Ganwyd William Selwyn yng Nghaernarfon yn 1933. Ar ol treulio dwy flynedd o Wasanaeth Cenedlaethol gyda’r Royal Artillery, astudiodd yng Ngholeg Normal, Bangor rhwng 1954 ac 1956. Wedi hynny bu’n athro yn Ysgol Iau Maesincla ac Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen, Caernarfon. Ers ei ymddeoliad yn 1990 mae wedi bod yn peintio llawn amser, ac mae bellach yn enwog am ei luniau dyfrlliw a gwaith cyfryngau cymysg. Canolbwynt ei waith celf yw tirlun Gwynedd, ei gweithwyr a’i physgotwyr. Ym 1976 etholwyd ef yn aelod o’r Academi Frenhinol Gymreig. Ym 1988 enillodd gystadleuaeth peintio dyfrlliw yr 11eg Arddangosfa Singer a Friedlander/Sunday Times a hefyd enillodd wobr Arlunydd Cymreig y Flwyddyn 2001 yn ogystal â gwobr Hyd a Lledrith Llyn 2003. Mae ei gwaith i’w weld mewn casgliadau preifat ledled y byd a chasgliadau cyhoeddus gan gynnwys Llyfyrgell Genedlaethol Cymru, Cyngor Celfydydau Cymru, Prifysgol Bangor, Prifysgol Caerfaddon, Cyngor Sir Gwynedd a Cyngor Ynys Môn.
William Selwyn was born in Caernarfon in 1933. After completing National Service in the Royal Artillery, he studied at Bangor Normal College between 1954 and 1956. He subsequently taught Art at Maesincla Junior School and at Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen. Since his retirement from teaching in 1990 he has devoted himself to painting full time, becoming particularly noted for his watercolours and mixed media works. His art is centred on the landscape and coastline of Gwynedd, its farm workers and fishermen. In 1976 he was elected to the Royal Cambrian Academy. He is the winner of a number of art prizes: the 1998 Singer & Friedlander/Sunday Times Watercolour Competition; the 2001 Welsh Artist of the Year; and the 2003 Spirit of Llyn Art Competition. His work can be found in private collections worldwide and public collections including the National Library of Wales, Arts Council of Wales, University of Bangor, University of Bath, Gwynedd County Council and Anglesey County Council.
