ENTERTAINMENT

The Presleys A trip to Branson is about creating memories. As one of the top places for live entertainment in America, Branson is full of variety and has been helping families create lasting memories for more than half a century. The Presleys, who in 1967 opened the first live music show on the world-famous 76 Country Music Blvd, still perform in the same location today. For generations, they have entertained visitors with a one-of-akind mix of bluegrass, country, gospel, and comedy. With new music and new comedy, while still relying on the format people know and love, it is fresh enough to see again and again, year after year. One show that will leave you with great memories and a rhythm in your step is #1 Hits of the 60s at the Clay Cooper Theatre. It is a favorite of both adults and kids who visit Branson. This show is a Branson staple, and by that we mean that it is good, consistent, and open every year. At the same time, it is still fresh every year. With a decade of Top 40 hits to choose from, they mix it up season after season. This show is fast-paced, flashy fun. Perhaps you remember visiting Shepherd of the Hills on a childhood trip to Branson. If so, you may be surprised to learn that it offers much more than just the outdoor drama that began in the 1960s. The Jim Barber Ventriloquist Show, WhoDunnit Murder Mystery, Funny Farm Dinner Feud, and The Chuckwagon Dinner Show are all a part of the 2021 lineup at Shepherd of the Hills. During the Christmas season, one can enjoy A Shepherd’s Christmas Carol Dinner Show and The Santa Claus Caper. You have probably seen Branson’s Famous Baldknobbers, as it was the first live music show in Branson. It opened in Branson 62 years ago and is still going strong. Today, the Baldknobbers show is presented in three different formats: a modern, fast-paced country show; a vintage show, much like the one that was performed in the 1960-70s; and a gospel show.

SIX is a show that creates indelible memories. The Knudsen Brothers began as street performers in LA while in their teens and, today, have the longest-running acapella group in the world—and one of the best! SIX makes for a fun-filled two hours. We know for certain that once you see Illusionist Rick Thomas, you will never forget him. He adapts his award-winning, longrunning Vegas show to the Branson stage, and it is the stuff from which memories are made. This show will leave you full of awe and wonder. You don’t want to miss it! The Duttons represent the best in Branson family entertainment. Their show includes bluegrass, classical, and everything in between. The Duttons are a close-knit family, and, before the show is over, you, too, will feel a part of it. Pierce Arrow’s Decades show is a foot-stomping review of the top hits of the last 70 or so years. Pierce Arrow Country will compel you to sing along. The Hughes Brothers Music Show, the one that most of us grew up watching, features the largest cast in Branson. Their other show called Re-Vibe features a new generation of the Hughes family creating their own memories on stage. Legends in Concert tugs on your heart strings when they remember big names like Elvis, The Blues Brothers, Johnny Cash, and Michael Jackson. World-class magician Dave Hamner and his wife Denise make memories of their own in Branson at Hamners’ Unbelievable Variety Show. You will never forget the birds that appear out of nowhere! Grand Country Music Hall offers a number of memorable shows in their schedule, including Grand Jubilee, Comedy Jamboree, Amazing Pets, and Down Home Country.

#1 Hits of the 60s

Grand Jubilee The Petersens is an authentic Ozarks music show with bluegrass, clean comedy, and a family-friendly experience. Some of this music is as old as the hills, but fresh as a daisy. Nashville Roadhouse Live is a new twist on Branson shows, as it welcomes nationally known guest stars on a regular basis.  REZA: Edge of Illusion is a highly popular young illusionist show. You may have seen Reza on his specials on HBO, A&E, CW, PBS and more. Clay Cooper’s Country Express is a world-class, country music variety show featuring a large cast, great live music, dancing, and comedy. Yes, Branson entertainment truly has something spectacular for everyone to enjoy. From country and pop, to magic and comedy, there are shows that will be sure to please. ❚

THE BRANSON SHUFFLE

Illusionist Rick Thomas: Mansion of Dreams

Each year Branson takes part in what has become known as the “Branson Shuffle.” The Branson Shuffle happens when shows change their venue. Some years there may just be a couple of shows that change theatres, but there are times when numerous shows change where they are located and even the days and times that their show is scheduled. You’ll also find

several entertainers that change where they perform as well. The shuffle begins around November and can continue until opening day. You just never know where your favorite show or entertainer will end up! For the 2021 season, fewer shows have moved locations. The Texas Tenors and Illusionist Rick Thomas: Mansion of Dreams shows have moved to the Mickey Gilley-

GET TO KNOW BRANSON ENTERTAINERS BETTER PlayBranson, the unique new television show that lets guests get to know some of Branson’s top entertainers, sat down with Jackie Brown of Grand Jubilee, Jak Knudsen of SIX, and Megan McCombs Mabe of Branson’s Famous Baldknobbers.

