editor’s desk is the year! This is the 2012 year to watch—the election of a new, or re-election of a current,

president, the return of Mad Men to TV (finally!), Leonardo DiCaprio playing what I’m sure will be the greatest Gatsby, oh, and that whole end of the world business right around Christmas time. Yep, we slipped past the rapture by “just this much,” but we have yet to stand up to the prophecy of John Cusack. For those of you that have been living under a rock (a la’ the Geico commercial), here is what the whole “end of the world” is about: While there are a few different alleged warning signs that the world will come to an end this year, the Mayans are the most pronounced theory. Mayan historical books describe the gods first creating three failed worlds, followed by a successful fourth world in which humanity was placed. The Maya Long Count Calendar shows that the previous world ended after 13 b’ak’tuns, or roughly 5,125 years. This “zero date” was set at a point in the past marking the end of the third world and the beginning of the current one, which corresponds to 11 August 3114 BC on our calendar. This means that the fourth world will also have reached the end of its 13th b’ak’tun, or Mayan date 13.0.0.0.0, on December

21, 2012. So, the conspiracy theorists and their friends use this to say that the world will end on that day – that we will all literally die on the 21st. Just about everyone else argues that this is ridiculous. Even those most generously receiving this conspiracy theory say the calendar predicts the end of “the way things are,” which could just as well be a technological, psychological or other “ogical” change in the way the world is, as opposed to Earth just sinking into some black hole. All in all, I don’t think anyone will be making any mistakes by planning events for Christmas or New Years, 2012. But, in the case the world does end . . . well, that would suck. Regardless, at the very least, we’ve got some eleven and a half months in the mean time. In those eleven months, I see no reason why we shouldn’t all knock a few items off our bucket lists. We’re all standing at the front-end of a shiny, brand new year and I know you’re approaching it with at least a few resolutions in mind. So, take your eleven-plus months and resolve to do all those things you resolved to do, and then do some more. In 2012, there is no reason to hold back or to keep chances and opportunities at an arms length. In 2012, don’t deny yourself a better you—make it great! Maria

Student Loan Forgiveness

Obama’s Plan

resident Obama has announced a plan to ease the burden of stuprepayments dent loans on college graduates by capping federal student loan at 10 percent of discretionary income, Reuters reports.

“Our economy needs it right now, and your future could use a boost right now,” Obama said. The president plans to start a program, which could help up to 1.6 million people and reduce their loan payments each month by as much as a couple hundred dollars. “Young people, I need you guys involved; I need you active,” Obama said. The current plan for borrowers enrolled in incomebased payment calls for 15 percent of discretionary income to be paid for 25 years before having their debt forgiven, The New York Times reports. In Obama’s new plan, all remaining debt will be forgiven after 20 years. CNN reports that average student loan debt at four-year colleges was $24,000 for the graduating class of 2009. That data, from the Institute for College Access & Success, includes all private and federal loans. The topic of student loans has also become a contentious political issue for Obama and presidential nominees. Many of the Occupy Wall Street protests in the U.S. have said increasing debt for college graduates is something that needs to be fixed, according to the Washington Post. Maria Marsh, 24, of Philadelphia says, “My college loans have been hanging over me like a black cloud. I can’t find any stable work and the amounts keep growing, it’s getting to a point where I don’t know how I will ever repay them.” Hopefully President Obama’s new plan will help Marsh and millions of others encountering the depth of educational debt.

Unsolved Crimes

n 2007, more than one person a day had been killed in Philadelphia, most of them in the southwest region of the city. Over the past 10 years in Philadelphia, the murder rate has climbed steadily in our city, from just under 300 to more than 400 last year. Half of the killings remain unsolved. Philadelphia’s murder rate has been higher than New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago. When the crime rates just began to raise, Mayor at the time, John Street reflected on this issue stating that it is a social problem in Philadelphia. It has also been brought to our attention that Philadelphia’s poverty rate is the highest of any major U.S. city, with an overwhelming amount of illegal weapons in the hands of city dwellers. At one point in 2006, when Philadelphia’s homicide clearance/solving rates dropped to 56 percent, Mayor Michael Nutter declared a “crime emergency.” To help our city, he hired Charles Ramsey, former police chief in Washington, as police commissioner. Ramsey installed a fresh homicide supervisor, Capt. James Clark, who led a results-based oversight of murder investigations similar to total-quality management methods first employed by Japanese manufacturers. This helped boost Philadelphia’s homicide clearance rate to 75 percent in 2008. In the last two weeks of October 2011, 3153 crimes occurred in Philadelphia. Although the city has bounced back from a severe lack in clearances in the past, it seems as though we can’t beat the crime out of this city, as it continually grows. Insight Magazine tried to contact the Philadelphia Police headquarters for comment, but unfortunately received no response. Philadelphia remains a “community trying to survive the present, in hopes of saving the future.” 4 Insight•January 2012

Word on the Street By Luba Patlakh

MARTIN LUTHER KING, Jr.

O

n January 16, 2012, we commemorate a man valued highly in our nation’s history, Reverend, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King’s honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed on January 20, 1986.” Since then Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, has been a United States federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a man of strong words, sincere thoughts, and most importantly someone who truly longed to find a method of change. Most of us don’t realize it but King’s powerful speeches have left us with many valuable lessons. One including, “We must develop a federal program of public works, retraining, and jobs for all—so that none, white or black, will have cause to feel threatened. . . . There is nothing except shortsightedness to prevent us from guaranteeing an annual minimum and livable income for every American family.” Where Do We Go From Here? August 1967 speech. It is unfortunate that the human populace not only did not follow King’s wise preaching, but today’s society probably has the man turning in his grave. Although our society did not directly follow his direction, we proudly honor Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Philadelphia takes pride in the celebration of this special holiday with several community gatherings and events. An organization called ‘Global Citizen’ is hosting the 17th Annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, which invites volunteers to serve in various projects around the city. Last January, over 75,000 volunteers served in some 1200 projects; the Annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, the largest King Day event in the nation. Since 1996, some 675,000 volunteers across our region have celebrated Dr. King’s legacy by turning their community concerns into volunteer service and ongoing citizen action on King Day and beyond.

