Welcome to the first issue of One Lovely Day. As most of you would know that I made the announcement regarding the branding transition from My Little Jedi to One Lovely Day and I would like to introduce you to the very first issue of One Lovely Day which going forward will be all about weddings, engagements and bridal showers. Although I still have a soft spot for My Little Jedi (as the business name was inspired by my son Aniken) the name doesn’t reflect what I do so having a new name I believe it will breathe new life into my business. I would like to thank the fabulous Tabitha who designed our new look which I absolutely love. Most of all I would love to thank you all for your continuous support and I hope you love the new name. I would like to close off this wonderful year with this gorgeous issue and i would also like to thank the fabulous contributors for the most amazing styled events and I hope you enjoy what we have in store for you. Be prepared for an absolute fiesta of gorgeousness and beauty. Thank you once again for your support and have blissful Christmas and New Year.

Boho Chic Goddess I have always been smitten by beach & boho inspired weddings. I admire the relaxed sea backdrop and the gorgeous sheer flowing gowns with delicate details. This season I have combined my love of modern and whimsical and we have come up with a “Boho Chic Goddess” look and feel. What I love the most is the timeless simplicity. With summer just around the corner, it’s already showing its true colours in Sydney and we couldn’t have asked for a better day for this shoot. Shot in the heart of Sydney, overlooking the harbour bridge, the serenity was just magical. Dewi created the stunning two tier white cake with ruffle details and touch of glitter. I believe the most captivating shoots are those that are completely organic and this was no different. Christina’s angelic face was perfect for the look I was going for and Katerina captured each moment beautifully. I must give a HUGE thank you to all of the incredible vendors. The shoot definitely would not have gone the way it did without them. The Language of Food

‘I love making people happy,’ says Mario Karam, namesake and owner of Mario’s kitchen. ‘Food is how I express myself, it’s how I show my emotions, to my family and to the world.’ To Mario, food is language. In his ten years as a professional caterer, he has evolved and refined a style of cooking that communicates much more than his cultural Lebanese background, although his heritage certainly has an impact on the flavours he creates, as well as his passion for entertaining. His influences embrace a broad palate of cultures, and could even be described as ‘Global Cuisine.’ ‘It really depends on the event,’ Mario explains. ‘I try to capture the emotion and personality of the client in the whole package – the ambience and design, as well as the food. So the colours, flavours and textures of an event could be influenced from anywhere in the world, blended together in so many unexpected ways to make the night completely unique. I want to surprise people. To excite them.’ Which is why collaboration is such an important part of the creative process. Mario loves to meet with his clients to get a feel for the type of event they envision, their personality and individual style. Whether it’s a wedding, prewedding, baptism or thirtieth birthday party, each celebration will be a completely unique experience. ‘We create the most innovative menu to compliment your memorable event,’ says Mario. It’s this versatility that has earned him the growing popularity Mario’s kitchen is enjoying, because there is nothing generic in his approach to food and design. Established in 2011, Mario’s kitchen caters for a broad range of events. Working closely with his team of creatives, Mario has catered for numerous functions of all different sizes. Mario loves big parties, and even a five hundred guest dinner will feel intimate because of his attention to detail. Everything from the place settings and furniture to the flowers and fabrics will reflect the theme and character of the celebration, and compliment the food he serves. But Mario also relishes smaller events – an intimate anniversary for two will be just as unforgettable and vibrant a dining experience as a six hundred guest birthday party. Which brings us to the food. Mario hand picks all his own ingredients from the freshest local markets and grocers, and everything is made from scratch, which is why it’s so authentic and delicious. It’s wholesome, home cooking at its best, and reflects the passion and love of flavour Mario inherited from his family. ‘Nature is perfection,’ says Mario. ‘My passion is to create food which upholds its original beauty and taste.’

