GREENVILLE — It has been an interesting four months for Chief Michael Murphy, the new Naval Science instructor for the Greenville High School’s Junior Naval ROTC program. Murphy, who came to Greenville from St. Louis, to work with Commander Winford Knowles, started at Greenville March 16. “That was the same day the schools were closed (for the Murphy Coronavirus),” Murphy said. “It was definitely weird. I came in that day looking forward to meeting all the cadets.” Murphy has 11 years active duty in the Marine Corps and has served in the U.S. Naval Reserves for another 15 years. So, what was it that brought him to Greenville? “Everyone always asks me that,” Murphy said with a smile. “I looked forward to the opportunity to work with Commander Knowles.” Murphy had an opportunity to work at a school in St. Louis which is all cadets — a school just for ROTC. “It is one of four or five schools in the nation like that,” Murphy said. “I just felt like I could make a bigger impact working with 80 cadets as opposed to working with 800. “I am very happy that Chief Murphy is here, as you get to know him, you will understand why I say that,” Knowles said at a Greenville board meeting earlier this month. “He is going to be a great asset to Greenville, the community and the school system. Murphy is looking forward to getting started. “I am very happy to be here,” he said. “It was an honor to be hired on by Mr. Fries, Mr. Hughes and Commander Knowles. The fight was broken up and a resident was issued a nuisance abatement form. July 28, 7:26 a.m.: Officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Shawnee Street in reference to a domestic disturbance. The resident dismissed the officer upon arrival and a nuisance abatement form was issued. July 31, 5:14 p.m.: Police responded to a domestic disturbance complaint near the 500 block of East Fifth Street. The couple agree to separate for the night and officers left the scene. July 31, 7:09 p.m.: Officers were dispatched to the 400 block of East Main Street in reference to an assault complaint. Upon arrival, officers were able to resolve the situation and no arrests were made. July 31, 9:32 p.m.: Police were dispatched to the 400 block of Armstrong Street in reference to a domestic disturbance. The couple resolved matters on their own and officers left the private residence. Traffic July 15, 9:53 p.m.: Officers responded to a minor car accident at the corner of Devor Street and Washington Avenue. A street sign was damaged in the accident and there were no injuries.

BRADFORD — The Bradford Exempted Village School District has released its draft for the restart of school this fall. “It is the intent of Bradford Exempted Village School District to open school this fall educating our students in an environment that will be considered as close to ‘normal’ as possible, while implementing safety protocols to protect both students and staff,” Bradford Superintendent Joe Hurst said. “These plans follow the guidelines set forth by our state and local leaders and are subject to change with little or no notice.” Highlights from the plan, which can be found on the Bradford schools website, include: Timeline Proposed first day of school for students possibly moved to Sept. 8. We soon were treated at all hours to Willie’s croaks. Always his neck would swell and then he’d announce his presence. For about a week as we packed books into boxes, my wife and I began to refer to Willie as our pet. Our beloved Labrador retriever Casey had died of old age and we were petless. Then I made a big, irretrievable mistake. I went on the Internet and found several sites with male toads making mating cries and other cries to stake out their territory. Willie at first answered. But then his behavior changed the next three days. Instead of plopping in his dish and exploring the tank, Willie began jumping for the screen. Clearly, he wanted to escape. Worse, he ignored completely the fresh crickets and wax worms that dropped beside him. My wife minced no words. She told me that either Willie was frightened of the toads with booming male potency. Or else he wanted company and was now lonely. Whatever the case it was clear that he regarded the once idyllic tank as a

He is the author of the historical novel Sons of the Dawn: A Basque Odyssey, which makes use of his experiences as a young reporter trailing a large band of sheep with Basque herders from Spain. A longtime magazine freelance writer, he shares his reflections on the people and places he finds in Darke County. His wife Gosia, a native of Warsaw, Poland, is a freelance photographer and longtime accountant.

OBITUARIES JOANNA SCHMERMUND EL CAMPO, Tex. — Joanna Schmermund, age 95, formerly of Rockport, Texas and Greenville, Ohio, died July 27, 2020, surrounded and loved by her family in El Campo, Texas, after battling limitations from a stroke. Joanna was born June 27, 1925, in the small village of Gettysburg, Darke County, Ohio, to the late Lewis Hiram Marker and Myrtle Roll Marker and graduated from Greenville High School in 1943. Joanna was united in marriage to George F. Schmermund III in 1946, and they were blessed with two sons, George IV and John, both of El Campo, Texas. Joanna attended the School of Radiology Technology, and after graduation, began her 30-year career for Wayne Hospital in Greenville as an Administrative Manager of the Radiology Department. She supported her husband in more ways than one and was considered a regular customer at her husband’s family business, Schmermund’s Jewelers. Joanna was admired by many with her ability to have fun, dress to impress, continued leadership, and dedication to caring for her husband and family. Her family knew better than trying to surprise her because of the many organizations in which she participated. If not serving as president, Joanna definitely offered her input, taking charge in some form. The organizations that benefited from her leadership and involvement were Eastern Star, American Heart Association, Criterion Club, Vestry of the Episcopal Church, Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs, Allegro Women’s Club, Key Allegro Garden Club and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. At home, Joanna often polished her silver collec-