We want to help you find a path that will give you the opportunity to make a living and enjoy your job at the same time! (yes, it is possible!) The current recession has brought great changes in the labor market. Jobs that were once considered to be well paid and secure may not even exist today! This creates much confusion in the minds of people who are about to start or change a career. According to career experts, these are the top careers of the New Year:

“Shmeat” to reduce animal cruelty A

s defined by UrbanDictionary.com, Shmeat is “a lab-created meat product; essentially, animal tissue which has been cultured for the purpose of consumption without harm to animals.” Scientists are diligently working so that one day, without harming animals, you can have a serving of shmeat on your plate. Shmeat is grown from a cell culture of animal tissue. “The process is pretty straight forward and the process is similar to how scientists already grow patches of human skin.” “Cells are harvested from a live animal, such as a chicken, pig or cow. The cells are then placed in a special solution of nutrients which mimics the qualities of blood. This nutrient solution will help the cells to multiply where they can then be secured to a spongy sheet which has been soaked with nutrient solution. The sheet is then stretched to increase cell size and protein content. It’s from the combination of this “sheet meat” that shmeat derives its name” (shmeat.com). Shmeat has progressed far enough to where tissue engineers are now looking for funding and founding start-ups in an attempt to get shmeat into your grocery store as soon as possible. They envision that shmeat will one day be harvested in vast quantities with it being an affordable, nutritious and appetizing alternative to what currently goes into processed meats. PETA is also a fan of shmeat and is currently offering a $1 million prize to the first manufacturer and marketer of lab created chicken meat to encourage further research of shmeat. Not only would shmeat reduce the number of animals that people would need to raise and kill for food, those that have been working with shmeat believe that one day it could greatly reduce world hunger while being better for the environment and human health.

Czaristas

oth creative and boastfully entertaining, Irina Bak and Elina Yudilevich are the super star team behind Czaristas, a new company specializing in creative photoshoots that give people the ability to express their inner self or their fantasy-self. They come from creative backgrounds with experience in photography, art, design, and beauty, with much appreciation for ‘the perfect shot’ and ‘the right light,’ this all star duo will capture your expressions with ease and strong dedication. Our client wants to execute an exact vision they have dreamed about. It becomes our responsibility to think outside the box to make it happen for them no matter how grandiose, lavish or out there it might be. We want the experience to be better than what they have imagined,” said the girls. As part of their shoot, they first meet with the client to discuss ideas and concepts for their shoot. In this meeting, they brainstorm ideas and work around your ideal look or form of expression. They help you sort through your own clothing and accessories to finalize the look and idea. To prep for the shoot Elina and Irina arrive several hours ahead of time to complete hair, makeup, and wardrobe. They seek to create the clients vision and want their input, to ensure they are satisfied with the shoot. Irina is a brilliant photographer and while out on the shoot you can find her rolling around on the ground to get the right light, angles, and perfect shot. We had the chance to sit down with the all star team to learn more about where they come from and what their goals are with Czaristas. Question: What exactly do you guys do? Answer: In one word, we empower. We want our clients to feel beautiful and confident. So many girls and guys look in the mirror and dislike what they see. They are not able to see their potential, but we are! People might not realize that celebrities do not just wake up looking as glamorous as they do on the cover of magazines. They have teams of people who create their image using tricks of the trade to achieve the desired effect. So, we thought, why not offer a celebrity style experience to everyday girls and guys! With the combination of Elina’s styling, hair and makeup skills and Irina’s keen photographic eye, we are able to provide a coveted product. A celebrity style photoshoot with all the fixings. Each client is a blank canvas that can be turned into a work of art. Together with the client we thoughtfully sculpt a unique theme for the photoshoot. This is no cookie cutter production. Each girl or guy gets a personal consultation where we figure out our direction. The day of the shoot she or he gets the glam treatment and the final product is a stunning set of professional quality photos. Our goal is to have our client walk away from a CZARistas experience not only with stunning photos, but with a feeling of empowerment and confidence! Q: What inspired you to start this business? A: Initially it was a way to express bottled up creativity. An idea for an extraordinary photograph would start flowing and we immediately move on to figuring out how to make it happen. We started asking friends to be models and canvas for our ideas. Before we knew it, the word was out. Girls were talking about the experience as being unlike any other. Once the phone started ringing, we embraced working with whomever was interested in becoming a Czarista or Czar. The progress into a business was a natural one. Build it and they shall come.

They come and we welcome them with open arms! Q: Why Czaristas? A: When selecting the name we wanted it to be personal and descriptive. We both liked the word “Czaritsa” because it not only relates back to our Eastern European roots but it also means Queen and insinuates the idea of Royalty. We loved that being associated with a royal title would put our clients on a pedestal. To give it a modern day creative spin, we switched it to “CZARista” – a play on the word “Fashionista.” To continue our mighty theme, we crown each girl with the Czarista title, making them a part of the exclusive royal court! Q: How do you feel your company stands apart from other photography agencies? A: There are multiple things that set us apart from the average photography studio. First of all, our packages include hair, make up and styling. All of our clients get customized themes and our undivided attention. Each person is unique and important to us, not just a number in line. Second, being an all female team is also something that differentiates us. We understand how to make a girl look good, how to enhance a girls face and how to dress for their body types. The fact that we are a female team is also beneficial to our male clients as we definitely know how to make a guy look attractive. Last but not least, we pride ourselves to being very down to earth which allows our clients to treat us as though we are their friends and helps them to relax and feel comfortable. At the end of the day, a CZARistas client walks away with amazing photos and a renewed sense of self confidence and empowerment! Q: What is your favorite place to shoot? A: When the weather is cooperative, we love shooting outside. We embrace any location that allows us to take advantage of the natural sunlight, particularly during golden hour. We always love shooting outdoors because it gives a truly free spirited, relaxed experience for our Czaristas or Czars which they all seem to enjoy as well. Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share with us? A: Yes, we want to thank whomever read this article and got to this part of the interview. Thank you for reading, for your interest and support. As our final words, we would like to encourage our reader to never dim your shine for anyone and to always express what you are. Believe in yourself as there is only one you. COME PLAY! ;) Visit Czaristas.com for more information.