His influences come from all over the world, making it impossible to pigeonhole his work. Indian, Greek, Italian and Thai are just some of the cultural flavours he incorporates into his cooking, creating an unexpected and innovative fusion of tastes to delight the palate. It’s fresh, unique and visually exciting. Mario created this wedding event to reflect a botanical, whimsical theme. Filled with dreamy old-world romance, the setting is a bride’s fantasy. The rough textures of the recycled wood table contrast superbly with the delicate flower arrangement and the vintage place settings. 1920’s Glamour & Elegance “Get your glad rags on and join us Hon” the line is perfect how the era of Great Gatsby is described… glamorously dressed flappers and handsome daddy’s enjoying their drinks and dancing the night away. I tried to infuse the photo shoot with the area both in clothing, make up, hair and vintage garments and car. As it is a high tea wedding I have picked the more nontraditional color for art deco of teal and combined with ivory and gold. The coloring and styling is perfect for a small intimate wedding, bridal shower or day after soiree. It is light and airy that is perfect for any time of the year and works great as indoor or garden party. The Graydon Hall Manor was the perfect location for the backdrop of the shoot as it is just that and much more in its exquisite décor and perfectly landscaped gardens. The food reflect the high tea feel with different kinds of tea’s, mini sandwiches, scones and fruit served beautifully on a vintage 3 tiered plates and chargers. The mismatched chine plates and tea cups give a whimsical and vintage feel that feels perfect for such a soiree. Small 4 people tables allow the guest to mingle and take in the décor and gardens. The dessert table has a mixture of a 3 tired cake for more traditional feel with some little treats thrown in like cupcakes, cake pops, cookie and macaroons. A different approach to serving meringues is a meringue cake that presents the meringues in a more unique and fun way. A perfect way to arrive or leave the party is a vintage top down Excalibur car. The feel of the 1920’s would not be right without the stylish dresses that were vintage inspired , and many of which are made from vintage shawls and lace. This marries beautifully with the hair accessories that are using both vintage and new materials in its creations.

VV: Tell us a little about you, the woman behind “Cristina Re”? CR: Ever since I was a little girl, I have been extremely passionate about illustration, graphic design together with photography. My European background and upbringing provided me with an appreciation for fine art and design. I was fortunate to have studied at an art school in Northern Italy, where I first developed my artistic and illustration skills. I first began drawing at the age of five and continued my studies in design for many years. I have always been passionate about high design, innovation and setting trends. I also believe I was a bit of a visionary, as I was constantly thinking about new and original ideas that had not been thought about. I was determined to be my own boss from the very beginning and my mission was to be an entrepreneur and successful business woman. As soon as I graduated with an Honours degree from Swinburne University Of Design, I immediately started my own freelance design and wedding /portrait photography business in 1994. I was one of the very first female wedding photographers in Australia and challenged myself to provide a fashionable and glamorous approach to my work. I also began designing unique stationery for my wedding clients experimenting with beautiful paper stocks and printing techniques, and soon discovered a niche in the retail market for fashionable contemporary invitations that were readily available and affordable. I created the DIY concept after I received numerous requests for printable papers with my signature patterns that people could personalize themselves at home to make wedding and party invitations. The concept took off in a big way and I expanded the range to include an array of accessories and tools. Today the stationery range encompasses over 500 stationery and craft products and is sold to over 1000 stores around the world. Further to this, the company has evolved and diversified by introducing new categories including homewares and bath and body which carry my signature style of design and packaging. Developing these new gifting categories are now the focus of the company with the aim of reinventing the Cristina Re brand to become the leading name in everyday ‘affordable luxury’ products.


It was not long before I discovered the challenges of owning your own business however. Growing my business over the last 15 years has shaped the strong and determined person that I am today – I have discovered that running a business does not always offer the luxury to be creative all the time as many perceive, but rather it pushes you to develop business and management skills that become the true keys to success. In summary, the woman behind the brand is someone that loves beautiful design, is constantly aiming to create and innovate, but also strives to become a better and smarter business woman everyday. I have also made it my priority to ensure that the people that work with me are constantly nurtured, inspired and motivated. I believe in giving back and inspiring woman to explore their creativity and intuition to find their true path to happiness. VV: What has been the most exciting moment of your career? CR:There have been many exciting moments in my business life, but I would have to say that appearing and presenting on a few TV shows, including the 9am Morning Show, Coxi’s Big Break and Postcards were very exciting and memorable experiences. VV: What inspires your art/design style and how would you describe your style? CR: I draw my inspiration from my travels around the world, in particular Rome (I was born in Rome and lived and studied in Italy for a number of years), Paris and Asia. I am inspired by nature, by the flora and fauna of Australia and many other beautiful countries. I am influenced by art & design from the past, and am also a big fan of beautiful interior design and draw inspiration from old vintage fabrics and wallpaper. You could say I also love fashion and beautiful packaging, and follow trends from around the world to help me create my new ranges. VV: Tell us little more about where a girl goes high tea, how did the concept come about? CR: I originally created my store Where A Girl Goes to offer a unique shopping destination, whereby shoppers could be taken on a journey of the senses. I wanted to create a beautiful environment that would showcase my designer gift products (from stationery, homewares and bath and body products) whilst also providing refreshments and coffees at my in-store Tea Salon. The original focus of the store was the retail area offering the stationery and gift products, however I soon noticed the trend in ladies coming to experience the delicious signature cupcakes, pastel coloured French macarons and Belgian hand painted chocolates together with the signature tea blends that were designed especially for my store.



