little while ago, I found out about this woman Ellen (name has been changed). Ellen was a 41-year-old woman who had finally gotten pregnant with her first child. She and her husband had been trying for a very long time to conceive, and at the ripe age of 41 she became pregnant with a little girl. You’d think this would be the happiest time of her life, but it was tainted when a doctor informed her that she had a brain tumor. To combat it she’d have to undergo six months of Chemotherapy. However, to do so Ellen would have to give up her unborn baby. That was it. That was her horrible, impossible, unsettling choice: her life or the life of her unborn child. Ellen chose her baby. She did not get Chemotherapy, gave birth to a healthy girl and got to hold her baby exactly one time before she passed away. No one can deny the story is a sad one. But, after it sinks in and the sadness ebbs, I’m sure people will have their opinions. Obviously, you’ll have the bunch that’ll call Ellen irresponsible or selfish for bringing a child into the world that is only to remain motherless. In my opinion, Ellen was selfless and courageous. To choose the life of another above your own is an impeccable sacrifice. It doesn’t seem that a lot of people in the world would
surrender their own well being, wants, wishes, plans or needs for the sake of someone else’s. And yet, every so often, in the face of trouble or turmoil or fear, these acts of selflessness rise up—those firefighters and people on the street that ran to help in the midst of 9/11 or the countless kindnesses of strangers in the wake of natural disasters such as those that hit New Orleans or Haiti are prime examples. While these types of acts are beautiful, they are not enough. We shouldn’t remember the rest of humanity and its strife in only tumultuous or tragic situations. We should always act within the understanding that we as individuals walk, live, breath, and be among billions of other people. With the upcoming New Year, I hope everyone will make a little room on their lists of resolutions and resolve to take an opportunity to put someone else before themself. Because Ellen did that, her daughter will live knowing how important her life was to her mother. Let us resolve to make sure everyone gets to feel important to someone else. Yours very truly, Maria “If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples, then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.” — George Bernard Shaw

Yeah, you wrote all of their positions on all the important issues that we’re gonna see in all the debates. But, they all sound the same. oming to the states in 1979, 18-year-old Alex was iintroduced to drugs. As typically goes such a story, he quickly became addicted to hard drugs like heroin, cocaine, oxycontin, and etc. Alex’s story is not unique in its beginning, or even its middle. Luckily, it is unique in its ending. Alex was able to battle and prevail against the downward spiral that is the everyday man’s drug addiction, with the help of the often overlooked “12 step program.” As Alex describes, “addicts say they are not getting high, they are getting well. It’s a sickness when you need to do something (like drugs) to get ‘well’.” His life spiraled into a very low and dark place, and as a young guy he became morbidly obese and lost all control. Nobody understood where he was coming from and nobody could help him. What’s worse, he found that his family, especially his wife “suffered the most.” “My wife is type of person who will sacrifice her happiness for the sake of her children.” Alex’s wife gave him every possible chance to save his life and family for their children, and even became so desperate that she almost left him. He was trapped by a disease that left “The disease of addiction is the devil, it looks appealing and a lot of fun in the beginning. It can turn into a nightmare when the high part stops.”

Word on the Street him feeling powerless. This is usually where such stories end for far too many of those dealing with an addiction. Luckily, Alex’s did not. It was in 1994, when Alex realized that he had a growing family and a life that he wanted to be around for; he then found his way to a detox facility in Florida. At 40 years old, Alex was ready to turn his life around. Even after successfully going through the detox, Alex went on to join the 12-step program he’d heard of before. There, he learned that “recovery comes from the therapeutic value of one addict to another. This program helps you to live life one day at a time, battling this evil disease.” Alex’s story has had a happy ending. But do not be fooled, he says, “the disease of addiction is the devil, it looks appealing and a lot of fun in the beginning. It can turn into a nightmare when the high part stops. People turn into thieves, robbers; women turn to prostitution, just to get the drugs.” Alex would like to let people who are suffering know that there is help out there. They have the opportunity to save their own lives. “Someone who can beat this disease needs constant recovery. I now help others in order to help myself.” Alex, who has been clean for ten years, consistently visits the fellowship that saved him to help other suffering addicts disarm this disease. It was his fear of losing himself and his family that got him to take the wheel of his own life. He now works to help people find the value in their own lives and the courage to fight for it.

