Ben) Blumenstock of Greenville, Ami Powell of Piqua, Aaron Foureman of Greenville, Eric (Pam) Foureman of Verona, Ohio, Emily (Scott) Harrison of Brookville, Ohio, Jason (Megan) Foureman of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Brian Singer of Dayton, Collene Singer of Dayton, and Susan (Greg) McCrabb of Columbus; and his numerous great and greatgreat grandchildren. A public graveside service, will full military honors, will take place Thursday, April 30, 2020, at 2 p.m. at Brock Cemetery in rural Darke County. Social distancing guidelines will be observed. Online condolences may be shared with the family by visiting www.tributefuneralhomes.com SKRABAK — Norma Jean (Nisonger) Skrabak passed away of natural causes April 4, 2020. in Everett, Wash., just three days shy of her 82nd birthday. she could play, neat kid, plays the game right. Like I tell her college coach, there is only one way to judge Morgan; when you are loading the team van and the shortstop is in the van touching every bat bag as it gets packed, that is the definition of a true leader. Not too many super stars put the bat bags in the van, especially 2-time All-Staters, and would have probably been 3-time. One of the best, ever. Going to play NCAA D-1 softball at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. So there you have it…… nine outstanding young ladies in a great senior class for Greenville. There is no way to make up for their loss of a chance for a State title. The title was

not guaranteed anyway, but the CHANCE, that is all they wanted. I think they would have achieved it, but we will never know. Sad, isn’t it? However, 20 years from now as they all still keep in touch with the members of their High school family, they can talk about what they DID accomplish, which was amazing, and what they KNEW they were going to accomplish. They will be great people, citizens and WINNERS forever! I hope they all come back to live here. We need leaders like this. That’s the way I see it from the sidelines.

COLUMBUS — Ohio Department of Insurance Director Jillian Froment issued a consumer alert warning Ohioans that individuals claiming to be licensed insurance agents are contacting consumers to sell fake insurance products. In most of the situations identified, the individuals are calling from phony telephone numbers, do not hold an insurance license or work for a licensed insurance agency or insurance company, and are heavily marketing the so-called insurance product as providing some sort of COVID-19 coverage.

as well as a great deal of personal information, which the scammer then utilizes to submit fake insurance claims to insurance companies. While many health insurance plans currently cover the costs of COVID-19 testing and treatment, soliciting consumers to buy a plan for those reasons alone is a red flag. Consumer Tips:Consumers should be wary of anyone marketing insurance products who heavily emphasizes COVID-19 coverage. Consumers looking to purchase health insurance should read the policy closely to ensure that they are purchasing the right coverage for themselves and their family. Consumers should never give their personal, financial and/or insurance information to anyone unless they know who they are dealing with. Consumers looking to purchase insurance should always verify the individual and/or organization they are dealing with is properly licensed by the Ohio Department of Insurance. Consumers can verify if an agent or agency is licensed by going to www.insurance. ohio.gov. Consumers should immediately report suspected agent misconduct and insurance fraud to the Ohio Department of Fraud and Enforcement Division via 1-800-6861527 and www.insurance. ohio.gov. Consumers can visit www.coronavirus.ohio. gov for additional information on scams.

Many families who select a traditional burial typically have some type of celebration or small gathering, and we go to great lengths to make their tribute worthy of their loved one. Families selecting cremation have several options… some are planning for a service in the future and some are choosing to stay in the moment. A target date has not been set.” Zechar-Bailey: “A majority of our families have opted for private services with a Celebration of Life at a later date. There is no target date set yet so we are maintaining a list and we will continue to follow up with the families as we get closer to being able to do these.”

