Hip Hip Hooray ~ Spring is coming! Oh Springtime.. the time of year when everything turns green and... ALL of the colors of the rainbow. Babies are born and everyone seems to have a skip in their step. Possibilities seem endless and refreshing in the Spring. I think that is why I love it so much. Of course, the sunshine and vitamin D don’t hurt either. This spring our family and business is using the word FRESH as inspiration. We want to be a breath of fresh air to those that we meet. We want to be intentional in our development to become and maintain our “freshest” selves. Using this time of newness in order to spring, pun intended, ourselves into our most intentional futures. Sandites, this spring, join us in the freshness that comes with the season. Remove old habits and replace them with healthy ones. Take time to notice the colors popping up around you. And let’s make this spring, together, the freshest.

Spring is upon us – flowers, fun, and of course, allergies. Many people are aware that their pets can experience allergies, but the symptoms that your pet experience can be very different from those of people. The most common symptom seen with an allergic pet is itchy skin. This can manifest as obvious scratching of the body, but allergic pets may also lick their feet frequently, rub their faces, shake their heads, and have recurrent skin and ear infections. This is because pets process allergens (things in the environment that cause allergies) in a different way than people. Pets often absorb allergens through the skin, causing itching, redness, and inflammation, but they can also experience sneezing and watery eyes. The symptoms of allergies may be obvious, but the causes of allergies are harder to determine. There are literally thousands of things in your pets surroundings that can cause allergies.. These include trees, grasses, molds, and pollens, but could also be an ingredient in your pets food. One important question is: Does your pet itch year-round, or only at certain times? If your pet itches year-round, a food allergy may be the culprit. This means that your pet could be allergic to one of the ingredients in their food. While common in people, food allergies account for only about 15% in pets. This means that the “grain free” and “all natural” diets that are heavily advertised may not be of much help. The only way to treat a food allergy is with a very specific, and specially manufactured diet. Also, no other food – including treats or table food – can be fed to the dog or cat or your pet will still experience symptoms. For the seasonally affected, there are many treatments available. These include antihistamines, shampoos, fatty-acid supplements, oral anti-inflammatory medication, and even allergy testing. A consultation with your veterinarian is the first step in maintaining your pets comfort and relief from allergy symptoms.

Senior In The Spotlight
Charles Page High School student Caleb Bundy is a prime example of what it means to be a Sandite. His character and morals are completely in line with the community of Sand Springs, and his actions are in step with some of the great men and women that Sand Springs has produced.
Throughout his educational career in Sand Springs he states that there have been two teachers that have influenced him to become the individual he is today. Janet Johnson, his 7th grade science teacher inspired Caleb to the career path of doctor.
He started his Sandite education at the old ECEC, then moved to Prattville Elementary (where his aunt works as a 2nd grade teacher), to the 6th Grade Center, Clyde Boyd, 9th Grade Center, and finally Charles Page High School. He has plans to attend Oklahoma State University next year, live on campus and is leaning towards Human Nutrition as a major but is planning on going Pre-Med. Caleb is keeping an open mind as to the career path after Medical School but knows that the medical field is the path for him.
“I had the time of my life in that class, we did dissections, I just had fun. That’s where I learned that I like medicine.”
Currently he is involved with the Student Council (STUCO), National Honor Society, the tennis team, Youth & Government, Fellowship of Christian Students, the latest school musical, and the academic team. When he isn’t in one these extracurricular activities, he is attending church and youth group at Olivet Baptist Church here in Sand Springs. Caleb and his girlfriend Chloe started Fellowship of Christian Students (FCS) when they saw a void in Charles Page. They came into high school and found that Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) wasn’t really present, so it began with small Bible studies during lunch. It has grown to a full group meeting every other week in a classroom discussing Bible verses and chapters.
Caleb Bundy has been in STUCO since his 8th grade year, and has held the positions of Junior Class President and Student Council President. He says that his sophomore year is when he decided he really enjoyed and wanted to pursue Student Council as a major extracurricular activity. He has attended BASIC and ADVANCED put on by the Oklahoma Association of Student Councils (OASC). Caleb states,
Frank Cooper is the second teacher to greatly impact this Sandite. “Lots of words of wisdom from that man.” Caleb has worked with Mr. Cooper since his sophomore year and is currently the STUCO President and works hand in hand with Mr. Cooper on a variety of projects.
"Get involved with as many things as you can"
Senior In The Spotlight “BASIC was where I really came out of my shell, it’s where I became who I am today.” BASIC is a WORKshop in Alva, Oklahoma that allows delegates to participate actively in planned activities to improve their leadership abilities. They spend 10-12 hours daily learning and practicing leadership skills in student council groups. Caleb attended BASIC and this upcoming summer he will be a Junior Counselor at BASIC where he will be helping lead 14 boys and 14 girls. He has met people from all over Oklahoma and says the experience really opened his eyes. This year Caleb in conjunction with STUCO is putting on G.O.L.D. week (which stands for “Give Often. Love Deeply.”) the week of April 15th. The profits from this philanthropy initiative will go to Make Promises Happen; their goal is to raise $4,000 which will enable 5 individuals to attend an adventure camp. G.O.L.D. week will start with a movie night at Case Community Park, and then a dodgeball tournament, Sweet Treat Wednesday, a “Mangeant” and finally a Pep Assembly. Caleb encourages everyone in the community to talk it up and participate, mention G.O.L.D. week in face to face conversations and go to the events and participate!
“Can I just quote Frank Cooper? His iconic pieces are, ‘You are important, you are loved, and the joy of life is in the journey.’ I live by those everyday and I want others to feel like that too.” We always ask our Senior in the Spotlight to give advice to the future generations of Sandites, and Caleb’s advice comes rather simply, “Get involved with as many things as you can.” he also added, “Can I just quote Frank Cooper? His iconic pieces are, ‘You are important, you are loved, and the joy of life is in the journey.’ I live by those everyday and I want others to feel like that too.” Thank you Caleb Bundy, and good luck as you graduate this year!

