e’re constantly thinking and talking about what we want out of life. We’ve even developed holidays and scheduled our self-wishing into our Calendars. On New Years, our resolutions take the form of “ I want to be skinnier this year; I want to be more successful this year; I want to get laid more this year.” Even on our birthdays, we reserve that one “blow out the candle” moment to take some time out and make even more wishes. It seems that wishing and wanting makes up a large chunk of what us humans call “down-time.” That’s probably why I’ve always been so fond of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving, in this sense, is kind of the outsider to the rest of the year. There is no designated moment somewhere between stuffing and carving the turkey where we stop to ponder everything we want. Instead, it’s the
day we sit with those nearest and dearest and FINALLY say thank you. We count our blessings, thank our loved ones, admire the opportunities we’ve been provided and put on full display those gracious natures we keep tucked away the other 364 days of the year. What is even more interesting to me is that when we take Thanksgiving to stop and say thank you, we are never saying thank you for that BMW we got, that the plastic surgeon didn’t mess up a boob job, or that a stock is doing well. Just about everyone ends up being grateful for those people they have in their lives that love them and for the happiness they’ve gotten to share. Try as hard as we can through the rest of the year to seem cemented and selfish, Thanksgiving always pulls back the curtain and reminds us all of our simple, humble, please-able humanity. Yours very truly, Maria

e stand one year from the polls, watching as the presidential campaign gets underway. The next year will bring many campaign tour buses to obscure mid-western cities, celebrity endorsements, position TV spots and bickering (LOTS of political bickering). Incumbent, Barack Obama will have quite the battle in the November 2012 elections. Even after the boost he received with the death of Osama Bin Laden and the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the economy will still be a big hurdle for Obama, as the financial reality of 2011 U.S. does not compare to that which was promised during Obama’s 2008 presidential run. This fall has witnessed Obama step up a hard line against debt and tax cuts for the wealthy. We now await the result. In the meantime, many Republicans have thrown themselves in the ring for the top spot of Commander in Chief. To prepare you for the year ahead, we’ve put together a list of the big names and their political views… so far. 0LWW 5RPQH\ (R, Mass.) Where Romney stands: Generally pro-life; in support of right of individuals to bear arms; supports sentencing under the three strikes law; opposes both same-sex marriage and civil unions; had previously held long term support for “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell;” against legalizing medical marijuana; supports spending cuts to lead to deficit reduction, reform of medicare, Medicaid and Social Security and was a signatory
:RUG RQ WKH 6WUHHW of the 2011 “cut, cap and balance” pledge; hopes to become independent of foreign oil sources by developing national energy alternatives; Romney opposed the Tax Relief Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and the Job Creation Act of 2010. 5LFN 3HUU\ (R, Tx.) Where Perry stands: Is the longest continuously serving current U.S. governor and the longest serving governor in TX state history; opposes abortion and federal abortion funding; opposes human embryonic stem cell research; opposes samesex marriage; supports capital punishment; supports state based drug policies over a federal policy; supports voluntary prayer in public schools; opposes any federal health care plan, such as “ObamaCare”; opposes restrictions in the right to bear arms; was a member of the Tea Party movement; against raising taxes; a huge proponent of state rights and policies over federal.
0LFKHOH %DFKPDQQ (R, Mn.) Where Bachmann Stands: Has promised to serve only one term as president; strongly against abortion; against US involvement in Libya; had voted yes on the opening of the Outer Continental Shelf to oil drilling; does not believe in same-sex marriage, but holds that it is a state issue; had voted yes earlier this year on barring the EPA from regulating greenhouse gases; opposes tax cuts for the poor and wants the bottom half of society to pay more taxes; supports citizen right to bear arms; slowly wants to move away from Social Security and Medicare; member of the Tea Party; suggests no cuts to the defense budget; wants a repeal of any federal healthcare, namely “ObamaCare;” voted yes on ending the Home Affordable Mortgage Program; against raising the debt ceiling. *The buzz words you’ll hear the most of this year: deficit, unemployment, budget, tax cuts!
