The summer heat has arrived! We are thrilled to be settled in to our new space on Main Street. We have so enjoyed seeing everyone as they have come in to say hello and enjoy some Dippin' Dots. I am convinced there is nothing better than having the privilege of serving our community throughout the day. As the owner of a marketing firm I know the power and conveniences that e-commerce provides to both business and consumer. However, through my observation, after only 6 months on Main Street, I must say there will never be a technology that can replace the experience of walking and shopping your downtown. Downtown Sand Springs is filled with community spirit and currently a fresh sense of renewal. The old buildings of Sand Springs provide such a rich esthetic to the new businesses that call them home. On Main Street we have watched individuals consider opening their own company in the buildings around us. The enthusiasm is so refreshing. It is truly a time of new life in downtown and we are happy to be a part of the growth.

. s Learn to love the journey to your summer destination just before the start of school. Nothing beats the feeling you get when driving down the road and knowing you can do as little or as much as your heart desires. Here are four ways to make sure you’re stocked up for your summer road trip. Bring lots of water - Grab a lot of water before you leave for your dream destination. Find one of the many places in your vehicle to stash bottles of water and always have extra to go around. Too much water isn’t enough water when you’re on the road. Don’t forget the sunscreen - It’s an easy mistake to make… forgetting the sunscreen. You don’t want to have to drive to the doctor into the middle of your road trip for burns. Remember to pack your vehicle smart and always think ahead. Get your vehicle serviced - Make sure the vehicle you put on the road will keep you there. Ensure your oil is changed and your fluids are checked. Always think safety first and make sure your brakes are in good working order as well. Have a plan - Don’t hit the road if you don’t have a plan. Your road trip can be spontaneous, but have a plan for the spontaneous just in case. It’s better to know your way around, or out of somewhere, beforehand. Have the proper navigation tools downloaded on your phone before your road trip in case you get somewhere with poor service. https://www.keystonechevrolet.com/specials/service

HEROES: My heroes have always been pastors. They are the people who I look up to and admire, even though I have been involved with sports most of my life. When I call up names of my heroes, it’s names like George Whittfield, Charles Finney, Smith Wigglesworth, and George Muller that pop into my head. These men are real heroes; men who gave their lives day-by-day for the betterment of mankind. I’ve had the pleasure of serving with some local supermen myself. I spent almost three years as an associate of Bill Weaver and five years with Pastor David Emigh. I got to help Pastor Emigh pioneer Word of Life Fellowship. Our nation was birthed by men like these two. Thomas Jefferson's father sent him off to college to be a minister, but the teachers wrote back to his father and said that he would make a better lawyer. Ben Franklin's dad sent him off to school to be a preacher, but he took the money and......well you'll have to read his autobiography to hear what he did in his own words. Out of 250 men considered to be our nation’s founding fathers, 85 of them were mentored by a pastor. The pastor’s name was John Witherspoon, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The very first Speaker of the House of Representatives was a pastor from New York. Sixteen of the first 18 colleges started in this nation were started by churches and presided over by pastors. Both Samuel Adams and Patrick Henry were deeply influenced by a preacher in their views of liberty and freedom, the Rev. Samuel Davies. Most all of the local militias of the day were lead by their local pastors; the British called them the Black Robe Regiments. Pastors in that day were the
Letter From The Mayor
role models that young men were pointed to, and there was one in most every village. It has been said that over 80% of the population of America heard the voice of George Whitfield. And he inspired many to become preachers, all to be better citizens. I often have wondered what our culture would be like today if pastors were the models our youth aspired to be. On Saturday June 16th I was privileged to spend the evening with some of these heroes. They volunteered to help umpire softball games at the Mayor's Cup. I myself have done this for many years, and this year some of our pastors and their staff stood by my side. It was a fun night that raised almost $3,000 for Sand Springs Community Services. We started at six o'clock and finished a little before twelve. $3,000 does not sound like a lot of money in these days and hundreds of people in Sand Springs could donate that much money with a single check and not bat an eye. But there's something special when a community of everyday people band together for an evening of fun, food, fellowship along with some friendly competition to benefit a good cause, lead by some of the greatest pastors history has ever seen. I believe that's what has always made this a great place to live. Not only the great things we accomplish together but the great pastors this city has to lead us. I don't have space nor time nor ink to list all these great men today, and days past, so let me say to you all: Pastors you are my heroes today and always.
"...There's something special when a community of everyday people band together for an evening of fun, food, fellowship along with some friendly competition to benefit a good cause.." Mike Burdge | City Mayor | City of Sand Springs