I decided to introduce high tea and within a short amount it became the main activity of the store. The High Tea Collection of products are an evolution of this concept, and my desire has been to provide beautiful vintage inspired tea ware and matching accessories in gorgeous keepsake boxes reminiscent of days gone by. VV: What is your day-to-day like? CR: Very Busy! I am a very hands-on worker and like to oversee every creative element of the business. I am passionate about design and believe it is important to inspire and motivate my team of 20 staff to ensure that they understand and believe in the vision. Having said this, my days consist of overseeing the creative process of creating new designs and products, marketing my company and brand, whilst also managing the rest of the business from a higher level as well. VV: What are the secrets of running a successful business? CR: Being a good leader and role model to my staff is essential. Having a good team of people to support you is critical. In order to create a good team I believe that communication is the key to achieving success. I also believe in treating my staff the way I like to be treated myself, and have a philosophy of work life balance. I aim to provide a beautiful and highly creative environment that inspires and breeds success. VV: What are your long term goals? CR: My long term goals are to further expand my line of giftware products by continuing to offer innovative and beautiful lines that tell a unique story. I would also like to develop the Where A Girl Goes High Tea concept to offer customers the ultimate celebratory experience , and to make a difference in the world by inspiring others. VV: What is your favourite place in the world? CR: I would have to say Paris! VV: Tell us 3 things you can’t live without? CR: My poodle ‘Honey’, my camera and my fionce Jason Faulkner who is my soulmate and business partner. VV: If you could pick another career what would it be and why? CR: Hmm, I always wanted to be a dancer ever since I was a little girl, however my overactive mind would have been bored without the ability to think and create all the time. Ultimately, I would want to be a successful writer of self help books. I am fascinated by the power of the mind and all things spiritual and esoteric. Retro wedding Styled By Belle recently styled a retro wedding in the fun colour palette of sunny yellow and aqua blue. It was a chance to be “cheesy” and “cute” as we went back in time to the rockabilly of the 50’s and mod of the 60’s. The bride and groom stepped away from the contemporary and wore funky vintage bridal wear. The bride in a short ivory lace shift dress with pearls and lace gloves. The groom wore slim cut sky blue pants matched with turquoise tweed blazer, along with quirky yellow braces and a bow tie. The couple showed their fun side by wearing a pop of colour on their feet with aqua coloured shoes. Hair and makeup was an important feature of the vintage years and the bride wore her hair in a high bee-hive with rolled fringe. Her eyebrows and eyeliner were strong and defined, and her lips a deep red. The groom had his hair styled into a perfect quiff, very reminiscent of a slick James Dean. At the reception, the bride slipped into a fun yellow lace dress and let her long curled tresses fall to her waist. Guests were treated to a delicious spread of desserts at the “Sweet Love” dessert stand. Rather than go for a traditional wedding cake, the mod couple decided to serve a home-baked sponge cake layered with cream and dressed with fresh flowers. Other sweet treats included a range of gorgeous macaron stacks, lemon meringue puffs, lemon tarts and chiffon cupcakes. Old style ginger beer was served with retro yellow striped paper straws. The table decor was bright and eye-catching with a retro print tablecloth, mis-matched yellow & blue Bentwood chairs, coloured glass and serving ware, bow tie folded napkins, and eclectic display of yellow blooms in blue mason jars. The flowers included an array of yellow blossoms including divine craspedia balls (Billy Buttons), ranunculus, daffodils and roses with foliage and berries. Guests were given jars of homemade jam and a disc of the couples favourite love songs to take home as favours. Understated Elegance \ For sometime now I've had the dream of using a piano as a dessert table. With the help of some amazingly talented people I took this dream and made it a reality. My inspirational quote for the shoot was "Life is a Song. Love is the Music." Pretty and Print designed the wedding invitation and other printables with this quote in mind. The colour palette was black, white and red. These colours were chosen to achieve a sexy, sleek and elegant look. For maximum impact the top level of the piano was used to display an amazing array of five spectacular cakes. Each cake had its own personality but suited the concept. I asked Jacki from Blissfully Sweet to describe each of the amazing cakes she created and these were her words: "When I thought about what I wanted to create for this stunning shoot created by Natalie, I kept to the design brief provided. Sexy, black and white with touches of red and elegance. I then got to thinking of some cakes with complimentary designs that would best suit. The main cake was a tower of black elegance and I wanted to incorporate movement of music in this cake, so single row of ruffles was snaked in a wave design on the side of the entire cake to give the illusion of movement. The second cake was sexy, elegant and rustic at the same time. Silver leaf was roughly added to this cake to give it that gleam and then ruffled blooms cascaded down the front. The third cake was again a play on movement. Alternating black and white tiers had their designs in white and black small beads – simple, yet effective. The two smaller accent cakes framed the main three and also incorporated that touch of red. One cake had the graphics by Pretty & Print as