Summers always seem to be full of business planning and travel for us so as we welcome cooler temperatures and a structured schedule I can’t help but feel relief. Fall always welcomes this feeling of rest and routine and, for most of us, after the crazy days of summer it is just what we need. My family does a few things when welcoming this season of rest. I thought I would share with you a few of the things that we do as a family. Fall’tastic Preparations: Backyard sitting: The weather in Oklahoma is amazing during the fall months. We spend a morning spraying down the house/ porches and breaking out the outdoor furniture cushions. Citronella candles are a must because both morning coffee and dinner are to be had outside! Pumpkin Patch: We start early. Putting out our Fall/Thanksgiving/ Pumpkin wreaths and yard decor. There is something about having a porch and yard with orange accents that screams home! (Go Pokes!) Purge: During the fall we purge old clothes and kid toys. This process takes some time but life just seem lighter without the clutter. Schedule what matters: Each fall we sit down and plan out family game nights, friend nights, and trips. Usually, we squeeze them in between the kid’s events and business commitments. Having that time scheduled gives us time to look forward to as a family and guarantees that we spend our time together. Those are just a few things we do as a family to welcome fall! I would love to hear what your family does to prepare for Fall. Email me at dmyers@wearesandsprings.com and we can share in our fall’stivities! Go Sandites!

Back to School Car Care Lights - If you have a teenager, now is a great time to get them involved in the process of preventative maintenance. Have them help check the headlights, turn signals, emergency flashing lights, and brake lights. This is a simple way to be sure your kids are aware of the responsibilities of driving a vehicle.
Leaking Fluid - If your car is leaking fluid, check the color to help determine what it is. Red indicates power steering fluid. Orange could mean rust in your radiator or transmission fluid depending on its age. Green is most likely antifreeze, and blue is probably windshield wiper fluid.
Fluid Levels - Engine oil, coolant, transmission, brake, Tires - Check your tires for uneven tread wear, nails or and power steering fluid are usually low after a summer of other potential hazards. This is another great opportunity full use. Be sure to check these levels or have a professional to get your kids involved in the process. check them and top them off.

SPOTLIGHT It’s September and we are just getting back into the school swing of things. As we get settled into our routines, Sandites begin to shine again in their academics, as well as extracurriculars. Savannah Dewitt is one such Sandite. Dewitt has lived her entire life in Sand Springs, as well as her father Troy and her mother grew up in Mannford. She attended Lake Country Christian School and transitioned into the 6th grade center. She states, “It was… yeah… a big shock. It took a little getting used to but I really liked the change.”
focuses on community service, while Student Council’s focus is on the school. Dewitt is heavily involved in both and makes the activities a priority in her social life as well. Dewitt’s community service involvement is with Make Promises Happen, a program of Central Christian Camp that provides outdoor recreational opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Events take place throughout the year and allow the campers to participate in fishing, boating, swimming, archery and other outdoor activities on the 40-acre camp. “We spend the weekend doing… paddle board… arts and crafts... and outside stuff with them,” states Dewitt. She has been volunteering with Make Promises Happen for three years now and shows no signs of stopping.
"I just want to make my mark on the school."
At the 6th grade center Dewitt played basketball until her freshman year. Savannah eventually got involved with StuCo her freshman year and has been involved ever since. She is now the Student Body President and serving as the chairman for StuCo’s Horizons Committee. Savannah states, “The Horizons program is really involved with the special education program at our school.” In addition to her involvement in StuCo, Dewitt is the Vice President of National Honors Society (NHS). When we asked Savannah if any teachers stuck with her, she immediately remembers Mrs. Herje. Mrs. Herje is the Director at Lake Country Christian School, additionally she teaches Primary class, which includes Kindergarten

Sand Springs' own, Savannah Dewitt through 5th grades. Savannah states, “She is awesome, she definitely had an impact on me. Very inspiring and an awesome teacher.” Savannah still keeps in touch with Mrs. Herje, Dewitt worked at Lake Country Christian School in her summers for 7 years, volunteering at first and working her way to an assistant in the Pre-K classroom. Additionally, “Kendra Roulette and Frank Cooper were in StuCo my sophomore year… interacting with them… has had the biggest impact on me seeing all that they do for our school. They made me want to give back and make a difference in my school.”
difference.” She also attributes her mother with her drive to accomplish impeccable grades, being involved with different organizations, and being a leader in her school.
When she isn’t volunteering her time or doing homework she is usually hanging out with her family or friends. “Also homework… Academics are huge, I feel like I need that to succeed in life… especially for college,” stated Dewitt.
One last piece of advice from Savannah to underclassmen, “Enjoy it, it went way faster than I thought it would go. Any opportunity that you get, do it and enjoy it. I’d also say look for opportunities to make a difference. There are so many places, so many people to help and to make a difference.” She also says, "That's one of my goals this year, I just want to leave my mark on the school."
One of the individuals Savannah looks up to is her mother, “she’s like super successful, senior vice president at her company, she works at PennWell… seeing her drive for everything is inspiring, she makes me want to make a
Savannah is looking at UCO and OSU to attend next year for Occupational Therapy. “It’s something I’ve had my mind set on for a while… but it’s my goal.” We asked her if she plans on coming back to Sand Springs after she graduates and she says, “I think I’d be okay with coming back to Sand Springs, the small community is why I am leaning more towards UCO… it’s a smaller community… I think you meet more people.”

