EDITOR’S DESK

I

commute. Everyday, twice a day, I spend forty minutes traveling in and out of Philadelphia to go to work. Generally, the people I’m surrounded by on those train rides are doing one of only a few things: they are either (1) sleeping, (2) half asleep and listening to music, (3) watching something on their computers or (4) maybe, just maybe, skimming through the paper to read its headlines and look at its pictures. So, everyday, somewhere in the middle of each commute, I end up re-thinking the same thought: we all just seem so detached. That is why we decided Insight needed to be written—to strike up a conversation! Our sincerest goal is that, within the pages of this magazine, we can create a public forum. I envision it to be kind of like a small town coffeehouse, where everyone stops by and takes a little bit out of their day to see what’s new, what’s news, and what’s up? It’s the conversations that we have with each other, put down in written word. The ‘Can you believe the weather?’; ‘Did you catch the game?’; ‘ Did you hear about that thing that

doctors are saying?’; ‘I wonder what there is going on this weekend?’ But, lets make one thing perfectly crystal clear— this is most certainly NOT a magazine that we are writing for you. It is a magazine that you are writing for you. Call us the middleman, if you will. Our goal may be to strike up a conversation, but it is you that we want to hear speak. That is why scattered throughout the magazine you’ll find information about contacting us, websites, polls, Facebook status’, reader opinions, etc. Write in! Tell us what you want to talk about in YOUR conversation. And we don’t want this to be a one-way friendship. We want to reach back out to those people that reach out to us. Please look to the next page for how to win prizes and get rewards for, well, for talking to us! It is time we all became more aware—of our community, of what is happening around us and of each other. So. . . . turn the page and lets talk! Yours very truly, Maria

The End of the World?

W

ell, May 21st came and went without any signs of The Rapture. Still, people seem to be on edge because, until we all wake up on December 22, 2012, we will not have shed ourselves of all the current hyped up doomsday theories out there. Until that date many non-skeptics worry that this trend of catastrophes and disasters we’ve seen this year are sort of the ‘beginning of the end.’ It is an intriguing argument. One can’t help but get dismayed when looking at everything that’s happened in just this year alone: the string of tornados that hit the U.S., the earthquake, flooding and nuclear leaks in Japan, the landslides and flash floods in Brazil, both of the earthquakes in New Zealand, the economic crisis that the U.S. is in right now and we’re not even going to mention Greece! Paranoia could easily give credence to this list of horrible occurrences. But, then we remember the little rationalist and skeptic within us that reminds us: look at all of history—famines, landslides, earthquakes, disasters left and right—and remember that we are not that unique in our occurrences. So, maybe these horrific events do not signal the end of the world? Maybe they’re signs that our world is on par with the rest of history. I guess we will have to wait until December 22, 2012 to know for sure.

The Forever 27 Club

L

ast month, the world lost a vocal great when Amy Winehouse passed away at 27 years old. Since then, I’m sure you’ve heard the chatter that Ms. Winehouse has sadly been inducted into the Forever 27 Club. This “club,” for lack of a better word is the unfortunate fraternity of world-class musicians and artists that have not lived beyond the age of 27. The club has become somewhat of a pop culture icon. It’s very first member is alleged to be blues master, Robert Johnson, who was killed in 1938 when he drank a poisoned bottle of wine given to him by an angry spouse. He was 27 years old. The Forever 27 Club has since seemed largely interested in musicians of a high caliber. Between 1938 and 2011, 21 musicians have died at the age of 27 (roughly, one musician every three and a half years). Forever 27 Club members include Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Brian Jones. Most of these tortured artists, no pun intended, have died from drug use or suicide. Yes, it is likely a coincidence. But, it still seems like a curse befallen on some of our most talented. What are your thoughts? Email or Facebook us today!

Four-Day School Weeks?

