here was a time when we were told "kheloge koodoge banoge kharaab, padhoge likhoge banoge nawab" (play and leap around and you will become bad, read and write and you will become a king). Today, the shoe is very much on the other foot and playing is considered to be good - whether on a console, a playground or on your handset. On the tech side, gaming is a billion dollar business with revenues that rival those coming from Hollywood, and thanks to the smartphone revolution, that has gone really mainstream. Today, you do not need a high end console and a display to enjoy a game with great graphics and sound - just a decent tablet or smartphone would do. And given the rate at which the mercury is soaring in India, playing a game on your handset or tablet is a much safer option than doing so in an open field. Which is why our cover feature this time focuses on the best games across the most popular mobile platforms - no matter which smartphone you use, you will find something to download and enjoy here. A warning: addiction is likely! If only tech life were all fun and games. Of course, there are other issues that keep coming up and as always, we have done our best to cover them in our pages. With different brands offering EMI schemes to purchase their handsets, we have taken a closer look at the pros and cons of what is being handed to consumers. We have also cast an eye on tariff differences. And while the cover story is all about gaming, we also have on board a feature that tells you the different uses to which you can put your trusty tablet - a few surprises for you there, take my word for it. Garnishing all these are our regular bevy of features - we have interviews with key members of the industry, app and game reviews, and a look at interesting devices that have arrived - and are primed to arrive - in the Indian market. Of course, I have saved the best for last - the burn tests. The smartphone wars are truly set to erupt in India with every brand coming out with its flagship (check our last issue's cover story) and this time we take a close look at the Samsung Galaxy S4, the device that many feel will set the benchmark for smartphones this year. We also put the Sony Xperia ZL, the Alcatel One Touch Idol (the Iron Man phone) and Asus's FonePad (a seven inch tablet designed for calling), and a number of other devices through their paces. Turn the pages to find out just how well - or badly - they fared. I like My Mobile magazine because of the hordes of information it covers in it. Most of the technical terms are difficult to understand and your Jargon Buster section helps the reader to understand the technical jargon. The varied terms covered were very interesting and the ample information about each enlightens the reader about them. But what did happen was no less momentous. For, in a very bold strategy, Facebook decided to make not just one phone, but EVERY Android phone a Facebook phone. And making this possible was a new software called Home.

Home, actually, is a skin or a theme intended for most Android devices. And its aim is simple: to give your Android device a total Facebook makeover. We managed to get our hands on a leaked version of Home well before its release and it literally took over the interface of our Nexus 7. Instead of the normal lockscreen, your Android device running Home will now show you a Facebook-oriented lockscreen, with your FB profile picture in a small circle in the middle, which can be pulled to either access the applications, the camera or your Facebook page, directly from the lockscreen itself. And in the background will be a large image or post made by one of your friends. In fact, hitting the home button on your device will display a series of posts by your friends, one at a time, all with rich graphical content. Notifications appear in the form of tiles,

which you can tap on to open or just swipe away to ignore. You can also use Facebook chat while using any app, using the Chat Heads and Messenger service, which pretty much makes Facebook chat very much like a BBM or iMessage service in terms of ease of use and access. But what of the apps that already exist on your device? Well, you can place the ones that you prefer using the most in a special launcher, and the others will be displayed in a regular list. Of course, these are just the tip of what is likely to be a very large Facebook iceberg. Evidently, Home will be updated with new features and functions every month, to the extent that there will literally be a bit of Facebook in everything you do from your Android handset. The app itself is initially going to be available for a total of six handsets (the HTC One, HTC One X, HTC One X+, Samsung Galaxy S IV, Samsung Galaxy S III and Samsung Galaxy Note 2) from April 12 onwards on Google Play in the US and will gradually make its way to other devices and nations. Consumers will also have the option to grab an HTC First handset, which will be the first phone to come with Home as well as Instagram pre-loaded on to it. Once again, availability of this dual core processor driven handset will be restricted to a few nations.

But will people move in?