back to START YOUR SLEEPING SCHEDULE EARLY Two weeks before the first day of school students should make an effort to go to bed earlier at night and wake up near the same time they normally would during the school year. This allows students, of all ages, to transition back into a schedule more easily. Kicking the summer sleeping blues will be a thing of the past!
COMPILE A LIST OF STUDY SPACES Having a desk stocked with supplies is great for a homework space at the house, but sometimes the atmosphere can get.. less inspiring. Compiling a list of different places to focus on school work can keep the momentum going throughout the year. Some ideas: Chandler Park, Case Community Park, Keystone Lake, Starbucks, or even just the back porch can liven up a routine.
GET ORGANIZED Getting organized is best to do before the busyness begins. Organize and plan now so you can save time during the school year. Aside from your usual summer school shopping endeavors, make getting a planner filled out a priority. Plan ample time for homework, ensure you have your extracurricular activities scheduled, and make time for a social life. Parents of younger students, watch as your student begins to feel empowered when they are “in the know regarding the schedule.

Mental Health Days
Why So Serious
During the school year and cold months, anxiety, school and work can build up and cause undue stress. While you have your weekends to yourself, sometimes they aren’t quite enough to get away from the pressure. Oftentimes, the summer months are a great chance to regroup, refocus and reinvest. Whether you’re needing some much needed lake time, time to focus on your family, or time to revisit your career goals, there are plenty of local area businesses who give employees great benefits for their mental health.
Mental Health Days
Businesses nationwide are recognizing the importance of having mentally healthy employees, going as far to offer mental health days as a part of their benefits and time off packages. Generally, most people are accustomed to having vacation and sick days, but now you might be able to recoup in other ways. Whether you need to take some time off for yourself, your stress level, learn how to keep others mentally healthy, or just need time for whatever personal issues are boggling your brain, we’ve found several Sand Springs businesses that are helping their employees out. US Cellular W Wekiwa Rd. US Cellular, a northeastern Oklahoma staple, has dedicated its benefits to helping employees through their Paid Time Off (PTO) program. The company offers many medical benefits, as well as encourages employees to dress business casual and to enjoy flexible work arrangements. They also help employees de-stress by offering an education assistance program and associate adoption assistance.
Starbucks W Alexander Blvd. Our location was one of many of the franchise’s locations to close on May 29th to participate in racial bias employee training. The business has shown that one of its goals is to not only keep its employees mentally healthy, but to help train them so they can help keep others mentally healthy.
Reasor’s Foods Highway 97 Keeping your employees mentally healthy is built into the benefits package here. Not only is Paid Time Off (PTO) a part of their benefits package, they offer employees several gym membership discounts and a wellness program just for their mental and physical health.

Summer is here, and so is the heat! As much as we love soaking in the summer sun and watching our pets play in the sunlight, we need to be careful. Dogs and cats can get overheated if we are not careful, which can cause major health issues. So here are a few tips for keeping your pets cool and hydrated in the summer months. NEVER leave your pet in a hot car. In just one hour on a 75-degree day the temperature inside your car can reach 115 degrees. Even on a hotter day with the windows down, if left in the car for too long, your pet can be at risk for overheating. DON’T burn your pet’s paws: Stay off Asphalt! If the surface is too hot for you to walk on, chances are your pet won’t want to walk on it, either. Limit your time on surfaces like concrete and asphalt. Try rotating between those surfaces and grass. ALWAYS have fresh water available: If your pet’s water supply has an odd scent, or has been sitting in the sun for too long, they might get a bit finicky. Always make sure you have a fresh bowl of water for them. If it’s too hot, leave your pet at home. Generally, if it’s more than 85 degrees outside and you’re going to be outside for a considerable amount of time, it’s best to crate your dog or cat. Laying out in the sun for 5 hours on a hot day might be a great way for you to spend the day, but exposing your animal to those temperatures and direct sunlight exposure could cause them severe dehydration. LIMIT excessive exercise. Exercise is key to maintaining a healthy pet, but over exercise can cause room for concern. If you notice your dog panting rapidly after some play, give them a chance to recover. KNOW the signs of dehydration. Sunken eyes, lethargy, excessive panting, loss of appetite, dry mouth and depression are all symptoms of dehydration. Always pay attention to what your pet is trying to tell you, keep fresh water available, and make sure they are not overly exposed to the heat.
