2018 Car Checklist Each new year brings opportunities to improve ourselves and improving our vehicles. You can't get where you want to if if your car breaks down on the way. Run through this 2018 new year car care checklist to ensure your car starts off the new year on the right foot... tire?... as well. Brakes - Your brake pads take a beating all year round. If you hear any squealing or grinding when you hit the brakes, bring it in to Keystone Chevrolet right away. Battery - Without a good working battery, your vehicle won't be able to get where you're going. A sign of a weak battery is while using your power windows they move up or down slower than usual. Lights - Headlights, brake lights, license plate lights - you name it, the lights on your vehicle each serve a purpose. If your lights go out it could be unsafe and could land you a ticket. Emergency Kit - There's no excuse for not being prepared. Your vehicle should have an emergency kit just in case. Include things like water, food, warm clothes, a back-up phone, and road flares.

Senior in the Spotlight
S E N I O R in the
SPOTLIGHT As Sandites cling tight to their winter blankets and warm cozy fires, student Sandites are revving back up to go to school. Allie Ornelas, our first Senior in the Spotlight for 2018, begins her year with the rest of the Sandite Students, in full preparation mode, as this is her last semester at Charles Page High School! Allie started her journey as a Sandite at Angus Valley Elementary and continued at Clyde Boyd Middle School. She is currently a senior at Charles Page High School and has loved the experience of living in Sand Springs. She states, Mrs. Biggs (now the principal at Limestone Elementary), Mrs. Loveless, Mrs. Boncillie, and Mrs. Flood to name a few have helped her throughout her education. Mrs Spears, her Intro to Business teacher and also her dance coach has had an especially large impact on Allie; she states, “it’s kind of awesome to see the two different sides of her.” Learning about the ins and outs of businesses in Intro to Business has been interesting to Allie; so much so, that she is interested in going into a business major when she gets out of high school.
Allie has been accepted into University of Central Oklahoma and Kansas State University at this point in time. She is leaning more towards UCO mainly for the smaller class size and the extended possibility of getting involved. However, she also has family up by Kansas State which provides a family base close by. UCO also has the President’s Leadership Council program which Allie is also very interested in, the application process for that begins this month and Allie plans on applying and is hopeful to receive the scholarship. Kansas State also has a scholarship opportunity called the Civic Leadership Scholarship which she also plans to apply for. Allie plans on going into business classes and seeing what they have to offer in the college education. After exploring business classes she would like to narrow her field down to something more specific, possibly marketing, she isn’t quite sure about the specific topic. Allie has achieved much in her extracurricular activities but is extremely humble regarding her accomplishments
"I like helping other people."
SEN
Sand Springs' Own Allie Ornelas (she nearly didn’t tell us she was the Student Council President!). Allie is involved with Student Council (President) and NHS (Student Council Representative). She enjoys bringing together people to finish different projects at the school. In Student Council she floats around, making sure everyone has what they need to finish the projects they are in charge of. She serves as the motivator/idea person/ positivity person/everything else that is needed of her to the rest of the Student Council, and she thoroughly enjoys being this for them. An ongoing project she is proud of is the Little Free Library. The Little Free Library is an initiative to get kids to read, consisting of a box slightly larger than a mailbox filled with books placed around the community so children can take a book and leave a book whenever they want. (Be looking out for their social media posts promoting the launch of the Little Free Library!) Additionally, her 9th
grade year, Allie took a trip to Sand Springs Community Services, something there touched her about Sand Springs children needing warm clothes. So went back to the 9th grade center and headed a project to create a closet within the school. Sandite students could bring clothes they didn’t wear anymore to the school so students in need didn’t need to go all the way up to Sand Springs Community Services, they could stay within the school and get the things they needed. Allie is in the Top 20 of her class, and is involved with the Oklahoma Association of Student Councils. Allie has attended Basic and Advanced camps at the Oklahoma Association of Student Councils and applied to be a junior counselor for basic camp the following year. Needless to say she was accepted to be a junior counselor, and will return to camp as a counselor this year.