So are we headed for a Facebook Home era on Android? While Facebook addicts might think so, tech experts have been less optimistic. Many have pointed out that most major Android manufacturers like Samsung, HTC, LG and Sony come with their own customised skins and themes, which users have got accustomed to. Would they take kindly to having yet another skin placed over it? A lot of people have also expressed concern that while they do use Facebook, it is by no means the only social network they log on to – and Home definitely does not treat other social networks (Google Plus, Flickr, etc.) as kindly as it does Facebook. Then there is the matter of control and privacy. There is a stream of thought that believes that Home will give Facebook access to all the information one has on one’s device, which is not a good thing for those who value their privacy. Round that off with the fact that the app seems to be both a RAM and bandwidth guzzler, thanks to its penchant for displaying high-resolution images, and you can see why not everyone is cheering Home on. Facebook’s Home initiative in fact could work both ways. It could lead to a whole new way of using Android devices if it proves popular. However, if it does not, it could ironically fragment the whole Facebook

experience. After all, people using Home on their device would get a very different experience from those using conventional Facebook apps. There is also the little matter of other platforms. While our sources inform us that a Home app for BlackBerry 10’s platform is a distinct possibility, the chances of its coming to iOS and Windows Phone 8, both of which do not allow users to change the basic homescreen interface, are very remote indeed. In simple terms, Facebook Home could result in a fragmented Facebook community in terms of experience. As one cynical user put it, “Uptil now, we used to wonder when we would get the latest version of Android on our handsets. Now we will also have to see if it supports Home and which version of it!” Of course, on the flip side, if it does actually take off, it could be a shot in the arm for Android, lifting it well and truly clear of the competition. Whatever happens, what cannot be denied is that from April 12 onwards, the world’s most famous social network will have a new Home on Android. Literally. What is going to matter is just how many people choose to stay in it. And for how long. If people prefer staying out, it might lead to that Facebook phone people were talking about, after all. 

However, the idea of virtual cloud storage is still not popular among users due to lack of awareness about the concept. NEWS bits HANDSETS & MORE Micromax rolls out 3D smartphone for Rs 9,999 Following the success of the Canvas HD, Micromax has launched its first 3D smartphone, the Canvas 3D-A115 in India. Graced with good looks, the new 3D smartphone lets users view 3D content without 3D glasses and comes at an appealing price as well. The Canvas 3D-A115 comes with a 5-inch 3D capacitive touchscreen of 480x800 pixels resolution. It is a dual SIM phone and runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system. The device is powered by a 1.2 GHz dual core processor with MediaTek MTK6577 chipset. The device offers 512MB RAM and 4GB internal memory which can be further expanded up to 32GB via microSD card. It boasts a 5.0-megapixel rear camera with autofocus and LED flash and a VGA front camera for video calling. The smartphone offers connectivity options like Wi-Fi, GPRS, EDGE and Bluetooth. The most interesting part of the phone, however is its price - it is available for just Rs 9,999.

Idea launches Android Aurus Idea Cellular launched another Android based smartphone, the Aurus 2, its first Jelly Bean based device. The Aurus 2 is Idea’s fifth smartphone running the Android operating system. Idea Aurus 2 sports a 3.5-inch display with 320 x 480 pixel resolution and is powered by a 1GHz processor. On the memory front, the device comes with 4GB internal memory with 512MB RAM. The smartphone boasts of a 3.2-megapixel camera with digital zoom along with a front facing VGA camera and supports video calling. Idea’s new dual-SIM Aurus 2 comes packed with a data usage offer for Idea 3G users. For a pack of Rs. 261, Aurus 2 users can get 1.6GB of 3G data and Idea TV subscription free for the first three months of usage. The new 3G smartphone from the company is available at all major mobile retail stores and Idea outlets across the country.