COLLEGE RAPE ON THE RISE
C
ases of College on-campus rape are on the rise. The Department of Justice has reported that one in every five college women will be the victim of rape or attempted rape. Most at danger are freshman and sophomore women, even more so during the first few weeks of the school year. This is mostly true, either because they are younger and not as experienced, or because of the “it won’t happen to me mentality” that tends to come more with youth. What’s worse is that these statistics probably only capture a percentage of the real numbers, as most rape cases are never reported. The Department of Justice actually confirms that up to 95% of rape cases on campus will never be reported. That can be chalked up to things like shame, denial or avoidance—as most rape victims go through all three emotions. Making the situation even direr, research shows that plenty of campuses neglect to correctly and completely report sex crime statistics, most likely so that their college doesn’t seem unsafe to potential students. Angela, 20 (name has been changed), responds to these statistics, “I’m not very shocked by them. I have a friend that was sexually assaulted on campus and I’m only one of two people that know. I don’t know that I’d do different in her situation, it’s such a scary thing.”

Does your pet need a lift? Nose job? Botox? Laughing yet? Don’t, because pet plastic surgery is on the rise! Not the old fashioned ear and tail cropping, but more “trendy procedures. PetPlan, a U.K. based insurance company reports not only “a jump in nose jobs by 25% over three years costing a total of $2.5 million in 2010 but $1.6 million invested in eyelifts! Also popular is pet liposuction tummy tucks and Botox! Even more common are Neuticles, which are fake, bean-shaped testicles made out of solid silicone and come in a range of sizes for the neutered dog to maintain pride and self-esteem. Though there is often opposition to pet plastic surgery, what some don’t realize is that it can actually benefit the pets! Facelifts can reduce the amount of skin sagging from a dog’s face if he hasn’t fully grown into it and allow him to see again. Moreover, nose surgeries can improve breathing problems in pets with flat noses. Liposuction is a potentially good solution to the obesity problem plaguing over half of American dogs and cats. Whether these “health concerns are what’s motivating pet owners to get their pets plastic surgery, however, is yet to be determined.

She shares her inspirations, her growth as an artist and how she produces her works. Hannah’s charm, wit and creative nature will surely take her very far. To see more of Hannah’s work, beyond what is featured here, visit her deviant art account: http://banana4short.deviantart.com Insight Magazine (IM): How long have you been painting? Hannah Schorsch: I’ve been painting in class this past year, took a drawing class the year before that and am currently in AP (accelerated) art classes in school. IM: What kind of tools do you use? HS: Paints, pencils and all of the normal stuff but I also love using different materials that people wouldn’t expect—toothbrushes, sponges, different plant materials, cut outs from newspapers and magazines. I also use a lot of household items to get different textures. IM: What inspires your work? HS: For the work that is not still life, I am inspired by my dreams. I tend to have pretty vivid, imaginative dreams. I am also inspired by both studio artists and poets. I also really like to go into Philly on first Friday’s and get inspired there. IM: How long does it typically take you to complete a painting? HS: It really varies. For a watercolor still life, it may take as long at 20 hours. A monoprint takes me two days. The piece with the rainbow and graffiti took me 2 months to do and I went through multiple colored pencils. Overall, the more realistic I want them to be, the longer they take.
Want to advertise in ,QVLJKW? Visit P\LQVLJKWPDJ FRP to learn how.
IM: How would you categorize your artwork? HS: I create many types of art: realistic, prints and graffiti art, all done in different mediums—like watercolor, acrylic, tempura, pastel, conte, charcoal and pencil. I am still exploring different styles and categories, so I cant categorize my art just yet. I am just exploring at the moment. IM: What qualities do you find define a powerful artist? HS: I think a powerful artist is not one that only paints what they see. The powerful artist can see past what is visible to the eye, and show that in their work. These artists are able to reach their audience on a deeper level. IM: If you could go anywhere in the world for inspiration, where would you go? HS: I don’t need anywhere scenic or fancy. It’s more about the people who live there—their culture and struggles. I would go to connect with people that are completely different from me.

