Senior Matt DeZeery breaks the norm by enrolling at the University of Debrecen in Hungary

Graduating seniors muse the thought of escaping the “Grosse Pointe bubble,” but Matthew DeZeery is about to burst through the surface. Starting in the fall, DeZeery will be attending the University of Debrecen medical school in Debrecen, Hungary. He’s excited to jump directly into his chosen field of study. “Right after high school, if you were to go to high school in Europe, you’d go straight into the profession you’d want to go in. So, they developed an Englishspeaking program in Hungary for this,” DeZeery said. “It’s a medical school; it’s a six-year medical school. It’s entirely English-speaking, so all the surrounding English-speaking places, they would go to this school.” DeZeery became aware of the university and what it had to offer through his family. Both of his parents were born in Hungary, his mother in Debrecen, and

his grandmother lived near the campus. As a result of his upbringing, DeZeery’s somewhat confident in his cultural and linguistic abilities. “My parents were afraid of teaching me Hungarian, in fear of hurting my English. They spoke it around me, but they didn’t teach me,” DeZeery said. “So it’s all in my head somewhere. I can understand almost everything, but speaking is a lot more difficult.” Also difficult was the university admissions process. DeZeery had to go to Toronto to take his examinations. “They send out representatives to cities—around the world, I guess—and I went to one in Toronto, where two professors came out. And they gave me an oral exam, and I took a written exam,” DeZeery said. “They continue with the oral examinations while you’re at the university. So I think, to a degree, it is competitive.” DeZeery is confident that the first-hand experiences he will gain attending this medical school will benefit his knowledge. “I think the curriculum itself will put me in the hospital a little bit more than it would here,” he said. DeZeery is attending this university for the long haul. As a result, he doesn’t think he’ll want to study abroad after his stint in Hungary. “I’m sure I’ll get it out of my system. I’ll be there for

the entire six years. I don’t know if I’ll be able to come home at all,” DeZeery said. “There is a summer break. It’s just that there might be internships and whatnot that they’d offer. And just the cost of traveling back and forth might be a little excessive.” Once he’s done, DeZeery plans on coming back to the United States to further pursue his career. “They actually train you for the U.S. Medical Licensing exam at the university itself. So I’d take all the licensing exams there and come back for residency, and so on,” Dezeery said. He is hesitant about the great change he will endure, though. “The whole experience of living in Europe, being outside of what I’m used to, not being able to speak English with the natives there. I guess going outside of my comfort zone,” DeZeery said. But to DeZeery, it’s all worth it. He’s enthusiastic about the myriad of opportunities Europe will bring his way. When asked what he was most looking forward to, DeZeery said, “Just the entire experience of living in Europe, I guess, just being there, out of America. And just seeing all the other people and how diverse it’s gonna be. And I’m gonna be outside of the Grosse Pointe bubble. Just the whole overall experience of everything.”

15 for ‘14: Goodbye from your North Pointe seniors It started with you. We talked to your teachers and coaches, we heard you in the halls, we read your tweets. Stalking? Maybe. Reporting? Certainly. At the start of a new issue, we garnered the latest happenings globally, nationally, state-wide – but mainly – here at North. We assigned out stories, contacted the experts – and you, of course. We listened to our hideous voices in recordings and transcribed our conversations, re-listening countless times to accurately type that inaudible word you said. We saved you to our contacts. We sat on Google Drive writing ledes. We contemplated the connotation of that one word in the headline. We endured edits upon edits. We placed a story on the page to realize those edits left a 200-word white space to fill. We lamented page design only to rejoice in the glory of Myriad Pro and anchor points. We stayed here Monday nights after dinner hours. We met on Thursday for Editorial Board, discussing what Big Brother was up to now. We spent lunch hours in B-302, took refuge in the Bat Cave and coaxed InDesign to open before the hour was over. We panicked over deadlines – but hit them. We stressed until we knew our pages were North Pointe quality. All to bring you the news. Real coverage was priority, always: news analysis of Grosse Pointe’s special education department, a Netflix breakdown (better than The Tower’s), a look inside Detroit and

thorough reviews of albums from Slim Shady to One Direction to Justin Timberlake. North Pointe consumed us, and we embraced it as it did. From staff reporter to Editor-in-Chief, we each cherished our time working for this nationally-acclaimed publication. As it comes to an end, we’d like to thank all the fifth-hour teachers who grudgingly accepted tardy passes as our bi-weekly production cycles came to a close. A big thank you to Shari Adwers for transitioning into the position of North Pointe adviser for our junior and senior years. Your undying enthusiasm was much appreciated. We would be remiss not to thank Andrew Taylor who established the tradition of North Pointe excellence by flipping the paper in his four years as adviser, instituting procedures, policies and a culture of excellence – that we still follow. In our freshman and sophomore years, he instilled this knowledge in us, providing the tools to become the nationally award-winning publication we are today. Friendships formed here kept us coming back, even after sources ignored our calls and stories fell through. North Pointe gave us a place to mature not only as students, but as people. Finally, thank you to the students who gave us a reason to write. We hope you enjoyed our production as much as we enjoyed making it.

Sincerely, Your Class of 2014 North Pointe staff
