Make Over for the New Year at Hairdue
Owned by veterans of the military and run by veterans of the trade, Hairdue Salon and Spa in Cumming is a full service “New York style salon with southern flair.” The salon and spa is celebrating its 10 year anniversary. From serving the nation to serving clients and serving the community, Mitch and Dot Kemptner, owners of Hairdue, both served in the US ARMY collectively for over 23 years and have made Forsyth County home for the past 17. Fresh into retirement, Mitch and Dot wanted to fulfill a lifelong dream of owning their own business. They founded Hairdue, and went all in. “We’ve come a long way,” remarked Dot. “In the beginning all Mitch knew about salons is that I went to one on a regular basis.” He surrounded himself with the best Master Stylists, Advanced Color Specialists and Special Occasion Designers offering over 50 years of combined experience and a floor manager dedicated to ensuring your visit is an experience that you won’t soon forget. “It’s a lot of fun. Every day I look for ways to better serve our clients while maintaining a professional and fun working environment for our staff. All of our stylists take pride in going the extra mile to focus on each client,” added Mitch. “Our mission is simple: To meet and exceed all of your expectations. It is our belief that you have many salons to choose from, so when you come through our door, our goal is to do everything we can to ensure that your visit is all that you expected, and that we earn your return.”
And they do just that...

Hairdue is a Keratin Complex salon, specializing in Moroccan Oil, Color Proof as well as Keratin Complex Colour and products.”
The Kemptners ensure that Hairdue plays an active role in the community as well, donating thousands of dollars in services and products to charitable organizations. They also regularly support local high school sports teams (their three children graduated from South Forsyth High School). “We believe in giving back to the community that has made us so successful, and we continue to find new ways to reach out every year,” Dot explained. Dr. Charlie DeCook joins Northside Total Joint Specialists
Advanced Joint Surgery Specialists is pleased to announce that Dr. Charlie DeCook, a joint replacement specialist has joined its center. Dr. DeCook specializes in anterior hip replacement surgery, an exciting new technique for hip replacement surgery. This approach involves a single, very short incision into the patient’s leg and is performed by entering the front of the hip as opposed to the back of the hip. This procedure allows the surgeon to expose the hip without cutting muscle which means faster recovery time and less pain. One of the most exciting aspects of this approach is that it significantly reduces the risk of dislocation, one of the complications that can happen with hip replacements.

Forsyth County 2014 Crime Index
As Forsyth County’s population increases, many have wondered if the crime rate would increase with it. The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office has recently learned of new statistics released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation that correlates Metro Atlanta County’s population with its Crime Index. These statistics show the likeliness of each citizen of being the victim of a serious crime. Forsyth County’s Crime Index is only 0.79%, lower than all surrounding counties. This number has decreased each year for the past couple of years, even with how much the population in Forsyth County has increased. A combination of factors contribute to our improvements, including efficient deployment of resources, the involvement of our public through active communication and most importantly the hard work and diligent efforts of the men and women of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. One factor that is believed to have contributed to this downward trend in crime is the reduction of backlogged warrants. When taking office in the beginning of 2013, Sheriff Duane K. Piper inherited a backlog of about 5000 outstanding warrants. By restructuring the agency and tasking more deputies with serving these warrants, this number was cut in half within a few years. This quickly reduced the amount of people suspected of committing crimes out on the streets. The Sheriff’s Office also credits the reduction in crime to the Forsyth County citizens. Through social media, increased

community programs, and a transparent approach to the release of information, the agency worked toward open communication with the citizens of Forsyth County. Many crimes have been quickly solved by tips from followers of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page after seeing posts about the incident. Wanted people, who had previously been in hiding, have turned themselves in after being shown on the Facebook page. Forsyth County deputies have a vested interest in their community and are proud of these new numbers. They continue to work hard to maintain the way of life that makes Forsyth County great.

