Werner out-shoots six others GREENVILLE — Madison Werner came out the winner Thursday night at the finals of the Miss Annie Oakley Shooting Competition to earn the title for this year at the Darke County Fairgrounds. The daughter of Marla Blume, whose significant other is Jerry Marker, Madison was at the 90-foot mark when she first missed her first chance and then hit the target on her second shot, making her the winner of the coveted title. Also during that round, Lauren Wright aimed for the balloon target and missed both shots, so she earned first runner-up position. The contestants get two chances to hit the balloon target to keep them in competition, and, if they are successful, they move back in five-foot increments, starting at 25 feet away from target. Third runner-up went to Cierra Miller, who won the costume judging on Tuesday night during the preliminaries. She missed her target from 90 feet away. Werner admitted to not having practiced much for the competition. “I practiced a little,” she said. “I got a BB gun for Christmas and wanted to do this contest. I am very proud of myself.” The 15-year-old Werner will be a sophomore at Greenville High School. She is a member of Greenville Rangers 4-H Club

VANDALISM
On June 26 an officer was called to Safe Haven on Fair Street on a report about their fence being damaged. The officer spoke to the complainant and a witness, who stated he was outside in Safe Haven’s parking lot along with Ryan Hiestand. Hiestand was upset about being asked to leave Safe Haven for a few days. He became so angry he punched a hole in the vinyl fence that surrounds the Safe Haven property, causing damage. The complainant was inside at the time Hiestand struck the fence, but heard the fence break. She went outside and located the defendant pacing by the damaged fence. The officer spoke with Safe Haven staff who said they would have to contact the organization’s board to decide if they wanted to pursue charges against Hiestand. A couple weeks later, the officer learned the board did want to press charges against Hiestand for the damage he caused. On July 14, a citation was issued to Hiestand for criminal damaging. CPO VIOLATION
On July 17 an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of Spring Street in reference to a possible CPO violation Upon arrival the officer met with the complainant who had submitted a report a few months earlier in regards to Timothy Smith, who had been threatening and harassing them through Instagram. The threats included physical harm and even death. At that time, Smith was warned for telecommunications harassment. Greenville Police plan to follow up with the prosecutor’s office concerning possible charges, as well as talking with Smith. WANTED PERSON On July 22 a Greenville police detective was assisting an adult parole officer at a residence in the 200 block of Tillman Avenue. At this time, Miranda Cheadle, who was known to have a felony arrest warrant, was located inside the residence and detained. Cheadle’s warrant for aggravated burglary was confirmed. An officer was called to the scene to transport Cheadle, who was being extremely disorderly and yelling profanity. While Cheadle was being escorted from the house she attempted to pull away and headbutt officers. Cheadle was placed in front of the police vehicle so she could be searched. During that time, Cheadle head-butted the hood of the vehicle, threatened to physically assault the parole officer and continued to yell obscenities. No contraband was found and Cheadle was placed in the back of the vehicle. After the officer shut the door, she struck the side window at least three times, trying to break the glass. She also banged her head into the partition inside the vehicle. The officer opened the door advising Cheadle if
she didn’t stop she would be Tasered. After leaving for the jail, Cheadle continued to slam her head into the partition and then removed her handcuffs. She continued to verbally assault the officer, screaming profanity while banging the partition with the handcuffs and her hand. Cheadle stated she wanted to fight and threatened harm to officers if she ever saw them in street clothes. Once at the jail, Cheadle was released to jail staff and threatened harm to herself while being uncooperative. Cheadle was handcuffed, placed back in the police cruiser and was transported to Wayne Healthcare ER for an assessment. On July 24 an officer observed a male subject on a bicycle in the 400 block of Short Street. The officer was familiar with the male subject, identified as Todd Daniels. A felony warrant was confirmed through LEADS/ NCIC. The warrant was through Darke County for a probation violation on the original charge of vandalism with no bond. Daniels was arrested and transported to the Darke County Jail, where he was released to jail staff. Daniels wanted his bicycle returned home, so another officer assisted in transporting the bike. Campaign continues progress All gifts matter for new buildings By Bethany J. Royer-DeLong Darkecountymedia.com
DARKE COUNTY — Things are looking great for the Great Darke County Fair Building Campaign thanks to recent contributions that now bring the total to $2,225,000. Matt Hughes of Cincinnati-based nonprofit consulting firm Fair Funding LLC shared the news Wednesday afternoon. Some of the most recent contributors not reported after last week’s Fair Board meeting includes Keller Grain, Bill, and Beth Davenport, Darke Rural Electric Cooperative Inc., Rumpke, Cy Schwieterman Inc., Ed
Erisman, Darke County Foundation, and Jared and Alicia Marker in their sons’ names – Luke and Owen Marker. As contributions continue to pour in, it goes back to “all gifts matter,” said Hughes. However, while gifts towards the building campaign are welcome until the end of the year, for recognition purposes at this year’s fair, the last day to pledge will be Friday, Aug. 2. Donators will receive special recognition during the 163rd Great Darke County Fair with banners prominently displayed on several buildings on the fairgrounds. Contributions may be made during the fair as