the main feature with the LOVE insignia and the other had a red bow tied around the middle. These simple touches made the cakes a complete set." The piano chair was used to display the rock candy swizzle sticks along with favors for the guests which included personalised chocolate bars and musical inspired tea light holders. The bridal bouquet was designed and made by Red Poppies. Red flowers were chosen to provide contrast with the bridal gown and complement the red and black fascinator worn by the bride model. The wedding dress provided by Vellos Bridal was sleek and elegant. Overall, the scene was set for an amazing musical inspired sexy, sleek and elegant wedding. Casablanca This Casablanca themed event was styled for my client Aaron, who was celebrating his 40th Birthday. Aaron is a huge fan of the classic 1940s movie Casablanca, and a real movie buff at heart. When planning and styling this buffet I wanted to maintain the masculinity of the leading man. I drew on the colour black, making it my base, then added silver and old gold for that real, vintage movie feel. The 1940s was a classy era, so I added the silver and depression glassware with accents of the movie added in the cookies Casablanca was mainly set in a saloon, so I decided to add the drinks trolley to add to the theme and story.We kept the cake simple, adding some bow ties to match the leading man and gorgeous tuxedo cupcakes all made by 2 sisters cakes. I added accents of the film in the cookies, with edible printed images on them by Just call me Martha along with the cake pops. Wendy from Green Beansie Ink made the invitation, printable’s and backdrop, which really helped bring the theme to life. VV: Tell us a little about you, the woman behind “Maggie Austin Cakes”? MA: I’m a former ballet dancer who made a major career change. While ballet will always be my first love, the peaceful and quiet nature of my work now is a perfect fit for my personality. My sister manages the business, which allows me to concentrate on design and instruction. This is, at heart, a family business. VV: What has been the most exciting moment of your career? MA: I'm too much of an introvert for "excitement", but the very first wedding cake I ever made was on national TV as part of the Today Show. Perhaps nerve-wracking would be a better term! VV: What inspires your art/design style and how would you describe your style? MA: I think ballet has a very strong influence on my aesthetic. The restraint, attention to detail, and harmonious rhythm of the designs come directly from the idea of art as movement. For the same reason, fashion is a constant source of inspiration. But I also think that my sense of humor is a major contributor as well! VV: If you could make a cake for a celebrity, who would you choose and why? MA: Oprah! She's getting married soon and our mom's a huge fan. VV: What is your day-to-day like? MA: I am fortunate enough to live above our beautiful studio in Alexandria, VA. That way, I can start making sugar flowers while my morning coffee brews. Our work week is very intense, but I try to get out to the museums and gardens as much as possible. We're lucky to be in such a artistically rich part of the world. Like any small business owner, I'm never really away from my work. Thank goodness I love it! VV: What are the secrets of running a successful business? MA: I think that finding a compatible business partner with a complementary skill set is essential. Clearly delineated responsibilities keeps everyone from burning out. Another secret is learning to ask questions. Running a business presents innumerable and extremely varied challenges, but true experts delight in sharing their knowledge. A thorough understanding of the problem at hand means that your capacity to solve it is at its best. "I need your help," is a powerful phase. VV: What is your favourite place in the world? MA: Illkley Moor in West Yorkshire, England. I have fond childhood memories of playing in the heather. VV: Tell us 3 things you can't live without? MA: My teapot (afternoon tea is a must), my red lipstick, and my iPad VV: If you could pick another career (apart from pastry chef) what would it be and why? MA: I've always loved the idea of living on a farm and tending sheep, though my sister teases me about my aversion to manual labor. A Botanical Wedding For me nothing says botanical more than flowers, outdoors and romance. We couldn’t have asked for a dreamier wedding theme to work with. With the location in an inner city Sydney park, this botanical wedding really came to life. We found an amazing fig tree, this created an ideal back drop to the dessert table and also provided the perfect amount of shade for the sweets. The wedding cake was a French vanilla sponge, layered with custard and fruit in the shape of a bowl of flowers. Sugar flowers adorned the top of the cake to give the finished effect. There were Lilies, Orchards, Roses and Tulips all in the shade of white to create a soft look against the black base. The bride and groom had their own mini cakes, which were topped with sugar orchards. The dessert table was adorned with palmier pastries, pistachio and cranberry nougat, coconut macaroons, (not to be mistaken with macarons) in the shape of a pear, we then decorated the macaroons with green sugared leaves to complete the look. My personal favourite were the sliced dried apples drizzled with toffee….a very grown up and less mess approach to the childhood favourite of mine, toffee apples. The guest table was set up a short distance away on a lawn area. Linens matching the dessert table were used to tie the look together. The table was decorated with lots of small vases differing in size and shape. These were then filled with flowers all chosen for their strong form and soft colours. The flowers not only helped create the botanical theme but also acted as the perfect table runner, not too high so that the guests view of each other wasn’t