he average woman consumes about three pounds of lipstick over a lifetime. That is A LOT of lipstick! When we apply and re-apply, we’re under the assumption that no harm is being done. But, what if we’re wrong? What if, every time we put on our make-up, we’re exposing ourselves to a range of harmful chemicals and additives? We’d think that the American Chemistry Council, the FDA and other organizations in existence to keep us safe and informed would tell us about something like that, wouldn’t we? The truth of the matter is that the makeup industry is highly unregulated. Details of U.S. makeup production are hard to come by. But, the European Union has cracked down on the industry for including harmful toxins in their products. Specifically, it has found that large doses of lead and phthalates are used in things like lipstick and eye shadow. These toxins have been linked to birth defects, infertility and hormonal changes. Moral of the story? Stay informed about the products you use!
Just Trouble Sleeping… or INSOMNIA?
Y
ou couldn’t fall asleep last night. Actually, you hadn’t been able to sleep well for a few days. Come to think of it, this is nothing new—you’ve had this sleeping issue for a while. Well, maybe it’s not simply that you’re not sleeping well. Maybe you have insomnia. To put it in medical-ese, insomnia is “difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, or both, despite adequate opportunity and time to sleep, leading to impaired daytime functioning.” What’s worse, it doesn’t discriminate, affecting 30–50% of the general population. That’s potentially almost half the country! But is that you, or is your trouble sleeping lately only that, and no more? To find out, doctors recommend you keep a “sleep diary.” Corny? Yes. Effective? Yes. You write how long it takes you to fall asleep each night, whether you tossed and turned and how you feel when you wake up. Write in the diary for a few weeks, and it can help your doctor give you the right diagnosis. What is the best way to get rid of belly fat? 5,000 crunches? Strength building? Good exercises, yes,

but not the best, according to researches, to rid you of the tummy jiggle. It turns out that jogging is actually your best offense against belly fat—specifically, a moderate intensity workout for a prolonged amount of time. So go and build up your long iPod playlists and get jogging!

Fighting Gravity
W
hen it comes to skin, its always a fight against time and gravity. It just doesn’t look as bright and tight as it used to. Even when you had eight hours of sleep, your skin can still appear “stressed.” Some turn to the knife, some turn to Botox, some to lasers, but what if I told you there’s a new procedure using nothing more than ultrasound technology? Yep, the same stuff that gives you a sneak peek at your baby. A new FDA-cleared procedure called “Ulthera” uses direct sound waves to first inspect and then treat the skin’s structure from the inside out. It promises to heat the tissue in order to lift, tone and tighten. Ulthera can be used on the face, neck, brows, cheeks, and chin. In just under an hour, with 1 treatment, no special preparation and no recovery time, the client walks away with a rejuvenated appearance. The fine print? There are no known side effects of Ultherapy, but it is not entirely painless. Clients say they were given painkillers before the procedure and their results took a couple months to see the full effect. It’s worse on your wallet - the procedure runs between $1,000–$4,000.
7(;7 0#1,$ ho doesn’t text? There were even rumors about a : “no texting and walking” law that was being passed (not true, by the way). True, you may be so entranced by
a text that you walk in front of a bus. Though the more dangerous consequence of texting, is getting beat up by a theater full of movie-goers that are distracted by your bright phone screen in the middle of the dark theater— but that’s just my opinion. On a serious note, however, texting does negatively impact your health, psychologically. Texting has been strongly linked by physicians to
heavy increases in anxiety, insomnia, stress, carpel tunnel, worsening grades in children, blurred vision and other versions of “distraction.” Nonetheless, the number of texts sent every month gets larger and larger and the unlimited texting plans aren’t helping. Call me old fashioned, but I think this can all be fixed with two words— phone calls. It’s as simple as that. They take the same amount of time as writing out what you want to say and fix all the things that auto-correct auto-corrects for you. So people, just make the call!
