Fall is upon us. I believe that fall is a magical time of year filled with games, community, and laughter. During this time of year I always feel a calling to be grateful. I am sure as you read through this September's magazine you will see this feeling reflected in our work and chosen topics to discuss. This is not by mistake. I invite you, this fall, to let the spirit of gratitude fall on you and get connected with communities of people that want to serve within a bigger cause. So many time, these days, we get swept away by the tangible things that we forget to touch the sustainable things in life. I am guilty myself. Take this month to purposefully brighten someone's day, encourage the cautious, and empower the hopeful.

Senior In The Spotlight

Colton Boone

This Charles Page High School student is skipping “In 5th grade I moved up to 6th grade. And in 8th through his senior year… and we’re not talking about grade my first hour was at the high school so I would have Senior Skip Day! to take a bus and leave class early to go back.” That’s in part because of his wonderful gift for math and uncanny ability to skip ahead grades. Meet honor student math whiz Colton Boone.

“Don’t give up. Those three years in high school are the most important in your life. They show where you are going to end up.”

and

Colton tells us every teacher in Sand Springs made an impact on him in some way, but it was his fourth and fifth grade teachers who influenced him the most.

And it wasn’t until late that this academic excellence got nationally recognized.

Colton has been at Sand Springs Public Schools since childhood, making close friends and great strides in Colton was nominated for the Congress of Future academics along the way. Science and Technology Leaders in Boston for a June 29th-July 1st event. He tells us he’s always been one… wait THREE... steps ahead in math. Colton’s been taking math classes for up to Dr. John C Mather, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics three grades ahead of where he should have been since and Science Director of the National Academy of Future fourth grade. Scientists and Technologists, nominated Colton. “In fourth grade my teacher pushed me ahead to 5th grade,” Colton said.

Colton Boone

Not knowing what the nomination was, Colton turned for help. “I showed it to my mom and said.. hey I don’t know what this means.” But after consideration, Colton got with a school counselor and decided he’d attend. He was flown to the three-day event and joined students from across the country to hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science recipients to talk about leading scientific research. It interested Colton, especially because of the love and support that Sand Springs and the school system has instilled in him. “I love it here,” Colton said. “I have a close group of friends. It’s a pretty cool place.” When asked about his college aspirations, Colton says he’s interested in going to apply at Oklahoma State University, the University of Tulsa, and OU.

Senior In The Spotlight

With such a bright future (and great ACT score), Colton has set himself up for success. He says he hopes to get a good education and have a career in software engineering and computer coding. But if he could do anything in the world, he says he’d invent something. “I would want to invent something that would help a lot. Everyone at that conference, they found something they wanted to do and they used it to help.” To those going into their freshman, sophomore and junior years, Colton gives this advice. “Don’t give up. Those three years in high school are the most important in your life. They show where you are going to end up.”

#GOLDRUSH You can bet during football season Sand Springs has unmatched community spirit. So many people, no matter if you’re a lifelong Sandite or just new to town, can look in either direction at a home game and see a friendly face cheering on our students. Seeking its 7th straight playoff berth, Sand Springs Varsity Football has some awesome traditions that keep our school spirit alive.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE GAMES… CAPTAIN SANDITE “You wish you were a Sandite. Oooo Awww!” Known as Captain Sandite, Charles Page High School teacher Frank Cooper dresses the part. Wearing that oh-so recognizable helmet and cape while riding his bike into the pep rallies, Captain Sandite leads the crowd in cheers and chants to get you pumped for the big game.

SANDITE TAILGATES Before every home football game, a tailgate fundraiser is held in front of the stadium, rolling out hot dogs, burgers, chips and drinks benefiting various entities of Sandite Athletics. Tailgates begin at 6 p.m. for home games.

CPHS NEW FLAG After the Charles Page High School flag was stolen last year, Athletic Director Rod Sitton got corporate sponsors to buy new flags, now enlisting a whole group of Sandites who will wear t-shirts and run the flag across the field before the game and after the Sandites score.

