LOVED Halloween as a child! Okay, to be completely honest, I love Halloween to this day. Something about it has always fascinated me—the dressing up and getting to be whomever you choose always seemed kind of interesting. Whether you identify with a superhero, a monster or a celebrity—you get to pick! “Even more so, I have always been fascinated with everyone else’s choices. Who knew my best friend had some urge to dress up as Shrek? Or, that you’d get to see so much of Bill Clinton’s face on Halloween night? Maybe it is kind of “Freud” of me to assume this is an expression of everyone’s inner desires; but, in some ways it seems like that’s exactly the case! Even if it is silly, even if it is just curiosity, it is still who you pick to be when you get the choice. This got me thinking about something I once heard someone say – that you are the person you intend to be. It seems that, most of the time, those calmer, well read, more organized and
contentious versions of ourselves are just a few choices away. But, we get so tied down by all the craziness of daily life that we can’t even get organized enough to make the choice to be more organized. It is a constant struggle to find the time to even find the time. I’m impressed you’re even still reading my Editor’s Column, given the schedule I’m sure you have. But, since you’re still here with me, I’ll use my last few sentences to give you the reminder I’m sure you constantly repeat to yourself: We all have a good measure of control over our seemingly uncontrollable lives. At the very least, we can control our reactions to the world around us. I say, we take it upon ourselves to take the extra breath and the extra minute to be the person we keep telling ourselves we want to be. Yours very truly, Maria

Big Tobacco vs. The FDA
T
ime and time again, people choose to do what they want versus what’s good for them. And yet, the FDA seems to think that showing bloodcurdling images on cigarette packs reduce the number of smokers in the U.S. The FDA has recently approved nine new warning labels to appear, in turn, on cigarette packs. The new warning labels are to be printed on the entire top half— front and back—of all cigarette packaging. Tobacco companies have responded to this by suing the FDA, claiming the new labels are “intensely gruesome” and violate the companies’ right of free speech. The law suit is also motivated by the fact that producing these new labels will cost millions of dollars in new equipment, designer fees and processing. This cost is only compounded by companies’ need to remain competitive against other cigarette brands also tailoring their distribution to the new FDA requirements. Eugene Naydovich, 25, a local c-store distributor who sells cigarettes and convenience store goods, finds that, with or without these images, cigarette sales will not change. He feels that this type of imagery on cigarette packs is unnecessary. He explains, “there is no point to it, it’s no longer a question of whether smoking is bad for you. What if we put photos of overweight people on burgers? Will people stop eating them? Putting a picture of a sick old man or a fake corpse on a cigarette pack is not going to stop people from smoking.” The US government has waged a war against the tobacco industry since the midtwentieth century, with only marginal results. It doesn’t seem likely that these new FDA guidelines, with or without the success of the pending lawsuit, will cause a different result.

Word on the Street Philadelphia Mayor Talks Tough
M
ayor, Michael A. Nutter, set papers in an uproar when he told the “black youths” of Philadelphia that they had “damaged [their] own race.” His impassioned speech even locally trended on Twitter. Nutter went on to tell his audience, in more colorful language, that they should clean up their act—“pull your pants up and buy a belt ‘cause no one wants to see your underwear or the crack of your butt; If you walk into somebody’s office with your hair uncombed and a pick in the back, and your shoes untied, and your pants half down, tattoos up and down your arms and on your neck, and you wonder why somebody won’t hire you? They don’t hire you ‘cause you look like you’re crazy.” Nutter’s speech was in response to a violent flash mob that was caught on tape, where teens knocked down passers-by on a Center City street and assaulted shoppers at an upscale department store. As a further response, Nutter enacted a temporary 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday night curfew in targeted areas of Center City for those under the age of 18. Those found breaking curfew will be fined $100–$300 and may face time in custody. Nutter further scolded parents, telling them “it is your responsibility to know where they are, what they are doing and who they are with. They are your children. You need to raise them. You are responsible for them.” The debate has raged on both ends of the spectrum. Some argue that the curfew is arbitrary—not intended to solve a problem of flash mobs, but solely to punish and ostracize a certain group of society. Others agree with Nutter’s message, that young people should not be exempted from having to contribute to society or from the worry of how they affect it. Some people are on the fence, that Nutter used the wrong words and the wrong punishment, but had the right message fueling it. If you were the mayor of Philadelphia, what steps would you take to abolish teen violence from our streets?

