A LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Welcome to the 3rd issue of The Dish magazine. We couldn’t have done it without you, our readers. Thanks for your continued support. Part of vacationing and living in Ozark Mountain Country is about the new dining experiences you can have. There are over 200 restaurants in the Branson area just waiting for you to discover. Our vision is to be a useful tool to help you experience a variety of Branson’s dining options. We’ve heard some pretty good rumors about a few new restaurants in the works in the Branson area. Our goal with this publication has been to provide menu samples and highlights. In the past we also featured articles on our local restaurant owners. This year we changed the articles and highlighted themed restaurants, Mel’s Hard Luck Diner’s singing servers, what’s new at Famous Dave’s BBQ, and the Fogle’s plethora of Branson’s Best Restaurants. I love getting to learn about their stories and experiences. I’ve had locals tell me how much they enjoy the magazine. It’s also been fun to see visitors reading the magazine in their cars or other places. I always wish I had a camera at that moment so I could show our advertisers that “yes” the magazine is being viewed. If this magazine helps make a decision for you, could you tell the restaurant you saw their information in “The Dish” and it was influential? We’d appreciate it. What makes this diner unique is the fact that all of the servers sing! Not only will you be served delicious food, but you will have the chance to hear a variety of styles of music performed by numerous talented singers. We had the opportunity to sit down with a few of the singing servers at Mel’s and hear how their performing journey began. Bernie Parquette From: Minnesota Bernie has lived in Branson for 22 years. One week after she moved to Branson, she walked into Mel’s to apply and was hired. She’s been with the diner now for over 20 years. Bernie sang in churches, performed with a small music group, and had a traveling music ministry that performed all over the country. In fact, she would take her co-workers, Stephanie, Matt, and Jimmy along with her to help sing! Jimmy Evitts From: Illinois Jimmy began performing at the diner during the summer of 1999. His parents were influential in his move to Branson and he has been here for 19 years. He’s had the opportunity to perform on cruise ships and has even performed in 4 different shows in town. A few of his favorite artists include: Sting, Michael Buble, Tina Turner, Barry Manilow, and Eva Cassidy. Stephanie Diaz From: Illinois Stephanie has been working as a singing server at Mel’s for 16 years. Her career began as a public-school music teacher before moving to Branson to pursue a career in performing. She became the director for her choir at church, performed in 4 shows in

Branson, and began working part-time at Mel’s before accepting a full-time position. When not working, she enjoys spending time at the lake. Matt Kester From: Arkansas Matt is no stranger to performing. He was a contestant on American Idol the year that Carrie Underwood won. He has also performed in the Shoji Tabuchi show and has been performing at Mel’s for 20 years. His favorite artists include: Casting Crowns, Def Leopard, Mercy Me, and Adele. His favorite part of working at Mel’s is being able to reach people with different songs. Kelly Bryant From: Texas Kelly has been a singer at Mel’s for about eight years. Kelly was brought to Branson by Branson legend, Chisai Childs. She was also a part of the Texas Goldminors. Kelly’s husband, Jeff, and daughter, Kaitlyn, also work at Mel’s. Jeff is more of the restaurant’s comedian while Kaitlyn works as a hostess and hopes to be a singing server soon. She says it is wonderful to have the opportunity to work with her family. Jaci Rae From: Missouri Jaci began performing with her band, Bitter Honey. Her friend had told her about a position at Mel’s and it wasn’t long before she was hired. Since singing is what she loves to do and with her family living nearby, it was an easy decision to move to Branson. A few of her favorite artists include: Martina McBride, Miranda Lambert, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, and Lady Antebellum. When not working, she enjoys camping, fishing, and spending time outdoors. Nicholaus Foree From: Alaska Nicholaus began his performing career at McDonald’s as he would sing while flipping
burgers. Little did he know that he could actually make a living working in a restaurant singing! A friend had mentioned that there was a position at a restaurant in Branson, Missouri where he could sing while working and get paid. He didn’t think twice. He moved to Branson and has been at Mel’s for 4 years. All of the singing servers at Mel’s have one thing in common and that’s a great relationship that they have established with each other and their owner, Mel. It’s like one big family. They shared that the owners truly care about each of them. Many of the singing servers have families and the diner provides them with a flexible schedule so they don’t have to miss out on important events. One server mentioned that she hasn’t missed out on one of her kid’s field trips because of that. Some of their families also live outside of Branson, so working at Mel’s gives them the opportunity to visit often, which is special. While these performers may not be singing in a theatre, they are still some of most talented vocalists around and have the chance to sing to hundreds of people each day. As one server put it, “The guests that come to the diner are the same people that fill the seats of the theatres. We still have the opportunity to get to perform for them.”The singing servers enjoy being able to brighten each guests’ day as well as having some fun with each other. You might just catch them trying to make each other laugh on occasion during the other singing server’s song! Each of the singing servers have a great time and this will be evident from the moment that you walk in the door! From delicious food to incredible service and outstanding singing, you will definitely want to make sure to visit Mel’s Hard Luck Diner!