tion or set the table in anticipation of company, especially family and friends. If grandchildren knocked on the door, her first invite was to a tea party or dinner, which required both a formal table setting and napkins on the lap. Until the time of her stroke, her days consisted of organizing her belongings, volunteering at the cash register at the local thrift-shop, Castaways, picking up friends to go dancing, or modeling clothes on the runway for charity. She never gave up teaching valuable life lessons and how to be a role model for future generations. Joanna is survived by her children George F. Schmermund IV and wife, Karen, and John J. Schmermund and wife, Anna; grandchildren Stacy Romo and husband Rick, George F. Schmermund V and Alisa, Brandie Bodungen and husband, Derrick, and Britni Key and husband, William; great-grandchildren Adrian Martinez and fiancé, Danielle Lara, Kiara Romo, Emilie and Kate Bodungen, Addelin, Anaclare and Bennet Key, Krysta and Ty Bubela; and one great-greatgrandchild, Dawson Martinez, all of El Campo, Tex. Joanna was preceded in death by her loving husband, George F. Schmermund III; sisters, Marge, Francis, Helen, Mary, Gwen, and brother, Dan Marker. A celebration will be held by the family in the upcoming months with future interment in Abbottsville Cemetery, Darke County, Ohio. ANTHONY W. ANDERSON ARCANUM – Anthony Wayne Anderson, age 54, of Arcanum, passed away unexpectedly at home Saturday, April 4, 2020. Anthony Wayne Anderson was a 1984 graduate of Northridge High School and Montgomery County JVS, Clayton, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie and Minnie Anderson. Anthony is survived by his wife of 24 years, Angela Anderson; children, Jessica (Jeff) Welbaum, Chasity (Brad) Byers, Kelsey (Aaron) Wise; grandson, Jackson Welbaum; sister, Jennifer Anderson; in-laws, Jerry and Susan Ruse; brotherin-law, Kyle Ruse and niece, Aubrey; nephews and niece, Matthew, Justin, and Cassie; fur babies, Andy & Noelle;

countless friends, and several other relatives. Anthony loved his family with all his heart, especially his little grandson. He was a jack-of-alltrades and did everything with tremendous love for his family. Wayne could be described as a hard working, good ‘ole country boy who enjoyed listening to George Strait and watching Notre Dame play. He will be deeply missed by all his family and friends. MARGERY B. PRAKEL VERSAILLES — Margery B. Prakel, age 88, of Versailles, Ohio, died August 6, 2020, at Brethren Retirement Community in Greenville. She was born January 14, 1932, in Montgomery County, Ohio, to the late Orville J. and Dorothy M. Brubaker of Eaton, Ohio. On June 2, 1956, she married H. Stewart Prakel, who died in May 2006. Surviving are two sons, Andrew (Nancy) of Dublin and Michael (Christine) of Versailles; a daughter, Libby (Steve Connell) of Chicago; seven grandchildren: Austin Prakel of Columbus; Lydia Prakel of Columbus; Mary (Chris) Broderick of El Paso, Texas; Margaret (Sean) Sullivan of Arlington, Virginia; Samuel Prakel of Seattle; Caroline Prakel of Indianapolis; Lucille Prakel of Colorado Springs; and two great-grandchildren. Margery is preceded in death also by her brother and sister-in-law, Herman and Joan Brubaker, and in-laws Phyllis and Charles Tate. A 57-year resident of Versailles, Margery was a teacher at Versailles Exempted Village Schools for 22 years, retiring in 1992, and was voted Teacher of the Year in Darke County in 1990. She received her master’s degree in education from Wright State University in 1987 and bachelor’s degree

in education from Wittenberg University in 1953. She graduated from Eaton High School in 1949. Following her retirement, she spent many years tutoring students and teaching piano lessons. Margery was a member of multiple community organizations, including Coterie Club, Versailles Garden Club, board of Kinder Korner Preschool, and board of the Versailles Scholarship Fund. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Versailles, where she was a devoted member of the choir, church council, and Sunday school teacher. Margery and Stewart were honored to be named grand marshals of the Poultry Days Parade in 1999. She treasured her dear friendships in card club and the TRIC investment club. Margery loved golfing, gardening, playing piano, traveling, reading, and sharing time with her children and grandchildren. A graveside service for family and friends will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, August 13 at Greenlawn Cemetery, Versailles. MILDRED M. HAWORTH GREENVILLE — Mildred “Millie” Mae Haworth, age 100, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away at 8:45 p.m., Saturday, July 18, 2020, at the Brethren Retirement Community in Greenville. Born in Washington Township, Darke County, Ohio, July 29, 1919, she was the second of three children to the late E. Lowell and Virgel “Marie” (Hamilton) Niswonger. Mildred graduated from Palestine School, Darke County, in 1937, and married Charles Richard Haworth on November 12, 1942. She worked many years as an office assistant at her husband’s podiatry office, C.R. Haworth Podiatry. Mildred was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Greenville, and served on the Altar Guild Committee for over 60 years. She was a member of the Delta Omicron Chapter of the Sigma Alpha Sorority. Mildred loved playing basketball in her younger years, and still continued to watch basketball games throughout the rest of her life. She enjoyed playing with her grandchildren and spending time with family. On any given day you could find her walking all over town. She walked everywhere! In her free time she liked to cook, garden, and attend her grandchildren’s school activities and events. She will truly be missed. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in

