2017 GREAT DARKE COUNTY FAIR GUIDE-THE EARLY BIRD

How much do you know about the fair? GREENVILLE – This may be the 161st fair, but has it really been 161 years since it began? The Darke County Fair has a great history that has survived war, epidemics, tragedy and is currently witnessing its 32nd President of the United States. The Darke County Fair began in 1853, when Franklin Pierce served as the 14th president of the United States. But, it was on Nov. 24, 1852, when approximately 30 citizens from all parts of Darke County met at the Darke County Courthouse in Greenville, organized the Darke County Agricultural Society and elected the following officers for the ensuing year: I.N. Gard, president; George W. Coover, vice-president; Alfred Kitchen, treasurer; and Noah Arnold, secretary. This fair board also selected the following members to be managers of the first fair – Ruben Lowry,

New Madison, W.C. Deem, Palestine, J.H. Martin, Greenville, R. Gilpatrick, New Madison, S. Horner, Gettysburg and Nicholas York, Brock. Within a year the society had 320 members in Darke County and the first Darke County Fair was held in the Garst Woods on Sept. 7 and 8, 1853. This woodland was located north of Vice-President George Coover’s farm house, or on the exact spot the Darke County Historical Society’s Garst Museum now sits. The newspaper of the time, The Mad Anthony, published in Greenville, had this to say about the first Darke County Fair in its issue of Sept. 14, 1853. “On the whole the first Darke County Fair reflects great credit upon our county of Darke, and should inspire every citizen with zeal in this cause. We anticipate having one of the largest county fairs

in 1854 that was ever held in the state of Ohio. So, why not call it The Great Darke County Fair after this date?” No doubt this is how our county fair was named The Great Darke County Fair. Among the Lucy Gard Arnold papers left to her by her grandfather, I.N. Gard, which papers are now on file at the Garst Museum, are the minutes of the second Darke County annual Fair held in the Garst Woods on Sept. 12 and 14, 1854, which minutes read as follows: “There was a balance of $271 on hand from the 1853 fair before $200 was received from the County Commissioners. This year (1854) $580 was received from the sale of tickets at the gate and $143 was received from the sale of lumber. Our expenses were $22 and premiums paid amounted to $363. The balance being carried over for the 1855 fair

3

was $510.” The minutes were signed by I.N. Gard, president, and Noah Arnold, secretary. In the first few years of Darke County Fairs, the fair boards bought new lumber each year to build fences around their fairgrounds and then after the fairs were over, sold this used lumber at public auction. The “Garst Woods” fairgrounds were moved in 1858 to where Oakwood is now located in the city of Greenville, at which location the first harness racing was held on the new race track built for this purpose. The Oakwood race track, in part, is now being used for city streets in the section of the city. In 1870, the Oakwood fairgrounds was moved to the present location. No Darke County Fair were held in the years of 1862 and 1863, due to the Civil War and 1949, due to the Polio epidemic that existed at that time.

Coates selected as 2017 Fair Grand Marshal BY SUSAN HARTLEY STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com DARKE COUNTY – A familiar face will be back at the Darke County Fairgrounds this August – not as grounds caretaker – but as the 2017 Parade Grand Marshal. “I was kind of surprised,” said Ken Coates Sr. of being named Grand Marshal. “But I sort of had an idea they might ask. I’ve sat through those meetings before and know how they work. I was pleasantly surprised.” Coates of Greenville, who calls himself a “city boy,” retired in November 2016, after working for 15 years with the fairgrounds. He retired from Frigidaire in Dayton before starting his work with the Darke County Agricultural Society, starting out as a mower before moving on to the assistant caretaker. For the past eight years, Coates has been head caretaker for the fairground’s

195 acres, 53 buildings, 20 restrooms, 228 horse stalls, as well as equipment and other items used for the fair and non-fair events. His favorite job during fair week? “The entertainment,” Coates said. “Setting up and being able to see all the stars. Meeting and talking to all the people. It was a pretty good experience.” Retirement, though, has kept Coates pretty busy. “I’m working on my honey-do list,” he said of the things he’s been doing around the house, as per his wife Ona. The couple have three chil-

dren, Michele, Wendy and Ken Jr., four grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. Coates will be recognized during the Grand Opening Ceremony of the 161st Great Darke

County Fair at 8 a.m., Friday, Aug. 18, and also at the annual Parade of Champions event in front of the Grandstand at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24.

