Versailles’ Jackie Stonebraker takes over as the schools high school principal after a successful Lady Tigers basketball coaching career.

Stonebraker named new Versailles principal Steps down as girls basketball coach

VERSAILLES – The Versailles High School held a special school board meeting Wednesday, July 3 at 7 a.m. to approve Jacki Stonebraker as the school’s new high school principal. “I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to do this in my career with the support of the community,” said Stonebraker. “I feel like the support of the administration, the support of the teachers, the support of the community itself, there is no other place I would rather be.” Stonebraker, a graduate of Bowling Green State University played basketball for the Lady Falcons after a stellar career at Versailles before returning to her alma mater to teach while coaching the girls varsity basketball team. “I have mixed emotions,” Stonebraker said. “It’s been 20 great years in the classroom and on the basketball court with the girls and my students. I still enjoy the classroom, I still enjoy coaching and I don’t think that will ever go away. “There were a couple of signs I just felt like that were coming at me and you never know if you’re going to get the chance again being half way though my teaching

career,” added Stonebraker. “I feel like it was maybe now or never and I don’t want to look back and have any regrets.” Coach Stonebraker completed her master’s degree immediately following graduating from Bowling Green State University. “I got my masters right out of college and worked towards my principalship right away,” stated Stonebraker. “There is a lot that has changed over the last 20 years since I’ve taken those classes so there is a lot to learn. There are a lot of seminars to go to, even some more classes that I feel like I need to take. With all that time and energy that has to be put into this job I just felt like coaching was not going happen anymore.” The new position will still allow Stonebraker to be involved with her school-aged children’s activities. “It is still a job that I can see my kids, all their sporting events and do all those things that I do with them,” Stonebraker noted. “It still gives me that flexibility but yet still further myself in my career.” Contact Sports Editor Gaylen Blosser at gblosser@ aimmediamidwest.com or (937) 853-6390-Ext. 1751. The complainant told dispatch he heard his neighbors yelling while on their front porch. The officer heard the offender, Robert White yelling across the street to a male subject. As soon as officers left the scene, the complainant called the police department again and said White came back out of his

house and began yelling again. An officer went back to the home and spoke with witnesses who explained as soon as police left the first time, White began yelling obscenities, which included statements against the police officers. White was issued a citation for persistent disorderly conduct. Assault On June 28 an officer was called to the intersection of Euclid Avenue and Pine Street on the report of a fight. Sweitzer Street residence. DUI On June 30 an officer was patrolling the 300 block of South Broadway Street and observed a vehicle backing out of a parking space. The vehicle backed into the north bound lane and was facing the wrong direction. The vehicle accelerated and reached the speed of 38 mph in the 25 mph zone. The officer conducted a traffic stop and found Misty Gilbert as the operator of the vehicle. The officer noticed Gilbert had very slurred speech when she spoke. Gilbert admitted to drinking while she was at Rooster’s Coop. The officer asked Gilbert to exit the vehicle to perform standardized field sobriety tests, on which she did poorly. Gilbert was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. She was transported to the police department where she agreed to take a breath test. Gilbert was placed under an administrative license suspension. She was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence,

speeding and marked lanes. Gilbert was released to her husband. Wanted Person On June 28 officers were dispatched to the area of 600 Sweitzer Street in reference to two males looking into parked cars. The officer located two males who fit the description walking south on Sweitzer Street near Euclid Avenue. The males matched the description the complainant provided. The officer learned the names of the two males, with one of them explaining they were just out walking and they hadn’t been looking into cars. As the officer was driving away to speak to another officer, dispatch confirmed one of the males had a felony warrant for burglary. The two males were found walking on Sweitzer a couple blocks away. One of them appeared to want to run, so an officer grabbed his arm and advised him to drop his back pack. The subject asked if he had a warrant and was told he would receive an explanation after he was handcuffed. The subject gave a Social Secu-

rity Number, but quickly rescinded that number and told officers that it was his brother’s SSN. He eventually gave his real information, including his name - Ryan Keen. Keen said he had a warrant for his arrest, which he said is why he lied to officers. Keen’s identify was confirmed by a description of his neck and wrist tattoos given to dispatch. Keen was told he was now under arrest for his warrants from Darke County, including failure to appear for possession of drugs and/or drug abuse instruments, DUS, expired registration and giving false information to law enforcement. When Keen was searched officers located two small plastic bags, one containing a crystalline substance which appeared to be methamphetamine and the other was 1/2 of a pill believed to be Suboxone. Keen was transported to the Darke County Jail and was incarcerated for the listed warrants and held with a bond of $5,050. All illicit items were transported to the GPD and will be sent to BCI for analysis.

