Welcome to the modern era of male grooming, which no longer involves a dash of of Old Spice or an unruly, un-kept beard. Gen Y (otherwise known as Gen Apple) has created the hipster phenomenon, whereby these new age men get around in their skinny jeans with the bottoms rolled, collared shirt with the top button done up, creating a cool, calm and collected look. These men are well dressed and well groomed, being sure to not only oil their beards but to take part in a daily skin routine. On November 2nd, Ry.com.au will be launching a brand new Men’s Grooming range targeted towards the modern man. The new line of male products will include cleansers, moisturizers, razors and shaving accessories, travel bags and kits, cologne and a range of beard grooming tools and other manly products. Ry.com.au is currently Australia’s largest online hair care and beauty store, selling women’s favourites including Napoleon Perdis, ghd, Dermalogica, Clarins and more. The team at Ry are very much looking forward to launching the new line of carefully curated brands such as Bluebeards Revenge, Baxter of California, Anthony Logistics along with other trendy names. “Today, I think men understand its just good grooming and we are here to provide the best products at the lowest prices, delivered straight to your door, says Company Director James Patten. “It will be interesting to see the uptake of our new male geared brands alongside familiar names on our site including Clarins and Uppercut Deluxe. What Aussie Men Want:
A BODY LIKE THE WOLVERINE Personal Trainer: Luke Istomin www.lukeistomin.com
Australia’s singing and dancing sweetheart Hugh Jackman has taken Hollywood by storm. Recently, the video Hugh Jackman posted on Instagram of himself dead lifting180 kilograms went viral.
A recent survey conducted by online sportswear retailer TheActive.com.au found that44 per cent of men wanted their body to resemble Hugh Jackman’s. ‘‘He’s 45 years old, yet he deadlifted 180 kilos of barbells as we all saw on Instagram recently. Hugh’s huge and on top of that healthy and successful --- who wouldn’t want that?’’ said Jordan Miller, General Manager of TheActive. com.au, of the results. Second choice was fellow Aussie actor Chris Hemsworth at 14 per cent. The man behind the body, personal trainer Luke Istomin, who trained Jackman in preparation for blockbuster The Wolverine, has shared his tips so you too can get a bod like Hugh.
1 BE CONSISTENT Make sure you’ve been doing some form of consistent training for a few months before undertaking a strenuous routine. You need to be clear of any heart or circulatory problems, major injuries or mobility issues that will inhibit your training. Start slowly into the routine if new and work your way up to the bigger weights and harder sessions. You won’t get ripped in one week, but you can put yourself out of action for a few months if you try and be a superhero at your first session.
2 FEED THE MACHINE Make sure you’ve been doing some form of consistent training for a few months before undertaking a strenuous routine.
3 LIFT HEAVY AND SPRINT FAST Give it your all every single set, otherwise you’re wasting your time. Treat each one like it’s your last one of the workout. Aim for nine to twelve reps every set; you should be going into muscular failure after each. Try and find a workout partner/spotter to really push each other to train harder and longer. The aim is to get your muscles stimulated and your blood pumping. Aim for 5 weights sessions per week lasting no longer than 50 mins. Squat, Deadlift, press and pull. There is no need to overcomplicate things. You should be looking to increase your weights by 2% per week for the first 10 weeks.
4 KEEP YOUR CARDIO SHORT Keep your cardio to short bursts of High Intensity Interval Training. No more than 20 mins three times a week is needed if you can go to maximal effort for each block. If you feel extremely uncomfortable or come close to passing out, that will be 100%, anything less and you’re just working at a larger capacity than normal.
5 STAY HYDRATED Drink a minimum of 2.5L of water per day. Dehydration leads to decreased performance in the gym, boardroom and the bedroom. The human body is composed of 50-75 per cent water (depending
upon sex and body type) and water is vital for the proper functioning of every organ. Water is vital, it’s responsible for carrying nutrients and oxygen to cells (our blood is 95 per cent water), regulating body temperature, lubricating joints, as well as cleansing toxins and waste from our bodies. The human brain alone is composed of 75 per cent water, while our skin is 70 per cent water. That is why some of the first effects of dehydration are headaches and dry skin.