o one likes taxes. No matter how much of a given they are, how necessary they are or how allegedly helpful they are. No one likes taxes. Period. Among the most hotly debated and recent fuel of this hatred is that our tax system seems very unfairly distributed amongst the population. As it currently stands, and as most people complain, we have those with lower incomes paying the brunt of the taxes while the wealthiest of Americans get to hear words like “cuts” and “breaks.” It seems, however, that the tide is finally turning. $ Between the second quarter of 2009 and the fourth quarter of 2010, our nation’s total income rose by $528 billion. Of that economic growth, $464 billion went to pretax corporate profits while just $7 billion went to wages and salaries. In other words, 88% of the brief recovery went to corporate profits and just 1%—that’s right, 1%—went to workers. $ Political commentator and strategist Sally Kohn states, “It’s not that working Americans aren’t working hard. Worker productivity has risen steadily, but wages have still been stagnant. But the income of the top 1% of Americans? Rapidly on the rise. $ At what point do we realize enough is enough—that giving more and more money to big business and the super-rich will never translate into more jobs, better wages and a better economy but simply more yachts and luxury villas? Thanks to the Bush tax cuts, the super-rich paid less on their federal income tax than many middle class Americans paid. Multibillionaire Warren Buffett pays a lower percentage of income tax than everyone else in his office, including the secretaries, reports CNN.Political enthusiast Bob Markowitz says, “while Obama promised to move away from the Bush era tax policy, we have yet to see any drastic change—largely because of the Republican Congress’ unwillingness to negotiate.” But could all that be changing? Billionaires, Warren Buffett included, have begun making comments to the media that they don’t need to be coddled anymore or protected. They told Republicans, via the press, that they can take the taxes because they are, after all, billionaires! LinkedIn CEO, Jeff Weiner, agreed that billionaires should be taxed. He said, “I’d be open to paying more taxes, and I admires Warren Buffett, so I’d be open to the Buffett rule, too.” $ Perhaps, now that the Republicans have gotten the green light from the rich, we will finally be able to start closing the gap.

Is Single-Sex Education
the Answer?
O
ver a century of debate leaving parents and educators still stumped: what is better, co-ed or single-sex secondary schooling? On one hand, there is no certainty that omitting co-ed education for the young men and women of tomorrow will better them in anyway. In fact, many say that it will take away from their ability to coordinate in a world made up of two sexes. Tenth grader Felix Gershbeyn stated that single sex education is a bad idea and school would be boring if it were that way. Human nature, even in reference to early stages of life, including tales of Adam and Eve, suggests that men and women should co-exist. So why would anyone want to separate the boys from the girls through their education? The experts say: “In co-ed schools, day after day, boys and girls really get to know, understand and learn how to cope with each other.” Licensed Psychologist Gloria Meaux explains: “The real world isn’t composed of all boys and all girls, and so [by dividing the sexes] you delay that process of socialization and working those communication skills out.” Not surprisingly, the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools (NCGS) believes single-sex schools provide a superior education. A study by the group shows that in co-educational classrooms, girls often

contend with fewer opportunities to participate, pressure to conform to stereotypes, lowered teacher expectations, unequal sports opportunities, and insufficient female role models. With some students, single sex schooling is an idea to consider. Eighth grader Michelle Patlakh said, “I think it won’t affect my learning and I would think its pretty positive—I think boys will distract too much.” It appears that single sex education cannot be categorized as neither good nor bad, rather it is considered a preference.

