newsbits OnePlus files patent for under display selfie cameras
Premium smartphone brand OnePlus has filed a patent for a technology that hides the front camera when not in use, news portal GizmoChina reported recently. The patent seems to be similar to the implementation of the recently-unveiled ‘Concept One’ smartphone by OnePlus that was showcased by the company at CES 2020. As per report, the photograph of the device included in the patent application shows that there are no punchholes of pop-up camera mechanism for the front camera and the entire surface is covered by the screen. Meanwhile, the back of the phone seems similar to the OnePlus 7T. To recall, the Chinese handset maker also introduced the Concept One smartphone at CES 2020 with colourshifting glass technology that makes the rear camera invisible. Apart from this, the company is also working on its upcoming flagship smartphone - OnePlus 8 Pro and it is expected to come with 12GB RAM. New Qualcomm chips aim to connect phones to disparate 5G networks
Qualcomm Inc recently introduced new chips designed to connect mobile phones to 5G networks that operate differently around the world. Qualcomm is the world’s biggest supplier of mobile phone chips. The San Diego, California-based company said its new X60 modem chip, along with a new antenna chip, will be the first to aggregate signals sent over the disparate frequencies used in the two variants of 5G networks, a feature the company said will

help boost download speeds. 5G communications, which are intended to improve data transfer speeds and connect more devices to the internet, are expected to be in wide use by the end of 2020. Qualcomm has said it believes between 175 million and 225 million 5G smartphones will be sold in 2020. In many regions, 5G networks use so-called sub-6 frequencies, but in some major markets such as the United States, the networks will also use “millimeter wave” frequencies to deliver faster data speeds in dense areas such as cities. Xiaomi India elevates Raghu Reddy as its CBO
Xiaomi India has elevated Raghu Reddy as its Chief Business Officer (CBO), Manu Jain, the phone maker’s MD in India, announced in a Facebook post recently. Reddy who has been with the company for over four years was previously heading the smartphone maker’s online sales and categories domain and has now been promoted as the CBO. The CEO attributed the company’s growth in online sales and its reaching a 45% plus market share to Reddy adding that he played a key role in launching multiple new products and categories. “As CBO, in addition to his previous role of heading online sales and categories, he will also take up several additional responsibilities from me. Please join me in congratulating him and wishing him all the best, “ Jain’s Facebook post read. Nokia smartphones now allow Wi-Fi calling on Airtel, Jio
HMD Global, the maker of Nokia phones, has enabled voice over Wi-Fi (Vo Wi-Fi) on its range of Nokia smartphones for Reliance Jio and Airtel users. The Jio and Airtel customers using Nokia 9 PureView, Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 8.1, Nokia 7.1, Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 6.1 Plus and Nokia 6.1 smartphones can use VoWi-Fi service. Nokia 7.2, Nokia 6.2 users, however, can only avail Jio VoWiFi service for now, the company said. Earlier this year, both Jio and Airtel made VoWiFi services available for their respective subscribers across the country. VoWi-Fi addresses problems of insufficient coverage, especially indoors. Analysts are of the view that telcos can attract more subscribers using VoWi-Fi or retain subscribers by offering better indoor calling experience. In addition, they would come up with competitive packages to increase revenue and competitiveness. Panasonic Miraie smart home platform debuts in India
Japanese tech major Panasonic has forayed into Connected Living Solutions with the launch of its IoT & AI enabled platform – Miraie. ‘Mirai’ meaning ‘future’ and ‘ie’ meaning ‘home’ in Japanese, the platform aims to empower everyday lives of consumers with comfort, convenience and seamless connectivity across all Panasonic devices; by updating quality of living spaces basis their need and ambient environment. E-commerce platform Club Factory has surpassed 100 million monthly active users (MAUs) in India following a strong surge in user adoption across the country, it said in a press release recently. Club Factory has witnessed a sharp rise in traffic, clocking in 4x growth in orders received in 2019 on the platform as compared to the previous year, it added. Indian-led team develops software to reduce space taken by smartphone apps
A team led by an Indian-origin scientist has developed a new ‘streaming’ software that can reduce the space taken up by apps on a smartphone by at least 85 per cent. The software “streams” data and code resources to an app from a cloud server when necessary, allowing the app to use only the space it needs on a phone at any given time. “It’s like how Netflix movies aren’t actually stored on a computer. They are streamed to you as you are watching them,” said Saurabh Bagchi, a professor at Purdue University in the US. “Here the application components, like heavy video or graphics or code paths, are streaming instantly despite the errors and slowdowns that are possible on a cellular network,” said Bagchi, an alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. The study shows how the software, called AppStreamer, cuts down storage requirements by at least 85 per cent for popular gaming apps on an Android. hile presenting the Union Budget 2020, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed a new scheme for promoting the manufacturing of mobile phones, electronics and semiconductor packaging in the country. She added that the potential of job creation in this segment is immense. A detailed scheme with details will be released soon. “The electronics manufacturing industry is very competitive and the potential of job creation is immense. India needs to boost domestic manufacturing and attract large investments in the electronics value chain,” Sitharaman said. She further added that the scheme can be adopted for medical devices as well. During her speech in the Parliament, Sitharaman said that under Make in India initiative, well laid out customs duty rates were pre-announced for items like mobile phones, electric vehicles and their components, which has ensured gradual increase in domestic value addition capacity in India. “Customs duty rates are being revised on electric vehicles, and parts of mobiles as part of such carefully conceived Phased Manufacturing Plans,” she added. The government, under the National Policy on Electronics 2019, had set a target of making 100 crore mobile handsets
indigenously by 2025, valued at about Rs 13 lakh crore. It had also set a target to promote domestic manufacturing in the entire value-chain of ESDM (electronic system design and manufacturing) to achieve a turnover of $400 billion (Rs 26 lakh crore) by 2025. The value of electronic equipment manufactured in the country has increased to Rs 4.58 lakh crore in 2018-19, from Rs 1.90 lakh crore in 2014-15. Out of the 100-crore mobile handset manufacturing target, 60 crore units will be for exports valued at about Rs 7 lakh crore. The government has set an ambitious target to increase smartphone exports from the country to $110 billion by 2025 from $3 billion now.n

