Working Wise Dear Working Wise: I heard there is a program that helps companies train new employees? I’ve been struggling to find enough drivers for my transportation company for years now. What’s the program? Could I use it to train more drivers? If so, how do I get the money? Signed Excited Employer Dear Excited: Yes, the federal and provincial governments just launched the Canada-Alberta Job Grant to help employers provide the right training to the right people for the jobs that are in demand.

©iStockphoto.com/rilueda

Do you have a work-related question? Send your questions to Working Wise, at charles.strachey@gov.ab.ca. Charles Strachey is a manager with Alberta Human Services. This column is provided for general information.

This program will help address the skills mismatch in Alberta where employers struggle to attract and retain skilled workers while nearly 100,000 Alberta workers sit idle. The program is employer-driven, which means employers decide who gets trained and what kind of training is needed for new and existing employees. Employers are expected to cover one-third of the training costs with the government covering the other two-thirds, up to a maximum of $10,000 in total government contributions per employee per year. That means Alberta workers could receive up to a total of $15,000 of new career-related training under the Canada-Alberta Job Grant. Private and not-for-profit Alberta employers are eligible to apply. And they must commit to hiring or continuing to employ the trainee once the training is complete. Employers are capped at a $300,000 annual maximum to ensure all employers have an opportunity to take advantage of the grant. Eligible training expenses include tuition, books and supplies and mandatory fees. Employee wages cannot be reimbursed through the Canada-Alberta Job Grant. The program is very flexible. Training can be part time or full time, in the workplace, in a class room, or delivered via distance learning. However, training must be a minimum of 25 hours, be completed within 52 weeks, and result in some sort of credential or grade. The training must also be incremental—it must be new training that is not already happening or would have happened anyway without the funding. And trainers must be third party—the employer cannot also be the trainer. Most people living in Alberta are eligible to be trained under the grant, but those working here under a temporary work permit are not eligible. The process for accessing the Canada-Alberta Job Grant funding is: 1. Identify training needs/trainees 2. Select a training program/provider 3. Submit an Application form 4. Receive approval 5. Pay for the training in full 6. Submit Reimbursement form and receipts from the training provider 7. Government reimburses the employer for one-third of the training costs 8. Employee completes the training 9. Submit a training Completion form 10. Government reimburses the employer the remaining one-third of the training costs All of the forms and instructions are available at http://albertacanada.com/jobgrant. This web site also offers more information, including an Applicant Guide, Videos, and an informative Question and Answer sheet on the Canada-Alberta Job Grant. If you have any more questions about the Canada-Alberta Job Grant, you can call the Helpline toll-free at 1-855-638-9424 or 780-638-9424 in Edmonton.