Intex unveils iBuddy Connect 3G tablet with Educlass Intex has launched the new iBuddy Connect 3G tablet with Educlass, an app that includes pre-loaded NCERT text books from class 1 to 12 and a repository of question banks. Intex iBuddy Connect 3G, as the name suggests is a 3G CDMA tablet with an extra slot for 2G GSM connectivity. In addition it has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB and HDMI ports. For a device to handle so many tasks the components have to be robust enoug. This reflects in the iBuddy Connect 3G tab’s configuration, which includes a 1GHz dual core processor and 1GB RAM. Spice rolls out dual core Smart Flo Pace 2 Mi-502 mobile Spice has launched a dual core smartphone Smart Flo Pace 2 Mi-502. It is not just a dual core smartphone but is also a dual SIM and dual camera smartphone. It features a wide 5-inch display, Android 4.0 as OS and a slim body with 9.6mm depth. It has a long lasting 2,100mAh battery, 512MB RAM, 32GB external and 4GB internal memory. It has a 0.3MP front camera and a 5MP rear camera. Policy & Regulations TRAI: UP, TN ahead of other states in mobile subscriptions According to a report from the TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India), Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the leading mobile user of the country. The largest state in India in terms of population, UP has 121.60 million mobile subscribers. Tamil Nadu with 71.81 million subscriptions is at the second position followed by Maharashtra (67.73 million), Andhra Pradesh (64.12 million) and Bihar (60.73 million). Together these five states account for 45 per cent of India’s 861.66 million mobile phone users. The report further states that India comes second in terms of mobile subscriptions after China. The overall subscription figure saw a slight dip of 0.11 per cent in February, when it fell from January’s 862.6 million subscriptions to the current figure of 861.66 million.

Vodafone numero uno in rural India, says COAI According to a Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) report, telecom giant Vodafone has replaced Bharti Airtel as the foremost GSM service provider in rural India. Vodafone’s subscriber base in rural areas has grown by 4.9 million in the first quarter and currently stands at 82.24 million. Bharti Airtel, despite coming second with 82.16 million rural subscribers, is still the leading telecom operator in terms of overall subscription base, which stands at 188.20 million, as per the COAI report released on 31 March, 2013. The same report puts Vodafone’s pan-India subscription number at 152.35 million. Vodafone claims that its popularity in rural areas grew after they decided to involve Gram Panchayats to reach out to the rural population.

TTSL ask DoT for 120 days to surrender additional spectrum

In order to protest against the Government’s decision of charging a one-time fee on airwaves, Tata Teleservices has decided to surrender excess CDMA spectrum beyond 2.5 MHz in 13 circles. Last year, the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) recommended that the incumbent operators would be charged with one-time spectrum fee. Other Indian operators (Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular and Reliance) have received similar notices from DoT for holding extra spectrum. TTSL in a letter to DoT has asked for a period of 120 days to surrender the spectrum. A sum of Rs. 1152.7 crore was charged as a one-time fee. The company will keep only 1.25 MHz more in the circles of Delhi and Mumbai. The company offers high speed Internet services using the CDMA spectrum under the brand name of Tata Photon.

Telecom operator Aircel has launched a unique retail initiative called ‘Aircel Sewa Kendras’ (ASK). These exclusive shops are opened with an aim to be in close contact with the subscribers and to help in resolving their queries. The telco wants to redefine customer experience by providing everything under one roof. In the starting phase, 14 such ASKs have been established at important locations in Mumbai. Apart from sales and service centers the shops will also be selling Aircel postpaid, prepaid, data and VAS products. A customer will be able to do everything from testing various device features to getting customised plans and bundled schemes to experiencing data services and speed. Along with all these, the ASKs will also facilitate regular needs like bill payment, SIM exchange, plan change, etc., all with a view to offer a quick resolution to customers.

Reliance Communications hikes mobile call rates Reliance Communications has announced an increase in its mobile call rates by up to 30 per cent and a cut in promotional offers and discounts by 65 per cent. The new rates are expected to bring better RPMs (revenue per minute) and profitability to the operator. The call rate for voice calls which was 1 paisa/second earlier will now be 1.2 paisa/second. Gurdeep Singh, Head Mobile Business, Reliance Communications said, “With smaller operators shutting down or scaling down their operations and easing off hyper-competitive pressures, this will help pricing power move back and positively impact profitability,” With several operators already shutting shop, bigger players like Bharati Airtel, Vodafone and Idea have already slashed discounts on voice calls to overcome rising airwave costs.

