commanders T You may not know all of them, but they are the men whose every move affects the telecom industry. They are the men who walk in the industry’s corridors of power, affecting the tech destiny and experience of one of the world’s largest mobile markets. my mobile
They come from different parts of the industry - telecom policy makers, operators, handset manufacturers, VAS operators, mobile accessory manufacturers – but what each of them shares is the ability to influence the Indian (and sometimes even international) mobile world, thanks to their standing and influence. So in keeping with our annual tradition of bringing you up to speed with the powers that be of the Indian telecom, here is My Mobile’s Power List of the eighty people who drive India’s telecom fortunes. OPERATORS æ Sunil Bharti Mittal Chairman, Bharti Group
1
Sunil Bharti Mittal is credited by many for revolutionising the whole industry. Mittal appeared in the telecom industry in 1984 and entered the mobile domain in 1995 by launching Airtel mobile services in New Delhi. His leadership skills sustained the spirits and rejuvenated the company in 2012, when its stocks dipped. Airtel today is one of the leading names in not just the Indian telecom arena but is also making its presence felt in Africa and parts of Asia.
æ Sanjay Kapoor
CEO, Bharti Airtel, India and South Asia
3
Sanjay Kapoor has had a remarkably successful career in the field of telecommunication, and comes with a track record that few CEO’s can match. He joined Bharti Group in 1998 and since then has grown meteorically with the company. It was under Sanjay, the company rolled out 3G services in India and transformed itself from voice driven organisation to a voice and data driven one. As he moves on, his parting shot has been the tariff rationalisation and increase which should ensure the survival of the industry.
æ Marten Pieters CEO, Vodafone Essar

Vodafone has been doing business in India for more than 14 years but the period following the appointment of Marten Pieters as CEO (in 2009) have been some of the most busy ones for the company. Vodafone today commands a significant chunk of subscribers in India, has stepped up its consumer friendliness, and is considered among the top three telecom operators in India in terms of subscriber base. And a lot of this is due to the initiatives of the limelight-shunning Pieters.

And this has helped in catapulting Idea Cellular into the league of India’s top telecom entities. Kapania is responsible for strengthening Idea’s dominance in established service areas, while also launching services in new service areas and expanding brand presence in other major markets in India. His next challenge will be to maintain his creative streak and keep subscribers hooked as competition intensifies.