Exclusive i n t e r vi e w : dressmaker/designer

R

ussian-born dressmaker Irina Sigal is making quite the impression in the American clothing design world. A native of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, she moved here 18 years ago and has been determined to make her dreams as an American Designer with European flare come true. Sigal aims to provide women with fashion forward pieces that allow them to encompass their personal style, while standing out even for day to day wear. Her collections are far from regular, surprising the fashion public with ultra unique and art-inspired pieces, as well as, one of a kind jewelry. Irina Sigal began her career in fashion as a seamstress working on basic clothing alterations, repairs, and redesign. After finding success in Russia for work on bridal gowns and formal dresses, she decided to pursue her dream of becoming an American designer. Sigal owns her own store, located in Elkins Park,Pa, where she has expanded her services to include custom dressmaking, jackets, suits, and skirts. In 2006 her storefront was recognized with the “Best of Philly 2006” seal, along with a 2007 honor by the Cambridge Who’s Who registry of executives and professionals recognition seal. “With the help of my talented team of seamstresses and the continuing loyalty of returning customers, my small business has really flourished,” Sigal said. Her main focus for the past two decades has been on garment reconstruction and alterations, she has been designing custom pieces for the past few years with high recognition. “I love reconstruction, because you never know what comes your way—I have the pleasure of unusual requests that make my jobs interesting. For example—I have fixed a vintage stuffed animal that just had its 99th birthday; I have made a pillow case out of men’s ties, and enjoyed so much working on a wedding dress for a small dog.” Honored to work with some of the most prestigious stores in Philadelphia including the famous Joann Shepp and Claire Dickson, Sigal remains one of the most unique and humble designers. Sigal tells us she is inspired by beautiful fabrics, cities, fascinating books, and intricate details. “It is women’s visions and personality that inspires my new designs,” she said. Some of Sigal’s latest achievements include, winning first place in Alterations & Tailoring on Philly’s Hot List 2010, followed by recognition in Best of Philly 2011 list as the “Best Couturier.” Her collection was modeled in Philadelphia Fashion Week 2011, during which her designs were used for the brochures front cover. 2011 was an exciting year for this designer; applauded by the Philadelphia fashion scene on the Red Carpet Event at Joan Shepp, participating in a runway show at Valanni Restaurant of Philadelphia, and recognized in the Couture Runway Show, featuring couture collections from National and International luxury designers. We are excited to see what’s in store for designer Irina Sigal in 2012 and coming years. “I hope to continue to create clothing that is made from high quality fabrics and sewn in accordance with the principles of Haute Couture; clothing that is exclusive for every woman, regardless of her age, shape, or size,” Sigal shared.

By Luba Patlakh tatistically known as the fifth-most-populous city in the United States, Philadelphia is rich in culture, fine dining, strong education, and some of the country’s most advanced medical facilities. Philadelphia is also known as the commercial, cultural, and educational center of the Delaware Valley. A grand place to live, Philadelphia is not known to be pretentious, but rather a very approachable and comfortable city where people aren’t as stuck up as NYC, but still encompasses that same uber fun, fulfilling city feel. Coined as the city of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia was founded on October 27, 1682 by William Penn, who planned a city along the Delaware River to serve as a port and place for government. The city grew rapidly, and by the 1750s Philadelphia was the largest city and busiest port in the original 13 American colonies. During the American Revolution, Philadelphia played an instrumental role as a meeting place for the Founding Fathers of the United States, who signed the nation’s Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 and the Constitution on September 17, 1787. Based on the 2010 U.S. Census, the estimated population in Philadelphia is 1,526,006.

S

Philadelphia is home to some of the United States most prestigious healthcare facilities. There are 93 hospitals in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, 5 of which are nationally ranked based on the number of specialties they offer: Thomas Jefferson University Hospital specializing in Cancer, Diabetes, and Endocrinology, Temple University Hospital specializing in Pulmonology, Cancer, Diabetes, and Endocrinology, Hahnemann University Hospital specializing in Cardiology & heart surgery, Pennsylvania hospital specializing in Orthopedics, Diabetes, and Endocrinology, Fox Chase Cancer Center specializing in Cancer and Nephrology, Moss Rehab specializing in rehabilitation, and Willis Eye Hospital specializing in Ophthalmology.

Philadelphia

Aside from all of the factual reasons as to what Philadelphia is and why it’s so wonderful, let’s talk about why we LOVE Philly? 26 year old Rich Privorotsky, a native of Philadelphia, who moved to London, says he misses, “the cheese steaks and the spirit of the sports!” Sports can be considered a form of religion here in Philadelphia. With the Philadelphia Phillies making it into the World Series in 2008, the Eagles three NFL titles and two Super Bowl appearances, and the flyers fighting for the Stanley cup, our teams are top notch. The spirit of sports “phans” is infectious here; Pride in Philadelphia is nothing to hide. Voted as the best city for culture in Travel & Leisure’s November 2011 ‘America’s Favorite Cities’ article; Philadelphia is the monumental home of numerous museums and glorious architecture, closely resembling that which you can only see in Europe. “Philadelphia is the perfect match of inspired diverse cuisine, with a large variety of nightlife and a splash of art for the Broadway type,” said Jeff Vaisberg, 25. Did you know that one of Philadelphia’s most incredible views is at the top of the Art Museum Steps? Showcasing a spectacular angle of the city, this view also shows off “a slice of Paris in Philadelphia.” All the plan of French urban planner Jacques Gréber, who designed the Parkway in 1917 to emulate the Champs-Élysées in Paris, as The Champs-Élysées terminates at the Arc de Triomphe, and the Parkway terminates at the Art Museum The route was determined by an axis drawn from City Hall Tower to a fixed point on the hill that William Penn called “Fairmount,” now the site of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Oh La La! Alexa Allen, 28, a loyal Philadelphian shares, “I love Philadelphia for having streets to run through, great places to eat, and fabulous shops right around the corner!” Also home to some of the most astounding Musical performances, “innovations in classical music, opera, R&B, jazz and soul have earned the music of Philadelphia national and international renown.” Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, home of the internationally renowned Philadelphia Orchestra, is just one of the musical fascinations that Philadelphia has to offer. There is never a dull moment amongst the Avenue of the Arts

