Asia Sykes received a gift basket from STAR 88.3 FM.
STAR 88.3 gives love in Greenville GREENVILLE — She was told in the sixth grade that she would end up in a wheelchair, maybe not even make it to graduation. Most people would give up and stop trying. Not Asia Sykes. She graduated this year from Greenville High School, not only walking, but on the swim team, a cheerleader, and a lifeguard. She has a great GPA and already has college courses under her belt. The sky is the limit! STAR 88.3 is Greenville and Darke County’s local Christian radio station at 88.9. “Several times a year, we take nominations for something we call Give Love,” explains Naomi Cantrell, Community Representative for STAR 88.3. “This year’s graduates didn’t get the usual celebration, so we decided to find one we could surprise in a big way. STAR 88.3 picked Asia Sykes to receive a surprise visit this week. She received a big basket of goodies See LOVE | 2A

DARKE COUNTY — The Darke County Fairgrounds flower beds have been planted by members of the Ladybug Garden Club. Committee members Becky Collins, Shirley Linder, Kelly Erisman, and Angie Beumer selected a Sunburst theme for the 2020 planting. A sunburst is a design commonly used in architectural ornaments and design patterns. It consists of rays or beams radiating out from a central disk in the manner of sunbeams. The sunburst is formed by Inca II marigolds, a great grower and gardener friendly flower. The plants have separate colors of orange, yellow, gold and Primrose. If you haven’t tried this brilliantlycolored, early-blooming, rough-and-ready Marigold, you’re in for a treat! So different from the old

And the plants aren’t quite as tall as the old Inca, giving them better weather resistance and staying power in the garden, with slightly smaller blooms. But the compact plant size of just 12 to 13 inches tall and 10 inches across, lets you really pack them in, and the flowers are long-lasting, ultra-colorful, and freely borne. Best of all, Inca II buys you an additional week or more of bloom time. Best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil, it blooms all summer. Added to the flower beds near the coliseum is Sun Coleus. “We schedule and support employment tours at community business locations as an effort to educate those folks interested in learning more about employment options in choices,” she said “In addition, 28 of the folks are paid to work in some capacity to maintain the Art Sense operation.” According to her, Art Sense encourages self-determination and advocacy skills by participating in the local advocacy group “Advocacy in Aktion,” regional meetings, Darke County “Aktion Club” and its in-house “Karaoke Council”. It was noted that Art Sense promotes individual choice in seeking and participating in a variety of community leisure and socialization activities throughout the state. “On average, Art Sense supports three outings daily,” the director said. “Outings are designed with personal preferences in mind for individuals.” In house, Art Sense structurally includes the Art Studio, (in which participants design and build props for themes and lend them to the community), a computer lab, a gym, a Tinker Shop, a music room, a performing arts location, a free community book exchange, a movie theater space, and academic space and a variety of leisure spaces for games and socialization activities. “Art Sense teaches adult daily living skills including cooking skills in a training kitchen created specifically for that purpose,” Schiavone added. “Art Sense hosts a large number of community-based personal wellness activities such as yoga, essential oils, performing musical artists and educational training organizations.” She concluded, “We would like to take this opportunity to shout out to our Art Sense family and say hi and we can’t wait to be together again.” Contact Darke County Media Staff Writer Linda Moody at lmoody@aimmediamidwest.com or 937-569-4315, ext. 1749. Baseball coming to Sater Park By Gaylen Blosser DarkeCountyMedia.com
GREENVILLE – Greenville has some of the area’s best baseball coming to Sater Park this spring and summer showcasing some the county’s best high school players as well as surrounding county schools. With the cancellation of the 2020 American Legion Baseball program as well as ACME, Greenville American Legion Post 140 coach Chad Henry and his staff are working hard to put together two excellent baseball teams with 18U Gaylen Blosser | DarkeCountyMedia.com and 16U teams playing a Tyler Beyke gets work on the mound throwing batting practice a recent solid schedule. Legion and Senior Legion we are just going by Greenville Thunder this year,” said Henry. “Obviously we are still playing with the same morals, the same ethics as American Legion Baseball – that is what we are founded upon.” “Three years ago I had five kids tryout for this program, the last two we have had over 40,” continued Henry. “I still have three of those kid left – I couldn’t bear them playing their last game last July so we just stayed flexible. If the Governor said we could play a double header at the end of July … we would play a double header at the end of July so we were going to do something.” Most of the competition at Sater Park will look like American Legion teams from surrounding counties only with a different name for the 2020 season. “We will be out here playing against a lot of the same teams,” Henry noted. “We have teams all over the place.” Currently the 18U team
has 47 games on the schedule and 30 games scheduled for the 16U with about 30 of the games slated for Greenville’s Sater Park. “A lot of teams don’t have fields,” Henry noted. “Greenville is a popular place because of that. There will be a lot of baseball here in Greenville for people to watch.” A typical Post 140 season has the local 18U team playing a minimum 60 game schedule with a set number assigned to the roster. 2020 will see an expanded roster to accommodate a later start to the season. “We kept some extra players this year so we have a big roster but by having that the kids can still go out – they’re going to have basketball things coming up, they’re going to have football things coming up,” said Henry. “Everyone is going to wrestle these kids to play their sport and we want to be flexible and allow them to do that.” “We have plenty of games,” Henry added.
“The players will communicate with us and that way we can get everybody innings and at bats.” Due to the Coronavirus the team will not be taking overnight trips as has been the practice in the past. “We wanted to cutout overnights and we wanted to keep everything somewhat close and following the Governor’s orders,” shared Henry. “It’s been a handful but we have 35 kids out here that are pretty excited to play baseball.” Coach Henry took time to address the COVID-19 situation. “We have been following the protocol with our players,” said Coach Henry. “We take temperatures going in, we sanitize in and we sanitize out. We are not sharing equipment and those kinds of things. There are a lot of precautions, but we are meeting them.” Contact Darke County Media Sports Editor Gaylen Blosser at gblosser@ aimmediamidwest.com or 937-5483330