GET INVOLVED WITH THE SANDITE QUARTERBACK CLUB... SANDITE BLACK & GOLD FOREVER MEMBERSHIP With nearly 50 members last year, the Quarterback Club says they hope they’ll have 100 this year! Follow the team into the locker room at halftime and hang out for about 10 minutes with a snack and a drink. Don’t forget that you’ll get reserved seats and parking at the home games! KIDS CLUB QUARTERBACK CLUB Get your kid involved with the Quarterback club, and he or she will be able to run with the varsity players through the tunnel and take turns being a captain at the coin toss. $10 gets you a t-shirt and the membership.

WHAT SEPARATES SAND SPRINGS FOOTBALL & ATHLETICS FROM THE REST? Ms. Tirita - Head of Sandite Quarterback Club

“I think that it’s the community spirit. Every small town likes friday night lights because you can go to the game. What makes the Sandites stand out is that so many people get that sense of being a part of a Sandite even if they haven’t been lifelong Sandites. You can look in either direction and you can see a lifelong Sandite. I think it’s a community and it’s a great place to show community spirit in any sport or activity that goes on, in good times and in bad.” “With the funding shortage, we’re still able to raise enough money to pick up the slack where we don’t have the funding within the school system for team sports, dance, cheer and band and all that.”

SAND SPRINGS HOMECOMING PARADE A longstanding tradition before the varsity homecoming game. Now on the Thursday before the game, be a part of the fun in downtown Sand Springs. Years past have seen thousands show up for the parade. This year the parade is on October 4th.

Where are they now?

Sam Harris

The Original American Idol. An Oklahoma Music Hall of Famer. A singer/songwriter. A Broadway actor. A film and television star. A writer, director, producer and author. These are many words that describe this special Sandite, Sam Harris. He sits among many glorified Sandites in the Sand Springs Education Foundations’ (SSEF) Hall of Fame.

Tommy Tune’s “Grease.” You might have seen Sam in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Cabaret,” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

“It meant so much to me, more than a lot of other awards, because it came from home,” Sam said.

“And, though not really affecting my career path, Wayne McDowell, my psychology teacher, actually saved my life after a very very low time in my life at 16, when I was struggling with my sexuality. He told me nothing was wrong with me. He told me to accept and love myself. I’m not sure I’d be here if not for him.”

“To be honored by my peers is so personal. My father was the band director at CPHS, so it was a part of my life from my earliest memories. He’s actually the one who should be honored. He affected a lot of people’s lives."

This Sandite star also co-wrote the TBS sitcom “Down to Earth” and was the character “Pearly Pearl,” on the CBS Sitcom “The Class.”

Sam graduated Charles Page High School in 1979 and was later inducted into the SSEF’s Hall of Fame in 1999.

Soon after graduating, Sam made his splash into stardom by coming out the victor on the premiere season of Star Search in 1983. Star search ran until 1995, featuring a variety of entertainment categories like singing, dancing, and comedy. In an interview, Sam says he’s often been called “The Original American Idol” because of the stark resemblance to the popular TV show that first aired in 2002. The stardom kept coming for Sam, who sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone” on the Oprah Winfrey Show. He’s recorded nine studio CD’s, including his two Top 40 Hits “Sam Harris” and “Sam-I-Am.” Rolling Stone Magazine listed him as “One of the 100 Greatest Singers of all Time.” On Broadway, Sam saw more success. He received a Tony Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk nominations for his work in Cy Coleman’s “The Life,” as well as, a Drama League Award and Drama Desk nomination for his role in

But for someone so successful, his childhood in Sand Springs wasn’t the easiest. “When I was growing up, our house burned down. TWICE,” Sam said. “And, though not really affecting my career path, Wayne McDowell, my psychology teacher, actually saved my life after a very, very low time in my life at 16, when I was struggling with my sexuality. He told me nothing was wrong with me. He told me to accept and love myself. I’m not sure I’d be here if not for him.” Sam tells us he remembers all of the great teachers at Sand Springs Public Schools who helped him pave the way for his decorated career. “My second grade teacher, Mrs. Maule, let me write and perform my own plays. She recognized my drive and gave me a platform to express it.”

Sam Harris

Where are they now?

Because of the way I first came to the attention of the country, lots of people know the phrase, “Sam Harris from Sand Springs, Oklahoma!” I love that. It makes me proud. And now, there’s a street named after me! Which reminds me of a joke in my family.