in this boastful city; with a plethora of theatres and performance venues to choose from, you’ll never feel far away from Broadway! If you haven’t already noticed, Philadelphia is high and mighty when it comes to Public Art. There are beautiful & unique murals EVERYWHERE; which can be accompanied by a mural tour, should you wish to take it. Mural tours aren’t the only kind available in Philly- if you’re taking out of towners around or just want to learn more, Philly tours are the way to go! We’re talking chocolate tours, waterway tours, food tours, brewery tours, city landmark tours, antique tours; they even have double decker bus tours now! It never gets boring! Philadelphia, though a very approachable city, has landed on the fast track to the A-list lifestyle. With luxury buildings on the rise (pun intended), accompanied by top restaurants & dance clubs, Philadelphia’s nightlife has expanded. Along with popping bottles and jamming to the hottest beats at the clubs, Philadelphia’s night scene shines light on the munchies! The restaurants here are highly recognized for fine dining and many for their outlandish originality. We are also the proud home of brilliant restaurateur Stephen Starr, who started his empire of delicious locations in Philadelphia, before expanding to outside cities. For nature enthusiasts, Philadelphia is a great city to enjoy green acres! With endless parks, especially properties like Fairmount Park, there’s no reason you can’t live a city lifestyle with the option to hike and climb! There are bike lanes almost everywhere, encouraging city dwellers to share the road. Philadelphia is America’s birthplace, and as we watch the city grow day by day, year by year, we’ll never forget the never ending reasons why we love Philadelphia. January 2012•Insight 9

Healthy Living A

re you pregnant during flu season? Do you want to get a flu shot, but worry about how it will affect your unborn baby? The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) say worry no more because the flu shot is safe for your unborn. Not only does the annual recommended flu shot protect the expectant mother against the flu, there are tons of benefits to the unborn baby, including protection against the flu through the first six months of life. Studies have also shown that flu shots reduce the risk of premature birth and low birth weight. Mothers are strongly advised to get vaccinated, as the flu virus proves to be more deadly for pregnant women. A mother’s bodily system works overtime to compensate for the upcoming arrival and complications from the flu, such as preterm births and miscarriages, can occur. As such, pregnant women get the highest priority for flu vaccinations. As always, even with the vaccine, be sure to take additional precautions, such as covering your cough, washing your hands frequently, and stop smoking, if you haven’t already. Here’s to a healthy winter season and healthy babies!

Does the Flu Vaccine HURT or HELP Your Unborn Baby?

Get Your Shake On!

T

here’s no better way to sooth and repair your muscles than with a post-workout protein shake to enhance your bodies strengths with important nutrients. Post workout nutrition has been well researched and there is evidence that taking in simple carbs - usually glucose or dextrose with maltodextrin (plus whey protein) in the form of a post workout drink—is an ideal post workout recovery “meal.” You can make a protein shake appeal to your palate by (and satisfy you as a meal replacement) adding almonds (for fats), spinach (for veggies), honey (who doesn’t like honey?), and fresh fruits, like strawberries, peaches, bananas, and mangoes. Yum in the tum! Shakes are generally designed to replace proteins in damaged muscle tissues, gain stronger bones, increase muscle mass, as well as serve as an energy supplement. If you’ve been sweating profusely, maxing out your muscle strength, or pushing yourself past pain, then get your shake ON!

Must See Doctors for Women by Angele D. Russell

C

ontrary to the popular saying, ignorance is not always bliss, especially when it comes to your health; the more appropriate saying would be “knowledge is power”. In every woman’s world, there are doctor’s we must see as our lives evolve. Here are the top doctors every woman, no matter the age, should visit immediately (or at least once a year): Psychotherapist. The connection between the mind and body is powerful. Many of the physical ailments we complain of may actually be residue from issues going on in our minds. A round of good therapy sessions can help alleviate many problems, ranging from the physical to stress to issues in your life. Nutritionist. Are you having a tough time trying to lose those pesky pounds and want to revamp your diet? A visit to a nutritionist may be the answer. Nutritionists can educate you on portion control, meal plans, and help customize your dietary needs. They will also provide detailed information regarding your metabolism to help you with your weight. One visit can make a world of difference! OB/GYN. This goes without saying; an investment of time and money into yearly visits with your OB/ GYN may save your life (think infections or cancers)… and can help you deal with less serious issues, like heavy menstrual cycles or menopause. Dentist. Dentists aren’t just the source of bad memories and uninsured procedures; a thorough exam and treatment can ensure years of healthy teeth and even a healthy body, as it’s believed gums are the gateway to the rest of the body. Chiropractor. Chiropractors aren’t just for those with injuries; in fact a good chiropractor can relieve anything from stress to back pain and asthma! Just make sure you get a referral to a doctor with lots of experience!

No Needles Necessary!

e’ve all seen it. Someone says their 35 but their face tells a much older story. Those darn wrinkles age a person quicker than gray hair and were almost impossible to get rid of before Botox. But what about those of us who don’t like needles? Oil of Olay can only do so much. No need to fret! A new gel is being developed and, if approved by the FDA, will provide a solution for needle-phobic patients who desire wrinkle treatment without the injection. The topical gel, which has yet to be named, contains the same active ingredient (botulinum toxin type A) as Botox and can be applied with an applicator. The patient then lets the gel sit for 30 minutes, wipes it off, and is done. In studies so far, about 89% of patients saw improvement in wrinkles around the eyes. To date, no other areas have been tested. As with all products seeking approval by the FDA, the process from study to shelves is a long one. In the meantime, doctors suggest looking for topical products containing high amounts of retinol (usually in the first five on the ingredients list of crèmes) or you can try applying topical vitamin C, which studies have shown to boost collagen, too little can cause wrinkles.

Should Smokers and Obese Pay more for Health Insurance?