one-bedroom apartment downtown? Where do you keep your wine cellar? Have you considered the Delaware River? An artist turned wine merchant in Italy found that space wasn’t an issue when he began storing all of his wine in Mediterranean, off the coast of his vineyards. Apparently, the sea is the perfect location for sparkling wine—the right temperature, no light, no air getting into the bottle to tamper the wine and the water’s current to rock the bottles. The bottles are placed in the sea in noncorrosive, stainless steel cages, about 200 feet below sea level. Upon bringing the bottles back to the surface, the wine tasted sweet and fine. Luckily, authorities and scientists in the area also thought that was a great idea!

No Olympics on U.S. Soil until 2022
e all recall how the U.S. fought tooth and nail to host the 2012 Olympics. It seems that anxiousness has fallen away, and the U.S. has no plans to bid for the 2020 Olympic games at all. The news comes after a money dispute between the U.S. Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee—which has already turned down two U.S. bids in the past two rounds of bidding. It seems the two groups still cannot agree on a revenue-sharing agreement. In not submitting the bid, it is all but guaranteed that there will be at least a 20-year gap before the Olympics will likely be held in America.

A “Magic Fluid” to Replace Dental Fillings
Y
NO ONE likes going to the dentist. In fact, I’m willing to bet that most people HATE going to the dentist, especially if it is for anything more than the standard biannual check up and cleaning. Scientists working in the dental field are hoping to change that. Specifically, they’re working on new technology to ensure that neither you nor I have to get another filling ever again. Researchers, at the University of Leeds found a new ‘peptide-based’ solution that is applied to a tooth’s cavity, instead of a filling. What this “magic fluid” does is basically; get your tooth to fix itself. In more scientific terms, the “peptide fluid” is a naturally occurring solution that helps teeth regenerate themselves. It does this by permeating the cavity in your tooth and instantly forming a gel within it. This gel then attracts calcium and regenerates the missing minerals from within your own tooth. No drills? No needles? No problem!

ith obesity rates due to hit 50% of all Americans by 2030 (up from our current 38%), the sooner you can teach children the importance of eating right, the better. Well, researchers have determined that concerned parents can start early, very early. What a mother eats while she is pregnant with her child actually determines her child’s future food habits. The amniotic fluid within which a baby lays while in the womb is filled with the flavors of those foods a mother eats. From this, the child forms what can be called “food memories”—a taste for foods that will last into the baby’s future. So, ensure the health of the next generation, before they’re even born!

Serial Killer or researchers, finding a cure for cancer would be like winning F an oscar or a grammy. Well, probably more than that, since they’d be saving millions of lives! That is why the scientists at the University of Pennsylvania are so thrilled to report the first successful approach for treating leukemia. How did they do this? Glad you asked! It seems the scientists found a way to turn a patient’s own blood cells into a type of hunter that seeks out and destroys any cancer cells they may find. They do this by injecting a gene into the patient’s body that enables his or her white blood cells to multiply by thousands, going on to kill any cancerous cells in the blood, lymph tissue and bone marrow. So far, only three leukemia patients have been treated. However, in those three patients, the results have been miraculous. The most common type of leukemia, CLL, disappeared in two of the patients, and was reduced by 70 percent in the third patient. As much as 5 pounds of cancerous tissue virtually melted away in each person, and is still gone a year later. Hopefully, the National Cancer Institute and other pharmaceutical companies will reconsider their decision not to fund this research, as the results have been groundbreaking!
Quick Health Fact! Traditional medical advice is that 30 minutes of fitness a day is the golden standard. Many doctors are now breaking apart from that tradition, as more and more research shows that just 15 minutes of daily moderate exercise increases life expectancy by three years! In our fast paced, busy world, not many can spare half an hour. However, I doubt many would want to spare three years! If just 15 minutes a day is the cost, I’m sure many are willing to pay!