CITY OF SAND SPRINGS Letter by Sherry Durkee
S.S.P.S Superintendent
Over the last few years our community, including our city, our chamber, our schools, our local church network, and our patrons have unified together to improve the community as a whole and more specifically our schools. This is an incredible time for Sand Springs Public Schools. It is such an honor to serve our community through this era of vision for the future of our students. During fiscal year 2017, together with our students, teachers, administrators, Board of Education, parents, and stakeholders, we embarked on a Continuous Strategic Improvement process that helped us focus on specific goals for our district. Out of that work came our mission statement: Empowering every child to maximize their potential for responsible, productive citizenship in the 21st Century. We take this mission seriously at SSPS. With that mission in mind, it is fun to discuss the great things going on at all grade levels. At the Elementary level, we are now including project-based learning in alignment with core academic skills to prepare our youngest Sandites for maximizing their growth. We are now incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) at every grade level. Our goal is to make learning relevant so students can see how their learning applies to life outside of school. While a focus on academic learning is a priority, our teachers and staff embrace the importance of character education as a part of essential instruction for children to understand citizenship in the 21st Century. Our community has been an active partner in these efforts! At Clyde Boyd Middle School, we build on and extend the foundation established at our elementary schools. Character education is continued through our LAFS (Life Applications for Students) classes where students are taught skills essential for building relationships and becoming better citizens. Character traits such as responsibility, trust, empathy, service, honesty, citizenship, courage, kindness, gratitude, and integrity are embraced and this becomes an expectation for behavior. Alongside character education, CBMS prioritizes career exploration while building elective courses that allow students to explore future opportunities. Alongside core reading, math, science and social studies, we now offer robotics, aerospace, computer science, engineering design and modeling. Fine Arts programs are also a primary focus offering band, Jazz band, choir, and art. We have added expanded programming for our freshmen through senior students in the last few years as well. Our students now have a full array of STEM options including Bio-Medical Sciences, Computer Science, and Engineering. Through our partnership with Tulsa Technology Center, we currently offer Manufacturing, Interior Design, and will be adding Foundation of Construction in the fall. Our award-winning drama, band and choir programs continue to attract a large number of students who are incredibly talented in these areas. We are intentionally focused on making sure our students have access to experiences that will prepare them for life outside of high school - to be a successful 21st Century citizen who stays planted in our region helping to grow the Oklahoma economy.

A little-known program that has experienced tremendous growth over the last few years is our Virtual Academy. SSPS is incorporating a blended learning model that allows students to customize their education. Currently, our Virtual Academy enrollment includes students in grades 3 through 12. While we have some students who are full-time virtual students, we have some who take expanded coursework virtually while still accessing all the other programs we offer. For example, a student may have two periods of virtual classes, attend Tulsa Community College for concurrent enrollment and still be a part of our drama production or a competitive athletic sport. Our students must be a genuine part of the design of their day to keep them engaged and to keep their learning relevant. The beauty of this model is that we still have learning labs available with teacher support to ensure these students are successful academically. It is important to note the importance of our Board of Education who supports and shares this vision to ensure our students have access to what they need for a successful transition out of high school. This Board consists of five people who genuinely care about the future of Sand Springs and the future of our students. They understand the significance of building a strong foundation now in preparation for tomorrow. No matter how clichĂŠ this may sound, our children really are our future! It is an amazing time to be a SANDITE! Sherry Durkee, Superintendent Sand Springs Public Schools