DOG
Fall Allergies That Can Affect Your Dog
The fall season brings crisp cool evenings, pumpkin scents and flavors, and beautiful colors! It is such a wonderful, and often busy, time of year that you can easily miss the effects that fall’s pollen, dust, leaves, and grass can have on your furry companion. For people, fall allergies lead to respiratory symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, and a runny nose. For dogs, they lead to skin irritation symptoms such as constant licking, biting, scratching, and red or raw skin. If your pup loves to roll around in your leaf piles or play fetch in the tall grass, you need to be aware of some of these symptoms that your dog could be showing. In Oklahoma this time of year, hay is being baled, grass is being mowed, and that fall breeze is getting stronger, which all lead to the spread of many allergens. We all love opening our windows in the fall to enjoy that fresh breeze, but oftentimes that only invites those allergens into your home which find their way to your dog’s skin. So even if your dog is rarely outside, that doesn’t mean their skin is completely safe. Fall allergies don’t affect every dog, and certain breeds are more susceptible than others. Regardless, it is always smart to be prepared in case you notice your pet having a reaction. As your dog ages, they can also develop allergies so even if your young and healthy pup didn’t battle allergies before, they could still face them down the road. It is always recommended that you consult your veterinarian about any health concerns you have with your dog, but here are a few
ways you can relieve skin irritations yourself: • An oatmeal bath can calm the skin • Placing a shirt on them can prevent scratching or biting any irritated skin • Using a recovery cone will keep your dog from licking and/or biting any irritated areas Here are also some preventatives that can be made in order to lower the chances of your dog having a reaction to fall allergies: • Keep your windows closed on windy days • Use an air filtration system in your home • Bathe your dog monthly to keep their skin free of any allergens • Provide a healthy diet containing the appropriate amount of protein, vegetables, fruits, fat, and fiber (avoid food containing grain) Be aware of the fall allergies that can affect your dog, but don’t let it keep you from enjoying the great outdoors with them! The fall weather is too perfect not to spend outdoor time with your four-legged friend. Take them exploring through the trails of Keystone Lake or enjoy a nice walk on the Katy Trail. Your dog will let you know if their skin is bothering them, so as long as you know what symptoms to look for, you are your furry friend are set for fall! Written by: Katie Thomas

Where are they now? Rundown:
• Sand Springs Graduating Class of 1955 • Occupation: Lawyer • Sand Springs Education Foundation Induction: 2000 • Colleges: · Phillips University · University of Oklahoma · University of Minnesota · University of Tulsa · University of Nevada • Lawyer Heroes: Atticus Finch, Abraham Lincoln, Mohandas Gandhi, and Nelson Mandela. Martin Luther King, Jr once said "The Arc of human history is long, but it bends towards justice." This is the motto for one Sand Springs graduate, as he sees this as the responsibility of all humanity, to uphold the Arc of human history bent towards justice. M. David Riggs is a philanthropically driven individual that started his journey in Sand Springs, OK. He continues the
lessons and values he learned in his highlighted career in Tulsa, but his roots are still very much with the Sandites. M. David Riggs is currently one of the founding partners of Riggs, Abney, Neal, Turpen, Orbison & Lewis, now simply known as Riggs Abney. The law firm was started in Tulsa, Oklahoma by four graduates from the University of Tulsa College of Law, one of which, was David Riggs. Originally known as Riggs, Abney, Neal & Turpen, merged with Robinson, Lewis, Orbison, Smith & Coyle in 1994. Today the law firm spreads out from Tulsa and Oklahoma City, all the way over to Denver, CO. The influence M. Riggs has been able to have on the Sand Springs community has spread far and wide, as this involved and passionate man has taken the teachings of his foundation in Sand Springs well beyond the city limits. We recently had the chance to have

an interview with David as we spoke on his time in Sand Springs. M. Riggs began his education in Sand Springs, spending K-12 in the Sand Springs Public Schools. David remembers, "Things were simpler then." He remembers fondly his time in the school system, so much so that all of his children have attended school in Sand Springs. David spent a majority of his time playing baseball, for which he went to college on a scholarship. Additionally he threw discus and played football, all in all he lettered in three sports, all while keeping his academic levels top notch. As he remembers back to his schooling years, David recalls several individuals that contributed to his learning and success. Alex Pogue, his grade school principle at Lake School, "had a great influence on me." O'Neil Adams, his coach, Riggs remembers, "was not your typical coach, the win at all costs type," and related very well to him. Along with several other teachers he accredits their influence in creating the man he is today and the opportunities he has been afforded. David's senior year he became the first Student Body President of the Student Senate. In all the years prior the Student Senate had not been in existence. David recalls, "I had never presided over anything." In his first appointment he remembers calling a vote and asking, "all in favor raise your right hand, all opposed raise your left hand." He chuckles at the memory but states, "the kids didn't know anything was wrong but she (the supervising teacher) laughed." After graduating in 1955 he moved onto Philips University and graduated with a B.A. in Philosophy, English and Political Science. While Riggs was at Phillips he received the Outstanding Creative Writer Award, the Outstanding Athlete Award and served as President of the Student Body again. Later he moved on to graduate from the University of Oklahoma with his Masters Degree in Philosophy at the top of his class and then completed a Special Studies in