The rise of Fogle Enterprises has been a journey over the past 25 years. From owning and operating a single restaurant in a local hotel, to now owning and operating six unique restaurants. This journey has been paved with hard work, perseverance and a creative vision to ensure a memorable dining experience. Fogle Enterprises’ first venture into themed restaurants started when owners Nolan and Babette Fogle transformed their Peppercorns Restaurant into The Great American Steak and Chicken House. As you enter this restaurant, you are greeted by Mr. Peck, the 43 foot rooster that sits out front, welcoming Branson guests. As business increased, the Fogles realized that there was a niche in Branson for themed restaurants. In 2006, Fall Creek Steakhouse was destroyed in a fire and the Fogles were presented with an opportunity to purchase the space and restore it to a successful dining destination. Since reopening in 2008, Fall Creek Steak and Catfish House is known nationally as the ‘Home of the Tossed Rolls’. As you enjoy your meal, you will also be tossed all the fresh rolls that you can eat! As you immediately notice as you walk through the front doors, the walls are filled with antiques that the Fogles have collected from all over the country. Fall Creek Steak and Catfish House not only offers delicious food, it is also an antique lover’s paradise. A few years later, the Fogles purchased The Plantation Restaurant that sat directly across from White Water on Highway 76. After a few

years of running this restaurant, they decided that they wanted to try their hand in purchasing a franchised restaurant. Once again, the Fogles took a risk by tearing down The Plantation, purchased the Pizza Hut next door and tore that down as well, and on those two lots, Nolan and Babette constructed the world’s largest Cicis Pizza. In addition to the 8,000 square foot dining room that features a wide variety of pizzas, pastas, desserts and a full salad bar, there is also the Family Fun Center; a 5,000 square foot, $500,000 game room that boasts over 60 state of the art video games that are sure to entertain the entire family. If you are wondering where Cicis is located, just look for the huge slice of pizza on the front side of the building. Burger Shack was next on the list of restaurants added to the Fogle line up. Burger Shack features cooked to order burgers, fresh cut fries, and hand dipped milkshakes. With the great food and the unique coastal theme, Burger Shack has a following unlike any other burger joint around. In 2015, Pasghetti’s opened on Highway 76, across from the Clay Cooper Theater. This project was the Fogles biggest yet, with an estimated price tag of 6 million dollars. Pasghetti’s seats over 400 guests at once, spread amongst seven dining rooms. You’ll
feel like you’re in 1930’s New York as you dine under string lights that stretch from adjacent apartment buildings. To top it off, they even have a Ferris wheel located inside on the second floor for families to ride. You cannot miss where Pasghetti’s sits; just look for the giant fork and meatball out front. The word successful is an understatement when describing what Nolan and Babette Fogle have done in the restaurant business in Branson. Whether they turn existing restaurants around or start from scratch, the Fogles absolutely know the secret recipe to being successful. They ensure that each and every Branson guest has the opportunity to have a dining experience that they can only get in Branson, and with their amazing and unique selection of dining choices, each visitor can do just that.

Another big story from Famous Dave’s BBQ is that the company hired Travis Clark as their National Pitmaster. Dave Jones said, “We are excited to welcome Travis Clark in his new role as National Pitmaster. Travis will work closely with the team and our award-winning founder ‘Famous Dave Anderson’ to continue to bring innovation and excellence to our menu. No one has won more BBQ awards than Travis in the past four years from the Kansas City BBQ Society, the world’s largest organization of barbecue and grilling enthusiasts.” The American Royal Association has named the company’s founder, ‘Famous Dave’ Anderson, to its newest class of inductees to the Barbecue Hall of Fame, and that’s a big deal. Each year, three individuals are awarded the prestigious honor and are recognized by the Barbecue Hall of Fame for their significant contributions to the barbecue community and demonstration of achievement in barbecue excellence.