obscured. Vintage drinking glasses were chosen as the gold detailing on them matched perfectly with the gold thread in the quilted table linen. The guests name places were written on their own mini flower vases , this not only added to the beauty of the table centerpiece but made the perfect take home gift. We also set up a drinking station were guests could help themselves to a refreshing punch served in a cut crystal pedestal punch bowl. On offer also were small bottles of Italian lemonade ‘Limonata”. We created custom labels for the lemonade bottles complete with botanical styled images of lemons. We love how we were able to keep the styling of this wedding elegantly simple which allowed the beauty of nature all around to shine. Held In the beautiful gardens of Tieve Tara in Mt Macedon, Victoria was the most magical dreamy spring garden soiree you’ve ever seen, complete with a beautiful table setting for its guests on the main lake which included lemon macarons, chocolate truffles, and a gorgeous Watermelon coloured ruffle cake as the centre piece of the table, made by Cjs sweet treats. Guests could sit and enjoy a cup of tea in the pastel coloured Royal Albert tea cups and a piece of the delicious vanilla bean ruffle cake in this beautiful serene setting. A bright yellow vintage trolley was set on the old wooden bridge going across the main lake so guests walking around enjoying the gardens could take a break and indulge in a glass of sparkling spring punch, which was a mix of citrus spritzer, champagne and fresh fruit. The pastel coloured tassel garland hung over the drink cart to give a more whimsy party feel. Pour everything into beverage dispenser with some ice to keep cool and refreshing and its ready to serve. Upon the garden steps stood the divine dessert table with the most amazing four tiered cake made by Couture Cake house Melbourne with the sweetest mini cakes and chocolate tasting plates either side also including yummy blueberry macarons. Down the steps to the smaller lake was a more laid back area for guests to unwind on whimsy high back chairs with cushions so they could get comfy and relax with a cupcake and glass of punch. The area was decorated with giant balloons with lace and ribbon tassels & some brightly painted vintage suitcases. This spring garden soiree in such stunning gardens is the perfect setting for any occasion from a special birthday party to an elegant wedding so pretty & tranquil. Whimsical Wedding I was so excited to have been given the opportunity to style a wedding shoot and being a whimsical theme I decided to have fun with it and do something quite unusual colour wise. When I sat to down to think about what I would like to incorporate into the shoot, I just couldn't go past the beautiful brooch bouquets from Liza at LillyBuds Brooch Bouquets. I have admired Lizas creations for a long time and was so thrilled that she wanted to be a part of the shoot. A stunning blue bouquet was available at the time so it was easy decided that blue would be the main colour! Given it was just the start of spring and my interpretation of whimsical is something unique, I chose the colour orange to accompany the blue to create a fun, bright and spring wedding. I chose raw looking furniture as the colours were so bright i felt they needed to be on a plain surface and managed to find a cute set of lime washed furniture to display all the sweets. A beautiful queen anne dresser was the main table to display cakes and jars which had a Mr and Mrs lace bunting hanging across the front. Behind this table, up high in the tree behind, hung cute hanging vases full of orange and blue blooms. Then venue I chose was a beautiful homestead built in the 1860s that is surrounded by beautiful greenery and is so peaceful! Emma from Emma Smith Stationery put to paper exactly what is was envisioning (as always) and created the gorgeous doily and lace inspired design which was used throughout the shoot. I love the casualty of the font Emma has used on the bunting and calico favour bag design, its so sweet and perfect for a Whimsy spring wedding! The buntings Emma made were so lovingly detailed and the lace added such a romantic feel. An amazing team of talented Perth ladies was formed and each contributed something stunning to the day. Sandy from Sandy’s cakes created 4 cakes that were each an absolute work of art and I am so grateful to have had such a talented lady on board. I have never seen such pretty cakes in my life. The cupcakes were also made by Sandy and the doily and love heart theme was used on these also. The lovely Kate from Kate’s Cookies made the cutest and yummiest cookies that I feel in love with straight away. Such a sweet favour to give your guests as a take home gift! One of my favourite elements to this shoot was the flowers and Tali from Twigged did such a wonderful job of creating some truly stunning flower arrangements. My favourite being the display inside the wagon = so perfect! Tali’s choice of flowers and attention to detail in arrangements were so breathtaking and the combinations of white, orange and blue were amazing! When I pictured the bride for this shoot, I knew I wanted her to be a princess bride. The perfect dress was found at Bridal Obsessions and had just the right amount of poof! Choosing my models was easy! After witnessing my sister as the most stunning bride on her wedding day two years ago, I knew there was no one who could possibly look more beautiful in this dress than my sister, Natasha! And my little Sienna is the sweetest little thing on earth, how could she possibly not be involved! The whole day was captured beautifully by the awesome Stephen from Stephen Clarke Photography who is such a pleasure to work with and always gives me wonderful photo memories of these events which I put together with so much love. It was a beautiful day and such a thrill to see my vision come together so perfectly with the help of everyone involved.