Reliance launches ‘Reliance Twitter Access Plan’ Reliance Communications has joined hands with Twitter to launch a bundled prepaid plan called the ‘Reliance Twitter Access plan’ for all its GSM subscribers. Through this partnership, Reliance Communications becomes the first telecom operator in the country to partner Twitter in India. ‘Reliance Twitter Access Plan’ is a promotional offer for a period of 90 days. During this all new Reliance GSM prepaid subscribers will get unlimited Twitter access without paying any extra data consumption charges. Subscribers may connect to “Twitter Access” by simply visiting twitter.com or by going to mobile. twitter.com on their Reliance prepaid mobile device.

They will provide Disney UTV’s content pertaining to movies, television and Hollywood. The apps crossed the 15 million download mark even in the test phase and 2.5 million Nokia devices also comes with pre-loaded UTV apps. These apps also allow the user to access video streaming on the go even with low bandwidth and GPRS networks. The UTV app will keep users up to date with new movie trailers and will also provide full length Bollywood and regional films along with the gossip going on in the entertainment industry. G Electronics seems to be taking a leaf out of Nokiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book and is trying to capture the populous mid-range smartphone market in India. The company now has introduced the LG Optimus L7 II Dual, which it claims delivers great features for customers who want performance as well as value for money. As the name suggests it is a dual-SIM phone. It comes with a 4.3-inch IPS capacitive display of 480 x 800 pixels resolution, and runs on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean operating system. Powering the device is a 1GHz dual core Cortex A5 processor with a Qualcomm MSM8225 Snapdragon chipset and Adreno 305 GPU. The smartphone also comes equipped with 768MB RAM and 4GB internal memory which can be further expanded to 64GB via microSD card. The device boasts an 8.0-megapixel autofocus rear shooter with LED flash accompanied by a secondary VGA camera for video calling. The connectivity attributes of the device include Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi (with Wi-Fi Direct), 3G, GPS and GPRS. The device also has some pre-loaded apps like Google Search, Maps, Gmail, GTalk, and YouTube. It comes with a 2,460 mAh battery, and is available in two colour options: black and white. atawind, the company that introduced low-cost Aakash tablet in India has unveiled a new tablet, the UbiSlate 7C+. The tablet has a 7-inch multi-touch capacitive display of 800x480 pixel resolution and runs on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich OS. It is powered by a 1 GHz Cortex A8 processor, and unlike the Aakash tablet range which had only Wi-Fi connectivity, this one comes with a SIM card slot and has calling facility. On the memory front the device comes with 512MB RAM and 4GB internal memory which can be further expanded to 32GB through a microSD card. The tablet also has a VGA front facing camera to facilitate video calling, and comes with connectivity options like Wi-Fi, 3G dongle support and EDGE. The tablet also comes pre-loaded with CBSE curriculum, online tutoring, and an Electronic Assessment engine for competitive exams in India which includes a free 1 month trial for every student. The device also comes with Office applications, and apps for Diesel Book Store and My Jobs. The UbiSlate 7C+ could well become the Aakash 3 tablet, but as of now is being sold commercially for Rs 4,999. n

On the connectivity front, the device offers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G, NFC, HDMI, and GPS. It will also come preloaded with apps like BlackBerry Maps, Photo Viewer, and of course, the legendary BlackBerry Messenger (BBM). The device will be available in two colour variants: Black and White. It might seem expensive, but take our word for it - the intriguing game play and superb graphics make up for it. You play John Slade, a bounty hunter on a mission to hunt down Dr Simon, the leader of a mutant army and cyborgs. The game gets off to a slow start but picks up speed once you get better weaponry to take down swarms of mutants.