Jackie Brown Grand Jubilee at Grand Country Music Hall Jackie Brown knew that she wanted to be a singer since she was 16 when her family visited Opryland’s Country Music USA in Nashville. She got that chance and had a successful career before coming to Branson. She performed at Opryland, Dollywood, Disney Cruise Lines, and at Country Tonite in Pigeon Forge. Early influences and years of performing on stage has made Jackie into one of the best, polished professional singers in the business. So good is she that Jackie was chosen by Mattel to perform as the human model for their Country Rose Barbie Doll. She even performed at The

Grand Ole Opry as Barbie. When she came to Branson, though, her first job—at Country Tonite—was as a dancer and backup singer. “I have moves,” she told Chris Myer in her PlayBranson interview. She had never trained to be a professional dancer, but she succeeded. She never took voice lessons, either. Jackie’s mother was a music teacher, and she credits her for giving her all the skills and knowledge necessary to get a start in the music industry. Jackie gives credit to Amy Grant, as well, for it was her that Jackie emulated in front of a mirror when she was a teenager, singing into a make-believe microphone. Amy Grant was not the only

Jak Knudsen

SIX at Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Theater Jak Knudsen never sits still; he has too much energy for that. Rarely is he serious, as well. His eyes sparkle when he starts on one of the fantastic yarns that he often spins for laughs. He is as much fun in person as he is on stage. He stopped by PlayBranson recently to discuss SIX, the show in which he and his brothers perform in Branson. For the few of you who may not know, SIX is an acapella show, and one of the most successful shows in Branson. SIX has been called “an orchestra of human voices,” and that is the best description for them. They don’t simply sing without musical accompaniment. They create their own musical accompaniment with their voices. Drums, cymbals, guitars, horns, the audience hears it all. 12

SIX began by singing barbershop in competitions. At the same time, they were playing punk rock concerts. In 1987, the brothers moved to Los Angeles where they performed on the street for loose change. Jak jokes that at the end of the night, they would have earned money for a sandwich split six ways. While performing at a Christmas party, the Knudsen brothers were spotted by Jay Osmond who promptly put them on a TV special. Since then, they have never looked

musical influence on Jackie Brown when she was a teen. She also liked Def Leppard. She admits that she listened to heavy rock, as well as country and contemporary Christian music. In 2008, Jackie got a call from Mike Patrick, producer and emcee at Grand Country Music Hall. He invited her to join the large cast of performers in their many shows. She has been at home there ever since. Jackie can be seen nightly performing country, gospel, and rock hits at the award-winning Grand Jubilee. ❚

back. Their show, at Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Theater, has been a fan favorite for years, and has continually been one of the top shows in Branson. While all the brothers get equal time in the spotlight, it is Jak who is the emcee, which means the show progresses with his interaction with the audience. Truth be told, Jak is just as funny when a joke fails as when it lands. We love his humor, but we love his singing even more. Listen for his version of Art Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Waters. Like everything he does, Jak carries this song to new heights. ❚ To learn more about Jackie and Jak, visit the PlayBranson Youtube page and watch the complete interviews. Megan McCombs Mabe

Branson’s Famous Baldknbbers at Branson Famous Theatre There are many things to like about Branson’s Famous Baldknobbers: the music, the tradition that stretches back for three generations, and the performers. One performer who shines in the show is Megan Mabe. She dropped in to visit with us recently at PlayBranson. Megan McCombs (her maiden name) was raised in Tulip, Iowa, a Dutch community. She performed in church as a child; the first time she sang in public, she performed a solo of Silent Night. She trained vocally while in high school and was fortunate to join a non-traditional music group in college that took her to Paris, London, and Mexico. Iowa, however, offered few opportunities to work full-time in music. She followed her parents when they moved to Branson. In Branson, she found ample opportunities to work as a performer. She first worked for Shoji Tabuchi and a few years later was hired at the Baldknobbers Theater. She told Chris Myer in her interview with PlayBranson that the audition for the Baldknobbers was the worst audition of her life. She waited over two weeks to hear back from the

Baldknobbers and was convinced that she would not get the job, but she did. It was while working for the Baldknobbers that Megan fell in love with her future husband, Brandon Mabe. Brandon is a part of the third generation of the Mabe family to perform for the Baldknobbers. His grandfather Jim and Jim’s brothers founded the Baldknobbers. Jim was known to the public as “Droopy Drawers.” They opened the very first music show in Branson 62 years ago. “Quite an accomplishment,” says Megan. And we agree.

This year, Branson’s Famous Baldknobbers presents three shows: Baldknobbers Country, Baldknobbers Gospel, and Baldknobbers Vintage. Megan tells us that the vintage show is more like the show would have been presented in the 1960-70s. All three shows are fantastic! ❚ To learn more about Megan, visit the PlayBranson Youtube page and watch the complete interview.