What if a Contagion Movie Type of Virus
WAS REAL? ave you seen Contagion? No? Well, its about a lethal pandemic that
+ spreads through the world, killing millions upon millions of people, as researches desperately try to find some—any—vaccine against it. What makes the movie good, and scary, is how likely its plot actually is. Could we handle a virus of that magnitude suddenly hitting our countries? Especially, our cities—in which there are so many people that disease spreading is easiest. They couldn’t in the movie, and—in the movie, just as in reality—it would take months, at the very least, to identify the DNA sequence of our genetic makeup to develop a vaccine. And all that is before the testing process can even start. Worried yet? Good, because it is scary. But, with “rapid genome sequencing” we’re slowly taking preventive steps that will, hopefully, protect us in the case of a Contagion-esque scenario. It sounds “science-y” but what it does is let scientists view an entire blueprint of a microbe – like a satellite hovering over the genome, seeing it all at once, instead of bit by bit. With this technology, scientists have been investigating samples of sewage plants, buses, school, airports, doctor’s offices, etc and sequencing the genetic makeup of these organisms. Ideally, this will predict which viruses are creeping up on us. Hopefully, the National Cancer Institute and other pharmaceutical companies will reconsider their decision not to fund this research, as the results have been groundbreaking! November 2011 ,QVLJKW

I think they were ready to eat off of their laps if they had to. After trying the food, I can see why. I was presently surprised by the cozy, romantically dim and intimate area in the back of the restaurant. Let me start off by saying, I was making OMG noises with every bite of my tapas! My favorites: Revuelto, Fideos Con Mariscos, and Costillas De Terners. With so many tapas to choose from, you can come back and experience a whole new menu. The ambiance was perfect for every occasion and the service was impeccable. Our server Sarah was one of the best servers I have ever had. Is boxing
dying
in America?
ou’d think this would be an easy “yes” or “no” question. But, those for and against the sport of boxing never really just answer yes or no. Adam, 26, argues one point of view—that boxing is dying. “Nobody really cares about it anymore. MMA has taken over, and is much better and more exciting.” He further argues, “there are no American heavyweight champions like Ali/Tyson/Frasier/Foreman left, or even viable contenders. MMA has stars that are popular in every weight division. Boxing is corrupted with greedy promoters, too many weight classes, and too many organizations. It’s popular in Europe, but here in the States, we prefer MMA.” Clearly, his view is impassioned! However, Eric, 33 fights back. He argues that, “it always has its ups and downs just like any other sport. It has experienced worse in the past, and bounced back up stronger than ever. Although there is a lack of American heavyweight challengers there are lighter divisions with quicker and larger names such as Pacquiao and Mayweather who are, arguably, pound-forpound, the best fighters in the world. Boxing is like a religion that has loyal fans that live by the sport, and has the highest PPV numbers. MMA may sell out 15,000 seat stadiums, but boxing sells out 80,000.” Who has it right? hat if football, volleyball, and gymnastics had a baby? It would be named “bossaball.” A game that takes approximately 45 minutes to set up, but is so engaging that I am tempted to put on my gym gear and find the closest bossaball club as soon as possible. Here’s how it works: There are two teams of 3-5 players each. The aim of the game is for each team to get the ball on the other team’s field. Players use the trampoline to gain height and then use any body part to hit the ball. The opposing team is awarded a point when the ball touches the floor, and depending on which part of the cushions or trampoline it hits, there is an established point system. Today, the most famous teams are in Spain and Brazil. Not to mention, there are perks too: Bossaball delivers outstanding opportunities for marketing. People love to watch and play, and it is so unique that it easily grabs media attention.
$ 'RVH RI ,QVLJKW Pregnant and Scared Not to sound like a statistic, but I’m 17 and I’m pregnant. Now, I know without a doubt that my ex-boyfriend, who I had been with for three years, is the father. But, we broke up a month ago for reasons that make getting back together, even for the sake of a baby, impossible. So, I know I’m pretty much on my own with this one and I want to keep my baby. My parents don’t know and I am terrified to tell them! I don’t know how they’ll react but I’m pretty sure it won’t be with a “yay congratulations!” How do I tell them? —Cindy, Allentown A baby is such a beautiful thing. But, obviously, it becomes a less joyous occasion if you’re under the strain of worry. Since you’ve decided you’ll keep the baby, I’m assuming that you’ve already considered how it will affect your education, job prospects, how you’ll pay for and raise the child and other potential alternatives, like adoption. Given that, your parents should be in the know sooner rather than later. At worst, it could be what you fear—that they don’t handle it well and the responsibility of your baby goes solely to you.