6 SLEEP IS KING Keep your cardio to short bursts of High Intensity Interval Training. No more than 20 mins three times a week is needed if you can go to maximal effort for each block. If you feel extremely uncomfortable or come close to passing out, that will be 100%, anything less and you’re just working at a larger capacity than normal.
IF YOU FAIL TO PLAN, YOU PLAN TO FAIL.
7 USE HIGH QUALITY FISH OILS Omega 3 oils have been shown to help lose body fat. Use around 1 gm per % point of body fat you have for the first 8 weeks, then drop it by half after that.
8 QUALITY TRAINING SHOES Notice how I didn’t say sneakers here, but training shoes. Grab some shoes that are specific to your needs. You won’t want to be squatting or deadlifting in some flyweight shoes with little or no support. And conversely, you don’t want to be going for some sprint sessions in some stiff soled and heavy weight training shoes. As a rule of thumb, most running shoes tend to have a four to five hundred kilometer life span in them before the cushioning or support material breaks down and becomes ineffective. Your feet, and entire body will be grateful for your small investment.
9 PLAN TO SUCCEED How many times have we all wished that we could have the body like Hugh’s? Well here’s a secret. He actually is human and doesn’t have super hero powers! Yep, the secret to Hugh’s great physique is his work ethic and consistency. He still went out to premiers and social functions with people around him drinking alcohol and nibbling on canapés, but he chose not to and kept his goal firmly in sight. To go to the next level, you have to plan your cheat meals weeks in advance. He trained six days per week with a scheduled rest day depending on his schedule. You absolutely have to have a plan to follow and stick to it to be successful, whether it is in the gym or in life.

At the present (young) age where most of us are, it’s perfectly excusable to be unsure of where you want to end up. The best thing is to jump on the path to a broader goal early on. Perhaps there is a facet of the fashion industry that excites you? A field you think you can offer something to and that’s where your daily motivation and drive comes from? Maybe it’s the fast-paced movement, lack of certainty as a creative or the huge potential on the business side of things that excites you. Either way, the fashion industry draws so many people from all aspects of society, usually in all black getups into a dimly lit packed room offering free champagne in return for their approval on a soon-to-be-publicly-released project. There are three industry tips I like to refer back to, to join those people in that room. We’ll refer to them as the three P’s.
PORTFOLIO In the present age, the first way to gain a foot into this industry is usually by having something to show. Poor-quality, self produced work is better than nothing at all. It demonstrates a keen interest to the extent that you’re willing to work on your own and create your own opportunities, which is what holds so many people back from entering their dream jobs. Portfolios also show what you could be bringing with a personal spin. Work on your social media and creative platforms. It’s almost impossible to stress the importance of, and maintaining a presence on Instagram, Vimeo, Flickr etc. on whatever the people in your desired field(s) frequent the most for various reasons. More times than enough, these are also used by industry insiders to scout people from which they can offer opportunities in. No one is going to ask you for anything unless you are willing to put yourself out in the first instance. Keep in mind that an easily accessible portfolio of your work is the best. I’ve had photographer friends
gain work over time simply by organising their own shoots and posting on social media platform. Eventually they gained an audience and eventually the industry came calling for their talents.
PEOPLE These are the ones that offer you the opportunities, some of which are not so evidently visible. More questions. Do you like fashion photography, styling or simply want to be one of those people with a headset calling the shots backstage at fashion shows? There was also a way those people got there you can also aim for. Depending on your chosen path there are a number of industry insiders (or gateways as I like to view them) accessible to you. Your greatest asset on the employment side is to be at liberty to offer to perform unpaid, pro-bono or an internshiptype work. So who are these targets and how does one sneak their way into the their circles? One thing to do is familiarise yourself with situations where you might “accidentally” bump into them. In your local cities there are a number of places and events where they hang out and can make yourself known. It’s all about developing those basic networking skills not just in this situation but they can readily be applied into any existing industry. Without advocating criminal stalking, immerse yourself into the scene and don’t be afraid to reach out, however let your intentions be evident. There is always someone who knows someone who is a friend of another person. If not being a means to an end, at least they may point you in the right direction. The best part is that like wise, industry professionals are always on the prowl for someone who shows interest in their work. Maybe even bring up their past work and offer a recount of something you really like that they were involved in. It’ll do two things 1.) really surprise them and/or 2.) inflate their egos to the point of wanting to tell you more.