by expressing his feelings through an inanimate object in a heartfelt and surprisingly poignant way. Through the films unique premise and storytelling structure the audience will come to care about the doll lovingly named Bianca, Lars himself and the quirky cast of supporting townsfolk. Take note of the subtle musical score by David Torn which is instrumental in caring about the characters as well as the story in a way that could have felt manipulative but never was. Ryan Gosling plays Lars Lindstrom in a role that requires him to shed his sex appeal status. As a result the film is that much stronger for his presence by defying his usual audiences’ expectations. His work here as well as in 2006’s Half Nelson and 2010’s Blue Valentine shows why he is considered one of the strongest actors of this generation. Stellar yet understated performances by Emily Mortimer, Paul Schneider and Patricia Clarkson as well as by “the real girl” Bianca and the other “real girl” Kelli Garner as Margo help round out this fantastic cast.As crazy as it may seem there is a whole subgenre of films out there where people use dolls or objects to cope with different or difficult situations in life. Seek out 2003’s Love Object (6 out of 10) starring Desmond Harrington for a Horror take, or 2013’s Her (8 out of 10) starring Joaquin Phoenix for a realistic prophetic Sci-Fi slant on the subject.
“Lars and the Real Girl” (2007) It’s important to note what this movie is not as well as what it is. It is not just a story about a sad, crazy man-child who buys a lifelike doll on the internet in order to live out his twisted fantasies, which is what some people may believe based on the premise alone. What the movie is instead is an achingly real examination of a damaged and introverted individual who seeks to supplant his feelings of isolation and detachment from the world around him

Hop on the Raider Ride!
In March of this year, United Way of Forsyth County established a committee to discuss the benefits of mentoring and tutoring. Our goal was to identify areas where we could work to increase the number of mentors and tutors for academically at-risk students in the county. Our original charge was to focus on strategies at the elementary and middle school level. Once the committee began meeting, and after many months of discussion and research, the committee decided that for many high school students, tutoring outside of school hours was not an option. Transportation was the barrier. We know that extra instructional time provides students the opportunity to catch-up or stay on track to graduate on-time. We also know that the graduation gap between lower income students and their middle/high income peers is approximately 10 percentage points. We also believe when students are engaged in school activities, they are more likely to stay in school. The committee came up with the idea of having a “late bus” for students at North Forsyth High School. By providing this transportation alternative, students would be able to get extra instructional time, allow them to attend club meetings, participate in sporting activities, etc. Once the board at United Way received and approved the proposal and budget for this pilot program, Julie Benvenuto, Assistant Administrator scheduled the first bus. This collaborative effort between United Way and NFHS has already shown promise since the first student elected to use the service in late September. Already there are 14 student riders on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students use the Raider Ride for a variety of reasons such as: n Training for their military goals – a student uses one of her days to run track and the other for tutoring. Some have also participated in drill practice. n n n
The Tutoring Center provides help in math, science, English, Spanish and Social Studies. Students are able to participate in the Writing Lab.
Several students use one day for tutoring and one day for club activities.

The counselors, administrators, and teachers are referring new students to the Raider Connection Center every day, most of whom require the Raider Ride to get home. Because of the extended school hours, the students also receive a snack right after school before the extra hours begin. Julie Benvenuto says, “I have also seen an unexpected benefit come out of this program. Students who often do not have a peer group are bonding while at the tutoring center and on the bus. This has sparked a positive social group where learning and trying hard is the cool thing to do.” The Raider Ride is one example of breaking down barriers so young people can succeed. Ride Raiders Ride! This is just one way your United Way contributions touch and improve lives daily. Thank you for being the inspiration to others!

Mint Indian Bistro An Indian Treat! It’s not often that I think of Indian food as my go-to choice when looking for a place to go out to eat. That has recently changed, now that Mint Indian Bistro has opened its doors in Cumming. The place is hip and lively, the food is tasty and the service is on target. It has a friendly style that makes the visit a pleasant one. I decided to try the restaurant with friends who know about Indian food, as that is their heritage. I figured they would guide me on food choices, though the folks at Mint are able to do so just as well. My first taste was Samosa, a savory, flaky pastry stuffed with spicy cumin scented potatoes. Chaat is another alternative, served on spicy garbanzo bean stew with sev (crunchy chickpea noodles), onions, cilantro, topped with tamarind and green chutneys and sweetened yogurt. The Paneer Roll, fresh grilled paneer (Indian cheese), cucumber, onions, dusted with chaat masala, and served with two butter buns and green chutney was quite tasteful. I was encouraged to try a Tandoori dish, where chicken breast is marinated in a spicy sauce and cooked on skewers in a tandoori, a clay oven, with mesquite charcoal, it was spicy and tasty. Wheat, lentils, pigeon peas, and coriander – all are ingredients that are used in creating the flavors unique to Indian cuisine. Given the range of diversity in soil type, climate, culture, ethnic group and occupations, these cuisines vary significantly from each other and use locally available spices, herbs, vegetables and fruits. Indian food is also heavily influenced by religious and cultural choices and traditions. If you are interested in adding a bit of spice to your culinary experience, give Mint Indian Bistro a try.