B

ecause the population is made up of very different individuals both in size and habits, smokers and obese Americans could soon be paying a lot more for their health care. Is this logical? Yes! Reuters reports a growing number of companies are raising health care costs for so-called unhealthy employees. Translation: people who don’t quit smoking, lose weight or lower their cholesterol. In the past few years, many employers have introduced weight loss programs or classes to help people stop smoking; In hopes that employees will voluntarily want to improve their health, which helps bring down soaring insurance costs. Instead of waiting for employees to sign up to improve their health, companies are now going to start making these employees pay more. For example, “Wal-Mart, which insures more than 1 million people, is one such company. It says smokers consume about 25% more health care services than nonsmokers. Starting next year, Wal-Mart will charge employees who smoke higher premiums, along with offering a free program to help them quit.” Most health insurance agencies require pre-insurance health screening where individuals receive blood work run, stress tests, and everything else to determine health conditions, so really those individuals who are harming their well being should be paying more based on their screening results. For those agencies that don’t require screening, they should start, though to some inconvenient, this screening will determine your insurance needs and how much you should be paying.

ome people had a better 2011 than S others. Hopefully 2012 will be kinder to these celebrities Lindsay Lohan—Between being on and off house arrest throughout the entire year, accusations of jewelry theft, community service at a morgue, occasional jail stints, and the horrendous pictures of her incourt make-up, Lohan tops the list of worst year ever. George Lopez—His talk show, “Lopez Tonight,” was not only canceled but was removed from the air the day after the announcement of its cancelation was made. That’s not a great situation, especially after a divorce from his long-term wife. Ashton Kutcher—Despite snagging Charlie Sheen’s spot on “Two and a Half Men,” he has been welcomed with pretty underwhelming reviews. Then after months of marital problems and cheating rumors (ie him cheating on her), the two filed for divorce late last year. Arnold Schwarzenegger—After ending his term as governor, he had a messy split from long time wife, Maria Shriver and had to reveal that he fathered a love child with a former housekeeper. Kim Kardashian—Need we even talk about the 72 days that were Kim Kardashian’s “marriage” to Kris Humphries? When Kim filed for divorce late last year, she got major criticism and backlash.

SHOWS WHERE Nothing Happens

H

omeland premiered in October of 2011 to rave reviews and, months later, it still has rave reviews. Among its most applauded traits is its slow moving, analytic development. In this way, it takes notes from another also fabulously popular show, Mad Men. If you’ve ever watched Mad Men you’ll agree that nothing much happens in the show—it moves along at somewhat of a

snails pace. A faster plot would not allow for this kind of connection. Nor would it allow for the show’s invisible cast member—social commentary. Shows that play out at Mad Men’s pace do so, so that they can allocate air time to reflections on society. In doing so, it gives the audience member a chance to question her own life, society and surroundings. That mutual questioning only invests us further into the characters on the show. It’s a genius cyclical effect that gets us all hooked. Maybe this is a sign that TV audiences are maturing—that they’re no longer wooed by the bang and flash of more shallow-minded shows? Maybe this is a sign of an oncoming trend in television? We’ll see—as Homeland develops, as Mad Men returns for its fifth seasons and as other shows like Boardwalk Empire gather more steam—perhaps this TV is a new frontier?

STICE SYSTEM U CELEBRITY J elebrities don’t go to jail; well, not really anyway. That is because THE

C

there are two justice systems in the United States. There is the one that’s reserved for all us millions of common folk—the one that gets you ten years for borderline misdemeanors; and then, there’s the one that is reserved for the glitterati of Hollywood. That latter doesn’t require the celebrity to even “glitter” all that much to qualify and sets a pretty low bar—I’m looking at you Lindsay Lohan. On the subject of Lindsay, can someone just make her serve some real jail time already?! Probably not, because the celebrity/commoner justice system dichotomy is what has allowed Ms. Lohan to rack up six mug shots and no serious jail time—even though her judges HATE her! And even when celebs are finally jailed, they end up serving about half their already diluted sentences before they’re released for some fluffly reason like “overcrowding.” John Doe who beat up that cop while high doesn’t get out for overcrowding, but Khloe Kardashian does. But celebs are still getting some kind of punishment and being sent to jail for at least a little while, right? Wrong. Ever hear of something called “self-pay jails?” No? That’s because you’re not rich and famous. These facilities operate under the slogan that “bad things happen to good people” and allow the affluent in places like Southern California to rent out upscale cells in which to serve their jail time. This jail cell upgrade includes amenities like iPods, cell phones, computers, private cells; they include work release programs and even let “prisoners” bring their own food. This costs anywhere between $45—$175 a month. In this economy, that sounds more like a vacation than a jail sentence. These pay-to-stay jails, early releases, lenient sentencing of celebrity offenders is kind of a perversion of the “equal under the law” justice system that our founding fathers would probably not take too kindly to. Then again, George Washington didn’t get in very much trouble for chopping down that cherry tree, so maybe I’m wrong.

CHEATING Is Not Just a Boys’ Club

T

iger Woods. Jesse James. Ashton Kutcher. Three wildly different men; one common conclusion applies to all three: they cheat. If that spelled out reality doesn’t make most every woman roll her eyes and say “duh” then nothing will. Romantic comedies show us that men can be total jerks! Well, ladies, don’t get too self righteous. Science says women are cad too! Women cheat just about as much as men do—men beat women on the cheating curve by only 3–4%. You’ll get the defensive women who say “but, it’s different” and give you some version of the world where men are blind horndogs 100% of the time; and that women cheat “with reason” or based on some reasonable, justifiable rationale. Sorry ladies, no justification here. Granted, women unsatisfied emotionally were 2.6 times more likely to cheat on their partners. However, that is not the only cause. Women who said they didn’t feel sexually compatible with their partners were 3 times more likely to cheat! This means that sex is a much bigger factor than women let on.

cupuncture is a healing technique that people are constantly curious over. Though, very few people know where to find quality service. Those interested, absolutely must see the masterful Sharon Sherman, owner of Empirical Point acupuncture, our top pick for Philadelphia’s Best in Acupuncture! Sherman has been working as an acupuncturist for 11 years and takes pride in her extensive knowledge of pain management and Oriental Medicine. Sherman offers services in two convenient locations, Center City and Chestnut Hill; two offices with one goal in mind: to heal. Insight experience: Feeling taken care of is an understatement after a visit at Empirical Point, as Sherman is gracious and calming—not only caring for my pain points in acupuncture, but for my well-being in general. Her comprehensive approach to learning about new clients includes an in depth questionnaire which helps provide important details into how Sherman will heal each client. I thoroughly enjoyed our in-depth consultation, allowing me to express my points of discomfort. Sharon wanted to help loosen my stress knots and relieve knee pain I had been having, in just one session. Being a baby when it comes to needles was a fear quickly overcome when Sharon tried one on my hand just as an example, letting me know what I was in for. During the session, Sharon popped in a few times just to make sure I was feeling ok; I was floating in relaxation land. After painless needle insertion, the calm of meditative music softly playing, I feel into a comfortable ease and drifted off while the magic of healing happened. I left feeling lighter and overall in a state of rejuvenation. Ultimately, Empirical Point offers excellent results in just one hour-long session in peaceful surroundings. It doesn’t hurt that, after visiting Sharon’s Chestnut Hill location, I learned that Empirical Point is one of the cleanest, more comforting acupuncture locations in Philadelphia.

