Welcome I hope that you all have had a lovely summer despite the variances of the Scottish weather, and are looking forward to autumn, the winter months and of course the festive period. 2010 has been a challenging year for us as we endeavour to increase our income in the current financial climate. Like everyone else, charities have to cope with the effects of a very difficult economy. Our staff and volunteers are working extremely hard trying to generate much needed funds. We have eight shops and are planning to increase this number during the next few months. The summer has seen us modernise and rebrand several of our shops, the latest being the village of Lochwinnoch. By investing in our shops, we aim to increase our revenue and make them much more pleasant places for our supporters and volunteers. The positive news is that we are surviving and still striving to excel in the care of our patients and their families. The successes that we make in generating the funds enables us to continue to provide a ‘platinum’ service for our patients and their families. Patients and families are at the very heart of everything that we stand for, and our recent regulatory inspection report supported that when we were awarded 6’s in all inspected themes, this being the highest score of excellent in all areas. Our staff, volunteers and loyal supporters are to be congratulated in achieving such a high standard of service. We are working in partnership with Ardgowan and the Prince & Princess of Wales Hospices in the Butterfly Project, which is a new and innovative project funded by the Big Lottery to support children and young people affected by bereavement and loss. This is a five year project which will provide a service for Glasgow, Renfrewshire and Inverclyde. Butterflies at St Vincent’s are working in very close collaboration with the Hospice’s Family Support Team providing this service across Renfrewshire. Recently young adults from a local high school, who had all suffered a loss in their family, participated in an eight week programme, which was well received by both the young adults, parents and teaching staff. This is exciting and innovative work to enhance the lives of young adults and children. So, as you can see our patients and their families continue to be at the very heart of everything that we do. A special thanks to all those loyal supporters who have worked beside us all year. We all share a commitment to care with compassion and endeavour to work to provide the best for all who use our services. St Vincent’s Hospice is located in Howwood, Renfrewshire set in beautiful scenic countryside. • The Hospice has provided Specialist Palliative care to the people of Renfrewshire and the surrounding areas for the last 21 years. • We touch the lives of an average of 500 people each month, and our focus has always been to provide our services to the highest of standards. • Care For All – our care is provided to everyone regardless of gender, religion, ethnic origin or age. • The Hospice is governed by the Care Commission and the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator. • We employ approximately 70 staff and have the support of around 200 volunteers. • It costs £1.7 million a year to continue to provide our services. All care is provided at no cost to the patient or their families. We receive almost half of our funding from Greater Glasgow & Clyde Health Board – we need to raise the rest through donations and fundraising activities (£5k per day).

The Butterfly Project Support for Children & Young
People
As part of our ongoing commitment to the health and well being of children and young people, St Vincent’s are currently involved in an innovative new project. The Butterfly project – “Butterflies @ St Vincent’s”, is funded by the Big Lottery and aims to support children and young people affected by life threatening illness in the family. It has been set up across 3 Hospices, St Vincent’s, Ardgowan in Greenock and The Prince & Princess of Wales in Glasgow. Children and young people often feel forgotten about when a death occurs. Parents, rightly so, want to protect their children from the pain they are experiencing yet grief is a natural part of life after death. Children appear to dip in and out of grief, at times they may seem happy then sad and this can be confusing for parents and carers. However if they are allowed to talk about their feelings with those closest to them in a natural way, we have found they can move through their grief and engage with life again. Our project aims to support families and professionals in achieving this goal. Debbie Brownlee, the Project Coordinator, has had many years
experience in children’s community palliative care and she is also a trained counsellor. Butterflies @ St Vincent’s aims to develop a community service that offers: • Individual support • Group therapeutic support • Family support • Advice and information for parents and professionals • Education and training for volunteers and professionals • Signposting/referral to other services where appropriate During the summer – beginning of May till June 2010 – with the help of St Benedict’s High School in Linwood, we were able to run our very first bereavement

