Help available to restore wetlands COLUMBUS – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) encourages people and groups wanting to restore and protect critical wetlands to consider enrolling their property into conservation easements. This year, NRCS will invest in technical and financial assistance to help private landowners, tribes and other groups protect these valuable lands. Efforts will be focused on restoring previously drained agricultural lands and protecting the restored wetlands with easements. Landowners are financially compensated for enrolling their land in easements.

“Protecting these lands preserves Ohio’s heritage, natural resources and open space,” said Barbara Baker, NRCS Assistant State Conservationist in Ohio. “Easements are an important tool for people who are trying to preserve the land for future generations.” The Agricultural Conservation Easement Program (ACEP) utilizes the Wetland Reserve Easement (WRE) component of the program. Applications for ACEP-WRE are accepted on a continuous basis. Applications signed and submitted to NRCS by the ranking and funding deadline will be evaluated for fiscal year 2020 funding. The

application deadline for this year is March 27. Through ACEP wetland reserve easements, NRCS helps landowners restore and protect wetland ecosystems. Wetlands are one of nature’s most productive ecosystems providing many ecological, societal and economic benefits. In the 1700s, wetlands covered 5 million acres of Ohio, primarily in the northwestern part of the State, referred to as the “Great Black Swamp.” Competing land uses resulted in a 90 percent loss of wetlands by the late 1900s. Since 2005, NRCS has assisted landowners in restoring more than 25,000 acres of Ohio’s wetlands.

“Wetlands provide many benefits, including critical habitat for a wide array of wildlife species. They also store floodwaters, clean and recharge groundwater, sequester carbon, trap sediment, and filter pollutants for clean water,” said Baker. “Seventy-five percent of the nation’s wetlands are situated on private and tribal lands,” Baker added. Last year, Ohio landowners restored 600 acres of wetlands through ACEP. Landowners can choose either a permanent or 30-year wetland conservation easement. Eligible lands include farmed or converted wetlands that can successfully be

restored, croplands or grasslands subject to flooding, previously restored wetlands, and riparian areas that link protected wetland areas. As part of the easement, NRCS and the landowner work together to develop a plan for the restoration and maintenance of the wetland. Ohio landowners interested in wetland reserve easements and partners interested in agricultural easements should contact their local USDA Service Center. To learn more about ACEP and other technical and financial assistance available through NRCS conservation programs, visit Get Started with NRCS.

Seniors win scholarship contest DARKE COUNTY – Two high school seniors from local county school districts won the first and second place designations for the Joe Fichter Scholarship Essay Contest at the Ohio Farmers Union annual State Convention held in Lima. Ethan Fischer, a senior at Ansonia High School, garnered the first place award and Emily Schmitz, a senior from Mississinawa Valley High School, was awarded the secondplace designation. Ohio Farmers Union honors Joe Fichter, a well-informed and dedicated advocate

for family farms, and his work through yearly scholarships to deserving rural youth. Joe Fichter’s primary work was the preservation of the family farm and its values. He made numerous trips to Washington to lobby for the family farmer and the small towns they supported. Joe was a major part of Ohio’s Farmers Union and helped build the organization throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Fichter was also a professor of English, from 1936 to 1958, at Miami University in Oxford, where he lived.

The Extemporaneous competition consists of the contestant choosing a topic when they arrive, and getting exactly 30 minutes to prepare a speech. They then give their speech and are asked questions about it. Wuebker placed fourth.

Winner recognized for Capstone VERSAILLES – Lewis Winner is a senior at Versailles High School and participates in the Agriculture Education Capstone Program and has been selected as the capstone highlight student of the month. The Versailles Agriculture Education Capstone Program is in its eighth year of existence. Winner is the son of Brian and Lisa Winner of North Star. Capstone is a program that gives Versailles High School junior and senior students that are enrolled in agriculture education an opportunity to gain real world employment experiences and opportunities while in high school. Winner started working at KennFeld Group at their Coldwater location in August 2019. Kenn-Feld Group, LLC is a John Deere Dealer Group with eight locations throughout Northwest Ohio and Northeast Indiana. Their values enable customers to cultivate, shape and manicure the land-

scape through relationships, engagement, and experiences based on trust, integrity and a sense of urgency. Winner is employed and training to become a service technician. His primary responsibilities are in the combine shop of Kenn-Feld. Winner assists with doing full service on combines, rebuilding planters, assisting the fulltime service technicians with service calls during the harvest season, equipment set-up and general shop cleaning and maintenance. His is supervised by Bill McGuire, service manager at Kenn-Feld Coldwater and Mike Lefeld, combine service manager. McGuire said, “Lewis is responsible, timely, engaged, poses solid mechanical skills, pays attention to detail, follows instructions well and is a team player and very conscientious of his work. He added that Lewis is an asset to KennFeld Group, “He is a fine student and appreciates his reliability.”

Since his employment, Winner has started purchasing his own tools and is looking into attending the John Deere Service Technician Program at Owens Community College and becoming a certified John Deere Service Technician in the future. This year, a record 36 students are enrolled in the Versailles Agriculture Education Capstone programs and are leaving school after their daily required courses are complete and working at area businesses. The goal of the spotlight is to highlight each month one of the students that participate in the capstone program and highlight the skills/knowledge they are gaining, the roles/assets they are to their business. The students enrolled in capstone also use their employment as their Supervised Agricultural Experience Program. As part of their grade in capstone, students are required to keep

members followed important steps in accomplishing leadership skills, personal growth and career success. Both the 212 and 360 conferences strive towards developing great leaders and to help students grow in the FFA. The 212 conference is named for the temperature at which water boils. At 211 degrees, water is right on the brink of bubbling up to a boil, but by simply adding one more degree, it gets it to the next level. By using this analogy, this conference focuses on the growth of each individual and pushes them to add more effort to get to that next level, even if it’s just by one small step. This conference accomplished this by incorporating the themes of virtue, growth and collaboration. The 360 conference uses the analogy of a circle. If you’ve ever taken geometry then you should know that 360 degrees creates a circle. This conference encourages students to take a full circle approach

in the development of chapter leadership. Instead of focusing on the individual, this conference aims to develop and advance local chapters as a whole by focusing on every angle that could create action plans for a chapter. The themes that assist in this goal are action and influence. During the 360 conference, leadership sessions were held to implement the themes of this conference. Along with focusing on leadership development, the Bradford members were able to connect to FFA members from other schools. Activities were held to increase teamwork and with that, new friendships. A dance was even held where all the members could mingle and have a blast.

The Bradford members that were present at these events returned with a new vigor. The memories and friends made became a nostalgic recollection, but the lessons and skills they learned over the weekend prepared them to implement these into their very own chapter. The conferences provided the students with the tools, ideas and time to develop action plans for their chapters, communities and personal lives. Now, confidently, they will impact the future of not only their chapter, but the future of the agriculture industry itself. Written by Mercededs Smith, Bradford-UVCC Reporter

BRADFORD – Leadership, according to the Oxford dictionary, is “the action of leading a group of people or an organization.” Even though the definition seems simple, being a leader is not so easy of a task. As a leader, you must be able to inspire others. You must show qualities of honesty, communication, innovation, and much more. Behind every great organization is a set of strong leaders. During the weekend of Jan. 18 and 19, a handful of members of the Bradford-UVCC FFA chapter had the opportunity to attend the 212-360 Conference. These were two different leadership conferences, 212 being for seventh through 10th grade students, and 360 being for 11th and 12th graders. Alexis Barhorst and Molly Clark attended the 212 conference and Jay Roberts attended the 360 conference. By becoming involved in these conferences, Bradford-UVCC FFA