Just as in business, many life truths get played out daily on sports fields and courts all over the world. Perfection is impossible, follow through is essential – it’s how you rebound that matters! In baseball, professionals can make a career out of hitting the ball 3 out of 10 times they try and get paid huge for doing so. How would you react at work if you only got something “right” every 3 times you tried it?
THE REBOUND The Key to Success
In basketball they measure field goal percentage by how many times you shoot the ball and how many times did goes into the basket. You’d think that THIS statistic would be the most important key to winning the game, but it isn’t. What is? Rebound percentage! You can be playing another team with a higher field goal percentage, but if your rebounding is better you have MORE shots on goal. Those additional chances can win the game.
Since perfection “isn’t possible in
business either, our follow through and rebound ability is just as critical. How well are YOU rebounding?
”
We still need to learn the lessons from missed shots – drops in sales, staff retention, loss of customers. But, what we choose to DO with what we learn is the key. Instead of focusing on the missed goals from the past, we must focus on the next shot with enthusiasm and determination.
Since we won’t get it right every time, we have to follow the ball and EXPECT that a certain percentage of the time we’re NOT going to hit the mark. The key is to position ourselves to be right there to catch the ball if it DOES miss, change our angle and shoot again.
In her book “The Bounce Back Book” Karen Salmansohn gives this assignment when we struggle with rebounding, “Whenever you’re tempted to dwell in the past repeat this single word: Forward.”
Since perfection isn’t possible in business either, our follow through and rebound ability is just as critical. How well are YOU rebounding?
Using the word “forward” in business or in life can keep you focused onward to give you the speed and strength to rebound and win the game.

BOOK Review
BOOK b y Kristin Shaw REVIEW
“Mothern Through the Mothering Through the Darkness
Darkness” Edited by Jessica Smock & Stephanie Sprenger Edited byreview Jessica Smock A book by Kristin Shaw & Stephanie Sprenger
If you know a mother, chances are that you know someone who has experienced a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder like Postpartum Depression. The non-profit resource Postpartum Progress estimates that 1 MILLION women each year (at least 1 in 7) will struggle with a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder in the U.S. alone. And still, the stigma remains, and not nearly enough women get the help they need. Motherhood can be filled with joy and wonder, but for some, the unexpected and stunning onset of Postpartum Depression, Postpartum Anxiety, and other mood disorders throws everything off balance with fear and shame and guilt. Almost ten years ago, actress/model Brooke Shields did her best to blow the lid
off her struggles with PPD in her book Down Came the Rain. Today, more women are talking about it and diminishing the shame that accompanies the symptoms and diagnoses of various PMAD conditions, including Postpartum Depression, Postpartum Anxiety, Postpartum Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The new anthology Mothering Through the Darkness (edited by Stephanie Sprenger and Jessica Smock) explores the starkest honesty and deepest introspection about what birth and hormones can do to our bodies and minds from the perspectives of 35 different women. The essays are rich with raw pain and vivid descriptions of what each woman experienced through PPD and other mood disorders, and also braided with hope and strength. Each story is a feast of words on a very tough topic. This book is not just for survivors of an illness that strikes so many women and steals time from their new motherhood. It’s for anyone who is a mother, wants to be a mother, or is a friend/mother/sister to someone who is experiencing motherhood for the first or tenth time. Mothering Through the Darkness is not just about postpartum mood disorders. It’s
about love. Love for our children, love for our spouses, and love for other mothers who have been or are about to go through something similar. Reading their stories honors their journey and helps to being PPD out of the darkness and into the light, once and for all.