PERSEVERE Perseverance is the most personal of all three. It is the one you can have the most control over. You might need to make some lifechanging decisions and give up some things for now (primarily time, money, a social life, or a combination of all three). As an observer on the sidelines myself, looking in and attempting to forge his own path too, it’s evident that the fashion industry can be harsh one to exist in. The financial rewards are hardly present unless if you are able to attain some level or fame/notoriety and even then being financially secure is never guaranteed. On more than a few occasions giving up might feel like an easier option. In the same context, recognise when there is a dead end coming up and you have the chance to move unto something with a more viable outlook. Knowing one’s limitations in the industry and what you won’t do / can’t do / not willing to give up is going to be a huge deal, especially as the scope of your work develops. What are your personal strengths and how can you play on these? What are your creative talents? And last but not least, fake it till you make it. How do I know it works? It’s exactly what I’m doing right now by writing this inspirational passage.

MONO-VETO
Photographer: Elisabeth Willis www.elisabethwillis.com Designer: Michael McAtomney Designer michaelmcatomney@gmail.com
Michael McAtomney’s designs are the epitome of men’s style with his innate fashion sense and keen eye for tailored made clothes. This ex-miner has made fashion his bread and butter and dreams of taking his label ‘Veto’ around the world.
Previously studying Fashion and French at Queensland University of Technology, Michael took to a traveller’s life seeing all that Europe has to offer and has only recently reconnected with his home in Brisbane to work on his collection ‘Mono-Veto’. Being a massive fan of the wearable art movement, Michael’s collection MonoVeto embodies costume design techniques that were inspired by the American Prohibition of the 1920’s. The collection mirrors this error perfectly with the clothes looking battered and worn however also looking like the most precious thing the model owns. Ultimately the collection tells a story and provides enough details in the clothes alone to inspire imagination. He has aimed this collection of European men aged between 25-35 years and specifically is aiming at a boutique market of men who aren’t fussed with mainstream fast fashion but are able to appreciate the uniqueness of clothes. Michael admits that this is the first time he was able to let loose and shoot for the stars. He was able to play around with different shapes and exaggerate the volume of patterns and how they fall on the body. Instead of following a strict way of designing he has now branched out to explore draping and is seeing where this takes him.
Michael describes his own personal style as a very tailored look and says that a clean tailor-made shirt will never disappoint in an outfit. Over the next five years he hopes to successfully launch a few more collections and launch his brand on to the realms of social media, which he hopes will solidify Veto as a major destination for fashion. GO VAN GO
EXPRESSIONISM
It’s become common knowledge that Brisbane produces some of the most gritty, loud and inspiring rock music in the country and Go Van Go are a band which certainly tick all of these boxes. Explosive riffs and undeniable choruses strike up an immediate intensity that conjures up images of late night rock’n’roll blaring out of Fortitude Valley clubs to hoards of beer drenched gig-goers. ‘Known Better’ is the lead single from Go Van Go’s upcoming EP Kill City, and acts as the perfect calling card for the bands hardhitting yet accessible brand of rock’n’roll.