arbuzzo is a play on the Tuscan word Reviewed by: Luba Patlakh for “full belly” and it is the most accurately named restaurant ever! Famed, taste bud twisting chefs Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran have done it again! Best described as a place for “savory, urban dining,” Barbuzzo offers diners, creatively crafted and Mediterraneaninspired dishes based on the flavors of Italy, Portugal, Spain, and France. The restaurant itself is a welcoming space, not large—but encompasses a bar, wall decor built of shelve cubbies with glass jars full of colorful herbs and dried veggies, and offers outdoor seating in a comfortable 13th street setting. Tables for two are perfect for an intimate conversation and candle lit for a romantic ambiance. Barbuzzo’s drink menu is intriguing; offering a variety of delicious and buzz boasting drinks. I tried the Cucumber Margarita, [cucumber, tequila, and house margarita juice blend] the juice was tangy and came equipped with a raw cucumber slice on the glass; classy looking drink with big taste; their Little Italian Redhead sounds delicious as well [vodka, aperol, housemade lemonade]. Staying light and fresh, I tried the Vegetable board as an appetizer, which offered a selection of farmer’s market veggies [this dish changes on the regular as each day different famer’s market veggies are chosen]. The dish was a mixture of delicious fingerling potatoes and garlic, roasted eggplant topped with caramelized onions and parmesan cheese over a spicy tomato paste, garlic-asparagus-parmesan bruschetta, and crispy snap peas served with crushed almonds on top. YUM! The restaurant offers many beer/wine dinner pairing events familiarizing crowds with the food and spirits. It’s a great place to catch up with friends or simply try something new. Drunken

Gummy Bears

Y

ou don’t need to be so serious about your alcohol, ladies and gentlemen. Relax and have sun fun with these vodka-infused Gummi Bears! Ingredients: 1.5 cups of vodka (give or take, depending on preference). 1 tub of Gummi bear candies, plastic with lid (about 1kg; can be bought at Wal Mart). 1 can of frozen juice concentrate (any flavor you desire). As many glass containers as you require. Plastic wrap Directions: Fill the glass containers about half way with the gummies. Then pour in vodka until it reaches the top of the pile of gummies. If you don’t want it to be as strong, use less vodka (the amount of time you let the bears soak has no impact on how alcoholic they are. They will suck up nearly every drop of vodka you put in, so the trick is to use the right amount for your taste). Cover the dishes with plastic wrap—rumor has it plastic does bad things to vodka, so be sure there’s no plastic actually touching the vodka. Put the dishes in the fridge and let the bears soak for a total of five days (after about three days, they will have absorbed all the vodka that they can, but you should still let them marinate for another two). You’ll notice that the gummies will get slightly larger as they absorb the vodka. It is okay if, at the end of five days, there is some liquid left at the bottom of the container. After five days, take them out, invite your friends over and enjoy!

Sports & Athletics

Curling And Its Name as Sport C

urling began as a demo Olympic event in the 1988 Olympics. It’s originally a popular Canadian sport which involves the use of brooms, ice, and round flat stones. If you’re still not familiar, think off shuffle board. The original notion was that curlers had to comply with the rest of Olympic athletes to stay in shape. Two teams, each of four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also known as, “rocks,” across the ice curling sheet towards the house, a circular target marked on the ice. During that process two members are trying to create grooves in the ice with brushes. If you are like me then you would have to ask yourself: How does curling qualify as a sport? Let alone an Olympic sport? Reports from viewers of the 2002 Olympic games in Salt Lake city state that competing curlers actually get smoke breaks during the match. Between rounds the countries that are not playing, gather in a circle, and light up. This is quite disturbing to hear when discussing a “sport” viewed on an international stage. Something that one would call a sport requires an athlete to be at the pinnacle of their physical performance. So, how can we call curling a sport? Any activity where smoking is promoted by the “athletes” cannot and should not be called a sport. After matches, competitors file off the ice and have a cigarette break. You can check this “sport” out in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

he bad news is . . . this season appears over for for our beloved Eagles. the The good news, there is still going to be a Super Bowl. Even if you hate the competing teams you may find yourself watching for the always awaited Super Bowl commercials. Before I get to that, lets talk about the teams that have the highest potential of winning NFC (National Football Conference) and AFC (American Football Conference) titles this year. We can start with the undefeated Packers in the NFC. They hold a previous win in Super Bowl 2010, most likely a #1 seed; we look at them for another Super Bowl appearance. On the AFC side is a mix of The Patriots, Steelers, and Texans. Now back to the commercials, Last year’s Volkswagen “Darth Vader kid” was the most viewed commercial. The Bridgestone beaver came close in second. With the bid for a 30 second spot listed at 3.5million, this year’s commercials better top the ones from last year. The rumor mill says that Pepsi-Co has purchased 3 spots and will run two, 30 second spots and one 60 second spot. Other big advertisers include Hyundai, GM, Coca-Cola, Anheuser-Busch, and more. What to know when opening a bank account Financial Tips