Barbecue and Blues sponsors recognized GREENVILLE – Darke County Center for the Arts recognizes sponsors of the upcoming Barbecue and Blues fundraiser. The music for this year’s fun-filled event is sponsored by Matt and Angie Arnold, George and Becky Luce, and Ben and Gail Overholser, which will take place on the Greenville Public Library lawn on Friday, July 12. “DCCA is fortunate to be part of a community where individuals and local businesses help make Darke County a great place to live,” DCCA’s Executive Director Andrea Jordan stated. The sponsorships will help cover the cost of the entertainment allowing the ticket monies generated from Barbecue and Blues to help offset the costs of presenting high quality performing artists throughout DCCA’s upcoming 20192020 season. “Local support of fundraising events is greatly appreciated and enables DCCA to continue encouraging cultural enrichment in Darke County and to offer opportunities for learning and growing through the arts,” concluded Jordan. Gates for Barbecue and Blues will open at 5 p.m. Music will be provided by the Eric Jerardi Band and special guest Austin “Walkin’ Cane,” playing from 5:30-10:30 p.m. Featured BBQ food vendors include Main Street Greenville businesses The Merchant House and Romer’s Catering, and local food truck favorites Nacho Pig and The Homestead

Spud. DCCA will be selling and expanded offering of wine, as well as micro brews from Moeller Brew Barn for $5 a glass, with proceeds going to the arts in Darke County. DCCA Artistic Director David Warner says that “Barbecue and Blues has become an extremely popular summertime event. This is a great opportunity to celebrate the season with lively, listenable music in a lovely setting.” The proceeds from Barbecue and Blues support DCCA programming, helping make possible DCCA’s Arts in Education program as well as the Family Theatre Series and a summer theatre residency by Missoula Children’s Theatre. “Without fundraisers such as these, DCCA could not provide AIE at no charge to students, Family Theatre tickets for $5, or hands-on theatre experience with MCT at no cost to participants. DCCA is grateful to the Greenville Public Library for hosting this fantastic event,” Warner concluded. Additional sponsors of the event include Merry Lee Cross and Shaun Hayes of BHHS Pro Realty, Matt & Mindy Steyer and Zechar Bailey Funeral Home. Other sponsors are Erwin Brothers, Rumpke, Sue Bowman of HER Realtors, and the John R. and Miriam H. Knick Fund. Proceeds from Barbecue and Blues support DCCA programming; helping make possible DCCA’s Arts in Education program as well as the Family Theatre Series and a summer

Loving my Chryslers ….so far If you don’t know by now, I am now the owner of another vehicle. I just hated to give up my PT Cruiser, which I had for a little over three years and three months, but she, like me, was showing her age and getting a little rusty. And, when you drive a car for that length of time and something doesn’t seem quite right, you know it. Last August, when I took my car in for a late oil change, my mechanic (Roger) came back out and congratulated me, telling me I should buy a lottery ticket. I apologized profusely for being late for the oil change and he said, “No, I’ve never seen a PT Cruiser get 196,000 miles.” Then, I knew I might be in trouble, hoping that it would last me a little bit longer. I think it was then I asked him to be on the lookout for a different vehicle in the spring. Well, a couple of weeks ago, he changed the oil again and then pointed to a car just outside the office window and asked how I would like that. I debated and debated (with myself). Do I want to go with a smaller vehicle or not? At that time, I still hadn’t looked the car over. The PT Cruiser was great for hauling things. I recycle and every other week or so, I, with the help of a friend, take my bagged-up recyclables to the bin in town. And, that was handy. How am I going to do that in a smaller car, I asked myself, to which I replied, “I don’t know.” The Cruiser was acting a little “iffy” after he told me about the car, which I thought ‘what if it’s a sign from above?’ Why wouldn’t it be? I prayed a lot when I was in search of my last car and I was “heaven-sent” the PT Cruiser. Then one recent Friday, while at home, I decided to get the ball rolling. I made a few phone calls and learned that the car was still available and, by the end of the day, it was basically mine. We just had to “legalize” it. I didn’t even check the car out until I went to pick it up and learned that it was spacious and the inside sort of resembled my PT Cruiser. Did I say it was also a Chrysler? Yes,