Entertainer Clay Cooper Wins Branson Alderman, Ward 1

Branson Famous Theatre RezaLive.com | 417-231-4999

Branson entertainer, Clay Cooper, threw his hat into the recent city Alderman race and won big. Could this be Clay’s start to the White House? Previous entertainers have ended up in the White House, so it is possible. Clay won locally in a land slide with over 63% of the vote. Clay had on his Facebook page the following, “If I am elected, I promise to bring three things to City Hall: Common sense, morals, and open ears. If we listen to each other, and work to accomplish the things that are in the best interest of all in our city, we will see a Branson resurgence we can be proud of.” I know one thing: with Clay Cooper as an Alderman, we might just have some more exciting meetings. Best wishes on Clay Cooper’s new position as Alderman! ❚ 15

BRANSON’S WILD WORLD

Branson’s Wild World may be Branson’s best kept secret! It has a great location: midway down Branson’s 76 strip next to Walmart, but few people know where it is. It sits off the street and to get to it, one enters Walmart’s east driveway and then follows their drive to the left. Branson’s Wild World is an indoor adventure park and aquarium that cares for hundreds of animals. There are over a hundred aquatic animals in dozens of different tanks, including stingrays that swim to you and gathering sharks awaiting food. From Puffer Fish to Parrot Fish, there are enough fish that one could spend their entire visit just learning about them. But Branson’s Wild World is more than just fish. Crocodiles and alligators peer out from the water like they are ready to strike. Snakes, lizards, and spiders crawl throughout their aquariums. The alligators— like most of the animals at this animal adventure park—were rescues. It seems they wandered out of their natural environment and into a populated area. Instead of being returned to the wild where they might create more havoc, it was decided that they were to be killed. Fortunately, the owners of Branson’s Wild World took them in. The alligators—one of which is now over 15 feet long—are relatively docile. One of the zookeepers told me that they are so docile that they are hand-fed and trained to retreat into the water when their food is delivered to them. While I was delighted that many of the animals were behind glass, like the spiders and snakes, there were so many more that I simply wanted to play with or cuddle. The Puma, or American Mountain Lion, for instance, bounded to the glass when it saw me. It rubbed its face against the glass at the spot where I reached out with my hand. Later, it returned to a perch and posed perfectly for a photograph. I wanted to brush the wolves; their winter

coats are falling out. I wondered if they were as tame as they seem. I was told that most of the animals were easily handled and relatively tame because they had been taken care of for so long. Still, they are wild animals, and one should always be wary. No playing with a mountain lion for me. One can play with the dingoes, though. Dingoes are wild canines native to Australia and were domesticated by the Aborigines centuries ago. This wild animal looks more like a dog than a wolf. It has roamed the continent of Australia for perhaps 10,000 years. That’s the kind of stuff one can learn at Branson’s Wild World Animal Adventure Park and Aquarium. Informational signs and videos are available throughout the park for those who want to utilize them. Staff is available throughout the adventure to answer questions. I asked if any of the animals ever returned to the wild. Not often, was the answer. These animals are rescues. Most had been raised in captivity and came to Branson’s Wild World after it was determined that they could not be properly cared for elsewhere. Others have been cared for so long, they don’t know how to fend for themselves. There are lots of other activities at Branson’s Wild World Adventure Park, such as animal feedings and other interactive

adventures, all with proper supervision. There is even the indoor, underwaterthemed Wild Abyss 3-D backlight mini golf course. It is complete with larger than life sea creatures, awesome artwork, and real fish displays. Wolf Woods, the region’s first indoor wolf display, and the Lemur Playground are big hits with visitors also. Plus, opening in June 2021, Wild World is adding new outdoor exhibits, which will include lions, tigers, foxes, kangaroos, jackals, and many other new animals. The zoo will double in size, but the price will stay the same! Branson’s Wild World Adventure Park is open from 10am to 6pm daily, and it is all indoors. Adult tickets begin at $18.95, and children’s tickets (under 12) begin at $11.95. Children under 2 are free. Find their ad on pages 26-27! ❚

In the last 5 years there has been a significant trend in the way families are choosing to vacation. The terms VRBO, Airbnb and nightly rental have become household names to many avid travelers. Although people have been renting condos for years, there is a new kind of lodging experience in the Branson area with the construction of large nightly rental houses. Joe and Karla Bell purchased their first lodge 4 years ago. Joe says, “even though we knew this was a good investment we still wondered if people would come and stay.

Karla and I are thrilled to say that the answer is, definitely yes and they come back again, too.” Joe and Karla own Bell Haven @ Chateau Cove, a 7 bedroom, 7 bath, Magnolia inspired, lake front lodge, featuring a large kitchen, 2 living area and lots of outdoor space including a fire pit. It is located on the north side of Table Rock Dam just next to Chateau On The Lake. The ability to buy your own groceries with a fully equipped kitchen and only eat out when you want is a huge benefit to guests. Bell Haven @ Chateau Cove even has an option for Private Chef Service available. Whether it is sitting in the dining room with friends, sending the kids to one of the multiple pools or simply having a conversation around the fire pit, staying at Bell Haven Lodge is about creating memories that will last a lifetime with the people you love. If you would like to experience Bell Haven @ Chateau Cove go to airbnb.com/ rooms/43374132 or email TheBellHaven@ gmail.com.