O

pening a bank account is like second nature to most individuals. As we grow, a sign of maturity and growth involves a job, which in turn involves the need to store your money in a safe place; here comes the time to open a bank account. Before you decide to open an account, there are some important things you should know. Firstly, when it comes to choosing a bank, you will want a convenient location near your home or a bank that offers a large quantity of branches near your home and work, this way no matter where you are, you can always visit your bank for your needs. It is important to check out your banks rates, and accommodations, and prior to joining any bank ask yourself, what can this bank offer me? “By opening a bank account, you ensure that your money will be kept safe from theft, damage or loss and as long as the bank is insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Company (FDIC), your accounts will be insured for up to $100,000. If your credit union is insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), your accounts will also be insured for up to $100,000.” Most of us, who are not privy to banking, are so used to cashing our checks and keeping cash in our possession. Over the long term, a bank account can be less costly than using a check casher or other non-bank service, not only that but in general your money is safer at the bank versus being stored in your home. Sure your thinking, it’s safest under my watch, but what you don’t realize is that when money is stored in the home, it can easily be misplaced and it never grows. While banking houses your funds safely in your personal account, with options to enter a bank account with interests that may help you earn some additional money (Just for storing it there)! Housing your money in the bank can be beneficial to you! You can start to build a relationship with a bank and a financial history that will help you in the future. Creating a good relationship with your bank and its attendants is priceless, by doing this, you are opening your own doorway to financial fulfillment, should you ever need to call in a favor or have your funds cleared. Aside from helping you gain a couple of extra dollars and providing a safe place for your money. A bank account can help you save money. This follows the out of sight out of mind theory. If your money is not sitting in a safe in front of your nose at home, you are less likely to continue going in there to dispense of all of your loose cash. If your money is in your bank account- you can quickly know how much is there through the monitoring systems offered, as well as, being able to keep better track of your spending. Should you just keep cash around, you tend to lose sight of how much you spend because after all . . . money is simply paper that literally can be blown away by the wind, and when not tracked properly is!

Understanding Your Retirement’s Financial Standing

R

etirement is the time in your life when you are ready to do all of the things you may never have had the chance, knowing you had far more important things to do with your hard earned funds. Today, with the uncertainties of our lives, most people are not just looking to have a bit to retire with, but rather enough to pay their bills well into their golden years, while being able to live comfortably, enjoying the after work era. Desperate times call for desperate measures. With the collapse of our economy it is no surprise that people have gone as far as selling their own burial plots in order to survive, but maybe that is not the answer. When it comes to planning for retirement and saving for retirement, it is necessary to add a simple word to your vocabulary—enough. USA Today reports, deciding on a nonexistent magic number as enough for retirement is not possible. “Unfortunately, the answer isn’t that simple. Some like to say $1 million is enough to retire on. But while that might be more than enough for most people, it may be far too little for many others.” There is a wide range of factors that go into retirement planning, which is the big reason why it’s so difficult to find a one-size fits all number. That’s where online retirement calculators come in. “Most brokerages provide online tools that help you figure out how much you’ll need to retire given your details. But even these calculators rarely agree, as they use different methods to come up with findings.” The best thing to do is to use several different retirement calculators and compile the results. Run your numbers through several calculators and try to get a good rough idea based on all the results you get. “If you’re counting on Social Security to finance your retirement, think again. Many elderly Americans with Social Security as their sole means of support are living in poverty. Social Security should not be considered your primary source of retirement income.” (Financialplan.com) To define your own version of “enough” for retirement it is important to start by calculating your financial needs and go from there. That starting point will help you and your loved ones find a well deserved “happy place” financially, to support you in your retired life. It is also highly recommended that you visit a financial expert in terms of better understanding your needs for retirement. 18 Insight•January 2012

for Buying a Car

I

f a person is looking to finance a car, their credit score plays a big role in the interest rate he or she will end up paying. For example, if someone comes in with a credit score of 760 or higher, they can expect to be around 4.1 percent, whereas someone with a score between 700 and 759, can be looking at approximately 4.3 or higher. Unfortunately, the lower the credit score, the higher the interest rate. Many people are faced with the difficult decision of whether they should finance their car or lease it. Their decision truly depends on their financial situation. It is considerably more expensive to finance a car, but each option offers its pros and cons. With both options, you don’t own the car, the bank does. Some pros to financing are: ownership of the car within five years, so you will never have to make a payment once it is paid off, this option also allows you to drive with any insurance limits you want. The cons to financing are that the bumper-to-bumper warranty usually expires long before you pay off the car, which typically leads you to negative equity on the car. Pros to leasing include, lower upfront costs, usually a lower monthly payment, and you are given a bumperto-bumper warranty for the extent of your lease. The cons are that you must carry $100/300 liability insurance when you lease a vehicle and you’re limited to the number of miles per year you can drive. Before buying or leasing a car, I recommend checking online to see how much other people in your area have paid to lease or finance a similar car to the one you want. A good website to visit would be www.edmunds.com/forums. I also suggest contacting a local dealer and asking them if there are any promotions on rebates for the car you have in mind. This information was provided via interview with local dealer: Sergey Kotovskiy, (215) 439-9339 O’Neill Nissan, 849 West Street Road, Warminster, PA 18974.

Technology Today Is Your Personal Information

Really Private? W

e never stop to think how much of our personal information is really in the hands of others and what they can do with it, here’s some food for thought: what does your cell phone provider know about you? In October, Verizon Wireless changed their privacy policy to allow the company to obtain private customer information. The company can record their customers’ location data, web browsing history, as well as other personal information such as age and gender. Because companies now maintain rights to private customer information, some cell phone companies have begun selling your data and information to their highest bidders. Unfortunately, these companies are so protected, when they sell your data, they sell it on an anonymous basis, and you may never know! Verizon was the first mobile provider to publicly admit to selling customers information to other businesses, but it is not the only company using the data for more cash. Sprint, similar to Verizon, track the type of website their customers visit on the mobile device, as well as, the apps that are being downloaded and statistic data of how frequently they are used. They use this data to help the third-party target ads to their consumers, though Verizon relies on much more personal information than Sprint like home addresses and customers’ demographic details. Selling private information to thirdparty users has been an age-old practice that is not only exclusive to the wireless industry. The information has been shared with third-parties for more than a decade. Verizon has been applauded by the privacy groups for being the first company to admit to doing this. If customers do not wish to participate in this they can opt-out through an online form, though this still leaves room for privacy advocates to raise concern about the direction wireless companies are headed in. Parents support their kids lying about age on

E

ach social-networking site has an age restriction, for Facebook no one under the age of 13 years old can join. If that is the case, how are these young kids making Facebook pages? As surprising as it may sound, their parents are helping them sign up! Ninety five percent of parents of 10-year-olds on Facebook were aware that their child had signed up for the site, and 78% of those parents helped create the account for the child. The percentage of parental knowledge for 11- and 12-year-olds was just a little lower. When parents were surveyed 89% of parents believe there should be a minimum age restriction for Facebook, but 78% of parents believe there are circumstances that make it OK for a child to sign up even if they do not meet the age requirement. When the parents were asked what circumstances they were referring to, parents often said school-related activities and communicating with other family members. The question as to what age should is appropriate for kids to join sites such as Facebook has been in debate by parental groups and privacy advocates for years. The CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes that children under the age of 13 should be allowed to use the services because interacting with others online these days is important. A study that was reported last year by Consumer Reports done last spring found that 7.5 million children under the age of 13 are members of the social-networking site.