With the school year now beginning, it seems that more and more school districts are toying with the idea of a four-day school week. In Pennsylvania, no district has decided to do so yet but an increasing number of school districts are considering it. This move is largely fiscally motivated, as many school districts find it more and more difficult to maintain enough funds for a standard week. It seems either programs or days of the week have to get cut for districts to save money amid funding cuts. In western Pennsylvania, the Apollo-Ridge and Keystone Oaks school districts have joined those districts publicly considering a four-day week. These decisions are obviously being made reluctantly. Apollo Ridge Superintendent, Margaret DeNinno, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that they are considering alternatives as well. Namely, giving the students extra homework or projects to be completed on the day off from school. Those against the idea argue there are better ways to be more fiscally responsible than depriving our children of a complete education.

John of God F

or the past 30 years millions of people have ventured out to a small village in Brazil to seek out a man named João de Deus, also referred to as, “John of God.” He has been compared to Jesus, and described as the most powerful spiritual healer of our time. Many swear that he saved their lives whether it be mentally or physically, while others brush it off as bogus. Having absolutely zero medical training, João claims that at 16, the soul of King Solomon entered his body, and performed a miraculous healing. Thereafter, he claims to have invoked over 30 historically famous doctors to perform the healings for him, including Dom Inacio de Loyola, a 15th century Spanish nobleman; Dr. Oswaldo Cruz, who helped to eradicate yellow fever; and the late surgeon, Dr. Augusto de Almeida. Since then, he has been offering healings to people all over the world, usually free of charge. His patients report that within seconds of preparing to operate, João’s body trembles as he becomes inhabited by the soul of a master surgeon. Not only does he take on their skills, his eyes morph color and his personality shifts. He has healed people of brain tumors, treated diseases, restored vision in the blind, and made patients able to walk after being told by their doctor that they will never have feeling in their legs again. After their healing session, patients are given post-op instructions, as if they were leaving a hospital. These instructions include: no sex, no alcohol, no smoking, taking medications, bed rest, etc. John of God will be in Rhineback, New York, September 26-28 2011. There are three available days to receive healing from John of God, where each day is priced at approximately $160. See more details on how to apply http://www.eomega.org.

Healthy Living Bionic Legs!

1,500 years ago the wheelchair was invented. Soon, we may be able to make it obsolete. Scientists are working on the creation of bionic legs. Hayden Allen was told he would never be able to walk again after injuring his spinal cord in a motorbike accident. False, said New Zealand Biotech Company that created Rex, the Robotic Exoskeleton. Rex is essentially a pair of robotic legs that would help someone who would otherwise be wheelchair-bound. It gives them the ability and range of motion of someone who is able to walk naturally on both legs. Rex is lightweight and made for each individual user. Dr. Richard Roxburgh, Auckland neurologist and medical advisor to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, said to the Daily Mail ‘For many of my patients, Rex represents the first time they’ve been able to stand up and walk for years.’

Doctor’s Orders

N

o doctor will tell a patient to “go on a diet.” Instead, doctors tell their patients to “eat healthier,” “be more active” and “lead a more health conscious life.” The goal: balance. How is this achieved?  Firstly, don’t just buy your food, really pick your food. Be selective. Try to eat more plant foods while cutting back on refined carbs and sugary drinks. Read labels to ensure that you’re moderating your carbohydrates and meeting your daily

quota of fiber. Similarly, stay away from saturated and trans-fat, and fill up on unsaturated fats, such as nuts, olive oil, and avocados. What this means in your daily life is: have some water instead of a sugary soda; have some fruit instead of candy; consider a yummy treat, a treat, and not part of a daily routine.  Secondly, be considerate of how you eat. Always eat breakfast because it will make you feel fuller throughout the day, give you more energy, and steady blood

sugar levels. Have three main meals throughout the day and two healthy snacks in between. Eat roughly the same amount of calories each day, and stop eating when you feel 80% full—it takes about twenty minutes for you to feel full and, by giving yourself a break, you will realize that you’ve had more than enough. There is no gimmick to good health. As any doctor will tell you, all “healthy living” requires, is healthy living!