I’m not talking about the movie I walked into my son’s room. Carson is 11 years old and he had just rearranged all his “stuff”. He was so excited and said “Mom what do you think?” Picture this…his bed was perpendicular in front of the window, it also bummed up against one of his closet doors so the door could not open, and his night stand was now in the middle of the room. The only thing that made sense to me was his desk in the opposite corner. As an avid HGTV (Home and Garden television) watcher, this was ALL WRONG!
You can’t …well shouldn’t block the window like that, it looks terrible! This is what I was thinking but rather than crush his spirit, I asked him a few questions about his bedroom re- design. Me: “Why did you place your bed in front of the window?” Carson: “Because when I wake up, I can look out the window and see the sunrise.” Me: “Wow! That sounds like a great way to start your day. Ok, now what about the fact that the closet door is blocked”? (It’s one of
those bi-fold types, so there are two sides that open. ) Carson: “I can still get the one side open and reach what I need.” Me: “ok, hummm…” Well, everything he said made sense but STILL, it looked terrible! As I stood there evaluating the situation and seeing the pride in his eyes, I asked myself, “does this really matter?” Does it really matter that his bed placement is not what I would do? Maybe I don’t think it looks “right” but this is one of those situations that I decided to “Let it Go”. How about you? Maybe your children insist on wearing shorts when it’s 40 degrees outside, your husband cuts down some bushes that now look hideous…oh this is so therapeutic.. I don’t know about you but there are plenty of times when I reflect on my viewpoint and ponder the idea… why do I believe my way is better? That’s when I step back and determine that maybe this is one of those times to Let it Go. What scenarios or situations are there in your life? If it really doesn’t matter then try it…just let It go.

gift THE
I
t’s the time of year when thoughts turn to shopping, wrapping, and stowing presents under the tree. It’s great fun for some, and dreaded by others. Sadly, for many, it has become just a social habit, propelled by the momentum of custom. The good news is that we can give the experience new zest, and greater depth and meaning simply by really understanding what it is that we are doing.
OF
GIVING by Michael Brennan
Giving to others is a most civilized gesture. Like the power of imagination, it is one of the things that distinguish man from the rest of the animals, and it is a proof of that we contain the spark of our Creator. Giving is a way to externalize the sense of love or esteem we have for others—to transform the contents of the heart into a concrete symbol that we pass to another, as a flame passes between two candles. It is done, or should be, without expectation of reward or return. It is the giving over of a piece of the most irreplaceable thing we have—a part of our lives. It is the humble gesture of those whose greatest treasure trove lies within the soul. The best gifts do not come from the mall or the jeweler. They come from our minds and hearts and hands. Any parent can tell you that even the most humble, hand-lettered birthday card from a child is more precious than a dozen bought at the store. One Christmas thirty-odd years ago, my sister gave me a silk shirt, such as were in vogue with young people at the time and very expensive, which she had made by hand. I was thunderstruck. The fit and workmanship were absolutely perfect, and I stood there for a good while trying to calculate the time and effort she spent to make it so. I was also aware that I was totally unworthy of such a thing, since I was at the age where I spent a good deal of my waking hours being the gnat in her soup. It was as much a lesson as a gift, and it spoke as much of her character as it did her skill with a needle. I no longer have the shirt, but I’ll always have the memory of that day. There are many things we can give to others. There is the gift of love and friendship; of faith, patience or trust. We can pause to put our shoulder to someone else’s wheel, or to carry his burden for a while. It was Immanuel Kant’s idea that the only deeds with moral worth were those done from a sense of duty to fellow man. I humbly suggest that this could stand improvement. The duty is to one’s self, since being wholly human involves passing on something of value to others we deem worthy. One path to personal growth is to make giving a year-round habit, and not just a once-a-year obligation. And remember that what gives the gift life is that little something of yourself.n 26 www.myforsyth.com

TO YOUR HEART!
Revisiting Risk Factors – Updates in Hypertension and Diabetes By Narendra Singh MD
I recently returned from the American Heart Association Annual Scientific Sessions in Orlando, Florida. Each year at these meetings new advances in cardiovascular medicine are presented and discussed. Two major new stories emerged that I think are important as we work towards preventing heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular death. A study sponsored by our National Institute of Health entitled SPRINT looked at individuals over the age of 50 who had hypertension and other risk factors. They randomized them to the standard strategy of lowering systolic blood pressure (top number) to below 140 mmHg versus a target of 120 mmHg. In September of this year, this 9361 patient study was ended early because of a significant benefit in favor of the lower blood pressure target. Patients had been followed-up for roughly three years and in the lower blood pressure group, death was reduced by 27%, heart failure was reduced by 38% and heart attacks and strokes also trended in a favorable direction. Intensive blood pressure lowering as conducted in this trial did result in some side effects. There was a higher risk of fainting, kidney injury and electrolyte abnormalities however the net benefit clearly favored the lower blood pressure target.
The second major study was entitled EMPA- REG OUTCOMES. This study, coordinated out of Canada, looked at a new class of diabetes medications called SGLT-2 inhibitors. Drugs in this class allow diabetics to release excess glucose through the urine. In doing so the patient’s blood pressure is reduced and there is a modest weight loss of about 5-10 pounds. Empagliflozin (Jardiance) lowers blood sugar to the same degree as other diabetes medications. This 7020 patient study was also terminated early after just 3 years because of a significant benefit in favor of using the new medication versus conventional diabetes drugs. For the first time ever a diabetes drug has shown a survival benefitreducing death by 32%, heart failure by 35% but with no significant difference in terms of heart attacks or strokes. While these results are impressive, the challenge will be affordability. If you have diabetes, first start with improved dietary measures and inexpensive metformin. If the diabetes control is not optimal then at this point it is worthwhile to discuss with your physician using the new agent as second line therapy to improve your long-term survival.n
What does this mean for us? The first message is that we should be more aggressive in terms of our lifestyle and dietary approaches to maintaining a low blood pressure. Restricting salt intake, moderating alcohol, exercising regularly and avoiding medications that can raise blood pressure such as the anti-inflammatory agents will help us prevent hypertension in the first place. However, if you already have hypertension discuss these results with your doctor and see if the more intensive target is right for you since it has the potential to save lives!