Scams
n life there are many uncertainties, so it is important you take caution in the decisions you make. Many times we find ourselves seeking advice from someone or paying for something even if we are not sure that it can help us or if it’s totally legitimate. Most of us find ourselves in desperation and without proper preparation (fact checking) we get involved in things that may lead us to disappointment and most times a rip-off. Psychics are the perfect example of this. Humans tend to panic in times of weakness, finding themselves looking for answers. In search of these answers, they find themselves looking for psychics and here is where they become victims of scam. There are endless phone numbers, testimonials, etc. online relating to psychics who are not necessarily who they say they are, nor do they provide the services they claim to. It is shocking to discover that in the psychic industry of today, out of every four people who call themselves psychic, maybe only one is actually a genuine psychic with true abilities. To these faux psychics, greed is the answer. They care little about the psychological or emotional damage that their scam may cause to those looking for reassurance and guidance. A genuine psychic will provide you with personal information about yourself that is not common knowledge; this is how they prove they are truly connecting with you. As in any industry, there are real professionals with real skills out there using their abilities for evil purposes. Be on guard so you don’t fall victim to this common psychic scam.
A
mans all traditionally gave their soon to be executed prisoners a final meal. In pre-modern Europe, granting the condemned a last meal was a superstitious act. As explained in “Last Meals on Death Row,” In accepting the last meal the condemned was believed to forgive the executioner, the judge, and witnesses. The ritual was supposed to prevent the condemned from returning as a ghost or to haunt those responsible for their killing. As a superstitious precaution, the better the food and drink, the safer the condemned’s oath of truce. Today, most states provide a meal a day or two before execution, calling it the “special meal.” This meal is a modern day “final supper” honoring the prisoner’s final hours. What does this superstition look like in modern day? Well, it’s showcased in the film, “Law Abiding Citizen,” a movie filmed in our very own city of Philadelphia. Actor Gerard Butler plays prisoner Clyde Shelton, who is offered a deal when he is asked to make a confession. Butler only agrees to this if, in return, he is to receive a final meal from Del Frisco’s, one of Philadelphia’s fine steak houses. Not a bad choice, as anyone who has eaten at Del Fresco’s would agree. But could this be a dying tradition? For instance, though the death house tradition of customized last meals dates back 87 years in Texas, the state has recently abolished all special last meal requests after condemned prisoner Lawrence Russell Brewer requested a huge last meal then did not eat any of it, saying he was not hungry. The request consisted of two chicken-fried steaks with gravy and sliced onions; a triple-patty bacon cheeseburger; a cheese omelet with ground beef, tomatoes, onions, bell peppers and jalapeños; a bowl of fried okra with ketchup; one pound of barbecued meat with half a loaf of white bread; three fajitas; a meat-lover’s pizza (topped with pepperoni, ham, beef, bacon and sausage); one pint of Blue Bell ice cream; a slab of peanut-butter fudge with crushed peanuts; and three root beers (normally nonalcoholic). The abolition followed a complaint by a Texas Senator, John Whitmire, who called the meal “inappropriate.”
TATTOO Addiction
ddictions are not just for drugs and alcohol anymore, folks. Today’s newest addiction: tattoos. There are characteristics of tattooing that can place it in an “addictive” category. Labeling those with many tattoos as addicts is unfair, unrealistic, and rarely based on fact. Each person has his or her own individual reason for getting tattoos and it is impossible to know for sure what a person’s reason is appreciation of art, honoring a loved one, to feel included, boredom), unless he or she states it. It is, we admit, a strange addiction given the fact that the tattooing process is emotionally and physically intense. However, that may be the exact reason people find themselves addicted to it. As written on Webmd.com, “Physically, the process causes the body to release high levels of endorphins to cope with the pain: the same endorphins which are released during strenuous physical exercise and other periods of physical stress.” Many people say that actions like running make them feel good, because of the endorphin release, and the same holds true for tattoos. In order for someone to be considered addicted to tattoos, he or she would have to become physically or emotionally dependent on the process of tattooing. In some cases, this may happen. Some people use tattoos to dull emotional pain, for example, while others may become attached to the rush of endorphins released during the tattooing process. If someone chooses to get a new tattoo rather than coping with a situation, or pays for a tattoo before securing the rent, he or she may be addicted to tattoos. Though, more often and more likely, a tattoo is not an addiction but a form of expression. Luckily, for now, categorizing excessive tattooing as an addiction instead of an expression is the exception and not the rule. December 2011•Insight 7