Youth and Health Are the Key to Lower Life Insurance Costs
veryone knows that someday they will die. But, in everyone’s mind, that day is some day in the distant, wrinkly future. As a result, too many people put off purchasing life insurance. These people reason that they don’t need it yet, that there’ll be time to get it in the future, or that it’s expensive so they’d rather wait for their wallets to thicken before making the investment. Liberty Mutual Insurance Agent, Alex Krishtul, says that “waiting too long to buy life insurance is one of the most expensive mistakes a person can make!” Alex explains that insurance companies award life insurance policies in brackets, and every applicant is ranked based on gender, age, weight and medical history. For instance, insurance is cheaper for women than for men because, statistically, women live longer. Therefore, those thinking that they’re saving by putting off paying for life insurance have actually got it backward. The older you are, the more your policy will cost. There is a direct relationship between age and the cost of your life insurance. Similarly, there is the same relationship between weight and insurance cost. In fact, weight is a big factor (no pun intended). This is because insurance companies hold, as a general rule, that the older, heavier and therefore more prone to illness, you are, the more of a liability you are to them. People should, therefore, lock in their life insurance policies when they’re young and still attractive to insurance companies. October 2011•Insight 7

Why we Love Celebrities
W
hen Hurricane Irene moved toward New Jersey in late August, the cast of MTV’s Jersey Shore was immediately evacuated to L.A. by private jet. It seems that in a country where celebrity is the equivalent of royalty, even the reality star is on some level idolized. Where does this come from—our need to elevate any form of celebrity above ourselves, as if some higher being? If the United States were a high school, then celebrities are the both loved and hated “cool kids in school.” The more the media shows us, the more involved we become in the minute details of celebrity life, and the more they subsequently show us. It is a vicious circle that lives and breathes off of the general public’s fascination with gossip. We enjoy, as a nation, to talk about something “juicy,” whether it is Joe Shmo down the street or some crazy incident that went down the day before. We enjoy talking about some information that takes us away from our daily lives. Celebrity entertainment provides this outlet. Add to this the fact that celebrities, fueled with all that extra money and those extra resources, lead an exaggerated, dramatized, and more professionally “made-up” version of the average life. In the celebrity world, there is rarely a lull in conversation. Essentially, the caricature of a normal day that a celebrity seems to lead seems to feed directly into our internal need to gossip. Now, should we devote private jets and hurricane resources on the cast of the Jersey Shore? That is debatable.

Throwing a Halloween party for the kids? Add this to your menu: Swamp Juice! Ingredients (for 8 servings): • 1/2 cup small tapioca pearls (found in the baking aisle of most grocery stores) • Food coloring • 4 tablespoons sugar • 8 gummy fish • Seltzer water • Lemonade • 8 gummy worms Instructions: 1. Make the eggs: Bring 6 cups of water to a boil and add the tapioca pearls. Reduce the heat slightly and boil the pearls, stirring occasionally, for 20 to 25 minutes. 2. Color the eggs: Divide the pearls, with the remaining water, between two bowls. Add 4 drops of food coloring (we used 3 drops of yellow and 1 drop of green in one bowl, and 4 drops of blue in the other) and 2 tablespoons of sugar to each bowl. Stir the mixtures, then allow them to sit uncovered for 20 to 25 minutes. Drain and rinse the pearls with cold water. 3. Assembe the drink: Spoon 2 tablespoons of pearls into each glass and drop in a gummy fish. Fill the glasses with seltzer water, then add a splash of lemonade. Place a gummy worm around a spoon.
Blow-Dry Bars! A
ll women know that the BEST part of getting your hair cut and/or done at a salon is the blow-dry— the part where your hair gets perfectly laid in a way that is just impossible to do by yourself at home. The new trend in hair care industries caters exclusively to this. More and more “Blow-dry Bars” have been popping up and offering, for a flat rate of $30-$40, blow-dries. These Salons don’t do cuts, colors, trims, or washes, but focus solely on the blow dry. Their largest clientele are women that barge through their doors between 8a.m. and 10a.m., to get a blow dry on their way to work. Some locations are even serving drinks! Would you visit a Blow-Dry Bar to get that perfect blow out?