Flexible Cell Phone Display Screens

I

t is difficult not to recognize the increasing amount of new inventions and ideas appearing daily; specifically updates in cell phone technology. Software like voice recognition and touch screen control are quickly replacing high-tech web browsing and typing for ultra popular texting capabilities. Software such as voice recognition and touch screen control are quickly replacing the already super tech web browsing and typing for ever so popular texting. So what can we expect out of cell phones in 2012? Rumor has it that the next big thing is a flexible screen. Nokia demonstrated a handheld device that allows you to bend and twist the screen to do things like scrolling down and zooming in and out. Besides Nokia, Samsung stated that they expect to debut phones with flexible display screens in 2012, after words a flexible tablet would follow. There are several advantages of a flexible display screen; durability is number one— with constant testing, the industry is paving a new way to utilize phone commands, through methods such as bending the display to zoom. Imagine a phone-sized device that could unfurl to be the size of a tablet. That is the next big thing that companies are working on. As to when in 2012 we will see this change it is still unclear. With companies buzzing and ideas on the loose, we hope to see the proposed idea available in the beginning of 2012.

A Dose of Insight By Angele D. Russell

I met someone in my 40s and learned that he’s the love of my life. It was heaven for a few months, unfortunately he said he had to stop seeing me because his mom is dying from cancer and needed all of his attention. My friends are telling me that it is not his mom, but he is probably married. Should I find out the truth? ✽As someone who has cared for a dying mother, I can undoubtedly tell you that any type of support system is usually welcomed and not pushed away. While I do understand people handle things in different ways, it does seem suspicious that

the “love of your life” doesn’t want your support during a difficult time such as this. My advice is to trust your instinct and know that people make time for things important to them; you do the math. Good luck!

I won money at the casino, but I am afraid to tell my wife. First, I swore on the life of my children I would never play again. I have gambling problems that almost cost me my family. Second, I cannot hide money because of the legal procedure that you have to go through to get the money, she would find out anyway. How can I inform my wife of the win, or should I just forget it to save my family? ✽Anything, and I mean ANYTHING, hidden in the dark comes to light. Holding this secret in will not only be detrimental to your sanity, it will be wreak havoc on your family if found out through someone other than you.

My advice is to be honest now, address the gambling problem, and get treatment so you can move on with your life. Besides, I am certain you would rather live an honest life now than to suffer in silence. Good luck!

My father died and left me and my three sisters with the “will,” but during the time of waiting for my fathers “will” to be announced I learned that I have two more half-brothers from other woman he has never been married to. What are the chances they need to be included in the share of the “will”? ✽This is obviously a legal question and the answer is that it depends on where you live. In Pennsylvania, if a child is left out of a will, a court will presume your father meant to include those children. If a will states that 20 Insight•January 2012

those children should not receive any part of the share, a probate court must abide by your father’s wishes. In short, unless the will says they don’t get any money, the court will include them in the share of the will. Good luck!

Men & Signs They’re Into You The Simple Creatures:

L

et’s face it. Men are not the most complicated creatures on the planet. They like sports, beer, feeling like “the man,” and their mommas. So, why do we, as women, make excuses for them that suggest otherwise? For example, the reason he didn’t call back isn’t because he was hurt in the past and needing to contemplate his new life with you. He didn’t call because . . . he didn’t want to. To settle it once and for all, here are five undeniable signs the guy you’re eyeing is into you: He Makes You A Priority (not an “option”) There are many ways a man can show that you’re a priority and they mostly have to do with time. He makes and keeps dates or gatherings, he actively seeks to make time to be with you, he compromises, and he seeks to have spend time with you outside of YOUR home (always hanging out at your place can be a sign he’s hiding something at his). He’s Curious About Your Thoughts and Dreams This relates to his thoughts about you and your future together. By finding out your thoughts on major issues (family, health, finances), he is trying to figure out if you would be a good fit for him. If he’s not asking, he may not be thinking of you in that way. He Initiates the DTR (Define The Relationship) Talk If he is ready to pronounce to the world that you are off the market, that’s definitely a major sign he’s into you. Many times, women initiate this awkward conversation and it sometimes doesn’t end so well, leaving that dreaded grey area. One rule of thumb: a man will not commit a SECOND before he is ready too so if he’s not ready, don’t try and force a fit! He’s Emotionally Mature He encourages you to be better; he has a relationship with his family; he’s able to recognize his shortcomings or areas for growth; he’s not quick to anger. These are just a few signs he’s emotionally mature and equipped to handle a long lasting relationship. You’ve Met His Family/Friends (or they have at least heard about you) Please understand this: until you have met family or friends, you are non-existent and he’s unsure about you. By introducing you to them, he’s making a declaration of sorts, letting his friends/family know he’s decided you are Ms. Right . . . or at least Ms. Right Now!

Need A Promotion?

Start Kissing Up

B

ack in the day, kissing up had a bad name; everyone had a special place in hell for those over-complimentary coworkers and gunners in corporate meetings. But today, being a kiss up may actually pay off in the long run. No longer is it about just trying to stand out, but about actually forming relationships with co-workers, particularly superiors, without appearing disingenuous. One way to “kiss up” is to give subtle situational compliments. For instance, if your boss writes an article or does something of value, compliment him on the article the next time you see him. Just don’t overdo it; one compliment is enough. Another technique is to share common interests and values with your boss. Again, this is situational; no one wants an abrupt declaration of common interests at 8 in the morning. But, if you overhear your boss talking about a park he goes to, a food he likes, a church he attends, etc, then use this time to chime in with your similar interests or suggestions. Using these techniques work like a charm, as they can be the foundation for forming a meaningful relationship, which may eventually translate into a promotion (hopefully sooner than later)! In the meantime, work hard, take initiative, and become an expert of your craft. Besides, there’s no use in getting a promotion and not really deserving it!