BE THE BEST, MOST FRESH
you. What does it mean for our lives to be fresh? Does it mean that everyday is a new adventure? Does it mean that we are a breath of fresh air to those around us? Does it mean that we have a fresh outlook on what is happening around us? Or does it mean all of those things and more? This spring, we want to invite you to be the best, most fresh you. There isn’t a checklist of things for you to do that will automatically make your life fresh. There isn’t a how-to on making your interactions with others a breath of fresh air, we can only do things that bring us out of our comfort zone to push our boundaries into being our best selves. There isn’t a checklist, but we have a few ways to get you started. After all, your freshest self is you’nique to the you that you are today.
Think of it this way, would you rather have a life that is fresh or one that is frozen? If you are like most people your intentions to achieve goals is not what is lacking, but it is the stamina in completing those goals that is where the stall, the fold, the trip happens. Experts suggest that if you feel stalled in the fruition of your goals, is to simplify and commit to doing to one thing. Just one small thing at a time. Afterall no goal is worth having if it could be achieved in one step. True accomplishments happen with the sum of many, many many steps. So let’s break it down with an example. Maybe you have a goal to get organized? Start by doing one thing. Maybe clean out your spice cabinet or toolbox. Committing to doing one small thing each week could be the nudge you need to see progress toward your big goals. What can we do today that gives us fresh energy to continue towards our goals? Whatever your big ambition might be, start something today towards that goal that you can finish. Learn something new, curiosity is a powerful state of mind so find something new about your interests that you have not already found. While you’re finding out new information, challenge yourself to try something new as well. Wake up early, go for a jog, hike a trail, book a trip…. Unplug for a while and allow yourself to have some true childlike fun - kick off your shoes - play in the yard. Increasing the amount of play in your life has been proven to increase your creativity and in turn, allow you to see your goals from a fresh angle. Choose to have a fresh life this spring in Sand Springs!
Need some help setting your goals? There are four areas of life in which we can make small improvements that allow us to be our best selves. Learn more about these areas online at wearesandsprings.com

Spring not only ushers in fresh plants, but it also ushers in a fresh outlook on life and fresh growth for our families and homes. What makes a house a home? It’s what we put into the home that gives it life and allows us to breathe easy as we enter into it. Here is a spring checklist for your home that allows you to breathe fresh air, and all those who enter.
FRESH PAINT While the weather is mild, put a fresh coat of paint on the exterior of your house. This not only increases property value, but also gives your home a fresh facelift with minimal effort on your part. If your home has siding that is dilapidated, look into getting new siding installed. Call a siding expert to see if new siding is a possibility.
SCHEDULE A PEST INSPECTION No one likes the insects and rodents that make their home in the nooks of our own homes. So schedule an appointment with a pest management company to keep your house pest free.
March 2019 | WeAreSandSprings.com 27
CLEAN OUT YOUR CABINETS While this may not increase property value, the simple act of cleaning out the spice cabinet or the pots and pans gives us a sense of where everything is in our kitchens. When we know where everything is, we can easily find what we have, and we don’t buy supplies we already have but can’t find. SCHEDULE AN AIR DUCT INSPECTION We are about to enter into summer, which means that we will be using our A/C units much more. Blocked ducts can cost you hundreds of dollars in energy bills this summer, have a company come out and inspect your air ducts to make sure they are ready for summer. CHECK YOUR PROPANE TANK FOR LEAKS All propane piping, connections, and fittings are threaded, these connections occasionally dry out which leaks propane along the line. You can check for leaks yourself with soap and water, put the soapy water on connections and if you see bubbles you have a leak. Or you can call a professional to check your propane lines for leaks, you still use propane for your water heater, cooking appliances, and clothes dryers.
Vets That Matter
Sandites in Service
YOU ARE NEVER ALONE
Everyday veterans and first responders that have fought for freedom and justice come home to find new challenges when transitioning back into the family and civilian lifestyles. These transitions can difficult, however, connecting with people who are or have faced the same obstacles can be helpful in the process. There is a group of veterans and first responders in Sand Springs fighting hard for their fellow comrades right here at home. Vets That Matter (VTM) is a locally organized group that is committed to providing connections to resources for service members young and older both in and out of service.
“We are giving a hand up not a handout. We are doing it in a way that not only is based on biblical values but demands personal growth. Having a solid foundation will help fortify families.” VTM’s noble mission is that they are fighting for the "Twenty-Two". Referring to the twenty- two veterans that take their lives by their own hands every day. There is a war that is still being fought by many veterans years after they return home.
This war is meant to be fought together and VTM is on a mission to make sure that veterans in and around Sand Springs know that they are not alone. Warren Hood with VTM says, “We are giving a hand up not a handout. We are doing it in a way that not only is based on biblical values but demands personal growth. Having a solid foundation will help fortify families.”
“We want people to know they are not alone and that no one will be left behind.” The organization’s website states that they want to be part of a solution in helping those in need of transition and crisis management. Fundamentally, VTM has set a goal to build individuals through networking, resources and strengthening families. Wayne Pait with VTM shared with us, “We want people to know they are not alone and that no one will be left behind.” Veterans that might in interested in connecting with VTM: Pre/Post deployed military members Short term military leaving a current service Long term military service retired March 2019 | WeAreSandSprings.com 29
"This year we are prepared to visit churches and other organizations to share our mission and stories" VTM will provide information and assistance on housing, education entities, job searches and Veterans Administration assistance in the local and metro area is their mission. First responders are encouraged to come to gather and tell your story. “This year we are prepared to visit churches and other organizations to share our mission and stories, Pait said.

Formal can be donated to the drive at River Stone Dry Cleaning and Laundry off of 113th in Prattville or at Boulder Coffee on Main Street. All donations will be laundered by River Stone Cleaners and delivered to Sand Springs Community Services (SSCS). SSCS then works with the schools to help students find what they are needing for Prom through the selections that arrive as a result of this drive.