FIGHTING
LUNG CANCER: IMMEDIATE BENEFITS TO QUITTING SMOKING By Dr. Howard Silverboard
Smoking accounts for the vast majority of lung cancer cases, and is also responsible for most cancers affecting the mouth and throat. However, it is not an easy task to get rid of that gnawing tobacco craving, especially after several failed attempts. In fact, about half of people who try to quit smoking fail during the first week. Fortunately, many people have successfully quit — and you can too. Benefits start in just 20 minutes. That’s the time it takes to see a drop in blood pressure and pulse rate, according to the American Cancer Society. The risk of suffering a heart attack decreases within 24 hours. Your ability to taste and smell improves within 48 hours. Two weeks after quitting, lung function improves. After a month, you will notice less coughing, your sinuses will be clearer, and you will feel more energized.
Benefits down the road are even greater. Studies show that one year after quitting, an ex-smoker’s risk of developing heart disease is half that of a smoker’s. Within
QUIT SMOKING PROGRAM: Northside Hospital holds Smoking Cessation classes that offer participants tips on how to quit, cope with withdrawal symptoms, manage stress, avoid weight gain, and more. All sessions are facilitated by trained Northside Hospital staff at Atlanta, Forsyth and Cherokee campuses. For more information or to register, call 404-780-7653 or email smokingcessation@northside.com.
five years, the risks of dying from lung cancer or developing cancer of the mouth, throat, or esophagus are half that of a smoker’s. After 10 years of stopping, an ex-smoker’s risks for developing lung cancer or heart disease drop to that of a lifelong nonsmoker. When it comes to enjoying better health, the sooner you quit, the sooner you’ll start a healthier lifestyle. Lung Cancer Screening: Another key development in the fight against lung cancer is the advent of an effective screening program. Early detection of lung cancer is effective in improving the odds in the fight against the nation’s leading cause of cancer-related death. If you have smoked the equivalent of one pack of cigarettes per day for 30 years or more, have quit smoking within the past 15 years, and are between the ages of 54-79, then you should consider enrolling in the Northside Cancer Institute’s Lung Cancer Screening Program. For more information, call 404-531-4444.

LIVING HAPPY WITH LESS
d
by Allie Costley
Learn To Be Rich In A Different Way Recently, I came across an article that got me thinking. It originated from a video on YouTube titled, “A Rich Life With Less Stuff.” It was here that Ryan Nicodemus and Joshua Fields Millburn changed my perspective of wealth and happiness. I would even say it changed my perspective of life. It’s a thing called, “minimalism.” I began thinking, as a college student, of all the money I’ve spent eating out, buying extra toiletries and paying more for the name brand. Though I already consider myself cautious with money, I realized just how much waste I have. I don’t need a vast majority of the things I own. And it got me thinking further… Why do we become so attached to things? I understand a family heirloom or a precious gift from a spouse, but why do we strive to own the fancy cars and spend money on frivolous, pretty things “just because”? Does it give us a sense of worth? A sense of accomplishment? The other day I was browsing a yard sale group on Facebook when I came across a beautiful Coach purse for $35. My, what a deal! Just think of all the money I’m saving if I buy this instead of one from the store. I began typing a response when suddenly it hit me, “Allie, you wouldn’t have bought it in the store because you don’t need it.” I think we’ve been brainwashed, from an early age, to believe that success and happiness stems from our ability to buy things… That if we buy more than we need then we’ll be okay. We pile ourselves in debt, creating stress in our families, our marriages and ourselves. We rush, crazed, on Black Friday into the nearest Kohls or Walmart to grab the latest deals, sometimes even killing others (extreme cases) in our attempt to do so. What have we let ourselves become? Why have we let “things” overpower our desire to live simply and with contentment? It’s not an easy process, and certainly not a quick one, but I have decided to begin weaning myself off of excess living towards a minimalist lifestyle. My father told me once that his only burden in life is having too many things to just “get up and go.” And I’ve kept that in mind ever since. Let’s strive to spend less money on things and more time with people, because the bare essentials and loved ones are all that we need. Let’s let go of the desire for more “things” and learn to be rich in a different way.n