Sam would like to give his high school journalism teacher, Laura Schaub, a shout out for supporting him and giving him the freedom to create. And that freedom keeps churning for Sam, who is now finishing his second book and filming his memoir “HAM: Slices of a Life” for television. In 2010, Sam was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, sitting with stars such as Kristin Chenoweth, Leon Russell, Toby Keith, Carrie Underwood, and Woody Guthrie. When asked what he’d like to say to the community of Sand Springs, he left us with this. “Thank you, I am grateful,” are the first words that come to mind. Thank you for letting me thrive and grow. I was quite the mix of stand out, driven performer and misfit “sissy-boy.” It was very tough at times. But I also had such amazing support in so many ways, from teachers, neighbors, and mostly my parents, who have been my rock all my life. " I know what my roots are and they have affected my entire life. I am so blessed to have grown up Sand Springs, and I hope I represent well!" Well, Mr. Harris, we are proud of you and where you are now. From everyone here at We Are Sand Springs, we wish Sam well and the best of luck in his newest endeavors.

don’t want to leave. It’s its own little oasis.” Volunteers and staff know it as “The Little Red Barn,” but it’s better known in Sand Springs as the American Therapeutic Riding Center (ATRC).

A New Jersey girl turned University of Tulsa business student, Alonzi found herself in a vastly different environment from the one she “I walked in with the expectation that lives of clients were going to be changed to some called home.

forever. The ATRC specializes in working with people who have varying ability levels and physical ailments, helping them through equine facilitated therapy. Located just north of Highway 412 on North 177th West Avenue, the ATRC serves 85-90 students weekly, working heavily with Sand Springs Public Schools and the district’s special needs programs. Executive Director Denise Ward has been on board for quite some time, celebrating her 11th year in August and hasn’t wavered in support of the life-changing work the ATRC is doing. American Therapeutic Riding Center

“I was a strategic planner for corporate real estate when I came to ATRC,” Ward said. “I walked in with the expectation that lives of clients were going to be changed to some degree… but what blew my mind is when our volunteers started changing.” If one thing remains constant at the ATRC, it’s that everyone who is involved, changes. Meet ATRC client Zachery. He started with the ATRC at 14 after watching his brother Brian go through the program. A serious bullying issue had plagued Zachery at school, sometimes causing him to lash out and physically fight back. Zachery, on the autism spectrum, was a little intimidated by the big horses at the ATRC at first, but quickly overcame his fear of horses with weekly training sessions. Today at 22, Zachery has overcome his anger, fear and frustrations and has turned it into something productive. He still rides weekly and is a side walker, assisting instructors with new therapy horses The transformation of ATRC’s clients and volunteers can be summed up in their motto of only three words. “Win. Win. Win.”

In therapeutic riding, the number one most improved attribute is communication. Clients see improved focus, anger management skills, grief coping, and cognitive, emotional and physical improvements.

“Go into it with an open mind. You never know who you will meet or how your life will be impacted.” Ward tells us when clients make that connection with their horse, it’s really helping them through their challenge. With such great things already accomplished, the ATRC keeps its heart grounded and its eyes forward. The Run for Special Needs Benefit Barrel Race is set for October the 27th at the Osage County Fairgrounds in Pawhuska. The ATRC also has their Championship Rodeo booked for April 26th-27th at the Osage County Fairgrounds, too. When asked what advice Alonzi would give to people wanting to serve and volunteer, she left us with this. “Go into it with an open mind. You never know who you will meet or how your life will be impacted.” To get involved or learn more about the transforming work the ATRC is doing, visit atrcok.org or give them a call at 918-246-9450.

Join the Sand Springs Community Theatre for their presentation of The Fourposter by Jan de Hartog. This two-character story is set from 1890-1925 and focuses on the marriage roller coaster between Agnes and Michael. The set is simple, consisting of their bedroom, dominated by a large fourposter bed in the center of the room. The simplicity of the play and set has made it a popular choice for many theatrical groups. Mark your calendars because you won't want to miss this funny, heartwarming look at 35 years of a marriage. The production takes place at The Central 9th Grade Center Auditorium in Sand Springs on October 18th, 19th and 20th at 7 p.m. You can also catch the show on October 21st at 2:30 p.m. We hope to see you there!