Vintage High Tea


I have the most beautiful clients, this family would be one of my most photographed. I've known them all since they were born and its' been a delight watching them grow up. Plus they have the most beautiful parents and the idea of a daddy's father’s day high tea in the forest came to me one night. Actually in the shower where most of my ideas come from. How cute would it be to have these 3 little girls invite their daddy to a father’s day high tea. (squeal) Their grandparents live on the most beautiful property at oxford, with the most spectacular ruins and a family of deer living amongst it. Could it get any better… I approached Blissfully Sweet who provided 3 beautiful mini cakes for the girls, and Pretty and Print for the beautiful printables, she designed a different flower pattern for each little girl. Chanele rose styling provided me with the beautiful mini bouquets and the lovely dresses were made by Dressed to frill and were just perfect. I couldn't' have been more delighted with their little high tea shoot. New Years Eve is such a wonderful time to celebrate, the end of one year, the beginning of another, where we look forward to our future and all that our heart desires. In keeping with the love of bright colour we are seeing in fashion this season, I have put together a dessert table with pops of colour, full of sweet! New Years Eve Celebrations are often a little different to many other events planned. Where other functions may run to a timetable or schedule…guests arriving at 7:00, food begins at 7:30 etc…New Years Eve parties, for us, are often more of an open house. Some guests may arrive at 7:30pm and some may not show until half past 10. For this reason, I always like to set up a dessert table that can be easily restocked, so that it can be fully enjoyed, no matter what time guests arrive! Our table features Oreo Truffles, Doughnuts and Mango & Coconut Trifle. Jars of lollies keep things sweet with a bowl of salted butter popcorn adding that touch of savoury. We have added a cake to sparkle and be cut after the New Years countdown is complete. Bottles of bubbly are perfect for New Years Eve and keeping a selection chilled ensures all your guests’ tastes will be satisfied. Items that may not last on the table, like mini fairy floss and ice creams, can be served throughout the night, adding that little extra treat and wow factor to your celebrations. New Years Eve parties can sometimes be thought of as more of an adult affair, however most of our friends have children, and with six of my own, being prepared for a house full of children makes sense. I always like to put together a little treat bag that shows they were well considered in the party preparations. It puts a smile on their faces and helps to keep little ones entertained so Mum and Dad can relax and enjoy festivities as well. Christmas is always such a busy and stressful time for everyone. If you are anything like me you have great intentions of giving out lovely favours to special friends but time always gets the better of you and suddenly you are scrambling to find something. I have put together for you some really simple and cute favour ideas for Christmas that are so quick and easy to make that you will have your favours sorted in one afternoon. With neon being all the rage this year I have based all my ideas around this colour theme but everything here will also work perfectly with the traditional Christmas colours as well.



A mini glass jar filled with bright lollies or sweet treats and decorated with washi tape - simple and cute. I have used my Merry Christmas stamp stamped onto the washi tape and stuck on the front of the jar.