The Anatomy of a Wrinkle: Apples, Astrology and Aging
Newton figured out gravity, Galileo discovered the kinematics of the sun and Einstein was correct about time and relativity. So what does any of this have to do with you and your face? All three factors (gravity, sun and age) contribute to those pesky lines, creases and blemishes that have captured our attention. In retaliation, Americans have increasingly sought the help of board-certified plastic surgeons and dermatologist. In fact, the cosmeceutical industry netted 6.5 billion dollars in the United States last year, and Americans underwent 14 million minimally invasive procedures like Botox, LASERs and fillers. The skin is made up of two layers. The outer epidermis is comprised of five layers, the outermost layer being dead cells responsible for keeping water inside and preventing toxins from entering the body. The inner dermis layer contains the collagen, elastin, blood vessels, sensory endings and hair follicles (to name a few). A layer of fat separates the dermis from the underlying structures of the face, primarily muscle and bone. Wrinkles can be classified as either superficial (fine) or deep and static or dynamic in nature. Fine lines generally form at the interface between the two layers of skin, the epidermis and dermis, while deeper furrows from attachments between the skin and the underlying muscle or bone. Dynamic wrinkles result from repetitive movements of our facial muscles while static wrinkles form as gravity slowly pulls the skin and fat over a fixed point. Treatments for wrinkles vary and depend upon the depth and source of the irregularity. Fine lines
(like those that develop under the eyes and around the mouth) can often be treated with a healthy diet, sunscreen, hydration and several skin care creams available at your doctor’s office. One such cream, DEJ by Revision SkinCare has dramatically improved my patient’s eyelid wrinkles. Other options for fine lines include facial resurfacing with either a LASER or chemical peel. The idea is to remove the outer layer of skin to induce the body to create a new, fresher layer in its place. Deeper wrinkles are often treated with botulinum toxin, fillers or surgery. Botox and the other botulinum toxins prevent dynamic wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing facial muscles. Lines on the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the eyes are best treated with Botox. Fillers help more static wrinkles by plumping up deep lines around the mouth, in the folds below the nose and around the jaw line. Surgery is generally reserved for more severe aging with damaged skin elasticity. Facelifts, brow lifts, cheek lifts and eyelid lifts are now considerably less painful and invasive than before due to advances in technique, anesthesia and pain management. Albert Einstein proved that time is a relative dimension. The notion that an astronaut traveling at the speed of light will age slower relative to their colleagues at home is both perplexing and inspiring. Should we all jump on the next space shuttle? Not likely. Forget about time travel and visit your local board-certified plastic surgeon for the best advice on how to slow or reverse the signs of aging.