Sports & Athletics S
occer—it seems that those in Europe and South America take to it the way we Americans take to oxygen (as a bit of a necessity). Allegiances to one team or another are practically religious in nature and whole countries come to a standstill just to watch the FIFA World Cup. Ask an American what his take on soccer is and, most likely, it’ll be similar to Sam’s (28, Warminster), who responds “eh, I guess playing can be fun but I just can’t really get into watching it.” n Many have argued, for the past few decades, that soccer is on the cusp of popularity. That estimation has yet to be true. It seems this disconnect with soccer is part of our national genetics. For one thing, soccer is a not a commercially friendly sport because it is non-stop. That means there would be no room for commercials. Other countries have state sponsored TV and don’t care as much about income from commercials. To make soccer commercially viable in the U.S., you would have to change the rules and slow down the game. n Not only that, but most Americans are frustrated that soccer doesn’t have enough scoring, where usually about 3 goals win the game. That is important to Americans because, as Sam
Why Soccer
Will Never Be the Great
American Sport points out, “it’s the only real thing about soccer we understand; not defensive strategies, controlling the midfield, one touch passes or playing wide. All we understand is how many goals you score.” It is this frustration that leads many to call soccer “slow” or “boring.” n Yet another hurdle to soccer’s popularity is that it is not “homegrown,” so to speak. Soccer is largely an imported sport. Many Americans, are already juggling baseball, basketball, football, etc. and don’t feel the need to add yet another sport to the roster, that has not been born and raised in the U.S.. Sadly, not for lack of trying, it seems soccer will never be part of the “in crowd” of US sports.

ports are good for your health. Locker rooms—not so much. After everyone works out and sweats on gym mats or equipment, they shuffle into a locker room, creating the perfect breeding ground for countless bacterial diseases and skin conditions. In fact, according to the National Athletic Trainers Association, 1 out of 3 people in the U.S. have a skin disease, athletes being particularly vulnerable. No one thinks about bacteria when they’re finally done with a game, but get a disease like scabies (a very contagious and terribly itchy infestation) and you’ll be sitting out the next game. There’s no way to completely sterilize a locker room and only so much you can do. But, you can at least do the following: wash after every practice or workout, don’t share gym or sport gear, always wear flip-flops in the locker room and shower area, wipe down any gym equipment prior to and after your workouts and use only your own towel to dry off (which you should also wash after each workout. Obviously, we hope that our current fitness centers are taking the necessary precautions to keep our locker rooms clean, but we need to take these few simple steps to make sure we stay bacteria free.