Just a little about myself. I was born on June the 7th 1992, in the city of Brisbane, Australia. My heritage is made up of both Greek and Cypriot. I have a passion for soccer, food and fashion and I am probably the shyest person you will ever meet until we start talking about those 3 things. My work consists of making coffee and managing a coffee shop. However on my days off I tend to search for cool cafes and will always take photos for my blog. There are a few reasons why I started my Instagram and blog and the main one being Mariano Di Vaio. He is one of the men’s wear blogger/influences in the world and I stumbled upon his Instagram profile about a year ago. From then on I started following all the top bloggers around the world, as I aspired to one day be like them. I have always loved fashion and being well dressed but I never thought about blogging. I am still very new to it all and my blog is still in the early
stages. Compared to anywhere that I have travelled or seen, Brisbane, Australia is very much behind in the fashion industry, most people are too scared to wear something different and out there and I only hope maybe one day I will be able influence the people around me to more confidently dress with elegance and style, not just a pair of baggy jeans and a t-shirt. There are not many greater feelings than when you are wearing a well-tailored suit and just feeling good about yourself. My style is different to anyone I know around me, I get a lot of my ideas from men’s wear bloggers from all over the world and put it together my own way with a bit of flare. Most of the clothing and accessories I wear are inexpensive because we all know how expensive it can be trying to have a new outfit for every occasion. I don’t really have any particular favourite brands, if I see something and I like it, I will buy it.

Hello this is Saif, Founder of MenStyle1.com, 22 years old guy from Iraq who lives in Romania since 2002, I study medicine and I’m in my 5th year in UMF Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest. First I started this blog as a normal Tumblr inspirational blog, it was as vslove.tumblr.com. Later on my friends asked me to make a website related to mens fashion and mens style because they were calling me “the fashion guy”, I started thinking about it and I said to make to make it because previously when I was 15-16-17 years I was working as a SEO agent & Web Designer. So I started in February 2012 with changing my blog URL from vslove.tumblr.com to MenStyle1.com from that day everything started. I started working on my new website I worked hard on SEO and I made it on the first google pages for ‘men fashion blog’ ‘men style’ …
later on I changed the design and I made it look very simple and attractive for the viewers who care for Men Fashion. And that’s how I started my site, now after receiving everyday approx 10-20 messages that ask me how to combine clothes or what to wear, there is an idea for the site by making iOS&Android app to help every guy out there to know how to combine clothes/how to look fully sharp. So I want to make menstyle1. com as a company that helps men what and how to wear the clothes and how to make them look really attractive, later on we seek to have a Personal Brand Name for mens clothes. I was always keen on classical men style and find it the most attractive style a man could fit in, and observed a remarkable interest by the public and that is what my website offers to the viewers, and this type of style helped me achieve this level with MenStyle1.com

If someone were to ask me 2 years ago to make a list of the things I enjoyed, I promise you that writing wasn’t even a consideration. My list wouldn’t actually have been very long…probably just the words “watching my wife shower” written over and over again. Having failed English in high school I genuinely didn’t think writing was an option for me…I apparently didn’t grasp the language.
I continued to write for Cinemazzi for a few months, after which I decided to try starting my own blog so that I could have the freedom to write about whatever topic I wanted. I still review movies for my friend though because I not only still enjoy it but I feel I owe her so much for opening my eyes to this world…and I love free popcorn.
I started The Uneducated Opinion with the concept of just a “my Even after the great life altering two cents” style blog but quickly English failure of 2000, 12ish found that my main interest in years later I was a 28-year-old, 9 writing centered around my famito 5 factory worker, failed musily. a place of secrets and lost dreams
LA isn’t what I expected at all. Coming off the plane at LAX I wanted my subsequent month in the land of “fame excess” to be 100% glamorous. At least, that’s what Miley Cyrus had me believing. Indeed, I was greeted with an incredible city filled with all kinds of cultural treasures… however, there was a side of Los Angeles that is not presented to the world; a city with a well-known secret. My representatives told me that I needed to get “my ass over to LA,” when someone says that with as much conviction as was told to me I was on a plane within a week. I was lucky enough to meet with industry professionals, the people that make the entertainment industry run. Ironically enough I stayed on Hollywood Boulevard for my first
week, the “Walk of Fame”. Maybe one day I will be placed next to Ben Stiller’s surprisingly massive hands. My first night my senses overloaded from the bright lights, street performers and the bustling atmosphere of equally excited people. Due to the fact the airline lost my luggage, I walked down to purchase my toiletries in my pyjamas, at my feet the star-speckled street were names that I had grown up admiring.