Later in Life
tatistics show that the average American woman lives to the age of 80. Arguably, if she can and wants to conceive a child at 55, she will live to see her child grow up. But, would that be ethical? Some women allow themselves to be more selective about their mates, others feel they want to achieve more in their life before bearing children, others just don’t feel ready until later in life. The result is that a good portion of pregnancies are occurring later in a woman’s life. Surveys conducted in 2010–2011 reveal that about half of the participants considered it unethical for a woman to give birth past the age of 45. In fact, it is after the age of 45 that increasing numbers of women end up turning to technologies such as IVF, or invitro fertilization, to have children because their age has become a roadblock to bearing children. Many opponents to these technologies argue that if our bodies are telling us no, we are not supposed to be forcing it. Yet, others fight back. Samantha (34, Philadelphia) argues, “Who is to say who can or cannot have a baby?” There are many medical and moral aspects to consider around this topic. Having a child later in life can cause serious health problems for both the mother and child. The risk of stillbirth increases by 40% and do risk of the baby being born prematurely, or the child being born with Autism or with Down syndrome. Share your insight with us. Do you feel it is okay for women to wait until middle age to conceive a child?
The Power of Napping Y
ou’re at work, its gloomy outside and your mind is getting foggy. Sound familiar? Those “five hour energy” commercials would call this your “two-thirty feeling.” A nap sounds pretty good when one of these comes around, doesn’t it? This is when you consider moving to Spain just to take part in the daily afternoon siesta or switching professions so that you can become a kindergarten teacher and take advantage of nap times. Now it doesn’t seem that the government is going to budge any time soon and give us a legal 20 minute nap time in the middle of the day, but they should; and, here are three great reasons why:
1
A solid 20-30 minute nap helps you think more accurately and clearly. A study by NASA proved that a power nap improves cognitive functions by a whopping 40 percent! Neurons are recharged, resulting in enhanced brain function, creative thinking, efficiency, and ability to learn new information. You could even use this evidence to convince your boss that letting you take that little nap is actually helping you come up with better ideas, thus bringing in more money for the company. A power nap (it’s called a power nap for a reason), restores your stamina, energy, and endurance. It is difficult to find any motivation to produce quality work unless you feel fully energized and awake. Most of us need that extra kick, so we drink cup after cup of coffee, but that’s not healthy and it gets old. So a power nap is a much better idea. Heart disease is the top killer in America. We are told to eat right, take supplements, and exercise in order to prevent heart attacks. But what about power naps? Did anyone tell you that part? A 30 minute nap a few times a week can lower the risk of heart disease by 35 percent. Why? Mainly because power naps significantly reduce stress.

Life-Saving Blood Test
C
hronic inflammation can cause a series of health concerns such as: tissue damage, blood clots, plaque buildup in arteries, etc. How do we test for inflammation? An inexpensive, simple blood test can actually test how much inflammation there is in your blood vessels: the “CRP” or creactive protein. To guard against heart disease, along with cholesterol checks, every person should consider having this blood test done once a year. This test is effective in measuring cardiovascular risk that blood pressure, smoking habits, cholesterol checks, and family history. A heightened CRP means you are 4 times more likely to have dangerous plaque blocking your arteries. The downside is that a CRP test cannot show where the inflammation is located or what is causing it. In which case, other tests are needed to find the cause and location of the inflammation. Elevated CRP levels are not just linked to heart disease, but also to arthritis, Alzheimer’s, certain cancers, and diabetes. Being that the CRP test is relatively new, don’t expect your doctor to suggest it. It’s up to you to request it next time you go for a checkup! “Even if your cholesterol is low, an elevated level of CRP can show a high risk” says Olga, a nurse at Prestige Home Care Agency. “We need to make this blood test a standard procedure so we can save lives.”
Quick Health Fact! It is possible for you to survive even after the removal of the spleen, the stomach, one kidney, one lung, 75% of the liver, 80% of the intestines, and almost every organ from the pelvic and groin area

SECRET CURE
for Common Cold
W
e’ve all heard of eating chicken soup, taking vitamin C, and drinking tea with honey for a cold. But, there’s a secret remedy which many people have not heard that can get you feeling better in no time. This secret is called “Acerola,” a bushy plant that prefers warm weather, grows south of Texas, and is native to the West Indies. It is a bright red, small sized fruit that resembles a cherry, with a very sweet, yet slightly acidic flavor. It is commonly used in South America in juices, cocktails, and ice creams. Some people refer to it as “Barbados cherry, Antilles cherry, or Cereso.” This not your ordinary cherry; it packs in an extremely impressive punch. It has 60 times more vitamin C than an orange, magnesium, potassium, niacin, thiamine, riboflavin, and vitamins B1 and B2. WHO GETS TO DATE A “10?”
C
osmopolitan Magazine did some research about what everyone wants to know: who gets to date a “10.” Obviously, we all assume we’re “10s;” but, let’s get past what our mothers have been telling us since birth (“honey, there is no one more beautiful than you) and face it: not everyone can be a “10.” And, in fact, not everyone can even be with a 10. The poll asks how attractive guys and girls think they have to be (from “1-10”) to date a girl who is a “10.” The guys report that they only have to be a “5” in order to get a woman that is a “10”