Illumination will have fair booth GREENVILLE – The Illumination Festival Committee will once again have a booth at the Great Darke County Fair. The committee will be celebrating 11-years of bringing great contemporary gospel music at the fairgrounds on Sept. 16. This year’s featured artists include David Crowder, Family Force 5, Citizen Way and Chris August. Saturday evening will feature the headline concert, but there is much to do throughout the day, including music at the Coffee House with regional bands performing. Come early and enjoy the Midway activities from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Coffee House artists include

Jacob Shane & Co., SafeKept and Noah Back. More information on the Illumination Festival can be found at www.illuminationfestival.org or visit their booth in the Coliseum during the fair. Tickets will be available at the Darke County Fair Box Office during the fair or by visiting the festival’s website or www. darkecountyfair.com. Tickets are $30 for general admission (grandstand only – does not include track), $35 for track (standing only), $35 for box or reserved seating (includes track), and $55 VIP seating (chairs on the track in front of the stage. Tickets are an additional $5 the day of the show.

Littles will celebrate animation GREENVILLE – Get ready for the 2017 Great Darke County Fair Little Miss and Mr. Pageant. The pageant will take place in the fairground’s Youth Building, located behind the gazebo on Monday, Aug. 21, with the boys starting at 5:30 p.m. and the girls starting at 6:30 p.m. This year’s theme is “Celebration Animation,” a themed and judged event. The children will bring their favorite animated character to life! Fairgoers will see creative and outside the box thinkers from Darke County children, ages 3-5 years. In addition to the themed contest, there will also be a most photogenic contest for a boy and girl this year. For any questions, contact The Flower Patch at 548-5675. Three-year-old Isaac Rausch and fiveyear-old Sierra Johnson were crowned 2016 Little Miss and Mister Darke County Fair. (Ryan Berry photo)

2017 GREAT DARKE COUNTY FAIR GUIDE-THE EARLY BIRD

Rismiller brings excitement to position BY RYAN BERRY MANAGING EDITOR editor@earlybirdpaper.com

GREENVILLE – Brian Rismiller has been on the job as the Darke County Fair manager since April, but he’s a little nervous as this year’s fair approaches. Although he has been a director for the past 11 years, it will be his first with all eyes on him and watching his decisions. He understands their will be comparisons of how he operates compared to his predecessor, but Rismiller hopes this fair will go off seamlessly. He is taking a page from the Disney playbook and is adopting their way of doing business. “It may not be our fault, but it is our problem,” said Rismiller. When problems arise, Rismiller wants to take a proactive approach. Whether it be a director, caretaker, Junior Fair King or Queen or any of the volunteers, if an issue arises, such as a lost child, medical problem, someone needing

directions, etc., that his crew will be proactive and not just sit on the sideline hoping someone else will take care of the problem. He wants people leaving the fairgrounds with a good experience, which will ultimately bring them back again and again. As far as the fair manager’s position goes, Rismiller said, “I’ve acquainted myself, but I’m not 100 percent. There is a lot to learn.” However, he is relying on his volunteers and staff to get him through. He is already starting to hear from the department heads and they are letting him know what they need. He did pledge that the fairgrounds will be ready for the 161st edition of the Great Darke County Fair, but admitted he may not be ready. Not only will the fair have a new face in the front office, but there is also a new caretaker this year. Rismiller pointed they have a plan of action and

Enjoy The The Enjoy GreatDarke Darke Great County Fair Fair County

are working diligently in being ready for the fair. While fairgoers shouldn’t expect to see major changes this year, he did say they should look for subtle changes. One of those changes is the addition of a Trout Pond in an area that seemed to be separate from the fairgrounds. The area will be where Kissel Bros. had their bunk house and compound. They will be moving them to make way for the addition. Generally one of the darker places on the

fairgrounds, the board will be adding some lighting to make it a little brighter and accessible. Rismiller grew up two blocks from the fair and it has always been a part of his life. He remembers excitedly riding his bike to the fair and parking it outside of Gate 2 and spending the whole day on the fairgrounds. While he may not be riding his bicycle to work, you can be sure he still has the same excitement for the Great Darke County Fair.

2017 GREAT DARKE COUNTY FAIR GUIDE-THE EARLY BIRD

Red Cross offers tips to have a great fair GREENVILLE – The tents are going up, animals are getting baths and you can almost smell the funnel cakes; nine days and nights of rides, exhibitions, grandstand entertainment, 4-H shows and food, providing those who attend a marvelous time at the great Darke County Fair! To ensure that you continue to have a marvelous time, the American Red Cross offers these safety tips for fairgoers: * Be aware of the animals around you and their environment. Cows still kick and horses still bite - even if they are on their best “fair” behavior. If your child doesn’t grow up with livestock, talk to them about petting, standing too close to animals and respecting their space. Even if your child is raised in an environment where they are used to animals, animals not their own may respond differently than what they are

used to dealing with and the livestock at the fair is out of their normal environment. * When allowing older children to enjoy the fair independently, make sure you meet up with them frequently, which will allow them their fun, but also allow you to keep tabs on any ongoing situations. Make sure that children coming to the fair alone have a way to contact you at all times. In case of an emergency or if any medical treatment is needed, children under 18 will need a parent’s or guardian’s signature to be released from emergency medical services care. * Establish with your younger children what to do if they become separated from you and “you” become lost. Tell them, who they should ask for help, where to go, who can they trust and how to deal with strangers. The Red Cross maintains a comfort station near EMS and Sheriff at the