Hughes will be hosting a booth (location yet to be determined). When asked why individuals and businesses donate, Hughes shared it revolves
around a passion for the fair and especially for the kids. He reflected on Rachel Fearon who shared at a recent fair board meeting how 4-H Club members made a special visit to twenty-some businesses that had made pledges. The kids had delivered cookies and treats to the businesses to share their thanks and appreciation. Fearon had also shared how the Barrow Boosters had raised$5000 towards the campaign; marking the monies for the new swine barn. Once again highlighting how every gift matters. Readers Write Moving children’s collection The Worch Memorial Public Library Board has decided to put the Children’s Collection in the basement. This was a decision made without public involvement, and it was decided even though several on staff have rejected the idea for various reasons. A petition, with over 200 signatures of Worch Library patrons, was brought before the Board asking for the Children’s Collection to stay where it is but was ignored. How can this Board ignore so many? How can this Board decide to spend tax payer dollars on this move that seemingly so few want? How can they spend tax payer money on this project without first reinstating the hours that were cut several years ago? Worch Memorial Public Library is still closed on Fridays. If there is money to finish the basement, should that money not first have been used to reopen the Library on Friday? The original design of the Library has the basement to be finished as community and programming space. Why has the board not included public conversation in this major change to the original design plan? The Ohio Library Council Standards for Public Library Service in Ohio 2010 Revision is put forth to “assist staffs and trustees…in managing their libraries” (page
iii). In this document libraries should have “a board-approved written long range plan….The libraries plan is based on input from library trustees, administration, staff, customers, and community stakeholders”(page5). Is there such a plan in place at Worch Library? Is this move of the Children’s Collection a part of that long-range plan? If so, where was the customer involvement? Do the members of the Board even know that this resource for them even exists? What happens to the programming that uses the basement now? My children attend afterschool programming at the Library several times a month. I know that the Legos program needs a lot of space for the large number in attendance. It is loud and the kids are enjoying themselves; there is plenty of space for this, but not if circulation takes up part of that space. If the Children’s Circulation is put in the basement the programming will be interrupted. Also what happens to the Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale that has used the basement for its fundraiser since this building was opened? I ask the board to reconsider their decision. It will be a detriment to our library and to our children’s usage of the library. Carrie Drees,
Senators urge FEMA sign-up WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, U.S. Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Rob Portman (R-OH) encouraged Ohioans to apply for federal disaster assistance they helped secure through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The deadline for Ohioans to apply for federal assistance is Monday, Aug. 19. Ohioans can apply online at www.disasterassistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-3362 for more information. In June, FEMA approved federal assistance for Auglaize, Darke, Greene, Hocking, Mercer, Miami, Montgomery, Muskingum, Perry, and Pickaway Counties. The approval of federal disaster funding will help ensure that these counties can access important federal assistance and resources to recover. “It’s important for all Ohioans who suffered damage from the storms to register – in addition to receiving FEMA aid for yourself, you’ll help the entire state. residents who receive funding, the more funds will be available to local communities to rebuild,” said the senators. “I appreciate Senator Brown and Senator Portman using their platforms to remind people to sign up for FEMA benefits. We’re all in this recovery effort together, and it’s important that everyone impacted by the tornado take advantage of the opportunity to sign up for relief before the August 19 deadline,” said Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley. We visited the other day and noticed he is trying to take out a bunch of bushes along the sidewalk leading to their front door. My wife scolded him and told him to let us know when he needs help and we will come over to help him pull out the roots. I really do applaud my parents for staying independent and getting things done. I know they don’t like to ask for help and I do worry about them. I really don’t have much of a chance of convincing them to wait for help. While we were sitting outside talking, my dad got up, and went over to the trampoline they bought for the great-grandkids. I looked over and he was jumping on the trampoline. He got off of the trampoline and came back over to the table and said, “That was higher than I jumped yesterday.” My grandpa jumped on our trampoline when he was in his 90s. According to Senator Matt Huffman, the bill came down to two parts, the decision to continue to have nuclear power in Ohio and eliminating a bad program — the energy efficiency program. Further stating research was conducted on whether the plants needed assistance with findings concluding closure was inevitable without the subsidy. That the Ohio consumer will pay less for their utilities, though not specific on how much they would save. The senator further cited a regular, on-going audit will be performed during the subsidy period, along with the potential for the subsidy