it’s a Sebring (named after my cousin Evelyn’s family), only it is a year older than the Cruiser. I thought to myself because of its age, I’m not bettering myself. However, what really attracted me to it was the numbers on the odometer, 119,000-plus. If I put 10,000 miles on it like I did with the PT in 3-plus years, it’ll take quite a while before I get it over 200,000 miles. What a bargain! And, unlike me and the PT, there is no rust. It may not be a glamorous vehicle or an expensive auto, but it’s mine (and the bank’s). I’m loving it. ***** Please pray for: Lindsey Purnhagen, Albert Duncan, John Jenkins Jr., Larry Arnett, Craig Wagner, Vanna Hannan, Danny Foster, Jamie Campbell, Cynthia Downey, Roger Tingley, Greg Comer, Frank Fullenkamp, Cheri Antrobus Davis, Haskel Howard, Guadalupe Self, Paul Brubaker, Lila Pinney, Bill Gibbons, Randy Hammaker, Kelly Van De Grift, Marilyn Shellabarger, Chuck Davis, Merlin “Bus” Booker, Randy Heck, Ron and Nancy Moody, Danny Brown, Neal Gray, Terri Hunt, Jack Hale, Jessi Klosterman, Marilyn Peterson, Dakota Miller, Jack Good, Mary Faller, Mary Ullery, Wayne Neal, Martha Higgins, Scott Clark, Duke Temple, Paulette (Swab) Shields, Neil Isch, Larry Hummel, Phyllis Turner, Kerry Young, Dale Clark, Judi Peters, Linda Birt Schaffer, Herbert Bayman, Adam Ullery, Vicky Henderson, Don Hittle, Emily Moody, Roger McEowen, Becky GarrettRoss, Darcy Buckingham, Crew Neaves, Jackson Stout, Katie Rehmert, Alayna Marie Brantley, Irma Stewart, Dawn Oldiges, Don Booker, Tracy Pratt, Jim Marker, Mason Osterloh, Kyndal Wynk, Ron Kreitzer, Stacy Dorko, Keith Starks, Kohen Thwaits, Jerrod Pratt, Al Bliss, Layna Best, Wanda and Joe Bailey, Shelly Hoffman, Pappy Harshman, Bob Hiestand Jr., Tina Kiser Deaton, Kody Ketring, Lois Hittle, Kevin Hemmerich, Samantha Smith and Ron Kramer. ***** Jamie and I send our condolences to the families of: Everett “Junior” Coby, Marvin Kochersperger, Sam Lindamood, Troy York, Gene Oliver, Ray Lutz, James C. Greenville hosts AMA race GREENVILLE – More than 200 riders took to the Darke County Fairgrounds half mile track Friday night with the top names in the country taking to the dirt track. “It doesn’t get any bigger than Jerrod (Mees),” said Pensacola, Florida’s Robert D. McLendon and race promoter. ”He’s the Grand National Champion four times now, so it’s a win-win night.” “The second place ranked rider Dalton Gautheir (Pine Grove, PA) is also here,” continued McLendon. “Other big names, Brandon Price (White Hall, MD), Justin Jones (Holley, NY), Tanner Dean (Tocoma, WA) and Cameron Smith (Coatesville, PA). There are a good 10-15 riders here that could win a National any given time plus some of the country’s fastest amateurs come out for this race, so it’s not just me that loves Greenville, riders in general really love Greenville.” The nation’s current leader and fastest rider riding the No. 1 bike, Jared “Jammer” Mees (Sebastion, FL) was in town with his Indian Team motorcycle crew. The Multi-time Grand National Champion has an impressive Flat Track resume including a Gold Medalist in the 2016 X Games and currently stands as the No. 1 racer in the Nation. “I’ve had some good results here,” noted Mees. “I raced a Grand National here back in the day, so it’s been good. “I’ve been com-

Annie Oakley Classic nears GREENVILLE – The Greenville Citizens Baseball League (GCBL) will be hosting the 33rd annual Annie Oakley Classic baseball tournament July 12-14 at Greenville’s Sater Heights Ballpark, home of the GCBL. “This was the city’s original tournament” said GCBL commissioner Ryan Delk. “Back in the day they had one tournament. It was started it 30 some years ago. For many years, a good 15-20 this was the only one they had every year – so it was very well known.” “It started back in the 50’s by our fathers and grandfathers,” Delk said of Sater Park. “They started from scratch out here.