he increase in the Duty Drawback Cap per unit for mobile phones will help boost exports. The Duty Drawback on Mobile Phones has been increased from Rs 197 to Rs 350. The Department of Revenue has issued notification No. 07/2020 Customs (NT) dated 28th January 2020 stating the Duty Drawback Rate of ‘Cellular Mobile phones with or without accessories’. The Duty Drawback Rate is fixed at 4% with a cap per unit (piece) of
Rs 350. “ICEA has been relentlessly pursuing the Government of India to increase or introduce export benefits for the mobile phone industry. The increase in the Duty Drawback Cap has helped make exports more competitive. The All Industry Rate (AIR) of 4% with a cap of Rs 350 is yet another step forward to build India as a global mobile phone manufacturing destination,” said Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of India Cellular & Electronics Association. ICEA’s objective has always been to improve the ‘Ease of Doing Business’ and lessen the cost burden on the industry to make it more competitive. The NPE, 2019 has a target of exports of 600 million units valued at USD 110 billion for 2025-26. This increase of the duty drawback cap from Rs 197 per unit to Rs 350 per unit will encourage exports of mobile handsets from India and assist in meeting the NPE, 2019 export targets. China’s mobile giants joining forces to take on Google’s Play Store

n a move meant to challenge the dominance of Google’s Play Store, Chinese players Xiaomi, Huawei Technologies, Oppo and Vivo are reportedly joining forces to create a platform for developers outside China to upload apps onto all of their app stores simultaneously. The four companies are ironing out kinks in what is known as the Global Developer Service Alliance (GDSA). The platform aims to make it easier for developers of games, music, movies and other apps to market their apps in overseas markets, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The GDSA was initially aiming to launch in March, as per reports, although it is not clear how that will be affected by the recent coronavirus
outbreak. A prototype website says the platform will initially cover nine “regions” including India, Indonesia and Russia. Google, whose services are banned in China, earned about $8.8 billion globally from the Play Store in 2019, said Katie Williams, an analyst at Sensor Tower. Google also sells content such as movies, books and apps on the Play Store and collects a 30% commission. “By forming this alliance each company will be looking to leverage the others’ advantages in different regions, with Xiaomi’s strong user base in India, Vivo and Oppo in Southeast Asia, and Huawei in Europe,” said Nicole Peng, the VP of Mobility at Canalys. “Secondly, it’s to start to build some more negotiation power against Google,” she added. Together the four companies made up 40.1% of global handset shipments in the fourth quarter of 2019, according to IDC. “The whole concept of STM has been around the protection of the device” What first began as an idea to better transport a laptop over two decades back has now grown into a multimillion dollar business for Ethan Nyholm, the CEO and Cofounder of STM Brands, the parent company of two global brands designing lifestyle accessories for tech devices – STM Goods and Element Case. Based in Sydney (Australia), Ethan has been at the helm of STM for 20 years. Ethan co-founded the company with his business partner Adina Jacobs when he was attending university in Sydney in 1999. Carving out a niche for itself, STM now has offices across three continents and 50 employees. Ethan shares his success story and more, including his business plans in India, in an interaction with Ramesh Kumar Raja. Excerpts: Yours is a very interesting story of turning an idea into a multimillion dollar business. Can you please tell us about your inspiring journey? It started in about 1997 when I bought a laptop and could not find a bag to carry it in between home and university. So, I used a bubble wrap sleeve and placed it in a backpack. That was the germination of the STM Brands. The whole concept of STM from that time has been around the protection of the device from both, knocks and prying eyes as well as the person using the product, in terms of use and comfort. We launched our brand in November 1999 with one laptop style backpack and one sleeve.