As a result, you can now see Greenville High School Senior Banners displayed along downtown Greenville. “I did not do this with the intent to make money,” Berry said. “I wanted to do something for the seniors that had missed out on so much.” Berry understands from his daughter just how much they had missed out on. “You look at what got taken away from them,” Berry said. “They missed out on prom, they missed out on spring sports, award banquets. Those who belonged to organizations on awards and things like that they would have gotten. It may have only been two months, but a lot was missed out on.” So, Berry immediately talked to his design committee. “They were on board with it,” Berry said. “I called the high school and Stan (Greenville High School principal Stan Hughes) said he had already heard form Joe Wintrow,” Wintrow is the owner of Wintrow Signs & Designs. “I talked to Joe (Wintrow) to see if he wanted to work together on something,” Berry said. “He was more than happy to do that. He took care of of the design and printing them off for us.” Berry is happy with the response he got. “We didn’t get half of the graduating class, but pretty close it,” he said. “The numbers were pretty good. And I have to thank all the individual sponsors I had had. They made it possible so that everybody who wanted a banner could have one.” Berry was excited when he saw the end product. “I think they really turned out great,” Berry said. Greenville High School principal Stan Hughes agreed. “And I think anything you can do to honor students is a good thing,” Hughes said. “Especially this senior class with everything they have been through. They might have had it as tough as any, having to do classes online the last two months.” The plan was to have them up before the Greenville virtual graduation that aired at 7 p.m. Saturday. But, Mother Nature had other ideas. “There was no just no way we could put them up on Friday or Saturday with the rain and wind,” Berry said. “I really have to thank Ryan Delk, the Safety Service Director and the street department. They really did a great job.” And the banners were much anticipated. “People were definitely excited about it,” Berry said. “I have had a lot of response. The last couple a days I had a lot of people asking, ‘When are they going up, when are they going up?’” Berry said he expects this to be a one-time thing. “The reason being, it is a lot of work for the street department,” Berry said. “They are going to be up there in a couple weeks taking these down and replacing them with other banners. I shouldn’t say it See GRADS | 2B

Due to the popularity of the event, it will be held at 12 p.m. and again at 5 p.m. Space is limited and reservations are required. JOETTA C. GRIFFITTS WASHINGTON COURTHOUSE — Joetta Carol (Brake) Griffitts, (December 23, 1947 – May 21, 2020) had a real zest for life. Joetta soared through her early years of life, working hard and establishing herself as a financially independent woman in an era where women rarely struck out on their own. With beauty, brains, and talent, she had many admirers who adored her charisma and witty charm, but it was Roger Griffitts who won her heart. On August 14, 1976, they wed and thus began one of the happiest periods of her life. They shared the same country farm in Washington Court House, Ohio for the next 44 years and built a life rich in joy and accomplishment: creating a homestead; wheeling and dealing at
flea markets and antique shops; becoming a successful businesswoman while raising her children at home; jumping into the unknown to support her husband’s dream of creating his own mortgage company; celebrating the joyous births of four grandchildren; hosting poker games with dear friends; shopping with her girls and playing poker with her son; and enjoying frequent gatherings with her extended family. She welcomed each moment with kindness and humor. Joetta is preceded in death by her beloved father, James Brake; favorite aunt, Noma Collins; and special daughter Ashley (Griffitts) Lamb. Joetta is survived by her devoted husband Roger Griffitts; loving mother, A. Lorraine Brake; best friend and brother, Jimmie Brake; children Jessie Willis (hus-
band Ryan, children Audrey and Cole), Justin Griffitts (fiancé, Sarah Kadunc Landell, child Hunter), Tara Griffitts (children Cirus and Syd); and the Rodriquez family (Janio, Gigi, Dari, Cecilia, Edgar, and Carolina), as well as many relatives and friends who will miss her dearly. A celebration of life gathering is being planned for the late summer/early fall. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Dementia Society of America, an organization that provides support to the patients and caregivers of those affected by dementia. Donations can be made online or via mail to P.O. Box 600, Doylestown, PA 18901. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Summers Funeral Home. Greenville Early Bird
We’re in this together, for better or worse I thought for sure we would all come out of this pandemic changed people since we had so much time to think about life in a new perspective for the past couple of months. However, it disturbs me and a lot of others about what else is going on the world, especially in the United States. I guess a lot of people don’t have those same feelings. Yes, it is very sad what brought some of this on, but life is too short to turn on our own nation as far as looting, riots and protests go. This is America….so far,
the land of the free and the home of the brave. People need to grow up and value their life and all that we have here. Not all of us are rich and prosperous, but we get by. If we have to change a little bit, we’ll survive. Remember, do unto others as you would want them to do unto you. Let’s make America even better by being better people from here on out. I don’t know about you, but I’m putting all of this in God’s hands. He has always taken care of us and He will do it again. • Son Jamie and I extend
