In my experience owning a small business is so much more than just the work of a company. It is the vision and grit within the organization that is the real measure to compare. Vision and grit set the pace and purpose of a small business in all the ways that truly matter. The small business experience is similar to a marathon but one that comes with little formal training. Of course, there are plenty of business books, courses, and resources available to the ambitious dreamer (AKA the entrepreneur) just as there are many books, fitness classes, and training about marathon running. After it all though there is no way to replace the experience of running the race. Myers Marketing Management and We Are Sand Springs' team is gratefully celebrating 6 years of business this month. We have our vision focused on bettering our surroundings in all that we do. The state of the advertising and marketing industry has changed drastically over the past 6-10 years and our team has welcomed the challenges and victories that have come with those changes. Needless to say, we are quite gritty around here.... In the past six years we have worked with small business owners all over the country to improve their messaging. Here is what I KNOW.. Small Business owners are a perfect mixture of kindhearted and ambitious. We love Sand Springs and the small business owners and leaders that are in this great community. I encourage you as we grow (because right now Sand Springs IS growing) be sure to show some love to the local business. Thank you Sand Springs for the past 6 years and the next! PS. BIG ANNOUNCEMENT COMING SOON >STAY TUNED<

Winter Road Trip Checklist Take your car in for a winter tuneup. Have your mechanic check: Heater, Lights, Brakes, Cabin Air Filter, Defroster, Oil Levels, Exhaust System, and All Fluids. Be sure the condition of your tires are good enough for your planned route. If they are not, check out some winter tires to replace your all weather tires. Also, check out your windshield wipers. Worn out wipers will smear ice on your windshield rather than clean it off. Check your luggage rack (if you have one). Be sure it is tightly secured, you don't want your luggage on the side of the road. Check with your insurance company to make sure you have roadside assistance. If you don't, talk with your insurance provider or purchase roadside assistance separately.

SPOTLIGHT As we enter the winter season, the school year is just reaching its midpoint. As the Sandites are winding up for finals and eventually winter break, the students in Sand Springs Public Schools are shining in their academics and extracurricular endeavors. One such student, and our senior in the spotlight this issue, is Morgan Schlehuber. Morgan has been attending Sand Springs Public Schools all her life, beginning at Angus Valley, and now wrapping up at Charles Page High School. Throughout her education she remembers a few special teachers that helped her along the way. Schlehuber remembers Mr. Price as one of her favorite teachers. “I had him my sophomore year, and now this year in AP Bio.” Additionally, Mrs. Flood and Ms. Miller, both english teachers throughout her journey in the Sand Springs Public Schools. While english is one of Morgan’s interests, her real passion lies in the sciences. She is looking to enter into biology or kinesiology in college, mainly so she can continue on to her dream of becoming a physical or occupational
therapist for people with special needs. Schlehuber is extremely involved in many different extracurricular activities, the first of which is Student Council. She began her involvement with Student Council in 8th grade. She recalls, at that point Student Council wasn’t a class, but rather a club that took place outside school hours. Then in 9th grade it changed to a classroom setting, with every year increasing in complexity and responsibility. Morgan states, “it’s cool, not to be in charge of things, but to be a voice for your school.” While many students in Student Council take on projects throughout the year, Morgan is closely involved with the Horizons Club. The Horizons Club is tied with Student Council and National Honors Society, and Morgan is the Chairperson. About once a month the Horizons Club meets up with the special ed class and have special activities to get everyone involved. Additionally, Morgan is involved with the National Honors Society, and for her Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years has been in the top 10 of her class.

Sand Springs' own, Morgan Schlehuber Schlehuber is accomplishing concurrent enrollment her senior year and will enter college just short of a Sophomore. At this point, Morgan has applied to several colleges; Oklahoma University, Oklahoma State University, University of Central Oklahoma, and the University of Arkansas. While she is waiting to hear back from a few, she recently received her letter of acceptance to Oklahoma State University. When we asked her if she was going to attend, she stated, “I haven’t decided where I’m going to go for sure.” Regardless of where she attends, she plans on rushing a sorority when she gets there. One question we always ask our Seniors in the Spotlight is what piece of advice would you give to the Sandites coming up behind you? Morgan simply encourages students to be involved. “Looking back I’m just really glad I was involved with sports and other stuff… You don’t want to look back on High School and think, ‘wow, I really didn’t do a lot.’ Me and my
friends have all had really good experiences because we’ve been involved.” Morgan would like to take the opportunity to thank her parents, counselors, Kelly Smith, Mrs. Spears, Mr. Cooper, and all of her teachers. “I think a lot of times teachers don’t get recognized, but there isn’t one teacher that I had that didn’t help me in some way.” Morgan also wanted to give a special shout out to Make Promises Happen. Make Promises Happen is an outdoor adventure camp for people with special needs. She was first introduced by her mother (who happens to be the special education teacher at Charles Page High School). For information regarding donations or volunteering, check out www.centralchristiancamp.org. Morgan wants to encourage everyone to at least volunteer once!