Kissing
UNDER THE MISTLETOE istletoe is a parasite. Yes, mistletoe is a poisonous, parasitic plant— not exactly arousing. So, why are we all so pulled to kiss under it? The literature (which I’ll tell you about, since you probably won’t go and read it yourself) describes the tradition as follows: “The mistletoe is still hung up in farmhouses and kitchens at Christmas, and the young men have the privilege of kissing the girls under it, plucking each time a berry from the bush. When the berries are all plucked the privilege ceases.” While we’re not plucking berries any more, we’ve still be kissing under the plant for ages! The tradition comes from Norse Mythology, specifically the story of Baldur. So in honor of mistletoe and the holidays, allow us to have story time about the start of mistletoe make-out sessions: Baldur’s mother was the Norse goddess, Frigga. When Baldur was born, Frigga made each and every plant, animal and inanimate object promise not to harm Baldur. But Frigga overlooked the mistletoe plant—and the mischievous god of the Norse myths, Loki, took advantage of this oversight. Ever the prankster, Loki tricked one of the other gods into killing Baldur with a spear fashioned from mistletoe. The demise of Baldur, a vegetation deity in the Norse myths, brought winter into the world, although the gods did eventually restore Baldur to life. After which Frigga pronounced the mistletoe sacred, ordering that from now on it should bring love rather than death into the world. Happily complying with Frigga’s wishes, any two people passing under the plant from now on would celebrate Baldur’s resurrection by kissing under the mistletoe. So there you have it. Now that you know . . . pucker up everyone!

Love is good for you! A study by the Stanford University School of Medicine found that there is a very specific spot in our brains that registers “love;” and that, in the EXACT same spot, we also register pain. The study goes further to prove that because both feelings are in the same location, you can actually decrease pain you may be feeling by thinking of the one you love. I guess it is true what they say: Love Heals All!

ith over 35 years of experience, fast service, and top rankings from Allure Magazine, the International Salon in Rittenhouse (1714 Sansom St.) is our top pick for Best in Brazilian waxing. Owner Emma Sherby has been in the beauty business since 1976 and has made a strong reputation for herself amongst those partaking in Brazilian waxes. “Brazilian waxing became popular here about 15 years ago,” says Emma. “I had an edge because I have a nursing degree which helps me be more aggressive and safe when working on a customer,” she said. Waxing is a part of the beauty scene, a repetitive routine most women need for hair maintenance. Emma feels wax is the most successful form of hair removal because your hair doesn’t grow back for 4 weeks and with most of her recurring clients can last 6-7 weeks. The Insight Experience: International Salon truly offers the fastest service. Some salons allot 45 minutes for a Brazilian wax, at this salon you are in and out, ten minutes tops. You won’t find any painful, yellow wax here, International Salon only uses chocolate wax, it smells good, is “most successful,” and less painful! Grade: A+
WHAT Jackie O HAS TO SAY
haven’t already, then you need to ItoricfpickyouConversations up a copy of Jacqueline Kennedy: Hison Life with John F. Ken-
nedy, by Caroline Kennedy. A few months after John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1964, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis sat down with her dear friend and historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr. for eight and a half hours of interview. On Jackie’s order, the tapes were to be kept locked away for 50 years. Jackie’s daughter, Caroline, has allowed their release slightly before schedule and they are recorded in writing in Historic Conversations. The book does an impeccable job at filling out and adding depth to the icon and image of Jackie Kennedy that America has grown to love. Not only are Jackie’s words feeding a curiosity about her that many have had for decades, but the interview humanizes her. You can actually hear things in the background like Jackie lighting up a cigarette, or putting ice into a drink. The emotionality is all there. To lure you into buying this awesome book (though we’re sure we don’t have to) we’ve included some notable excerpts from the interview: On the night of JFK’s inauguration she was recovering from a Caesarean section and could only make it to the inaugural ball because the White House doctor gave her Dexedrine. On JFK’s worries, Jackie recalls how he had told a historian that Abraham Lincoln was remembered as a great president only because he was assassinated immediately after winning the Civil War. JFK also lamented to her after the Bay of Pigs disaster that if he was ever going to get assassinated, that they would shoot him then. On feminism Jackie said “women should never be in politics, we’re just not suited for it” She later also said “I get all of my opinions from my husband.” Even her daughter Caroline stated that she was horrified by her mother’s old fashioned views. Martin Luther King Jr., Jackie called a “phony” because she was told by JFK “of a tape that the FBI had of Martin Luther King Jr. when he was [in D.C.] for the freedom march . . . he was caling up all these girls and arranging for a part of men and women, I mean, sort of an orgy in the hotel and everything.” This is ironic considering Jackie knew that JFK had extra-marital affairs and possibly untrue, as some dispute that FBI director, J. Edgar Hoover was merely trying to damage King’s reputation. On Lyndon Johnson, Jackie speaks quite negatively. She describes him as bitter, ahrd-drinking and uninspired. She even alludes that it was Johnson that may have had something to do with JFK’s death. She reveals, JFK had reservations about Johnson as well, that he told Jackie “Oh, God, can you ever imagine what would happen to the country if Lyndon were president?” On JFK’s many illnesses, Jackie was very candid. She described how his botched surgeries in 1954 and 1955 forever hurt him, forcing him to fake recovery for the sake of appearing strong. “He’d walk bout the Senate looking wonderful and tan … and then he’d come home and go in to a hospital bed.” Jackie went on to say of JFK “He was always sick and in bed. He had scarlet fever … blood trouble … anemia.” The illnesses made it impossible to put on his shoes and even the Novocain shots he took “didn’t do any good.” Her time in the white house Jackie calls her “happiest years” with JFK because, with the press idolizing her, she felt that she had finally made her husband proud. Prior to that she felt everyone in the American press throught her a snob. She recalls: Jack never made me feel that I was a liability to him, but I was. Then we got in the White House, all the things that I’d always done suddenly became wonderful.”