WHY TUTORING?
HOW SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATION BENEFITS TEACHERS AND THEIR STUDENTS As every teacher understands, learning is not easy for all students. Whether your student has trouble focusing in the classroom, difficulty reading and writing, or is simply overwhelmed, what he or she needs is diagnostic, individualized instruction-the kind only offered by a tutor or learning center. Here are some of the benefits of supplemental education: • Personal Attention. Unfortunately, in a classroom of 20 or 30 students, one teacher may be unable to dedicate sufficient time to those students who are falling behind or struggling with basic concepts. At Huntington, before beginning instruction, we perform a diagnostic evaluation of each student’s strengths and weaknesses. We then design a customized program that addresses the precise needs of each child. This one-to-one approach is the best way to ensure a student clearly understands the material before moving on to the next concept.
• Increase Self-Esteem. Often, children who struggle in school think that they are “dumb” or that they will never succeed. They become so frustrated that every bad grade leads to more feelings of failure. However, when such students are offered personalized instruction and begin mastering skills on their own, they become more self-assured and start to believe in themselves. As teachers know, students with confidence and healthy self-esteem approach school with an optimistic demeanor. • Improved Attitude. Students who have difficulties in school sometimes have a pessimistic attitude toward learning altogether. Tutors work with these struggling students to indentify and tackle the root of their learning difficulties, helping them overcome such feelings of negativity. Clearly, children who feel successful at school will enjoy it more – or at the very least, will be capable of appreciating its importance.
• Increased Motivation. Struggling students tend to withdraw, both in the classroom and at home, hoping to avoid discussions about their grades and homework (or worse, getting called out in class). No matter how energetic the teacher, no matter how exciting the material, reaching these students may be difficult. With increased confidence and improved skills, however, previously indifferent students will likely be more engaged and excited about school overall. Since 1997, Huntington Learning Center has helped thousands of students become more effective learners through our individualized learning programs. We desire to provide every student the best education possible. Our learning centers employ highly-trained, state certified teachers who genuinely care about students. If you have a student who is having difficulty in your classroom, refer them to Huntington. Like you, our goal is to empower children by helping them before life-long learners

WHAT’S EATING MY PLANTS?
This pansy season we’re facing some special challenges. It has been very cloudy and very rainy this season and this causes some special circumstances. There are lots of insects and diseases that thrive in cool cloudy and wet weather. Flowers will not bloom without sunshine. When we have extended periods of cloudiness and lots of moisture in the air plants can experience a disease called botrytis. This is a disease that’s in nature, it’s everywhere around us. It is a gray powdery mold that typically forms on dead or dying pansy blooms and can be quite a nuisance. The perfect conditions for
botrytis are cool cloudy and wet weather. These conditions give the disease everything it needs to thrive. The dead foliage or the dead blooms provide the food. Mother Nature provides the rain and cool cloudy days prevent moisture from drying up, making the perfect place for botrytis to thrive. Botrytis is a disease that travels with the wind and has tiny spores. When we have wet foliage or dying bloom material, the spores stick to the water. Then the disease has everything it needs to get started. One of the best ways to combat botrytis is to dead head your flowers. This means pulling off all the old dead flowers all the all dead blooms and any dying or damaged material. There are several fungicides available for controlling botrytis. I believe that removing the food source and avoiding adding additional water on the foliage are the best ways to control it. Aphids are a horrible nuisance this time of year with cloudy, cool and wet conditions. They thrive in this kind of environment and weather. Typically their colonies live on the undersides of the leaves. So you hardly ever actually see them unless you are looking for them. Aphids basically suck the juice out of your plants. There are several ways to control them.
The most effective way is to use any kind of systemic insecticide specifically made for aphids. A systemic insecticide is absorbed into the entire plant, making the entire plant poisonous to pests. This is a great method after it has cooled off and honey bees and butterflies are no longer present. Another way to get rid of aphids is using Dawn dishwashing liquid diluted with water. Typically two teaspoons of Dawn mixed with one quart of water works very well. Put it in a spray bottle and make sure to spray the undersides of the leaves. We always want to do this when the sun is not shining on the plant. If you spray this in the middle of the day or when the sun is shining on your plant it can burn the leaves and the blooms. Not sure what’s killing your plants? Post a picture of your plant on our Facebook page (Ladyslipper Nursery) and I’ll answer your questions. Thank you for reading and I hope you have a great season!