#Trending: Strange/Weird Trends 2017 was filled with strange trends, but as always there's next year... So without further adiu, here are some of the weird and wacky predicted trends of 2018.
Platform Crocs - While these massive green shoes might not be in Wal Mart, they are on the runway. It’s not the first time Crocs have graced the fashion runway but never before with the lift. Could these be the next Jordans?
Flower Based Beverages - This is predicted to be the main food for 2018. Elderflower, lavender, hibiscus, rose, and many other flowers will be infused into beverages. Lavender Lattes, hibiscus teas, elderflower cocktails, and roseflavored everything!
Tinsel Eyelashes - While these might have just been for the festive season, they seem to be sticking around longer than some might wish. Tinsel eyelashes might be a trend but on the bright side, it would be extremely easy to redecorate and rather inexpensive considering all the Christmas tinsel people are about to throw out.
Functional Mushrooms - According to Whole Foods, functional mushrooms, “traditionally used to support wellness as an ingredient in dietary supplements,” are being used in a variety of new ways. Mainly they will be ground and added to bottled drinks, coffees, smoothies, and teas.

#Trending: Winter Recreation Trends With winter comes shorter and colder days, but this is no reason to stop enjoying Sand Springs. Sand Springs has more recreational opportunities than meets the eye! From hiking Keystone’s Ancient Forest trails, to utilizing the Case Community Center, to taking advantage of a weekend getaway at a Keystone Lake cabin, and beyond, there are plenty of reasons in our community to say no to winter hibernation and yes to winter recreation. Here are four amazing winter recreation trends that you can do right here in Sand Springs.
Winter Hiking
Hiking is loved country wide, but it is often relegated to three seasons. However, winter can actual be the perfect season to go for a hike. Why? The trails are not filled with the seasonal hiker. Rather, they are wide open for exploration with friends and family. During this time though it is important to take health precautions with the colder temperatures. Here are some valuable tips to remember when going out for a hike: wear layers, have a safety kit with a compass, map, hand warmers, knife, and a headlamp, bring a friend, check the weather for the week, and pick the warmest day. These tips will keep you safe when you take your trip to Keystone Ancient Forest who has three amazing trails to enjoy. They also have some amazing things planned this winter. First, they have their annual Ancient Fun Run on January 13. The gates open at 6 AM, race begins at 7 AM, and it will end around 10 AM. This is an amazing opportunity to get out and give back because all proceeds will be going to benefit the Keystone Ancient Forest. There are also winter hiking dates: From 8am - 2pm January 13th (Fun Run 7am-10am); Hiking 10am-2pm January 27th February 10th & 24th
They also have scheduled tour guides available. For more information go to: http://www.sandspringsok. org/175/Keystone-Ancient-Forest
Winter Community For those who can’t seem to deal with the winter weather, Sand Springs has your answer. Case Community Center has some amazing options for our warm weather lovers. Go join a yoga, self-defense, or exercise class, or play a game of pick-up basketball in the gym. These are some great ways to stay active throughout the winter season. The best way to find out more about all of the great classes that Case offers is to go to http://www.sandspringsok. org/166/Case-Community-Center.

We especially loved the ranch's location, and long walks meandering around the property! We. Will. Be. Back.
Winter Biking
Sand Springs loves to bike, and there is no reason to stop biking during the winter season. Biking can be a great way to stay active during the colder months. The most important thing to remember when going out for a ride is to take practical winter precautions. Just like hiking, make sure that you wear multiple layers of clothing, cover your extremities, have a winter safety pack similar to the hiking one in case you get stranded, insulate your water bottle, a little less tire pressure is better for the cold environment, and lastly, used bikes that have been broken in are actually safer than newer bikes when the temperatures drop. Once you have taken the necessary precautions head out to River City Trail, right by Case Community Center, for a nice trail ride. This is a great trail for beginners. It is asphalt, and is only 1.8 miles long.