Sitting for too long Increases your Chances for Type 2 Diabetes

It is no secret that we’ve become a more sedentary society. Desk jobs, movie theaters, cars, technology, advancement and leisure make things more convenient but it all brings us to a standstill—or, rather, a sitstill. It doesn’t take a scientist to tell you that this kind of stagnant state is not good for your health. But, scientists tell us this nonetheless. Recently, researchers from the University of Missouri found that when people change and go from generally active to inactive, they increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes. These researchers qualify “inactive” as taking less than 5,000 steps a day and “active” as taking more than 10,000 steps a day. So, what is the best way to remedy this problem? Hours upon hours in the gym? No, say the researchers. Instead, small bursts of movement throughout the day add up to benefit us. A healthier you is as simple as a walk in the park at lunch, taking the stairs instead of the escalator, and other such activities that would get you taking somewhere between 500 and 1,000 steps every few hours. 6 Insight September 2011

Getting Ready for Flu Season

F

ever, chills, stomachache, sore throat, stuffy nose, headache, muscle aches and fatigue. As students get ready to go back to school, flu season is ready to circulate. Be forewarned, the Federal Center for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that the flu is striking early this year. Last year’s swine flu infected millions of people and commotion broke out due to vaccine shortages. As a preventive measure, available vaccinations have been increased from 114 million to 165 million doses this year. The most recent vaccine available is said to protect against 3 strains of the flu

virus, and has already arrived at clinics. Doctors recommend that anyone 6 months or older, including senior citizens, women who are pregnant, and anyone with medical conditions that play an impact on the immune system, get their vaccinations. It takes approximately 2 weeks for the vaccination to kick in, so the earlier the better, and reduces risk of the flu by an impressive 70-90%. Aside from getting vaccinated remember to keep your hands clean, cough into your arm instead of your hands, exercise and take you daily vitamins.

Hottest Weight Loss Trend

I

t has been called, by some, a “miracle in your cabinet.” By others, it is humbly known as the most effective weight loss supplement in twenty years. Its rave reviewers have lost 10, 15, even 20 pounds from its use alone. “It” is the seed of an African Mango, from the Irvingia Gabonensis tree native to West Africa. This seed is then exported out to the world. However, en route to us interested folk, it is filtered through dozens of pharmaceutical companies who then advertise and distribute the seed in a medical formula form, each raving that theirs is the best on the market. In formula form, most of these supplements are largely packed with filler and very little actual seed, if any at all. But, many believe that the African Mango’s seeds, in their natural form, are very high in fiber, lower cholesterol levels, improve control of diabetes, convert carbohydrates into energy and increase energy levels which thereby reduce fat cell growth, in-

crease breakdown of fats and reduce the appetite by increasing the amount of Leptin (chemical whose deficiency signals to the brain that one is hungry) in the bloodstream. Clearly, these are some busy seeds. This new supplement has been featured on the news, in Lance Armstrong’s magazine, and even on the Dr. Oz show. Moreover, medical studies have shown that those subjects taking the supplement lost an average of 26 pounds over Health Statistics Edition: 10 weeks and showed significant loss of body weight, body fat, 919, 328, 154 Undernourished people in this world waist size, and reduced appetite. Now, obviously eating in mod1,547,575,594 eration and working out reguOverweight people in this world larly is an irreplaceable method 33,674,737 of health. But, maybe, just mayHIV/AIDS infected people be there is something to these 4,624,954 mango seeds? Deaths caused by cancer this year

Ryan Gosling stars as a stunt driver by day, criminal getaway driver by night that falls for his sweet, yet troubled, next-door neighbor, played by Carey Mulligan, that he has to save from a syndicate of deadly criminals. Girls, two words: “Ryan Gosling!” Boys, two words: “criminal getaway.”