That’s a pretty big feat. I can’t imagine what they went through to get to where we are today.” Teams competing in the Friday, Saturday and Sunday weekend tournament will include 8U, 9U, 10U, 12U, 13U and 14U teams. “We are up to 32 or more teams,” Delk noted. “We still have a few spots open in 8U and 10U but the rest of them are filled up.” Licensed officials will make up the umpiring crews for all games played with each team guaranteed to play no less than three games. “We use an arbiter to schedule our umpires,” Delk stated. “They are all Ohio High School certified umpires whether they are officiating an 8U game or a 14U game. Those guys are used to doing 16, 17 year old high school kids and hats off to those guys out

there in the heat.” “Sometime fans, parents and coaches get a little frustrated with them and they shake it off and do their job,” continued Delk. “They are there for the kids – yes they get paid, but at the end of the day they stand out there in the heat all day – it’s not just for the check.” The GCBL program, known for its excellent concession stand food and drinks will once again showcase Winners Meats. “The concession stand will be rockin’,” said Delk. “We’re going to have Winners marinated pork chops and Winners hamburgers again. We will have the Walking Tacos, hot dogs and Sno Shack will be there.” The Sater Park concession stand provides a convenient place for parents to feed the entire family very

reasonably without leaving the park when games start stacking up. “Our food is not highpriced,” said Delk. “It is something that a family can stay at the park and not have to leave, eat an affordable meal and feed the whole family a good meal. People love the pork chops, people love the hamburgers. They are all grilled.” “We buy good quality products,” Delk continued. “It is something we pride ourselves on. You always have that option to stay at the park, especially on Sunday when you may be playing back-to-back-toback-to-back tournament games and you need to feed your family. We have umpires that come up and say, ‘save me back five pork chops because when I get done that’s what I want to take home.’” “With my son playing

Junior Legion ball we did some traveling to Michigan,” shared Delk. “It was a great city where we went but the ballfield wasn’t that great, no concessions, a porta-john, mediocre field and you had to play $8 a person to get in and watch your kid play, so I think sometimes we take it for granted here in Greenville and Darke County.” The Annie Oakley Classic brings many teams from a far distance to the community for the weekend. “Teams from Chillicothe,

Dayton, Cincinnati, Indiana teams, a lot of teams that come and stay all night, stay in the hotels, camp at the fairgrounds go to the Maid Rite, go to McDonalds, the gas stations, sunflower seeds, Gatorade, Walmart all those things,” Delk conclude. “It definitely has a positive financial impact on the city.” Contact Sports Editor Gaylen Blosser at gblosser@aimmediamidwest.com or (937) 853-6390-Ext. 1751. Pretty impressive.” For host Mississinawa Valley, the vote was disappointing, but the effort was rewarding. “We always like to see Mississinawa Valley come out on top,” said co-FFA advisor and blood drive coordinator Gwen Bergman. “We’ve had someone here donating the whole time, from either side.” Ansonia got a boost from loyal faculty donors, including art teacher Danielle Rhonemus and current events teacher Eugene Hoening. “I usually donate when the blood drives are at school,” said Eugene, who has taught at Ansonia for 39 years. “I left work a little early today to make it down here. I’m hoping I can push us to victory!” “I always make sure I do the Grudge Match,” said

Ansonia’s Angie Brown. “My kids went there, all three graduated from Ansonia. And I know my blood type O positive is needed. I’ve had a couple of phone calls saying my blood was used. It’s always good to hear your blood saved somebody.” It’s back to work for Mississinawa FFA member Luke Livingston. He will be showing pigs at the Darke County Fair for the ninth year, and at the Ohio State Fair. “We work with our animals all summer,” said Luke. Ansonia FFA members Kenzie Singer and Kylee Winner have finished work on the FFA’s red, white and blue float for Ansonia’s “Bold Stripes, Bright Stars, Brave Hearts” parade on July 6. CBC’s Dana Puterbaugh presented the CBC community service award to Midmark Global Philanthropic & Corporate Giving Manager Mitch Eiting and Media & Communications Manager Susan Kaiser at Midmark’s May 16 employee blood drive.