to end early. Senator Steve Huffman, also attending via teleconference, spoke briefly on the biennial budget stating a significant amount of money will go towards education and mental health services. He also shared news on Sen-
ate Bill 57 which sees the decriminalization of hemp and its license for cultivation. SB 57 poses some challenges for law enforcement as shared by Chief Deputy Mark Whittaker with the Darke County Sheriff’s
Office and a member of the legislative committee While not foreseeing too many difficulties, Whittaker cited the need to educate law enforcement and the proper documentation to offset issues “on the side of the highway” when it comes to the transportation of hemp within the community. “We have no desire to seize a load of hemp that’s legitimate,” said Whittaker. The senator assured the Department of Agriculture would have rules in place for just such situations. Otherwise, hemp is, “going to do real well for the farmers,” and he expects seed in the ground next spring. Reach reporter Bethany J. One project they do is making chemo bags and filling them with various supplies to give to those who need them. “We have decided to make it an ongoing project,” said Huston. “A lot of money goes toward that.” They have purchased two wagons full of toys for Children’s Hospital in Dayton; adopt families at Christmas time and donate food and toys to them; support Empowering Darke County Youth with meals; and holds such fundraisers as Trophy Nut sales and Miss Wick’s Pies sales. They have made business appreciation deliveries to Lowe’s and Hospice; worked at the Rotary Lemonade Stand at Poultry Days; and recently donated $150 to send to Montgomery County Board of Developmental

Disabilities’ Emergency Relief Fund to help those affected by the recent tornadoes. The 48-member group meets monthly at the Ansonia United Methodist Church, while the officers, Kiwanian Adviser Phil Crawford and Huston and Pressly meet the second Monday of every month at Edison State Community College. Another figure at the meetings will be Kelly Nguyen, a senior at Greenville High School and the lieutenant governor of the Ohio District Key Club. She attended her first meeting with club members this past Monday. Huston and Pressly keep track of the hours of the Aktion Club members’ through their volunteer and service leadership activities, which last year totaled 1,785 hours. Aktion Club is currently putting together a video to be entered into a nationwide contests for Kiwanis. “We started this last year,” Huston said. “This year’s theme is ‘Serving The Children.’ Last year, we did a scrapbook and won first place in the international competition. It is on display at Greenville Public Library. This year we had the option of doing a video.” Another highlight of the
meeting was the presentation of certificates. Gladys Heath was named Member of the Month for June, receiving a certificate and traveling trophy. It was noted that she attends all meetings and treats everyone with respect. Certificates were presented to Vonda Baldwin of Greenville for outstanding Trophy Nut sales, and Lorrie Kaegy of Union City for outstanding candy sales. Richard Shafer is from Consumer Support Services in Greenville and loves Aktion Club and gets to the event by his provider Kayla Richards. “It’s rewarding to see the smiles on faces and meeting people receiving our things,” said Ploch, who likes to read to preschool children. Their biggest event and fundraiser, Fun Day, is set for Shelter House 4 in Greenville City Park an event for children and adults of all ages. The next club meeting will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 26, at the Ansonia Methodist Church. Contact Staff Writer Linda Moody at lmoody@aimmediamidwest.com or at (937)569-4315 ext. 1749. GREENVILLE – The Darke County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of a telephone scam in the Darke County area recently. This type of scam has been going on all around the country for some time and seems to be perpetrated in this area periodically. A similar scam occurred at this time last year. This particular telephone scam involves the perpetrator identifying himself as Chief Deputy Mark Whittaker of the Darke County Sheriff’s Office to obtain money for failing to report for jury duty or that a subpoena has been issued. In cases such as these the suspect will utilize the name of someone from the local community they are calling. This is an attempt to legitimize the scam. The fictitious telephone number on the caller ID often
shows up as a local number in an effort to lure unsuspecting victims. The caller will try to intimidate the victim into complying with the demands. They may try to solicit information to your account numbers or ask you to wire money. When the victim refuses to comply or questions the legitimacy of the call it is followed by threats of arrest. The Darke County Sheriff’s Office does not operate this way. They do not call and attempt to obtain money for failure to show for jury duty or any other court processes such as outstanding citations or warrants. Deputies do commonly make phone calls to follow up on investigations and reports. A deputy will never ask you for money. If a person questions the

validity of a deputy’s call, the caller will be asked to call back on their publically known telephone number 937-548-2020 and ask for the deputy who will then take the call. Sheriff Toby Spencer is warning citizens not to fall for this scam. In all situations, it is important that citizens do not verify or provide any personal information over the phone unless they positively know or trust the caller. Best course of action if you suspect you are receiving a scam call is to hang up immediately. Any citizens who have suffered a monetary loss or feel they have compromised their personal identifying information can contact the Darke County Sheriff’s Office at 937-548-2020 or their local law enforcement agency.