3

9/16—Straw Dogs Starring Alexander Skarsgard and Kate Bosworth. Recently broken up, Skarsgard and Bosworth co-star in this eerie thriller in which Amy Sumner (Bosworth) and her husband David (played by James Marsden) move from Hollywood back to Sumner’s Southern hometown, leading to a, let’s just say, “violent” confrontation with the locals. P.S. even one glance at the trailer will reveal: James Marsden is creepily good at being creepy!

ho doesn’t know that a good journalist has to hunt for stories? But, how far is too far? This summer, news of London’s phone hacking scandal jumped across the pond to the U.S. In the U.K., it’s been controversial for a while: On July 10, News of the World, a British Tabloid and a subsidiary of News Corporation, ended after 168 years of publication due to public outcry about newspaper employees engaged in phone hacking, police bribery and using an improper influence to get their stories. This wasn’t an international scandal when this improper behavior was limited to celebrities, politicians and British Royals. But, in July, when it was found out that the phones of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler, relatives of deceased British soldiers, and bombing victims were also hacked, the international public went on the offense. This, as we all know, led to dismissals, apologies, arrests, resigning, etc. Even Rupert Murdoch, owner of News Corporation, got a piece of pie smacked in his face at an investigative hearing! Now, London officials are looking into Piers Morgan, the host of CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight, for impropriety under his former editorship of London’s Daily Mirror! Not only is it clear that this scandal is spreading, but it’s definitely going to get worse before it gets better!

Can Sports Improve Behavior in Children?

R

Philadelphia Eagles Football Schedule

esearchers at Tel Aviv University have found evidence that sports are beneficial to a child’s behavioral, cognitive, and emotional well-being. Tests of 649 children show that a continuous program of sports helped boost self-control and discipline, and reduced aggression in children. While verbal therapy does help children to control their behavior, research indicates that it does not reduce negative emotions. Participation in sport, however, is able to reduce aggressive behavior by suppressing negative emotions. The children researched participated in a variety of sports for five hours a week, three times a week, students ranging from grades

3-6 played group sports such as basketball or soccer. Twice a week, they participated in martial arts, including judo and karate. After 24 weeks, researchers compared questionnaires and evaluations from the beginning of the program with those administered at the end. Results showed improvement in participants’ selfcontrol, self-observation, problem-solving skills, and delayed gratification—which ultimately led to a decrease in the incidence of aggression. The key is to introduce children to something that they love to do and in which they have a compelling interest. This will give them a sense of purpose, decreasing the likelihood that they will act out.

The Five Strongest Arms in Phillies History

As ranked by Joe Iannello via Bleacherreport.com

ho has had the strongest arms W in Philadelphia Phillies history? That could mean many things.

Bleacherreport.com’s Joe Jannello says “it could be a work-horse type pitcher who throws a plethora of complete games, a pitcher who can hit 100 mph on the radar gun, an infielder who is a web-gem waiting to happen, a catcher who can throw out base-runners, or even an outfielder with a rocket for an arm.” So, who, out of the Phillies 127 seasons makes the top five of the list? Shane Victorino Victorino has been with the current Phillies team since 2005. He “has won the last three Gold Glove’s from center-field and has 36 outfield-assists since 2007.” Ed Delanhanty “All the way back in 1893 Delanhanty compiled a ridiculous 31 outfield assists while playing both center and left field.” These assists still rank as legendary today. Billy Wagner Wagner was with the “Phillies from 2004-2005 where he posted 21 and 38 saves respectively.” His intimidating arm would pitch balls often reaching 100 mph. Mike Schmidt “Schmidt is second all-time in Gold Gloves by a third-baseman with 10. He is also the greatest Philadelphia Phillie ever…Schimidt’s 404 put-outs in 1974 is still sixth alltime for MLB third-basemen.” Chuck Klein Klein played fifteen seasons with the Phillies and “ranks sixth all-time in put-outs among RF with 2,638, and sixth in career assists (from RF) with 171. In 1930, Klein had the third most assists ever by a right fielder with 44.”