Midmark hits Leon, Wolfe certified 5,000th donation GREENVILLE – State of the Heart Care is proud to announce that two of their nurses, Bridgette Leon and Jennifer Wolfe, just became Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses last week. These exams are very rigorous and require a substantial amount of studying and knowledge of palliative and hospice care. Once they pass the exam, they must then obtain 100 hours of continuing education credits every four years to maintain their certification. Maintaining this certification shows Leon and Wolfe’s determination and commitment to nursing, allowing patients and their families to know that they have gone the extra mile with their education. Currently, 16 RNs and all seven

VERSAILLES – Community Blood Center honored Midmark Corp. with a new award for community service during the May 16 employee blood drive at the Midmark Versailles location. The crystal blood drop award is in recognition of Midmark’s dedication to hosting CBC blood drives, exemplified by the 5,000th employee donation Midmark celebrated on Nov. 27, 2018. The May 16 blood drive registered 50 donors and added another 33 donations to Midmark’s total. “We’re constantly getting new donors, said Mitch Eiting, global philanthropic and corporate giving manager for Midmark. “We’re growing as a company and

our team members promote it, which is awesome.” Midmark began partnering with CBC in 2011 by hosting three blood drives and allowing teammates (employees) the time to donate while on the clock. By 2013, the number increased to 16, including night shift blood drives for the first time. Midmark now averages 18 blood drives per year. “Midmark is about working together,” said team member Tom Schulze, who made his milestone 25th lifetime donation at the May 16 blood drive. “All my donations have been here, and I hope to do a lot more.” Learn more at www.GivingBlood.org

New voting machines arrive Allows voter review, simpler tabulation

GREENVILLE — Out with the old, in with the new is fitting for the new voting equipment that arrived at the Darke County Board of Elections on Wednesday. According to Paul Schlecty, Darke County Board of Elections director, the outgoing Diebold TSX voting machines were originally designed 17 years ago and utilized in the county over the last 14 years. It was time for an upgrade, one made possible thanks in large part to a state grant. The price of the new voting system was $714,334, but the grant covered most of the purchase price ($650,222.36) with county commissioners agreeing to pay the remaining $64,111.64. The new machines, ExpressVote, provided by Election Systems and Software, an Omaha, Nebraska-based company, will still be a touch screen and ADA (American Disabilities Act) compliant. However, there are a few significant changes, such as a printed paper ballot that will include a barcode

Bethany J. Royer-DeLong | Darke County Media

This DS200 Digital Scanner Voting Machine is one of two backups that will be utilized at the Board of Elections on Garst Ave. Collapsible tabulators (not shown) will be located at each polling station in the county. at the top. Voters insert the ballot into the voting machine which reads the barcode and displays the appropriate voting options according to the district. The voter’s results are printed on the paper ballot allowing for review before they submit it to a digital tabulator. The digital tabulator not only provides security but also makes vote tabulation easier. Instead of collecting information