These business owners put their capital on the line, employ families, support non profits, wave at you on the sidewalk, and their taxes go back into this community. They are 100 percent sold out… they choose to be here, and there are no winners during this pandemic. We are heartbroken for all of the small business owners that only want to provide a service and make their community better.” Zechar-Bailey: “Yes, the Coronavirus has had a major financial impact on the industry. There has been a rise in cremations since this has started. This impacts all aspects of our business including the florists and vault compa-

Q: “Do you think any of the changes will be permanent going forward, as it pertains to health precautions for funeral home staff?” Tribute: “We try not to spend our time wrapped up in what the future may or may not hold. The Bible reminds us not to worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself! Instead we choose to focus on what we can control… and that is making the best tribute and celebration of life we possibly can for the amazing families we serve! It is what we do best.” Zechar-Bailey: “I don’t foresee and permanent changes for our industry. All of the precautions we have put into place for this are the same as we have had in the past with other serious health issues that the industry has faced.” Asked to include any additional thoughts or

observations, the staff of Tribute Funeral Homes said, “We are a community of faith and fellowship. We continue to be inspired by the generosity of our community and the innovation of our fellow small business owners. Our hope is that we emerge stronger and more connected.” Gregory Zechar of Zechar-Bailey Funeral Homes added, “The Coronavirus has really put our industry on its toes trying to find ways to accommodate our families while trying to keep them, the public and ourselves safe. The use of digital media such as Facebook Live and Zoom have been very good methods for helping our families. This has been a real eye opener for our industry and now has us all really trying to think outside the box to help and serve our families better moving forward.”

COLUMBUS – Due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) on Ohio’s business community, the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) is waiving several requirements for employers participating in programs that lower their premiums as a reward for creating safer workplaces and doing BWC business online and on time. “This is one more way we can answer Governor Mike DeWine’s call for state agencies to help Ohioans and the business community through this difficult time,” said BWC Administrator/CEO Stephanie McCloud. “We’re looking at everything we do, and I’m sure more action will follow in the coming days and weeks.” BWC is waiving all safety education and training requirements for this policy year — July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2020, for private employers; calendar year 2019 for public employers — for participants in the following programs: * Drug Free Safety Program * EM Cap Program * Grow Ohio. * Industry Specific Safety

Program * One Claim Program * Policy Activity Rebate Program Discounts offered through these programs will be applied automatically. Additionally, the annual report deadline submission for Drug Free Safety Program participants has been extended to June 1, 2020. More on these programs can be found at bwc.ohio. gov. The waivers follow Governor Mike DeWine’s signing of Ohio House Bill 197 granting the state numerous provisions designed to mitigate COVID-19’s impact on Ohioans. It also follows BWC’s announcement last week that its private and public employer members could defer their monthly premium installment amounts due for March, April, and May this policy year until June 1, 2020, at which time the matter will be reconsidered. For more on COVID-19 as it relates to BWC, visit this Frequently Asked Questions page. For the latest on COVID-19, visit the Ohio Department of Health website coronavirus.ohio. gov, or call 1-833-4-ASKODH.

The FDA has authorized Columbus-based Battelle to deploy its groundbreaking technology to sterilize surgical masks without a daily limit, which will allow Battelle to operate at its desired capacity. The Battelle Critical Care Decontamination System is capable of decontaminating up to 80,000 respirator masks per system each day. “I want to thank President Trump for his leadership and Dr. Hahn of the FDA for approving the use of this life-saving technology that Battelle has developed,” said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. “This will not only help Ohio’s

healthcare workers on the front lines of the COVID19 crisis, but Battelle will also be helping health care workers in hot spots throughout the country including New York and Washington state.” “We‘re grateful that the President and the FDA moved quickly to help us get this solution back up and running,” said Lt. Governor Jon Husted. “This Ohio-driven solution has the potential to save lives now and in the future across the United States.” In addition to offering this technology in Ohio, Battelle intends to send one machine to New York City and one to Stony Brook, New York, which will provide for the sterilization of up to 160,000 surgical masks for New York’s healthcare workers each day. Machines will also be dispatched to the state of Washington. Battelle plans to ship four more units elsewhere in the United States next week and 15 additional machines in the coming weeks.