DCP Friends of Parks GREENVILLE – The Friends of the Darke County Parks will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 6. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. and is held in the Assembly Room of the Shawnee Prairie Nature Center. Dr.
Margaret Hensel will present a program on one of her recent bird watching/ nature trips to an exotic location in the world. Come and find out more about their organization as they head into the fall schedule of events at the
parks. They will be making plans to help the staff in many fall programs, including Prairie Days in September. For more information, call the park office at 937-548-0165 or go to www.darkecountyparks.org.

Mosaic of Community Leadership PIQUA – Over 85 nonprofit board members, executive directors, staff, and volunteers from throughout the region attended the 16th annual Mosaic of Community Leadership conference recently in the Robinson Theater of Edison State Community College’s Piqua Campus. The event was hosted by The Edison Foundation and the Center for Leadership Development at Edison State. The one-day conference, which is made possible through the continued support and generosity of The Paul G. Duke Foundation, gave participants the opportunity to engage in a keynote address, network with other area nonprofit leaders, attend breakout education and work sessions. A keynote address was provided by Patty Cisco principal and founder of inbound digital marketing agency Marketing Essentials. In her address, Cisco provided nonprofit leaders in attendance with insight on how to sustain a successful organization by being adaptive and creative, without creeping away from their mission. Cisco also spoke with audience members about the five pillars that have fueled her quest for organizational success and personal happiness. Those in attendance also participated in breakout education and work sessions which touched on such topics as Communication, Financial Management, “Friendraising” and Fundraising, Governance and Leadership, and Human Resources. Sessions were led by Patty Cisco, Principal and Founder of Marketing Essentials; Dr. Doreen Larson, President of Edison State Community College; Abigail Cline Jacobs, Associate Assistant Attorney General in the Charitable Law
Section of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office; Joel Kessel, Owner of Kessel Strategies; Jessica Lammers, Digital Content Specialist at Marketing Essentials; Beth Short, Outreach and Education Coordinator for the Ohio Attorney General’s Charitable Law Section; and Becky Telford, Library at the Edison State Library; and Rick Hanes, Vice President of Business and Community Partnerships and Executive Director of The Edison Foundation. The Mosaic of Community Leadership conference is held each year in conclusion of the Paul G. Duke Academy for Community Leadership series which is designed to help individuals make a difference on their nonprofit boards and in their communities. Those who successfully completed the Paul G. Duke Academy for Community Leadership series were presented with graduation certificates during the conference. The 2019 graduates included JoAnn Anderson, Lincoln Community Center; Tricia Atwood, Ohio Living Dorothy Love; Anna Baumeister, Piqua Education Foundation; Lissa Brown, Girl Scouts of Western Ohio; Dee Gillis, Tipp City Foundation; Ian Hinz, Raise the Roof for the Arts; Sonja Holycross, Partners in Hope; Andrea Keller, Partners in Hope; Kim Meier, The Troy Foundation; Sue Parker, Miami County Continuum of Care; Janel Ranly, City of Piqua; Kathy Sherman, Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce; and Megan Sherman, Girl Scouts of Western Ohio. Lorna Swisher, Executive Director of Mainstreet Piqua, served as the facilitator for this year’s Academy. A Paul G. Duke Foundation grant in honor of the late Cheryl Steiffel Francis made schol-
arships available for students to participate in the Paul G. Duke Academy for Community Lead-