re you aware of a billion dollar sport that’s currently the third most watched live sporting event, second only to the Olympics? We’re not talking about throwing around a ball here. We are talking about a high speed, extreme sport called Formula 1 racing (F1/the Grand Prix). Centered on precision, immaculate design, and a dedicated fan base, Formula 1 racing is without a doubt the most extreme, exotic, and expensive motor racing sport. A driver and a manufacturer are awarded the honor of being the best at the end of every session by Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). For each lap a car completes, the cost is almost $1,500 in tires, brake, and fuel fees. Toyota, McLaren-Mercedes, and Ferrari, who are F1’s biggest spenders, were asked to give a breakdown of their costs (in millions): $64 - research , $2.8—car-manufacturing costs, $77.5—testing cars, $29.71—operating cars at races, $68.53 - team salaries, $180—engines, $39.50—driver salaries, $12.97—for travel and accommodations, and $11.5—corporate entertainment. The money spent each season goes into the billions as the competition and desire to be the top constructor and racer continues to rise every year. Formula 1 racing is the most expensive sport with the highest payouts. Statistics show that Formula 1 evokes emotion and passion in all of the countries it visits and it would be nowhere without the swarms of dedicated fans that adorn the grandstands on race day.

T
he ‘Olympic Games’ come around every four years and with each event, there are new sports thrown into the mix. We’re used to the basics like swimming, ice skating, running, and gymnastics; but more and more people are running campaigns for certain sports to enter the Olympics, which is no easy task. Some recent additions to the games include extreme sports such as: BMX racing, snowboarding, ice climbing, and some out of the ordinary sports including: team table tennis, women’s steeplechase race (a running obstacle course), fencing, and race-walking. As popular as football is in America, it hasn’t been able to enter the Olympic Games due to difficult requirements. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) requires that the team sport be played in at least 75 nations, and those countries must cover at least four continents. Unfortunately American football has not reached that status in other nations yet. They may have a chance if they can prove the popularity of the sport around the world. While some sports are added to the roster, some are periodically removed if there is not enough competition among countries or if the sport is too expensive. As new sports emerge, they have a chance to be added to the Olympic Games, and it’s always fun to debate which ones are worthy enough to compete for the gold.

ith continuous advances in technology, our jobs are being replaced by computers. Most recently, the postal service has experienced a decline in postal mail because people are going paperless and finding that electronic mail is faster and more convenient for them (not to mention it cuts down on junk mail). Many people do not have computers and the older generations prefer the nostalgia of paper mail, but they are probably not enough to keep the Postal Service in business. The U.S. postal service has already made plans to shut down over 4,000 offices and has a $9 billion deficit. They have tried to keep up by offering internet services at post offices and designing phone applications, but these alternatives were not favored by the public. The postal service is not the only casualty. Look at book stores such as Barnes and Nobles or Borders. These stores are shutting down one by one. The introduction of the electronic Nook and the Kindle is killing the bookstore industry. Why lug around heavy books when you can download any book you want to read and use a lightweight electronic device to read, research, and play games all in one? We are facing a time of enormous technological advancement, but could convenience be leading to unemployment? Let us know what you think!