Eileen was born March 15, 1920, in Darke County to the late Albert and Sophia (Grote) Oehrtman. In addition to her parents, Eileen was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Shoemaker, on September 7, 2006, whom she married August 24, 1947; son-in-law, Thomas Wrenn; brothers, Gerald, Melvin, William, Floyd, and Richard Oehrtman; and sisters, Evelyn Spencer and Lois Weaver. Eileen was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she was a caregiver to many family members throughout her life. Born February 5, 1931, in Harrison Twp., Preble County, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Fern (Mendenhall) Besecker. Donna was a 1949 Verona High School graduate and had worked at F and F Mold in Verona for 30 years. She had attended the Gordon UMC and was a member of the WSCS in the church. She was a member of the Verona Grange and served as an election poll worker in Verona for many years and also served on the Republican Central Committee for Preble County. NEW MADISON — The Tri-Village Local Schools has released its restart plan for the upcoming school year. “Our plan is for a full return to school in a manner that minimizes the risk for students and staff by implementing health and safety measures,” Tri-Village Superintendent Josh Sagester said. “The district will implement safety precautions, though we want to be transparent and acknowledge that some level of risk will always be present when children and school employees occupy school district facilities.” The full plan is available on the TriVillage schools website. All buses will be equipped with hand sanitizing stations and air purification systems with UV lights. GREENVILLE — The Darke County Fair Board met Wednesday evening to discuss plans for the junior fair livestock sales and concessions. The junior fair this year will operate for six days, August 21 to 26, and is not open to the public. A drive thru food pick-up system will operate August 27, 28, and 29, which allows for the general public to drive through the fair grounds to pick up food from a limited number of vendors. The details on how this can be done safely and efficiently are still being worked out. “We hope to have around 20 to 30 vendors,” noted Brian Rismiller, the fair manager. “Right now, we are working out a system in which cars enter the fairgrounds from one side, get their food, and exit from another. We are just trying to keep people safe and keep a solid flow of traffic.” All parking for the junior fair will be south of the coliseum, with no general parking allowed anywhere else on the fairgrounds. General admission to the junior fair will not be granted without an entry wrist band, and patrons are not permitted to walk the fairgrounds as usual. Each exhibitor participating in the junior fair gets one wrist band for themselves, plus six additional wristbands for family members to attend their showing. Junior fair advisors will also receive one wrist band each. The wrist bands will be distributed through the

junior fair coordinators, similar to how parking passes have been distributed in previous years. By Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine’s mandate, all visitors permitted into the fairgrounds must, at all times, wear a mask when unable to consistently maintain six feet of distance from other attendees. Exhibitions in the junior fair are limited to 10 participants at a time, and wearing a mask is not required by those participating in an event, but social distancing measures are to be followed whenever possible. The meeting featured a lengthy public forum in which members of the community presented on issues ranging from cleaning duties to the sale of livestock from the junior fair. One attendee was particularly upset about the sale of his children’s hogs when, as he argued, he would be better suited to keep the animals due to rising meat prices caused by COVID-19. “The coronavirus has caused the price of a pound of bacon to rise to nearly six dollars,” the resident argued. “I don’t want to be forced to sell my hog for $40 to $50 when I could just take it home and save money in the long run not having to buy meat.” This prompted the board to carry a motion that allows junior fair participants to make their own decision on whether or not they want to keep or sell their hog. Nickol Monuments provided valuable insight into how to repair the headstones. “I can’t give everyone enough credit for the donations or enough thanks to all those who came out to help with the project,” Wykes said. “Of all the memories I have of being a scout, this project by far is the most memorable over the years because of them.” Wykes, a 2020 graduate of Greenville High School, is the son of Steve and Janalyn Wykes. Shop owner Destiny Phlipot moved into the location at 410 S. Broadway several months ago and her storefront business is now up and running. “I moved in here in March,” Phlipot said. “It took from March to June to take it from a coffee shop to a rock shop.” Phlipot has had a love of rocks since she was a young girl growing up in rural Indiana. “I realized it when I was six or seven and I would collect rocks and then go out by the road and try to sell them to vehicles going by,” Phlipot said. “Of course, that was only one or two vehicles, where we lived was pretty rural. And no one ever bought them, but I guess that was when I realized I was a ‘rock hound’.” As she grew older, Phlipot realized what she wanted to do. “I saw people [in crystal stores] and I thought that would be a dream job,” Phlipot said. “That I would like doing something like that.”

The gospel message, and therefore, the power of God, stops right there. If someone will not admit their sin, there is no need for a Saviour from sin. The gospel is made null and void. The preaching of sin, punishment because of sin, and the need for a Saviour have long been absent from many American pulpits.