Does the apple fall far from the tree?
I happen to know that my fiancé’s father constantly cheated on his mother. I may be para-
noid, but I’m constantly worrying that, having been brought up by this man, it could be a character trait in my fiancé as well. Is cheating genetically contagious? —Crystal, Philadelphia If we were going purely by the research (and pretending every human is not an individual), it would seem the apple falls frustratingly close to the tree. In a study of 86 couples, researchers noted that women did not seem to be as influenced by parental unfaithfulness as men in their own relationships. Researchers also found, as they commonly do, that most men don’t stray because they’re unsatisfied with their relationships, but because they want more sex and sexual partners. Often, men look to their fathers as a barometer for what is appropriate and what they can get away with. However, if we can step away from over-generalizing statistics, it is important for you to remember that no two men are the same—just like you and Jane Doe sitting next to you are different. No one knows the ins and outs of your fiancé the way that you do. Take into consideration first how he treats you, how you feel in your relationship and if your fiancé himself has ever given you reason to doubt him. There is no reason to bring a negative fear into your relationship that has no reason for being there.
The lesser of two evils?
I’m overworked … drastically. I work as an accountant, staying late at the office almost every day until almost 10pm and coming in on weekends. We’ve had a lot of layoffs and I’m afraid that, unless I show that I’m really worth keeping, I could be next to go. I just don’t know what’s better anymore, being overworked or unemployed? —Will, Blue Bell We may be moving out of our national economic crisis, but we’re doing it at quite the snails pace. In the meantime, the job market remains intimidating for those both employed and unemployed. I would remiss if I told you not to up your game in the midst of layoffs. The fact that you have to work harder is a given. That being said, a certain measure of balance does not have to go out the window. By balance, I mean that, in order to remain competitive in your position, be aware of what your co-workers are doing. Are you under performing by comparison? Are you doing far more than you need to have an edge? You need to be doing enough to show your employer that you are dedicated and a hard worker, not so much that you are willing to die of exhaustion for them. To put it another way: if you need to work overtime, go ahead. If you need to bring a mattress into the office, you’ve gone too far.

BBM Music to Be Strong Competition for iTunes
hat do you use to listen to music? iTunes, right? If you said no, you’re among the minority, as Apple products that connect to iTunes are the most common source of music around. Those with iPhones, have the system built into the phone. Those with blackberries… well, most of them get iPods. That may soon change. Research In Motion (RIM) recently announced “BBM Music,” a cloud based service, which would allow blackberry users to build a community-based music library to share amongst their BBM friends. Countless music companies, like Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI, have already signed onto the project, creating a database of millions of songs for BBM users. Not only is this new system a way to have whatever music a blackberry user may want at his or her fingertips; but it also takes the standard BBM friend-to-friend connection to a whole different level. President and Co-CEO of Research in Motion released that BBM Music would allow each user to build a personal music profile with 50 favorite songs, up to half of which can be changed monthly. Additionally, BBM Music would allow your BBM friends to subscribe to your page, and you to theirs, so that you can share your music collections. Friends can comment on each other’s music choices. Best of all, BBM Music does not require a constant Wifi connection and can be accessed offline and saved to your Blackberry. Helping make this product a reality is Omnifone, one of the top cloud music service providers. Omnifone will provide RIM with back-end solutions for the BBM Music service’s content management, music hosting, reporting functions, etc. Omnifone is not the only top named company involved, as a lot of funding and research has been poured into this new venture set to bring socializing and music together in the form of your smartphone. A Beta trial BBM Music has already began in the U.S., U.K. and Canada, whereas the service should be available to all customers later his year for a monthly subscription of $4.99 USD. More information about the service and its availability can be found at www.Blackberry.com/bbmusic.
Apple Works on its Next Generation iPad
W
e don’t usually get much downtime to enjoy our current Apple products before the next, better and fancier versions of them are released. That is a trend that Apple seems keen on upholding, as it plans for an early 2012 release of the next generation iPad. Apple is currently working with different component suppliers and assemblers to stay ahead of its competition, in the form of other similarly used tablets. Leaks of information reveal that the new iPad will likely have a 2048 by 1536 resolution display—much larger than the current Ipad’s 1024 by 768 display. So far, millions of component parts have been shipped across countries to create the new iPad, as Apple gets all of its parts from other suppliers rather than “in-house.” Beyond that, not much concrete information is known about Apple’s sure-to-be hit product. Consumers will have to wait and see what Apple has in store for them.