North End of the grandstands. This makes an excellent meeting place. * Carry with you a compact “first-aid kit” consisting of Band-Aids, pain relievers, emergency phone numbers, and antacids. Sunscreen is also a commonly forgotten item when attending the fair. * Pace yourself-there is plenty of fair and the time to

enjoy it. Especially with hot weather, make sure that you drink plenty of water before you arrive. There are a variety of comfort and respite centers across the fairgrounds, stop in for water and rest your feet. Be aware of heat exhaustion symptoms, especially in the very young and the elderly who are the most susceptible.

Election is Aug. 24 GREENVILLE – The Darke County Agricultural Society will hold its election of directors on Aug. 24, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., during the Great Darke County Fair. Four positions are up for election this year, currently held by Russ Bennett, Richard Delk, Ed Erisman and Cindy Riffle. The position to fill the remainder of a vacant term will also be up for election. Candidates must get petitions from the Secretary of

the Fairgrounds and have 10 holders of membership tickets of the Society, sign name. As of Oct. 1, 2014, candidates are required to attend two Fairboard meetings prior to picking up a Fairboard petition. The petitions must be turned in to the Secretary Brian Rismiller, at his office under the grandstand by 9 a.m., Aug. 17. The filing fee is $10 per candidate.

2017 GREAT DARKE COUNTY FAIR GUIDE-THE EARLY BIRD

Wayne offers cool spot for moms and babies BY SUSAN HARTLEY STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com DARKE COUNTY –Moms and babies who need a break during the county fair are invited once again to stop by the Wayne HealthCare tent. For more than 20 years, the hospital has provided a private spot for moms to feed and change their babies. The tent, which is open from 12-9 p.m. every day of fair week, is manned by volunteers.

Co-chairs Terri Flood, Wayne’s marketing director and Susanne Barga, director of volunteer programs, say offering the space is a natural fit for the healthcare center. “As a health and wellness center, we’re happy to support and provide a service for our community,” Flood said. “Especially for our moms who are breastfeeding, and for those who need a place to cool off.” Barga was asked to help

organize the tent project 20plus years ago, she said. Today, about 30 volunteers sign up to fill 54 slots. During the morning hours, volunteers help clean and organize the tent for its noon opening. Water, clean spots to change babies, a place to sit for a spell and cool off, as well as private spaces for feeding baby are provided. “We see some people three or four times a day,” Barga said of families who visit the tent,

35

which has numbered up to 1,000 for fair week, according to the number of baby changing pads used in the tent. About 15 years ago the hospital began providing air conditioning in the tent, thanks to Bolyard Heating & Cooling Inc. Also this year, Flood said, the hospital’s newest OBGYN, Dr. Jennifer Canan hopes to make a few visits to the tent during this year’s fair.

Neff welcomes visitors to 161st Darke Co Fair

As we the directors of the Darke County Agricultural Society look on the 161st fair, we want to welcome you to one of the oldest social events and educational activities in Darke County. As a leading county in agriculture, we thank all the Junior Fair and Open Show entries that make our fair so

great and all the department heads who do a great job keeping entries up and their departments running smooth. We would like to invite you to see and taste all the new menu items at this year’s fair and to experience the chainsaw carvings, bow and arrow demonstrations and BB gun target range. Our goal is

to provide a wide variety of entertainment for all fairgoers, this year being no exception with the Free Till Three on Thursday with free bike giveaway and a discounted sample item at many of the food vendors. Lastly, thank you to all the many volunteers that help, not only during the fair, but all

year round in the many areas of our fair. It is because of you that our fair is as great as it is. Hope you have a great 161st fair at the Great Darke County Fair. Dean Neff, president, Board of Direct, Darke Co. Agricultural Society

Flower shows to feature ‘Bucket List’ exhibits BY SUSAN HARTLEY STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com DARKE COUNTY – Judged as the best in Ohio, the Darke County Fair Flower Show is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year with exhibits centered on the theme of “Bucket List.” “We’ve tried to come up with class titles that have been on peoples’ bucket lists – for example places they’d like to visit,” explains Charlene Thornhill, president of the Darke County Association of Garden Clubs. This year’s fair will again host two shows – Saturday, Aug. 19 and Wednesday, Aug. 23. “We have closed judging, then it’s open to the public around 2:30 p.m.,” Thornhill said of the shows, held in the basement of the coliseum. The Darke County Fair’s flower and horticulture shows are judged by accredited judges, Thornhill said.