A bright tag stamped with Merry Christmas makes anything look cool. Fill these little clip jars with heart shaped sweets for the kids or marmalade and jam for the adults and decorate the lid! Easy as that!

If you’re going to invest in one luxury item, I say make it a handbag that will last forever. And I am a complete neat freak when it comes to my bag every weekend I sort through it, removing receipts and other random items that somehow snuck in during the week. An organized bag is essential! What’s in Brooke’s bag: NARS compact powder – I’m not really a makeup kinda girl but I rarely go anywhere without my powder, especially when I know I’m going to be out for most of the day. Louis Vuitton Shades – I plead guilty. These shades previously belonged to my husband. They’re from the men’s collection however I took quite a liking to them, more so than my husband, so they now belong to me ;) Louis Vuitton Diary – The one item I truly can’t live without. I’ve attempted to change over to electronic diaries on a number of occasions, but each time I revert back to my good old paper diary. There’s just something so satisfying about physically ticking off the to-do list. Benefit Brow Kit – I’ve recently just learned how to do my eyebrows properly and now I’m obsessed. If you need a new brow kit, this one is gold. NARS Lipsticks – love them! Skinnygirl lip plumping lip gloss – I purchased this gloss because it doesn’t have any of the really nasty chemicals that most lip plumping glosses do. And although I don’t think the lip plumping really works, I do love the colour. Michael Kors ‘Very Hollywood’– this little baby is genius! One end is a lip gloss, and the other is perfume. Every handbag needs one of these. Benefit They’re Real mascara and Benefit eyeliner – Benefit make the best eye makeup and brow products and they also do free makeup lessons with purchase of product. iPhone – my third hand ;) What Would Karl Do – this was a little pressie from Jess of What Would Karl Do. It’s super handy and travels everywhere with me. Lanolips lip gloss – just 1 of about 5 that I have. I mean really, you can never have too many lip glosses right? Sweet Christmas Celebration As Diarne was born in July what better way to celebrate her 2nd birthday than to have a “Christmas in July” The colour palette started when i had come across a lavender coloured Christmas tree at an antique store that's what set the colour theme for the event. The fabulous Emma from Emma smith Stationary created the most gorgeous invitations and printables including invitations, thank you tags, dessert labels &chocolate wrappers to set the mood. As for the dessert table the talented Juli from one sweet girl created the gorgeous macaroon tree and all the delicious mini desserts for the guests.. It was all fun and excitement when the children arrived, they were given a halo for a party hat and a bonbon to pop to get into the spirit of Christmas and as they were leaving there take home gifts were stunning “Pastiglie Leone Lolly tins”. All the hard work and detail was all well worth it when you saw the expression on the children's little faces. Puzzle Me, Eat Me!

Recipe and Tutorial by Alison Lawson Cakes In order to get started, you need a batch of cookie dough. Use your own favourite recipe, or try my Spiced Sugar Cookie recipe below. Spiced Sugar Cookies 200g unsalted butter 170g caster sugar 30g cinammon sugar 1 egg lightly beaten 400g plain flour • In an electric mixer, beat the butter and sugars together until well combined. • Add the egg and gently combine. • Add the flour and carefully mix until everything comes together. • Bring the dough together with your hands and mould into a disc shape. • Cover your dough with plastic wrap and rest it in the fridge for 30-60 minutes.

You will also need the following: 1 piece of A4 sized paper Ruler Pencil Scissors Sharp knife Pastry brush Water Baking tray Baking paper RTR fondant Cornflour Pink colouring gel Purple colouring gel http://alisonlawsoncakes.com/


You should have your cookie dough resting in the fridge. While you are waiting, make a Christmas Tree template on a piece of paper. You can make your Christmas Tree any size, or follow my dimensions below.

Step One

Divide your template into puzzle pieces and cut each piece out with scissors.

Step Two

When your cookie dough is well rested, roll it out to an even thickness of around 5mm. Place your template pieces onto the dough and cut each cookie puzzle piece out with a sharp knife. If your dough is difficult to manage, pop the rolled piece of dough into the freezer for a couple of minutes, and have another try.

Step Three


Carefully place your cookie puzzle pieces onto a baking tray covered with baking paper. Cook in a moderate oven for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned. Allow to cool on the tray.

Step Four

Dust your bench or rolling mat with some cornflour and roll out some purple coloured fondant. Place your template pieces onto the fondant and cut each shape out once again with a sharp knife.