Where are they now?
“Work hard, think right, be responsible.” This is the motto of Lotsee Spradling, our first Where Are They Now for 2018! Lotsee’s great, great uncle, Charles Page founded Sand Springs, she supposes this is where she gets her passion for setting kids on the right path. Her journey of being the caring, loving, and passionate individual towards her community started right back in a small Sand Springs Elementary School. Lotsee began and graduated from Sand Springs Schools and says she received a great education while attending. She remembers that she was always an average student,
but worked extremely hard. “All my teachers helped me in different ways.” She recalls that she grew up in the country, interacting with very few kids her own age except Sunday School; needless to say starting real school and attending everyday was a culture shock. Miss Baugh, Mrs. Jesse Maule, and Mrs. McQuinn all nurtured her and instilled in her a lifelong respect for learning and teachers. At Garfield Elementary, Miss Brooks (4th Grade) taught her group Spanish as an experiment. “I remembered more from her 6 weeks of Spanish than most of my friends did from 2 years in high school. This was a very controversial undertaking at the time and I overheard discussions about it but didn’t understand until later how groundbreaking it was.” Going into Junior High was another culture shock for Lotsee, moving from class to class all day long; however there were several teachers that left an impression on her. Mrs. Amy Thomas (Math), Mr. Carl White (Typing), Mrs. Francis Green (English), Mr. Richardson (Science), Miss Effie Dunn (Physical Education), Mr. Burks (History), Mrs. Carpenter (Oklahoma History) and her favorite Mrs. Genia B Sparks (Algebra II). Her class was an ongoing experiment, they began Algebra I in the 8th grade when is usually started in the 9th grade. Whomever the teacher was, she sought them out because she knew they would make sure she was well taught and she learned. Mrs. Genia B Sparks made Algebra II fun, and she definitely learned a lot from her. In Charles Page High School, Lotsee recalls being only the 3rd or 4th class to attend CPHS. Mr. Beck was principal,
WTN
Think Right, Lotsee Spradling - WorkBeHard, Responsible. and Coach Thurman Garrett was attendance director. While she has lots of teachers in CPHS she specifically recalls a story about Coach Garrett. “ My junior year, I had Latin III. We had only 5 or 6 kids in that class, so we would go in at the first of her last class and translate our assignments to Mrs. Beck then go home or to study hall to wait for the bus. I waited for the bus. Mr. Garrett went around to every room looking for someone who could drive a standard shift car(on the column). I was the only one he could find who could. He drove a bus, but everyday he needed his car to be taken to the bus barn, which was where Cox Grocery (Warehouse Market) is now. Coach Garrett was a big man. Back then I was barely 90 pounds and 4 foot something. He had to bring me pillows to sit on so I could see over the steering wheel.” After school Lotsee worked at her family ranch, but she was also involved in pep club and went to all the football games and wrestling matches. “We had such a large pep club that we were able to take at least one bus full of girls and sometimes two buses to all the sporting events.” After graduating from Charles Page High School, one of Lotsee’s most bittersweet moments, she started summer classes at OSU. Majoring in Animal Science she intended to go on to Vet school but decided to stay and help run the family ranch. She was married in 1968 to Mike Spradling and had three girls, all of which are gainfully employed. Arron runs and equine program, boarding hoarses, giving lessons and trail rides. Stacy does medical research in a nuclear reactor on the University of Missouri campus. Michelle is a registered Nurse, working for St. Johns Hospital. All of her girls are graduates of CPHS! Lotsee and her husband fell in love with growing and taking care of pecan trees. At Flying G Ranch they now have a 750 acre orchard where Mike stays out with the nuts and squirrels while Lotsee supervises the pecan cleaning operation at harvest time. In other times she is kept busy by her six grandchildren. She has been extremely involved with the Hereford Association, Oklahoma Pecan Growers and many other organizations. Additionally she was active in Farm Bureau, traveling to the State capitol and Washington, DC several times. She has served on the Sand Springs School Board and has taken on substitute teaching a few times over the years. Overall, Lotsee has a passion for learning, caring for the ranch, but most importantly, kids. “All people should take time
to hang out with children. You don’t have to be smart or rich, just give them a little time. Show up at their activities. Take them for a walk, play a game, go to the park, read to them or let them read to you. Often, all it takes for a child to go in the right direction, is an adult showing up and taking the time to hang out.” We asked Lotsee what words of encouragement she would give to the students at Charles Page, “ Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Do not judge a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes. It doesn't matter what you have done or what has been done to you, if you have been abused in any way, I am truly sorry. But that is not who you are. You are the person whom you choose to be from this point forward. Be responsible for your thoughts and acts. Choose to have a good life and make it happen.” That is some wonderful advice for all Sandites coming into 2018; 2017 is yesterday, 2018 is today, from today on, we are responsible for our actions; so let's choose to make life good and make it happen here in Sand Springs!