“Judges come from throughout the state,” Thornhill explained. For example, the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs provides judges, who Thornhill said “ask us to please invite them to come to our fair. They just enjoy coming to our flower shows.” Adults who exhibit in the artistic categories must grow their own flowers for the fair. “In adult artistic we may have at least 70 designs,” Thornhill said. “There’s usually 400-500 different horticulture exhibits for each of the shows.” Members of two adult clubs – Ladybug Garden Club and Wildflower Garden Club – as well as the Butterfies Garden Club for age 8-18 - exhibit during the fair. “The flower shows take the work of all members of the garden clubs. They put so much time in and give it their all. They produce an outstanding flower show for the public. For

many years, our flower shows have been the top in the state of Ohio.” Since the young Butterflies Garden Club members don’t really have a bucket list, Thornhill said this year’s junior exhibits will center on cancer awareness and the colors each of the cancer associations have chosen. For example, pink for breast cancer. “Each member has chosen a different cancer to research and their design must be the color of that cancer. For them it’s educational and hopefully during their lifetime they find a cure for cancer,” Thornhill said. A long-time Darke County garden club participant, Thornhill said she first began showing at the fair in 1955. “I started when I was a mere child,” she said. After a brief absence, she came back in 1969 and “has been in ever since.” Thornhill said the flower

shows are “so much more creative today than they were in year’s past. The artistic designs have improved so much. There’s more plant varieties available.” And this year’s weather has been a big help so far, Thornhill said. “We’ve had steady rain. I think it will be a good year.”

Fair hosts New Dawn

GREENVILLE – New Dawn was formed in 2009 when three gospel singers were united by a series of nonrelated events. Bruce Shank had been singing gospel music for many years with various groups as well as a soloist. His sister, Dixie Magee, joined him in 2006 and they performed as a duet. In late 2008, Bruce met Larry Hart, and discovered his vocal talents. Larry was asked to join Bruce and Dixie, and the trio, New Dawn, was formed. The songs they sing speak to the heart – each with its own meaning. They have released two CD’s, and perform at churches, fairs, festivals and benefits. New Dawn will be performing in the Gazebo at the Great Darke County Fair on Sunday, Aug. 20, at noon.

Heartland’s free lunch a tradition on Senior Citizens Day BY SUSAN HARTLEY STAFF WRITER shartley@earlybirdpaper.com DARKE COUNTY – A tradition for more than 35 years, Heartland of Greenville Nursing Home, has treated senior citizens to a free lunch during the Darke County Fair. On Senior Citizen Day, Monday, Aug. 21, seniors are again invited to drop by the Second National Bank Rest tent and enjoy a free lunch. The oldest fairgoer will be recognized at the SNB tent at 11 a.m., where the lunches also are being served. According to Beth Rindler of Heartland, this year’s sack lunch will include a ham salad sandwich, chips, piece of fruit, cookie and orange drink. “Our workers put together the sack lunches the morning of,” Rindler said. “We just kind of have an assembly line here and we put everything all

together.” All foods are donated by Heartland, Rindler noted, except the beverage, which is provided by Dean Reiter Dairy of Springfield. “It’s just kind of a nice thing to do,” said Rindler, dietary director for Heartland of Greenville. “A lot of times the senior citizens out at the fair are on a limited income and are there to enjoy seeing friends while at the fair. We want to make sure they have a nice lunch.” Rindler said about five dietary employees from Heartland will put together and hand out between 200250 sack lunches again this year. “It’s nice to say ‘hello’ and see some of the same faces from year to year,” she said. The SNB tent is located near the grandstand.

Monkeying around at the Darke Co. Fair

GREENVILLE – How much do you know about monkeys? You may learn something you didn’t know at this year’s Great Darke County Fair. From Aug. 20-26, the fair will welcome SunShine MonkeyShines to the fairgrounds. Join Mary Lynn and her family of Capuchin Monkeys as the stroll throughout the fairgrounds providing entertainment and organ grinding. SunShine MonkeyShines tries to educate its audiences. Many of their monkeys have been rescued as retired organ grinders or laboratory animals or unsuccessful pets. The organization feels it is their role to provide the safest, secure and enriched environment possible. Companionship is of primary importance, as monkeys are extremely social creatures. Though some of their monkeys have come from

43

abusive situations, still others have arrived after being dearly loved. The fact that monkeys in captivity can live well into their 40’s, yet never mature past toddler hood (by human standards), can present an overwhelming predicament. They provide a safe haven, as well as a network, so that captive primates will have positive, long-term life alternatives.
