Shortly after Thorin's life began it nearly ended, at the bottom of a dumpster, where the person who had seen him into the world left him. Thorin's first impressions of people were defined by neglect and abandonment. At the time of his rescue and for a while afterwards, he was fearful and mistrusting of people. He wouldn't bite or act violently; he simply became defensive, tensing and making fearful little noises when he felt threatened. He was placed in foster care, where his devoted foster mother worked with him daily, to build trust and show him that there are people in the world capable of providing love and attentive care. Slowly but surely, Thorin came round and warmed to his foster mother. Gradually, he warmed to others, too. When you visit Thorin, he doesn't scurry into the blind of an enclosure. He doesn't tense or become nervous. He watches you, inspecting your movement, listening for your voice, evaluating your intentions. Raise your hand and bring it slowly downward to his ears, which lie flat at rest, and he'll let you pet him. As you gently caress his fur, a trustful bond is forged, and he lets you hold him. Thorin's eyes are the blue of a thickening dusk - a rare attribute for a rabbit. Each eye is circled by black fur, which at first camouflages their arresting appeal. To appreciate or even notice them, you must get closer, and to get closer you must've already built the requisite trust. It's almost a natural precautionary feature. Thorin needs assurances before he grants you an audience. But once he has and you're permitted to gaze closely into the rare watery blue, you're met with a gaze that stares back into you, in search of a reliable, life-long companion.

Working Wise Dear Working Wise: My niece applied for a new job at another company and was told that she had the job. She put in her notice with her current employer and worked the full notice period, but her new employer told her when she was ready to start work that they had hired back a former employee and didn’t need her anymore—leaving her with no job. Is this allowed when the job offer was made over the phone? Signed, Aggravated Aunt ©iStockphoto.com/Goodluz
Dear Aggravated: I am afraid that I don’t have great news for you and your niece. Alberta’s Employment Standards do not address revoked job offers. This would most likely be considered a “civil” legal matter.
Do you have a work-related question? Send your questions to Working Wise, at charles.strachey@gov.ab.ca. Charles Strachey is a manager with Alberta Human Services. This column is provided for general information.
Your niece would have to sue the employer for damages. But without written proof of a job offer, your niece wouldn’t have much luck proving in court that she quit her job, because she was offered a job by the new employer.
The best advice I can offer is for your niece to start looking for another job and use this as a valuable lesson. Be sure you are confident in the organization and offer before you accept a job offer and get the job offer in writing before you hand in your resignation. • Before accepting a new job, she should also consider asking: • When and where will I be working and for how long? • Is there any shift work, overtime, or travel? • Is overtime paid or unpaid? Some professions are exempted. • What is the salary or wage? • Are there any performance bonuses or commissions? • Will I receive tips? If so, am I expected to share them? • Are there scheduled salary increases? • Am I required to use my personal vehicle? If so, will I be compensated for mileage and insurance costs? • What other benefits do you offer, e.g., health, dental, retirement savings, vacation, sick days, personal days, severance pay, employee wellness programs, parking? • If I quit my job for this job and you revoke the offer, how will I be compensated? You can evaluate the job offer and compensation package by: • Reviewing the Alberta Occupational Profiles available on the Alberta Learning Information Service (ALIS) web site at www.alis.alberta.ca; and • Looking at the Alberta Wage and Salary Survey on the ALIS web site. If you are unsatisfied with the salary offered, but are still interested in the job, you might want to counter the employer’s offer. Try suggesting benefits that have little or no cost, like an extra week of vacation, free parking, or a better job title. Careful, once you have accepted the job, it will be tough to negotiate changes to the offer. If your niece would like any help finding her next job, please encourage her to visit her nearest Alberta Works Centre http://humanservices.alberta.ca/offices. Good luck!