Step Five

Brush each cookie puzzle piece with water and place the matching piece of fondant on top. Gently roll each piece to fit with a rolling pin.

Step Six


Gently brush each cookie puzzle piece with edible mauve lustre.

Step Seven

Dust your bench or rolling mat with cornflour and roll out some bright pink coloured fondant. Cut small circles using a cutter, using water to stick them onto your cookie puzzle pieces.

Step Eight

Cut three strips from the pink coloured fondant and add them to your tree trunk cookie piece using water.

Step Nine


Allow your cookie puzzle pieces to dry for at least six hours before wrapping. Cookie puzzle pieces will keep well in an airtight container for up to three weeks‌ that is, if they last that long!

Teddy Bear’s Picnic When thinking of a theme for my 8 year old daughter’s birthday this year, I had so many ideas and couldn’t wait to get started on the preparations. However when I shared these with Talia, she only had one thing in mind... A Teddy bear’s picnic. She absolutely loves her furry bears and has quite a collection, which share her bed, school bag and sometimes even our dining room chairs! I love the fact that my children have a say in everything relating to their parties and love getting involved, from choosing the theme and assisting in styling the dessert table, to baking and even designing their birthday cake. Li Ann from Ham and Pea design & paperie, custom designed the most adorable invitations and matching party accessories to include the fabulous backdrop for the sweets table. A colour palette of yellow, mauve (Talia’s favourite colours) brown and red was used and incorporated throughout the dessert table. The location of the party was the “The old cheese factory” in Berwick, Victoria. This historical park was the perfect venue to host the picnic. I love the old homesteads, built in the 1860’s and the beautiful gardens of this historic park. The children bought along their favourite teddy bear to the picnic and a picnic rug and basket was set up on the lawns for a fun afternoon tea for their furry friends, whilst the children enjoyed some yummy sandwiches and sweets. Sweet treats consisted of bear shaped chocolate macarons, custard honey pots, vanilla cupcakes with edible daisy toppers and the very popular iced donuts. Lemon Vanilla cookies painted with a gingham design were displayed on my favourite classic milk glass cake stand. The Tim Tam bear cake pops were a hit with both the kids and the adults as was the selection of yummy candy displayed in mason jars. The cake was Talia’s favourite, chocolate mud cake with dark chocolate ganache. A huge teddy bear head with a yellow bow adorned the cake which was placed on rustic wooden logs in place of a cake stand. A gorgeous farmers cart was used for the drinks station, which served chocolate milk and apple juice in gorgeous ceramic drink dispensers. The children enjoyed a variety of fun activities, including playing picnic with their teddy’s, the treasure hunt in the secret garden and sack races. Pastel Farmyard Party Our client Megan approached us to design a farm yard dessert table for her daughters second birthday. The brief was simple, farm yard theme with a girly twist. We achieved this look by using a pastel colour palette throughout. The party was scheduled in the first week of spring so we drew inspiration from spring time flowers and cottage style fabrics. The printables set the tone for the rest of the dessert table. Daisy flowers and assorted farm animals. Dessert highlights included farm fresh egg pops, farm animal cookies and a double layered cake featuring a pink barn yard as opposed to the quintessential red barn associated with farm yards. A mobile children's farm entertained the children for the delightful spring party and children took home a tin pail bucket filled with candy. The Icing Smiles team understand that the simple things, like a birthday cake, are luxuries to a family battling illness. Icing Smiles’ goal is to create a custom cake for the ill child, or their sibling, that provides a temporary escape from worry and creates a positive memory during a difficult time. Memories have magical powers. Long after the cake is gone, the memories linger … memories of the kindness of a stranger, of the art of the design, of the sweet smells of a special treat, of the smiles and laughs, of a normal childhood experience so often stolen from these children. These memories are why … "It is so much more than a cake." Icing Smiles originated in the USA in 2010 and is growing in a way that will soon allow the submission of cake requests anywhere in the world. The international expansion of Icing Smiles provides exciting opportunities for passionate volunteers to directly impact the lives of critically ill children and their families. Sweet Celebration In September we created a whimsical wedding with a vintage carnival theme. The bride and groom were very happy with the decor. From over sized ballons to pinwheel boutainneres, the wedding screamed fun. The dessert table encompassed a chalkboard sign for Sweet Confections. We also continued the wedding colors of blue and yellow but added a purple strip to soften the bold colors. A donut tower served as the wedding cake. In addition, cinnamon pretzels, gourmet popcorn, grape cotoon candy and animal crackers captured the essence of the affair.