The group states, “we hope that they see each other in school and notice, oh they are from a different church but our pastors get along, maybe we can too.” We had the chance to ask about future plans for the One Network and were able to see them dream together for a moment. Overall their dream is to be available to the community of Sand Springs. Right now the City Manager calls on the One Network for specific needs, but their hope is that they would be one of the first calls when something happens in the Sand Springs Schools. “It’s our kids there anyways, we would love to be the first call if something were to happen.” Additionally they hope to grow their If you are reading this and want to know how to get involved, the One Network first and foremost wants to encourage you to get involved in a local church. They state, “don’t buy into the lie that you are connected because of your phone, get involved in a local community of believers. And to the adults, get involved with your kids, make sure you know what is going on in their lives and in their youth groups.” Additionally the One Network is open to donations but most importantly they are in need of adults to help with their time in the events they put on throughout the year. Reader's Theatre FREE Playwright friends - SSCT is looking for original plays for their new readers' theatre program! You get to hear your play read out loud by actors and are welcome to invite friends and family to listen to the reading and provide feedback on your script. Busy actors - or actors who don't want to memorize lines - here is your opportunity for a monthly acting workout! The SSCT monthly Readers' Theatre program brings actors together to exervise their acting muscles by reading a play out loud. Everyone who attends the reading will get to read. If we have more actors than roles, we'll break the larger roles up into sections (a different actor may read for the character in each act). There is no age limit, but kids must be strong readers and have good attention spans to participate. This is not a performance or audition, just a script reading by local actors wanting to exervise their acting chops and network with other actors in the Tulsa and Sand Springs area. This is a minimal time commitment compared to acting in a show as there are no rehersals or memorization required.

It's Summertime...
Philanthropy continues to trend upward across the country, and there is no better time to consider how we can give back than the new year. The new year is an exciting time, with a blank canvas, where we can plan for how we will be generous for the next 365 days. So let’s keep giving trending by finding more ways to give back to our local community. Churches in Sand Springs have been setting the pace for community generosity in big ways, and they look to continue this in the upcoming year. Here are a few ways to connect with different church outreaches and missions. Church That Matters Meals That Matter meet each month to assemble 6-8 freezer meals that include cooking instructions as well as the recipe so you can make it again at home. Too participate you can contact Church That Matters, and donate meals to these families in need! Contact Information: info@churchthatmatters.com Hillspring Church March 19,20, and 21 Local Youth Groups will be getting together for a local outreach known as Selfless 18. This is open to 6th through 12th graders, and runs noon to 8 PM each day. This is an awesome opportunity to give money for adults that are unable to help the local community physically. June 7-13 The Hillspring Youth will be going to Guatemala for a mission trip. 6th to 12th graders are welcomed, and you may contact to sponsor a teenager who is going. Hillspring Adults will be going to Kenya June 12 through the 22, and they will be going to Guatemala June 19 through the 25. Contact for more information on how to go, or how you can give to this trip. Contact Information for Hillspring Outreaches: Matt Barnett at matt.barnett@hillspring.tv