PUSH TO STaRT
four legged monster robot called the “LS3” or “AlphaDog,” is the new hype of the tech world. Designed to aid U.S. Marines, this “dog” can run, walk, climb, and carry up to 400 lbs for 20 miles, for over 24 hours straight! It looks like a large black robot with 4 legs, punching the ground ferociously. It’s a step up from the “BigDog” introduced in 2007. The old model made a horrendous buzzing sound and wasn’t as powerful. The most advanced and astonishing aspect is that the AlphaDog can easily pick itself up in the case that it is physically knocked over by an outside source. It uses computer vision to follow a leader, instead of needing a driver, and it can travel to any assigned area using modern GPS. Imagine how powerful and useful a machine like this can be? The first version of the completed AlphaDog is set for launch in 2012.

hen I was purchasing my car, the “push to start” option was on my top 5 priorities list. We live in a time where convenience rules. Should I reach in my pocket and count the cash in my wallet, or should I just swipe my debit card? Should I get up from my comfy couch and change the channel directly on the TV or can I just hold a wireless remote in my hand? Everything we do is to maximize our time and convenience. Let’s face it, we are one lazy society; but there are some things that are truly beneficial to us, and not just fuel for our laziness. For someone like me who tends to lock my keys inside the car a bit too often, a magical push to start button is something I can’t stop smiling about. With a push to start option, it is more difficult to lock yourself out of your car or lock keys in the trunk, because the system will sense it and prevent the user from locking them in. The top reason why this feature is useful is because it is designed to minimize theft and break-ins. It’s almost impossible to unlock the steering wheel or start the engine without the assigned remote unit. Each unit contains a chip with an ID code that the car must recognize. If the car cannot match the ID code to the key code, it won’t start. These features make the push to start feature a necessity that only benefits the consumer.

A Dose of Insight My brother is leaving for Iraq, he is the only immediate family I communicate with. I’m afraid we will grow apart or that we won’t be able to continue a relationship when he leaves, any advice? ✽ First, I want to express gratitude for your brother and his service for our country; he is making a noble sacrifice and I appreciate him for his courage. Regarding communication, I understand how difficult it is to lose regular communication with someone. Some ideas to get through this temporary
lapse include writing letters to your brother, keeping a journal, and setting up times with your brother to talk. Additionally, it may be a good time to rekindle or foster relationships with others in your life. Often, absence makes us appreciate others more so don’t discount that. Good luck!
My best friend of 10 years who I’m supposed to be able to tell everything to doesn’t know I am gay. I’m too scared to tell her because she is not supportive of a gay lifestyle, what should I do? ✽ Tell her. It’s as simple as that. Having a friendship based on a lie is like having no friendship at all and you both deserve to operate on the truth. Moreover, many times we are against what we don’t fully under-
stand or don’t have a personal connection to. So, hopefully, through your reveal, you can change her views on the LGBT community through personal education and tolerance. Good luck!
I’ve always been a procrastintor. I am now a full time employee and procrastination is hurting me because I can’t complete my work projects on time. I get too stressed out from putting it off, what do I do? ✽ Get yourself together because while you are procrasti-nating, someone else is thinking of how they could do YOUR project on time. Once your company realizes that, that person who wants your job will be IN and you will be OUT! One simple fix is to write a to-do list with deadlines so you can prioritize your projects or you could organize your projects into files
marked by their urgency. Once you complete each one, the satisfaction of checking each item off the list may give you the confidence and pride to continue working hard, leaving the procrastination behind. Whatever tricks work for you, do it fast before you slow down to a screeching halt . . . on your sofa! Good luck!
Will it make a good first impression to invite my significant other to meet my family during holiday occasions? ✽ Good impression on whom? Your mate? Your family? If on your mate, taking him or her to meet your family is definitely a good impression but only if you are ready for the commitment level it implies. One piece of advice is to always keep your actions at the commitment 16 Insight• December 2011
level you are prepared to take on. For your family, the last thing they want to do is to get all wrapped up in some “ancillary” person in your life. So, the question is not whether it’s a good impression, it’s whether you are ready for what comes afterwards. Good luck!
Intuitive Zodiac Signs
O
prah Winfrey, the billionaire mogul, former talk show host, and business woman has recently declared that trusting her gut was paramount to her lasting success and that she’s trust-ed it her entire life; making mistakes only when she didn’t listen. If trusting your gut is true for the rest of us mere mortals, then choosing a mate or a business partner with this gift of intuition increases chances of our own success. It is worth noting that Oprah is an Aquarius (her birthday is on January 29th), which means the following zodiac signs should have even better intuition than her and likely more success: Aries (March 21—April 19): a “fire” sign, Ariesans are known for their courage and leadership qualities, doesn’t need to necessarily plan the every move, and are spontaneous. Because of this gift of intuition, people born under this sign are generally not fearful and are good multi-taskers (although they are known to not finish projects). Some famous Aries are Sarah Jessica Parker, Sir Elton John, and Marlon Brando. LLeo (July 23—August 22): another “fire” sign, Leo’s like to be in the spotlight, are straightforward, and are emotionally aware of people around them. People born under this sign are brilliant and intense, with a playful and loving nature. Some famous Leo’s are Jennifer Lopez, Charlize Theron, and Wesley Snipes. SSagittarius (November 22—December 21): yet another “fire” sign (do we see a pattern here?), people born under this sign are choc full of ideas and always seek to be more aware of surroundings. They also seek knowledge and wisdom and are generally optimistic. Some famous Sagittarians are Caroline Kennedy, Tina Turner, and Gianni Versace. PPisces (February 19—March 20): The “water” sign, Pisceans are very aware of interdependency and are very spiritual. They also express themselves emotionally and have a deep compassion for those in need. Some famous Pisceans are Ted Kennedy, Spike Lee, and Cindy Crawford.