But, imagine how much worse it could be if they find out later, and find out that you’ve been keeping such a big secret from them. And, just cause that may be the worst case scenario, doesn’t mean that it is the only scenario. Give your parents a chance, and they might surprise you. They are, after all, your parents and, given some time to digest the information (a day, a week, a month and a few months are all adequate amounts of time for this type of digestion, fyi), they might actually turn out to be your biggest support system.
Son on drugs?
I’m a mother to two sons. My youngest son is 15 years old and has just begun his first year in high school. Over the summer, I’ve already noticed changes in him that worry me and fear that they’ll only get worse as he goes through such a big public high school. He’s hasn’t been the happy kid that I’ve known his whole life—he seems angrier, more secluded, uninterested in things that he used to love. And, obviously, he’s not confiding in me about anything. Maybe I’m paranoid, but given his age and his friends, I’m afraid this is all because he has started using drugs. How can I tell if I’m right or not? —Sarah, Philadelphia Short of a traditional surprise drug test, there really is no definitive way to tell. However, before you resort to testing cups of pee, bear in mind a few things. Firstly, entering into high school and being just 15, your son is exposed to the whole host of teenage social pressures and hormonal changes. What could be drug use could also be hormones, and vice-a-versa. Some of the classic signs to watch out for, for drug abuse, are: change in sleep habits, depression, lack of personal hygiene, changes in personality, secretiveness, withdrawal from daily activities. Now, while these are signs of drug use,
your son could also just be not sleeping well, or upset about something, or being moody because he’s a teenager, or just changing because he’s growing. It really is hard to tell. Obviously, it’s better to err on the side of caution, but I would start by just talking to your son about durgs and seeing what his reaction is. Defensive? Hidden? Comical? Proceed from there. A good dose of maternal instinct will probably help as well And, if you’re still unsure then maybe you just go for the test. But make sure you stay vigilant and considerate of all the possibilities before you get there.

oogle is the first web company to reveal its global electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This is part of a concerted effort to become more transparent about its energy use as it opens new data centers, purchases additional buildings, hires more employees and encourages consumers to use its cloud-based services. The exact figures Google representatives have released are to help researchers and policy makers understand how the massive explosion of Internet usage and cloud computing is contributing to global energy consumption. So what exactly does it take to power Google? Apparently, 260 million watts of energy, used continuously, across the globe. What does this mean in real person terms? That amount of energy is the equivalent to the power used by all the homes in cities like VA or Irvine, CA (i.e. about 200,000 )81 )$&76 Richmond, homes!). f you’ve seen The Fifth Element, then we’re kind of behind on our car innovation. Based off of that, our cars should be flying by now! Well, while we’re not flying around in our cars yet, automobile technological may look drastically different in 20 years than what we’re used to. You know where we’re headed with this—the proliferation of computer-controlled cars. We are already seeing a production of cars that can park themselves. Soon enough parking is going to switch to driving it self. The car will have a sensor that can detect how far one car is away from another, the street light change and a stop sign. Cars will be fully equipped with computers. Not only that, but we’re due to see other improvements. Sound systems are increasingly being designed to supply more headphones and mp3 sockets. The amount of radio stations will increase; we already have the option of having Sirius XM radio, but as time goes on we should expect more options for radio stations. Moreover, time will bring more cars with Internet capabilities in them that would work with the GPS to find routes that are shorter, faster and contain less traffic. Cars will soon be equipped with better and safer safety equipment—reusable airbags and extra sensors in the car that advise you how to avoid an accident. Some of this is already in effect. For example, the Audi’s sensors monitor wet roads and the Cadillac has optional infrared night vision. And of course, newer cars will be produced with the environment in mind. Such cars will have bodies made of carbon fibers, carrying fuel from hydrogen fuel cell or hybrid technology. We will be seeing more cars with just two seats in a motorcycle shape where one person in the front and one in the back. Making bodies of the car like that will divide the traffic out on the street almost in half.