support group for young people. Over 8 weeks, it was well attended and received by the young people involved and was voted a success by them, their carers and educational staff. Presently the Butterfly project aims to recruit new volunteers we can train to work with us in offering a service to the communities around the Hospices and to schools. Where? The nurses are based in the Hospice itself and are very much part of St Vincent’s team.
What? The Community Nurse Specialist Team (CNS) provides specialist palliative care advice and support for patients with life-threatening conditions and their families. The service embraces the overall ethos of the Hospice and is provided in the patient’s own home. The C.N.S. facilitates specialist palliative care interventions in tandem with Community Health Providers and liaises closely with the Hospice medical team, the interdisciplinary team and wider multidisciplinary hospital teams. The role includes support for local care homes and offers education for other disciplines within and out with the Hospice. The team consists of three specialist nurses who have extensive experience in palliative care and who, collectively, have Post Graduate Qualifications in Palliative Care, the Specialist Practitioner Qualification and Advanced Communication/Counselling Skills Accreditation. Each team member is committed to ongoing professional education and development in keeping with change and improvement to care provision and service efficacy.
Patients are referred to the service via GP’s, District Nurses, Clinical Nurse Specialists, hospital and community professionals. They can also self refer providing the GP is in support of this.

Referral Criteria: • Advice on symptom management • The patients condition is deteriorating • Complex psychological, spiritual or social issues are detrimental to the patient and family’s wellbeing • Short term intervention by the team during a transitional or challenging period in the patient’s disease trajectory eg. following diagnosis, during chemotherapy People with life limiting disease can have long periods of stability and remission. They are, however, often faced with continual change and adjustment as the disease progresses. Although planning ahead is essential to avoid crisis, unexpected
Living with a life limiting illness can cause emotional turmoil as those affected struggle with the effects of grief, loss, adjustment and change. Being with and supporting people who are experiencing emotional and spiritual pain forms a large part of the C.N.S. role and this requires skill, sensitivity and compassion. Ongoing support from colleagues coupled with Clinical Supervision is crucial to the maintenance of their personal and professional integrity and this enables them to maintain the highest standard of care for which the Hospice is renowned.

Slightly more than 60 minute makeover... Our charity shop in Lochwinnoch has undergone substantial refurbishment and was recently re-launched with ’60 Minute Makeover’ star John Amabile doing the honours. A fantastic crowd braved the wet weather on Friday 9th July and bagged some great bargains while enjoying a glass of bubbly and some fabulous home baking! To ensure continued success the shop requires a plentiful supply of good quality donations including clothes, bric-a-brac and handbags. So Donate... don’t Dump!

It’s A Knockout – It Certainly Was... This year saw St. Vincent’s Hospice holding their first ever It’s A Knockout event on Saturday 31st July at St. James Playing Fields in Paisley. There were a total of 18 teams taking part in the day over 3 sessions. We had teams from local corporate supporters such as William Tracey Limited, McAlpines, Johnstone Fire Brigade, Morrisons Johnstone and Erskine and teams from the RAH. Teams made up of family and friends of the Hospice also joined in the day. The day was set to be Wet, Wild and Wacky and it certainly lived up to that expectation. The weather was not completely in our favour as there were showers during the day. But this did not seem to dampen the spirits of the competitors who got right into the mood of the day and threw themselves into each and every game. Thanks to everyone who took part and supported our first It’s a Knockout raising over £10,000 for our work.
Next year’s event is already in the diary at Shanks Park Johnstone, Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th May 2011 and it will be bigger and better, and we’re sure it will be wetter and wilder! Teams should be between 6 – 10 players. £10 registration per player with each player aiming to raise a suggested minimum of £50 in sponsorship. On Sunday 28th November, this year’s Light Up A Life service will take place during which our Christmas tree will be illuminated. After this short service hot drinks and homemade mince pies will be served. The lights on the tree will continue to shine throughout the Christmas period.

We invite you to join us to the lighting ceremony in the Hospice courtyard. For your convenience, parking will be available in the grounds of Johnstone High School. All dedications will be entered in the annual Book of Remembrance which will be on display at the Hospice from the end of January.

The Christmas Season is approaching and St Vincent’s Hospice is already preparing for this year’s Christmas Fayre. There will be a variety of stalls to come and browse through including home baking, handbags, fancy goods and a Christmas stall. Santa will also be in attendance at the Grotto for the children.