New to the Scene: Okie Spice and Co.
Our store has finally opened in Sand Springs and is stuffed to the brim with spices, seasonings, rubs and sauces, Made in Oklahoma items, outstanding olive oils, and fun gift ideas......(not to mention the cheese/ smoked sausage!!). OkieSpice and Trade Co has been in the works for almost a year, and we are thrilled that it's finally coming to pass! After a lot of late nights and long days we can honestly say this is the hardest thing we have ever done for fun! Our intention was to create a cute little spice store with all the things we love to cook and create with.......and it grew from there. As
we started working the ideas and building our stock we realized we had to include more of our favorite things. We love Made in Oklahoma products and have been collecting them on our travels and little road trips the past 7 years. (Give us a free weekend or a festival to attend and we are gone! Even a Sunday afternoon may turn into a short road trip somewhere......always with a picnic basket in tow......filled with smoked cheese/sausage/ pickles (and possibly a bottle of wine......!). "Put a little gravel in our travel"...as the song says! Through those trips we have stumbled upon some neat little stores and lamented
the fact that Sand Springs had none that carried the interesting products we found on our travels. Initially the idea of opening a store seemed a far fetched and out of our reach but with a lot of encouragement ( thank you Lisa Miller!) we began the journey. OkieSpice and Trade Co is now an official Made in Oklahoma retail store and has a large variety of MIO products. We also have some great rubs and seasonings and we can mix your own private blend with our bulk selection of spices. If you have a must-have item, let us know and we will do our best .to carry it in the store. If you are serious about smoking meats, let us know what we need to have in stock for you.....our goal is to meet your needs. Well that, and to have a good time doing it! OkieSpice and Trade Co was a fun idea a year ago, and as we begin the next phase it can only get better!

Where are they now? “People do what they want to do.” This is the motto that local Sandite Janet Rutland takes to heart and lives by. This Sand Springs graduate knows that if your desire is sincere, you will find a way; making excuses is a waste of time for those such as Janet. This is evidenced by her lengthy career and dizzying resume, but at the heart of it all, is a passion for all things local. Janet graduated from Charles Page High School in 1975; prior to her time at Charles Page she attended Central Elementary, Limestone, Central Junior High, and Clyde Boyd Junior High (the first year it opened). As a veteran Sandite, she thoroughly enjoyed Choir and Student Council during her early schooling years. As Janet thinks back to her years in Sand Springs Public Schools, she remembers one of her favorite teachers, Mrs. Anna Rout in 1st grade. Her husband, Ray Rout was the principal at Limestone Elementary and eventually became her science teacher at Clyde Boyd Junior High. She recalls, “they were both dedicated to children, and it showed.” Later she attributes Lora Crainshaw, her choir teacher, with inspiring her love for choir and theatre. “She was a turning point for me. I found my voice and haven’t stopped singing since.” After she graduated from Charles Page, she continued her education at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater for 2 years. After those two years she took a job as a singer in a traveling band. She compares

Very little time is spent on stage and I learned after a year that I’d rather enjoy the comforts of home. I’ve been fortunate to continue the joy of performing while living a very blessed life in Sand Springs.” After returning to Oklahoma, she married Shelby Eicher, raised 3 sons in Sand Springs, and continues her passion in performing vintage jazz, pop, and country music. Her accomplishments include producing 13 cabaret shows for

There are some things that the years have filtered out. Eight-track tapes, water beds, and members only jackets were subject to time, and unfortunately are gone. But sometimes, fads make a comeback, acid wash jeans, parachute pants, and the rubick's cube. Luckily for Sand Springs residents, something else is coming back, and it's not shiny pants. Lee's Diner was a cornerstone of Sand Springs for many years, but unfortunately it closed. It is now back as Lee's Charburgers, and in the back of a truck no less. While the full menu isn't back, the heart and recipes are back in full force with the help of another local cornerstone, Church That Matters.

Your Fur Babies Have Allergies Too... It’s that time of year again – snow, cold, and of course, allergies. Many people are aware that their pets can experience allergies, but the symptoms that your pet experience can be very different from those of people. The most common symptom seen with an allergic pet is itchy skin. This can manifest as obvious scratching of the body, but allergic pets may also lick their feet frequently, rub their faces, shake their heads, and have recurrent skin and ear infections. This is because pets process allergens (things in the environment that cause allergies) in a different way than people. Pets often absorb allergens through the skin, causing itching, redness, and inflammation, but they can also experience sneezing and watery eyes. The symptoms of allergies may be obvious, but the causes of allergies are harder to determine. There are literally thousands of things in your pets surroundings that can cause allergies.. These include trees, grasses, molds, and pollens, but could also be an ingredient in your pets food. One important question is: Does your pet itch year-round, or only at certain times? If your pet itches year-round, a food allergy may be the culprit. This means that your pet could be allergic to one of the ingredients in their food. While common in people, food allergies account for only about 15% in pets. This means that the “grain free” and “all natural” diets that are heavily advertised may not be of much help. The only way to treat a food allergy is with a very specific, specially manufactured diet. Also, no other food – including treats or table food – can be fed or the pet will still experience symptoms. For the seasonally affected, there are many treatments available. These include antihistamines, shampoos, fattyacid supplements, oral anti-inflammatory medication, and even allergy testing. A consultation with your veterinarian is the first step in maintaining your pets comfort and relief from allergy symptoms.