from each TSX voting machine, nearly 200 in the county, explained Schlecty, poll workers collect information from only one digital tabulator at each of the thirty voting locations. According to Schlecty, the new machines must be used in the upcoming 2019 elections, so everyone has experience before the 2020 election. The Board of Elections plans to host an open house to allow voters an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the new machines. Anyone interested in helping at the polls is encouraged to contact the BOE. It is an opportunity to serve one’s community as a service or to earn some extra cash. The BOE is also working on a new high school program to recruit high school seniors. Working at the polls is a great opportunity and adds to one’s job resume or college application. If interested, stop by the BOE office at 300 Garst Ave. or call 937/548-1835. Reach reporter Bethany J. RoyerDeLong at 937/548-3330 or email broyer-delong@aimmediamidwest. com. GREENVILLE – Outdoor dining and new stamped concrete sidewalks in downtown Greenville will have to wait and may not get done this summer. Cassie Campbell, managing partner with The Merchant House, presented a proposal to Greenville City Council on Tuesday asking to lease the city’s right-of-way and establish an outdoor dining area. Council President John Burkett delayed a decision by turning the matter over to the safety committee and asking for a report by the second meeting in August. Burkett originally asked for the report at the first meeting in September, but because the city is planning to remove the brick pavers and replace them with stamped concrete along South Broadway in the downtown district, he moved up the deadline by two weeks. However, Safety Service Director Curt Garrison told council he was ready to bring legislation to council at their next to put the project out for bid. Because both projects work in conjunction with each other, the sidewalk project will also be delayed until the safety committee presents its report. Campbell wants to follow the lead of the restaurant 600 Downtown in Bellefontaine in building an attractive outdoor dining area in front of The Merchant House. In order to accomplish this goal, the restaurant would need to eliminate three to four parking spots on South Broadway. The dining area would partially jet out into the current parking area and pedestrians would have a sidewalk around the dining area. According to Campbell and Garrison, there would be an addi-

tional two to three feet of space from the curb to the lane of travel. Campbell believes outdoor dining would allow the business to increase its staff by 25 percent and would increase sales by 20 percent. The Merchant House is also asking the city to assess the cost of the sidewalk. The city previously transferred CIP (Capital Improvements Program) funds for the paver replacement project. The estimated cost to replace the pavers with stamped concrete is $338,000. The city will also repair sections of the sidewalk on the side streets with an approximate cost of $275,000. Garrison said the city is prepared to advertise for bids, but agreed council would need to make a decision on The Merchant House proposal before the paver replacement project could begin. The Safety Committee will meet on Monday, July 8, 6 p.m., in the City Council Chambers in the Municipal Building, Greenville, to review right-of-way improvements to the Merchant House in conjunction with the South Broadway sidewalk project. Garrison also gave council a proposal to run conduit along the side streets while this project is being

done in the event the city would decide to install acorn-style street lights in the future. The cost to run the conduit only, no electric, is estimated at $135,000. Although funds have already been approved for the paver replacement and sidewalk repair project in the downtown area, council would need to approve the additional funds to run the conduit. In other business, council gave preliminary approval to proceed with obtaining an Ohio Public Works Grant in the amount of $800,000 to rebuild Ohio Street from Martin to the bridge. The work would include new infrastructure, the addition of a bicycle lane and the expansion of the sidewalks on the bridge. The city is working towards completing rebuilding the length of Ohio Street from Martin to Fourth Street, but the total cost would be approximately $5 million. Garrison suggested completing the project in phases. This first phase would cost $1.6 million with half being paid through the $800,000 grant. According to Garrison, completion of the project would be contingent upon receiving the grant. Contact Editor Ryan Berry at rberry@ aimmediamidwest.com or (937) 5690066. Students earn WAVE rewards GREENVILLE — At the start of the 2018-2019 school year, Greenville Middle School staff chose the theme “Be Kind” as the school-wide positive behavior focus. Students were reminded to treat each other with respect and to be a source of support for one another. Additionally, in March, students were gathered in the gym to listen to Gian Paul Gonzalez. Gonzalez is a motivational speaker who worked with the New York Giants the year that they won the Super Bowl. He brought his message of “All In” to students at Greenville Middle School, encouraging them to give their “all” to what is most passionate to them. To end the school year on a positive note, the Greenville Middle School PBIS (Positive Behavior) team supported the school-wide themes of Be Kind and All In as their choice of 4th quar-

ter rewards for students. They chose two incentives to encourage students to make good choices. The first incentive was attendance based and was built around the Ohio AIR tests. Students in grades 5 and 8 were tested in the areas of language arts, math, and science. Students in grades 6 and 7 were tested in the areas of language arts and math. Six days were chosen as testing days at the Middle School. In keeping with Gonzalez’s theme, students were asked to show that they were All In for testing by attending school on the six testing days and putting forth their best effort. Students who had only one excused day of absence attended a dance on the last day of school. Those who were in attendance during all six days earned the dance and ice cream. The second incentive was tied to student