Finding Love Online
If you’re single and looking, there is barely any time in the day to meet someone, much less make a significant connection. The chances of coyly meeting someone while out at the park or at the grocery store are lessened due to work, family obligations, headphones, hiding behind sunglasses, or constant conversations on the phone. In fact, a recent survey found that 17 percent of newly married couples met through an online dating site. My Insight Magazine is here to help you find your match, here are the top three sites to find interesting people . . . and perhaps love. 1. Facebook (via www.yangutu.com). Facebook??!! Yes, Facebook was already being used to “vet” potential suitors but now, a new app, www.yangutu.com, allows Facebook users to leverage their friend’s contacts to find new acquaintances who share common interests and geography. Almost 1 million people have downloaded this app and you should too! 2. Lavalife.com. This site allows users to post up to three separate profiles under various sections including Dating, Intimate Encounters, and Relationships. It also allows for members to share private photo galleries, use video chat, and basically “run up on” whomever you choose without having the site make the decision for you! 3. True.com. If you happen to be more cautious with whom you meet and want to know upfront whether a potential connection has been married or has a criminal past, this site is for you. In fact, those with felony convictions can’t even communicate with other members so you’re safer already. It’s more expensive than the other sites but you pay for peace of mind!

HoroScopes Aries (March 21-April 20). You love an adventure. This month will be full of them, and you will be accompanied by someone you have had your eye on for quite some time. Taurus (April 21st–May 21st). If you were to ask for a raise at work, this would be the perfect time to do it. All of your hard efforts are being noted, and you deserve to be rewarded. Gemini (May 22nd–June 21st). You will need a lot of attention on the love front. If you have been alone for a while, do not scare away your new love interest with your plans for the future.
1.
Cancer (June 22nd–July 22nd). If you go on a trip this month you are sure to meet someone special. You will have a lot on your mind and a lot of important decisions to make. Use your heart, not just your logic. Leo (July 23rd–August 23rd). Focus on your work this month. Things will be a little hectic at home, so you will need some you-time to get away. Virgo (August 24th–Sept. 22nd). With the Sun back in your sign, you can expect this month to bring new things into your life. This month will be a smooth-sail at work, in love, and with friendships. Libra (Sept. 23rd–Oct. 23rd). Stop testing your luck, things are not looking in your favor right now. This is not a safe time to gamble with you money or your heart for that matter.
2.
Scorpio (Oct. 24th–Nov. 22nd). Business is picking up and there will be new ideas and projects to tackle. Act fast, because with Venus on your side things can’t possibly get any better. Sagittarius (Nov. 23rd–Dec. 21st). Pluto will bring some money troubles and emotional turmoil. You will need some time alone to think and get back on your feet. Capricorn (Dec. 22nd–Jan. 20th). You have some serious goals, but you will need to remember that patience is a virtue. Your visions are clear just give things time to manifest. Aquarius (Jan. 21st–Feb. 18th). You haven’t been honest with your friends and family. Something is holding you back from being yourself. It would help if you took time to meditate and realize what you want at this time. Pisces (Feb. 19th–March 20th). Based on your decisions in the past, things will start to come together right before your eyes. Everything you have been hoping for will land in your lap. Just be wise enough to welcome it.
