PET OF THE WEEK

Tex

You’re probably thinking, “Who is that fabulous feline?” You would be right to notice me. How could you not? I AM fabulous! Just check out this round belly. I like to lounge in a full stretch so my belly really shows. Of course, I often lounge in my private cubby because, well, I think that it’s great to be admired, but a girl needs her privacy, too! I like to play, especially with strings and such. Let’s make sure I have some servants … er, family members … who will cater to my playtime whims. I also like head pets, on my own terms, of course. Did I mention I’m a bit of a diva? Well you would be, too, if you were as fabulous as me! You really don’t want to miss your chance to have this purrfect roly-poly girl in your life. I will always keep you on your toes!

Reference Number: A24168847 Name: Tex

Included in the adoption fee: - Spay/Neuter surgery - Microchipping - First set of vaccines - Complimentary post-adoption vet exam - And so much more!

Working Wise Dear Working Wise: A co-worker is picking on me for no reason—telling lies about me to other people and saying that I’m not good at my job. I love my job, but I hate going to work now and I’m thinking of quitting. I don’t know what to do, should I tell the boss? Signed Bullied Dear Bullied:

Do you have a work-related question? Send your questions to Working Wise, at charles.strachey@gov.ab.ca. Charles Strachey is a manager with Alberta Human Services. This column is provided for general information.

Many adults think that bullying is a problem that only occurs in the schoolyard, but unfortunately there are workplace bullies as well. Workplace bullying is a serious problem that affects everyone in the workplace.

People who experience bullying behaviors in the workplace can have increased stress, health problems and family problems in addition to: lower productivity, higher absenteeism and higher staff turnover. One study found that employees experiencing bullying spend up to half their time at work dealing with the bullying and canvassing their co-workers for moral support. Workplace bullying can be hard for others to recognize and can involve a variety of behaviours from negative gossip and unfair criticism to offensive jokes and tampering with personal belongings. There are laws against some extreme types of bullying, including: o Bullying someone on any grounds protected under Alberta’s Human Rights Act, such as race, religion, disability, or sexual orientation (www.albertahumanrights.ab.ca). o Violence or threats of violence can be investigated by Occupational Health & Safety (http://work.alberta.ca/ohs) and the police. The majority of research in bullying has found that the best way to reduce bullying is to focus on promoting healthy relationships. Healthy relationships are created by promoting communication, respect, trust and support. Employers can promote healthy workplace relationships by: o Asking leadership to model the way – lead by example. o Including zero-tolerance on bullying in their corporate values. o Explaining to staff how bullying behavior contravenes the organization’s values. o Establishing and communicating a zero-tolerance policy and procedure for reporting/resolving workplace bullying. The Government of Alberta recognizes that Bullying is a serious issue and has released Alberta’s Plan for Promoting Healthy Relationships and Preventing Bullying. The plan outlines Alberta’s strategic approach to prevent bullying and includes many strategies focused on promoting healthy workplace cultures. Government also offers resources to assist Albertans who are experiencing workplace bullying. Try visiting www.bullyfreealberta.ca or calling the Bullying Helpline: 1-888-456-2323. The ALIS website (http://alis.alberta.ca) also offers tip sheets on bullying: • Bullies at Work: What to Know, What You Can Do • Employers: What You Need to Know About Bullying in the Workplace Coworkers can play an important role in eliminating bullying in their workplace. Wednesday, February 25, 2015 is Pink Shirt Day. You can help send the message that bullying behavior is no longer acceptable by getting everyone in the office to wear a pink shirt that day. You can make it even more fun by sharing your Pink Shirt office photos on Twitter using the hashtag #albertapink.
