Free Things to Do When you’re looking for something out of the ordinary to do in Branson, there are a few places you need to check out. The best part about them: they’re completely free!
Downtown Branson The Branson Centennial Museum in downtown Branson is a free museum. See the history of the Ozarks and the Branson area. You’ll be fascinated with the history of Branson, its entertainers, and people. It is located on south Commercial Street. Be sure to visit Dick's 5 and 10 in old downtown Branson. It’s free to walk in and browse, but you might just find something you can’t live without! Take a walk along Lake Taneycomo at Branson Landing. Catch the fountain show in the town square of Branson Landing with the first ever merging of water, lights, fire and music. Shows run every hour at the top of the hour from noon until 10pm.
Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery The Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery is the largest trout-rearing facility operated by the Missouri Department of Conservation. It is located below Table Rock Dam. The hatchery produces between 350,000 and 400,000 pounds of trout each year. Both rainbow and brown trout are raised at the hatchery with 80 percent of production going into Lake Taneycomo. The hatchery includes a free conservation center, where the guests can learn more about trout culture, aquatic life, fishing and the Missouri Department of Conservation’s role in aquatic resource management. Guests can even feed the trout on their visit to the hatchery.
Dewey Short Visitor Center Dewey Short Visitor Center near Table Rock Dam provides guests with unique exhibits, including a state-of-the-art interactive map of Table Rock Lake, beautiful artistic wall murals, and a replica of an Ozarks bluff complete with local flora and fauna. A Native American artifact exhibit and Ozarks dioramas are fascinating features of the interpretive center. An interactive water safety exhibit demonstrates the importance of wearing a life jacket, and an expansive cut-away model reveals the inner workings of a hydroelectric dam. The fascinating history of the Corps of Engineers rounds out the exhibits. Guests can also walk or jog along the connecting trails while taking in the beautiful views of the Table Rock Lake on the Table Rock Lakeshore Trail. This trail is paved and easy to walk.
College of the Ozarks This college isn’t like other colleges you may have seen. There are some really unique free experiences here. The Gaetz Tractor Museum features a variety of antique tractors and farm equipment. Watch students grind whole-grain meal and flour at Edwards Mill. Tour the Fruitcake and Jelly Kitchen which has been producing the world famous fruitcakes for over 85 years. Be sure to visit the Patriots Park while you are there.

Ruth and Paul Henning Conservation Area The Henning Conservation Area offers spectacular views of the countryside from the lookout and observation tower. Guests are invited to take a stroll on the self-guided nature trail. Many of the trees are labeled to help with identification and the naturalist on duty will even answer questions you might have. The Henning Conservation Area is located on 1,530 acres of scenic Ozark backcountry and provides guests with the opportunity to explore on paved trails and natural surfaces. There are benches scattered throughout the park in strategic shady areas on the inclines where hikers can rest.

Lakeside Forest Wilderness Area Located at the corner of W 76 Country Blvd and Fall Creek Rd, and across from Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Theater, the Lakeside Forest Wilderness Area is where you can discover the old Owen homestead, cave, and numerous trails overlooking Lake Taneycomo.

Golfing GolfWeek gave Branson golf courses 5 of the top 7 courses you can play in Missouri in 2021. Golf Digest also gave America’s Best New Course recognition to area golf courses in both 2021 and 2019. Lakeside Forest Wilderness Area
If you like to hike, Branson offers miles of hiking trails in the great Ozark Mountains. We’ve highlighted a few trails in the Branson area that are easy to access. The Ruth and Paul Henning Conservation Area, located 0.6 miles north of the Butterfly Palace, features five trails on over 1500 acres. There is the difficult, 3.4-mile Homesteader’s Trail or the 0.4-mile long asphalt Dewy Bald Trail, which leads from the parking lot to a 40-foot viewing tower atop Dewey Bald. The tower provides an excellent view of the scenic White River Hills and Branson entertainment. The area is designated as an important bird area by Audubon Missouri. The 2.25-mile hiking and biking Table Rock Lakeshore Trail offers guests a gorgeous walk from the Dewey Short Visitor Center, to the Showboat Branson Belle area along the edge of Table Rock lake. The White River Trail System (hiking and biking) is near here and consists of over 11 miles of trails and four distinct loops for you to traverse. The Lakeside Forest Wilderness is located just south of Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Theater and offers the opportunity to explore over 130
acres of wooded and rugged Ozark hills on 5.3 miles of trails. Visitors can enjoy this unique park with its two woodland trails that wind through forest, along bluffs, and across glades. The trail system also offers views of an old homestead and barn, and beautiful views of Lake Taneycomo. A set of 315 stone steps lead down toward Lake Taneycomo along a path that features a waterfall and cave. The Waterfall Trail follows an unnamed tributary of Roark Creek and includes some beautiful rock formations, a waterfall, and a dense tree canopy for a .7-mile hike. The trail is rugged with 2 creek crossings and can be impassable after a heavy rain. The trail is located at Roark Valley Road and Shepherd of the Hills Expressway, near the entrance of the Branson Woods Resort at 851 Roark Valley Drive. Just a short 20-minute drive north of Branson, the Busiek State Park offers 18 miles of wide and well-marked trails. This area features bird watching, wildlife, lush streams, and beautiful views of the Ozark valleys. There are even trails at Shepherd of the Hills fish hatchery with 4 trails in length from 0.4 to 1.6 miles.