let go... and let God My phone was set on silent. I missed the calls. I didn’t get the multiple texts he sent. As I cruised south on the highway I noticed a car that looked like ours parked on the side of the road. The longer I stared, the more familiar it looked. Yes, it was ours. Slowing down, I put my blinker on and navigated to the shoulder. I pulled out my phone and noticed the missed messages. My husband’s car had run out of gas. HARSH WORDS Maybe I’d misunderstood, but I thought he said he was going to fuel up before our lunch meeting. He wasn’t happy when I picked him up. He wondered why I hadn’t turned my phone on following the church service. I got defensive. My words lashed out. The ironic part? We were on our way to meet our pastor and his wife to discuss my book, Outrageously Fruitful – a Bible study about the fruit of the Spirit. Something I clearly wasn’t demonstrating. LIVING FRUITFUL I can laugh at the scenario now, and it’s a fantastic reminder that I need to yield to God’s will instead of demanding my rights, in order to live a fruitful life - one that honors Him. The apostle John put it perfectly: “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” (John 15:5; KJV) Instead of focusing on myself, I need to focus on Christ knowing a harvest of fruit will follow. ‘Tis the season of beautiful scenes; the warmth of a fireplace flame, bright glowing windows of white steeple churches casting a reflection on newly fallen snow and the cheerful faces of Christmas carolers singing the angelic song, Luke 2:14, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.” The birth of Isaiah’s Prince of Peace had come to Israel’s land of troubled political unrest, unreasonable taxes and King Herod, who would soon slay her young innocents. President Dwight Eisenhower said, “I think that people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of the way and let them have it.” In John 14:27 Jesus said to a disciple, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you, Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” Peace in our neighborhood and nation and peace in the heart are not the same but peace in our hearts can bring peace to our neighborhoods and the nation. December 25th, 1889 at the age of 39 Henry W. Grady was buried. The War Between the States had devastated Grady’s homeland, the South. The memories from his youth of fierce fighting that took place in Georgia would forever influence his life and journalism. Southern armies had won the most battles with the fewest casualties but they lost the war. His father, William S. Grady, served as a major in the Confederate Army. When Henry was a teenager his father died in the fall of 1864 from wounds received at the siege of Petersburg, Virginia. After graduating from the University of Georgia, Henry studied literature and history at the University of Virginia. Returning to Georgia from his journalistic job at the New York Herald, with
borrowed money he bought a one-fourth interest in the Atlanta Constitution. The years of Reconstruction caused many southerners to flee to western states but Henry Grady put the past behind him and envisioned a prosperous South attractive to northern industry. His editorials boasted of industrial opportunities in a land populated by hard working people seeking a chance for success. He was one of the founders of Georgia Tech and Grady County is named in his honor as is Grady Memorial Hospital. A statue of Henry Grady sets on Market Street in downtown Atlanta. While circumstances furnished Henry Grady abundant reasons to hate he chose to do his best to bring together those made enemies by war. Proverbs 16:7, “When a man’s ways please the LORD, He maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.” Can a world be in more need of peace than ours? Romans 12:18, “If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.” Similarities can be seen today between the months preceding World War I and World War II when we overlooked the evil aggression of some of the same nations who are now repeating their bad behavior. Dr. Albert Einstein, in 1948 warned “The true problem lies in the hearts and thoughts of men. It is not a physical problem but an ethical one . . . not the explosive force of the atom bomb, but the power of the wickedness of the human heart, its’ explosive power for evil.” Romans 5:1, “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ”. He is your answer!

THE LIVES BEHIND THE NUMBERS. HOW MANY HOMELESS ANIMALS HAS FURKIDS SAVED THIS YEAR? If you think about other local rescue organizations, you might guess 200. Possibly 300. Maybe 500? Think again. As of October end, Furkids cat and dog shelters saved nearly 3,000 animals this year from certain death - more than nine homeless pets every day!! Since their beginning, Furkids has rescued, spayed or neutered and rehabilitated more than 20,000 animals, working to place them in caring, stable forever homes.
AND THE LIVES SAVED? Among these rescues were Clady - a sweet-natured Shih Tzu mix dumped by her owner with horrific burns all over her body. Now Clady lives has a good life where she is loved and cared for. Then there’s Lemond - a cat languishing in a high-kill shelter, and deemed so ugly on the outside he was unfit for anything but death. Furkids took him in his hour of need and found him a home where he is living life as the beautiful soul he’s always been on the inside. Furkids turned these forsaken lives around and gave them the chance to matter. Your help matters to Furkids. I decided to be festive and see a Halloween-themed movie. It was hard to decide which one because Goosebumps and Hotel Transylvania 2 were in the theater at the same time. However, I decided to go with my gut and see one of the best cartoon movies of this year, Hotel Transylvania 2. In this addition to the Hotel Transylvania franchise, Mavis and Johnny get married and have a little boy named Dennis. The movie circles around Dracula’s crazy obsession with Dennis maybe becoming a vampire and shows the theme that change is good and change is inevitable. I love this movie because of its amazing humor and the hilarious Andy Samberg and Adam Sandler. Griffin, voiced by David Spade, was my favorite character. He had by far, the funniest lines in the whole movie! This movie is an incredible, family-friendly, and hilarious movie! Definitely one of the best this year! Rating: 10 Lacey Verrill is a student at Forsyth Central High School. The 16 year old sophomore loves movies and sharing her reviews with family, friends and our readers.
