THE DUTTON EXPERIENCE
Some things you can’t plan for; they just happen. That is the story of the Duttons. Dean Dutton was a professor of economics with a growing family. Dean had always heard that families that work together on farms were the most successful, but that didn’t make sense for them. So he searched out other opportunities and landed on providing his kids with violin lessons. Every child started learning the violin around 3-5 years old. Soon the kids were learning other instruments like the banjo and mandolin. As the kids got older, they enjoyed bluegrass. They also encouraged their parents to start playing as well. Sheila Dutton took her first music lesson at the age of 37. Dean had played guitar in high school, but took on the bass instrument.
8
The Duttons were soon playing as a family at rest homes, community events, and fairs. One thing led to another and they eventually ended up in France at a music festival. Doors continued to open for the Duttons. They got on European tv stations and talk shows. The funny thing is, they weren’t looking for this as the family had other jobs at the time. It soon became apparent that something had to give. Dean took an early retirement, because the Duttons were becoming so popular, and they jumped into the music business full time! As the 7 Dutton kids got older, and this was becoming a career for the family, Sheila Dutton thought they should be located somewhere central in the United States. Judith Dutton said, “A lot of people had told us about Branson and that we should go there.” That happened in 1997. The Duttons started out at the Positive Country Theater, moved to the Barbara
Fairchild Theater, and ended up at the Boxcar Willie Theatre. Boxcar never got to see them perform there, as he passed away the day before they were supposed to open. The Duttons eventually bought the theater from Boxcar’s family. Over the years the Duttons have gained a strong following and have appeared on numerous television shows, including 4 PBS specials, America’s Got Talent, and America’s Most Musical Families. They even have their own show, in its third season, now on RFD-TV. The Dutton Show features a wide variety of musical influences. Its high energy appeals to all ages. You’ll experience everything from country and bluegrass, to classical and pop. You’ll see up to 23 Dutton family members on stage with three generations of performers. The Duttons also have three other shows in their theater, LeRoy New - A Tribute to Marty Robbins and Classic Country Stars, Magic & Comedy of Taylor Reed which is one of Branson’s most enchanting shows, and in the fall, All Hands on Deck, which is a 40s style show. When the Duttons aren’t in Branson, you can also find them in Mesa, Arizona in the winter, or during select tour dates around the country. THE BRANSON SHUFFLE SIX Each year Branson takes part in what has become known as the “Branson Shuffle.” The Branson Shuffle happens when shows change their venue. Some years there may just be a couple of shows that change theatres, but there are times when numerous shows change where they are located and even the days and times that their show is scheduled. You’ll also find several entertainers that change where they perform as well. The shuffle begins around November and can continue until opening day. You just never know where your favorite show or entertainer will end up!

SIX will now be performing at Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Theatre, The Johnson Strings and The Blackwoods will be at the Americana Theatre, Billy Yates Hit Songwriters in the Round will be at Shepherd of the Hills, and Doug Gabriel will be at the Branson Famous Theatre.

GET TO KNOW BRANSON ENTERTAINERS BETTER PlayBranson, the unique new television show that lets guests get to know some of Branson’s top entertainers, sits down with Ellen Petersen of The Petersens and Illusionist REZA.
Ellen Petersen The Petersens at Little Opry Theatre in IMAX How did you get to Branson? My parents are both very musical and we grew up singing. My dad was in the military so we moved around a lot and every two years we’d be stationed at a different base. He wanted to keep our family together and on one family trip, we ended up at a Bluegrass festival. He saw all of the families having such good community together and playing music. He decided that day that we would become a Bluegrass band. He bought me a banjo that day. Later, we came to Branson and there were so many opportunities that came along. We won the Gospel Sing-Off at Sight and Sound Theatre in 2010 and after that was when we were offered a show at The Little Opry Theatre at the IMAX.
Talk about your American Idol Experience. I had just graduated College of the Ozarks. The American Idol bus tour came to the Branson Landing and my friends and I auditioned just for the heck of it. They liked me at The Landing audition and they sent me to Kansas City a month later. There, I made it through the producer rounds and got to perform with celebrity judges. For Hollywood week, my siblings came out tp be with me and they helped me learn all of the choreography. I made it through Hollywood week and then the next round was several months later in Los Angeles. It was such a great experience and I learned a ton from it.
REZA
Talk about your history/background.
14
We perform authentic music, we have clean comedy, and we are all about family values. We love hanging out together! If you love those things, you’ll love my family! Tell us about your family’s show. We are a Bluegrass band, but we do Americana Roots Music. Our family plays music, tells stories, and my brother makes jokes. No two shows are the same! My family is just up on stage hanging out. If we get a request, we love to do it!
If someone has never seen the show, what can they expect?
REZA | Edge of Illusion at Branson Famous Theatre
Branson is where it all started for me. I’m originally from South Dakota, so Branson was just far away enough to make it a special trip. My parents would bring me as a kid to Branson and I would see shows, magic shows especially. I’d go home and create a dream that one day I would be on that stage and things started coming into place. I came back to Branson, the place where all of the memories started, where all of the inspiration began, and now full circle, I’m able to stand on the stage and look at the audiences and see the same situation that I had, a kid being inspired to do something cool. It’s a really special thing for me to be back in Branson.
If you were in an elevator and had 15 seconds to tell someone about the Petersen family, what would you say?
Talk about your performing experience. It’s been a really cool thing for me to be able to take magic from a live audience to a TV screen that goes all over the world. I’ve had several videos on Youtube that have gone viral that have resulted in various TV offers. I’ve had several opportunities that have allowed me to be on a TV series in Japan, and US TV shows such as Duck Dynasty and Penn and Teller Fool Us.
It’s a magic show for someone who loves magic and for someone who hates magic. It’s not just about the magic or the tricks, it’s the whole experience. It’s the involvement with the crowd, the stories that are shared, audience involvement, comedy, and humor. I relate it to a rock concert that meets a magic show. This magic is something different. It’s magic with something people can relate to—helicopters, motorcycles, power tools, spray paint, combined with awesome music, incredible lighting, and video walls.