Outdoors Outdoor activities abound in the Branson area and are one of the many reasons why Branson is the great family friendly destination that it is. Many of the outdoor activities mentioned here will provide an opportunity to enjoy the wonders of God’s creation.
Four Wheeling Discover the Ozarks by touring in a side-by-side UTV on guided trail rides. Check out Hog Wild Adventures located just south of Branson. If you are looking for something fun and unique, this is a blast!
Caves Let’s go caving, or more properly known as spelunking! Talking Rocks Cavern is the most convenient cave located in Branson West. In addition, there is Silver Dollar City’s Marvel Cave, Cosmic Caverns found between Branson and Eureka Springs, and Mystic Caverns located just south of Harrison, Arkansas. Drive a golf cart through Lost Canyon Cave, just south of Branson at Top of the Rock.
Ziplines Fly through the trees and catch an adrenaline rush on a number of ziplines around town. Shepherd of the Hills Adventure Park has added a new zipline course to its existing Vigilante Extreme Ziprider. There are 5 other zipline experiences available around the Branson area. Have fun flying through the Ozark Mountains.
Talking Rocks Cavern
Conservation Area, which features 5 trails on 1,534 acres, all ranging from .3 to 3.4 miles. The 2.2 mile Table Rock Lakeshore Trail is a pleasant walk from the Dewey Short Visitor Center to the Showboat Branson Belle area. Many other trail areas exist in the Ozarks.
Nature Park Discover one of the best nature parks in the country located just south of Branson at Dogwood Canyon, which features thousands of recreational acres. Take a tram tour, fly fish, bike ride or just stroll the trails of Dogwood Canyon. You will be amazed by this outdoor paradise, developed by Bass Pro’s Johnny Morris.

Lakes in the Ozark Mountains Table Rock Lake Table Rock Lake, spreading across Southwest Missouri and Northwest Arkansas, offers some of the world’s best bass fishing, several commercial marinas, and over 850 miles of shoreline. When it was completed, Table Rock Dam was a marvel. The dam itself is nearly 6500 feet long and stands over 250 feet above the stream beneath it. Be sure to visit it and the Dewey Short Visitor Center right by the dam.
Lake Taneycomo Since completion of the Table Rock Dam, the headwaters of Lake Taneycomo that pour from the bottom of Table Rock Lake, make Taneycomo a cold-water lake, perfect for trout fishing. In fact, the lake is stocked with nearly 400,000 ten to twelve inch trout each year. Visit the Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery at the base of Table Rock Dam.
Bull Shoals Lake Built downstream from the Powersite Dam in 1952, Bull Shoals Lake offers pristine views, mile after mile of undeveloped shoreline, clear waters (perfect for scuba diving), and amazing bass and walleye fishing. The Bassmaster Elite Tournament and the White River Electric Cooperative Fishing Tournament are just a couple of tournaments to frequent Bull Shoals.
Lake Taneycomo
Activities Visitors to Branson and the Tri-Lakes area can swim, water ski, kayak, jet ski, jet board, float, boat, sail, or scuba dive. Of course, some folks just want to fish. Several commercial marinas on the lakes offer rentals of jet skis, pontoons, ski boats, fishing boats, and scuba equipment. The Corps of Engineers has developed public swimming areas on the lakes, including the ever popular Moonshine Beach, near the Table Rock Dam. Table Rock State Park offers launch sites, a marina, picnic areas, and a swimming area.
Visitors Center The Dewey Short Visitors Center is considered the gem of Table Rock Lake. Located at the Table Rock Dam, the center is part museum and part information station. This architectural beauty sits next to Table Rock Dam and is a favorite stop for kids.

A History of Myer Hotels Based in Branson, Missouri, Myer Hospitality is one of America’s success stories. Carroll and Janice Myer, founders of Myer Hotels, began a hotel career in 1967 when they purchased their first motel in O’Neill, Nebraska after getting out of the farming business. In 1972, Carroll and Janice bought their first property in Branson, the Branson Motor Court. The Myer family continued to develop in the motel business with a move to Rolla, Mo and then to Julesburg, Colorado where they owned a Best Western. Drawn back to the Ozarks, they moved to Harrison, Arkansas in 1976. They purchased a 100-unit Ramada Inn in Harrison, Arkansas. With a commitment to quality, cleanliness and overall excellence, in 1978 the Myer’s Ramada was named the best Ramada Inn in the country. The family owned the property for 12 years, during which time numerous stars visited, including the King of Rock-N-Roll himself, Elvis Presley. Carroll and Janice Myer were helped by their three sons who grew up learning the lodging business. Other hotels were purchased in Arkansas. Despite their success, something continued to pull the family toward Branson. In the early 80s, Carroll and Janice purchased the Best Western Knights Inn (currently the Best Western Center Pointe Inn) in Branson. One of their sons, Gail, and his wife, MaryAnn, became the managers. The Myer family added over 70 new rooms, an indoor pool, sauna, hot tub, exercise room, and game room. With Branson developing into a top tourism destination, the Myer family committed to the unique town. All their hotels in Arkansas were sold and in the 1990s, the family built a new Comfort Inn

overlooking the 14th hole of the Thousand Hills Golf Course and then built the Best Western Music Capital Inn across from the Shoji Tabuchi Theatre followed by the purchase of what is today the Quality Inn West. In 2001, the Myer family opened the Comfort Inn & Suites Branson Meadows. The development marked the first hotel construction in Branson since the mid-90s. The hotel offers guests a beautiful mountain lodge theme and an amazing million-dollar view of the Ozarks area. In fact, this hotel has become one of the most awarded Comfort Inns in the brand. In Dec. 2009, the Myer family completed acquisition of the Holiday Inn Express on Green Mountain Drive in Branson and made several enhancements. While operating six hotels currently, focus is on continual improvement within those properties. Today, Carroll and Janice Myer focus on special projects while two of their sons and daughter-in-laws oversee daily operations: Gail is the Vice President of Operations and Chris is the Vice President of Marketing. Myer Hotels Mission Statement is “Friendly, Fantastic Service Always”. The hotel company has earned over 100 national awards over the years.