Crime & Poverty from the University of Minnesota. In 1968 from the University of Tulsa College of Law he graduated with his Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree and a year later he graduated from the University of Nevada in the National College of Juvenile Justice.
As he has moved on from his academic career he founded the law firm Riggs Abney and has served in the Oklahoma House of Representative and the Oklahoma Senate. He continues to be involved in the Oklahoma Community by serving as Chairman of the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, the Oklahoma Nature Conservancy, and the Sutton Avian Research Center. His dedication to these environmental organizations shows his true passion for the continuation of our Oklahoma Environment. M. David Riggs final word of encouragement to the student Sandites is this, "Have an open mind to new ideas. The world is changing so rapidly, and yet values are universal and values are eternal." M. David Riggs is an exemplary Sandite that has kept his roots and his values in mind during all of his successes. From all of us here at We Are Sand Springs, we thank David for his continued dedication to the community and to keeping the values of Sand Springs alive and well.

Sand Springs Ministerial Alliance
There are a lot of great things happening in the community of Sand Springs. There is a spirit of pride, unity and commitment to working together in order to continue Sand Springs on its path of excellence. Over the past few years there has been a resurgence in the faith community to work together to make a difference in Sand Springs. The Sand Springs Ministerial Alliance is made up of member churches committed to spiritually leading and serving the community of Sand Springs. Steve Allen serves as the current president for the ministerial alliance. “It is exciting to see all the different churches come together to make Sand Springs better. Through several different projects we have done our best to set an example of community and cooperation in Sand Springs.” This year the Ministerial Alliance has led the charge to provide over 550 Back Packs with basic school supplies for children in our community. They have also worked together on a variety of service projects including pickup up trash on high visible streets and other city improvement projects. Brent Kellogg has been pastor of HillSpring Church for nearly 10 years. “It is powerful to see the community of Sand Springs come together on many levels. The education community, the business community, the local government and the faith community come together to bring a spirit of unity to our city. I see exciting things ahead for Sand Springs. It is great to see the faith community working together to help lead the way,” Kellogg said. Father Todd Nance is the priest at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and has been involved with the Ministerial Alliance for a little more than a year. “I enjoy working with the other ministers. It is a joy to be around and work with 26 WeAreSandSprings.com | September 2017
people who have the same goals to bring people closer to Christ. It is great that we are working together to make our community stronger,” Nance said. In the coming months the Ministerial Alliance will be organizing the Annual Boo on Broadway event that will be held Sunday, October 29th from 2 to 5 pm at the Triangle. If you or your business would like to participate feel free to contact Pastor Brent Kellogg at HillSpring Church at (918) 446-9273 or Brent.Kellogg@HillSpring.tv . The Ministerial Alliance will also be presenting Christmas Gift Cards to the police and firemen the first part of December. If you would like to help by making a donation to the gift card campaign, feel free to contact Pastor Steve Allen at Harvest Church (918) 245-0193. Sandite Chatter: Colton's Steak House & Grill
A
rkansas-based Colton's is a steak-house concept that originated in 1996. Several entrepreneurs and restaurateurs pooled their thoughts and talents together to create a place that any average Joe could walk into and feel right at home. Originally, the restaurant was supposedly named after a late 1800's-era Texas Ranger who was passionate about two things, big steaks and playing poker. According to legend, J.T. Colton was good friends with famed Sheriff Matthew Dillon. Dillon owned a steak house and gambling hall located in Dodge City, Kansas; where Colton reportedly played cards and tried to tell Matt how to run things. The entrepreneurs and restaurateurs got something right, because once the concept was completed they formed what would become Colton's Restaurant Group Inc. In August 1996 the first location opened in Conway, Arkansas. A second location was opened in Searcy, AR. To date there are over 30 franchises of Colton's Steak House & Grill in Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. Colton's Restaurant Group Inc. will now be making their way to Sand Springs in the new River West Development. The restaurant will open in the spring of 2018 providing a casual, western atmosphere. The restaurant will join ALDI and Warren Clinic which are currently under construction and El Maguey, Starbucks, and Holiday Inn Express which are finished. Let us know what your thoughts are, we sure are excited to see Sand Springs grow!
Melissa Zajic SS needs more restaurant variety!! What about Aldi Miranda Hampton Never eaten at a Colton's but excited for more sit down eating options!! Sharon Mitchell Goss That would be fantastic!