I was informed by locals that what I expected exists in Beverly Hills, more specifically Rodeo Drive. The strip sparkled – like it was smiling at me. Super cars, luxury shops and the largest collection of premium suits that I had experienced in my life. This street alone is a reason you should go to Los Angeles. The quality of the boutique stores around Rodeo were something that I had not experienced in Australia, yet the price tag didn’t match. These beautiful bespoke woollen suits had incredible value. From my experience, never assume what the city will offer you for you will be surprise you can come across. Alex Fitzalan www.instagram.com/alexfitzalan Editor: Isabella Argyros

WHY BEARD GARDENS MIGHT BECO
OME THE NEW HIPSTER OBSESSION
Just when we thought the beard’s day in the sun was finally over a new name for people without facial hair emerged - women. Long gone are the days when growing a bushy beard was considered a rebellious act reserved for outcasts and bums. From the traditional up kept and trimmed, to the downward bizarre, beards are once again considered a symbol of uber masculinity and a way to express oneself. Talking about expression, wasn’t it the beard that rocked the stage of Eurovision and not so much the song? I think so!
Now that shaving days are behind most men and facial hair is creeping back on, some people employ all their creativity and imagination to stand out from the crowd and I am not even talking about Hugh Jackman’s awkward moustache, or Zach Galifianakis’s bush (although in the context of this article, “Between Two Ferns” acquires a whole new meaning). One thing is for sure, all you hipsters out there are going
to love, what you are about to see!
It is no secret that besides flowers and chocolates, girls
also dig beautiful bearded men. But what happens when you mash these together? There is only one way to find out! Meet Pierce Thiot who is behind Will It Beard. He became famous for sticking common household objects in his beard as a part of his wife, Tracy Thiot’s photography project. In fact, he became so famous, he ‘blossomed’ with nearly 68K Instagram followers in less than 7 months’ time. You can spot all sorts of objects in his beard from lit matches and uncooked noodles, to little green men and flowers.
It is in fact the flowers that created a wave of mixed reactions and set a new floral frenzy. According to Pierce Thiot “the combination of the romantic and stereotypically ‘feminine’ nature of flowers with the uber masculine connotation of facial hair creates a sweet and charming juxtaposition.” You be the judge of whether that is true. Here are a few images of other men who’ve picked up the new trend. But is there any reasonable explanation as to why men started popping peonies and forget-me-nots out of their
beards? Read carefully before you decide to grow a mighty bush! A new study published in Biology Letters suggested that beards are only perceived as attractive when they are uncommon. According to the study male and female participants judged heavy stubble and full beards more attractive when presented in treatments where beards were rare. So, if sticking daisies in your beard is the price to pay for being unique and more attractive, so be it! Do beard gardens work in real life? I know that from the pictures it seems like you need a professional landscapers, or
florists to pull off this look, but this is not the case. Not at all – you only need a little bit of imagination, bushy beard and quality flora. No stem knots and twisty ties needed as long as you work with smaller flowers.
Now go arrange a garden that will make your mama proud! A real life street experiment showed that the beard garden can hold up in real life, although it doesn’t grow on everyone, if you know what I mean. Prepare to feel the judging stares of the less cooler kids in your
neighbourhood. Finally a few words to all the girls out there... If you have never thought that a flower adorned beard can sweep you off your feet, try to imagine a handsome guy, walking down the street with a bunch of your favourite flowers stuck in his beard. Yes, in that microscopic moment you’ll know he’s the one and if you are lucky enough, he will share with you every bit of his secret garden. Besides, nothing says ‘I love you’ better than roses popping out of his face, right?

She is a blogger, a freelance writer and a technical marketer for Paul’s Gardening and Landscaping. She loves to travel, to devour in classics and to enjoy all life’s adventures. Above all she dreams of having a family of four, a Welsh Corgi dog and a big house in the mountains with a garden where she can grow her organic food. www.ihatecleaning.com.au