This is a must play game on BB Z10, but keep in mind the game file is almost 2 GB in size, so do make sure you have enough space on the phone.

Another great game is being given for free to BB10 users. Asphalt 7 is not your usual racing SIM. Along with the latest cars from makers like Ford, Ferrari, and Audi, you also get a number of power ups and upgrades. The aim of the game is simple: win races to unlock upgrades and tracks. The graphics are very good for a mobile game and there is a multiplayer mode as well, which will keep you occupied for hours after the single play missions are over.

This is a terrific time waster from Yamago studios - an endless snowboarding game where you have to perform stunts in the air. The 2D graphics are very good and your character, a cool cat, has some really neat expressions. With each stunt performed and executed well, you get a time boost. Earn game money and you can equip your bird better, and reach new heights.

Here is an outer space shooter that is really good. It is a shoot-em-up fixture where you need to steer your spaceship through hordes of enemies shooting at you constantly. You get a number of power ups in the form of guided missiles, lasers and more. You need to collect space stars in order to upgrade your machinery. Remember this game is no easy ride - be prepared for some heavy fire from the AI.

He bought it through the EMI facility on his credit card, which is now available on a number of high-end smartphones offered in the Indian market. As smartphone prices have increased dramatically at the higher end, many manufacturers and distributors have developed strategies to ease the purchasing process for consumers. One of the most popular of these is the EMI facility, which actually breaks down the price into affordable segments or instalments.

What is EMI?

EMI, or ‘Equated Monthly Instalment’, is a fixed payment amount made by a borrower to a lender at a specified date of each calendar month. Equated monthly instalments are used to pay both interest and principal each month, so that over a specified number of years, the loan is paid off in full.’ Generally, EMI options on credit cards carry an interest rate which is often lower than the normal interest rate on the credit card. Basically, the EMI is made up of two variable componentsprincipal amount and interest rate. The EMI attraction

It might not be available to everyone, but what cannot be doubted is that EMI schemes have made high-end handsets more accessible. Our sources say that the sales of the iPhone 4 increased significantly following the introduction of EMI scheme. Now anyone can own an Apple iPhone 4 that costs Rs 26,500, but is available for a down payment of Rs 9,990 with zero per cent interest of Rs 2,300 up to 12 months. Likewise, the iPhone 5 priced at Rs 45,500 is available for Rs 3,000 a month with EMI at zero per cent interest rate. Samsung first experimented with the EMI schemes last year when the company launched a campaign for its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy SIII. Back in my college days, I used to spend much of my limited allowance quickly. And I’ve seen budget is a big issue with many working professionals too. The Daily Expense Manager is a simple and straightforward app which helps you to keep a check on your spending, gives you your financial reports and also lets you set reminders for bills, etc. We already have come close to million downloads on the Android market and we have Blackberry and Windows mobile editions already under development. person looking for a dual SIM phone today has literally an ocean of options to choose from. An exception to this dreary rule is Gionee’s GPad G1. Although a newcomer in the Indian market Gionee has made its presence felt, but does it do enough with its latest GPad G1 to lure consumers?

The Gionee GPad G1 has relatively standard phablet looks. It comes with a textured back, while the front is dominated by a 5.0-inch display. Below the screen is a physical home key along with settings and back soft keys. The front camera sits on the top right side. Its metal borders give it solidity and definitely add some class (and weight) to its appearance. The top houses the charging slot while bottom houses the 3.5mm audio jack. The right side holds the power on/off key and the left side houses the volume rocker keys. On the back, one can find the 8.0-megapixel auto-focus camera accompanied by a flash. Overall, its looks are definitely on the decent side.

The front has a 7.0-inch display with 800x480 resolution with a VGA camera on top of the screen and a physical key for home while the back has a speaker grille and a 2.0-megapixel camera. The right side has ports that include an audio jack, charging slot, microSD card, mini USB and a SIM slot. All in all, the Simmtronics XPAD X722 looks average and will not turn heads, but then one would not really expect that in an entry level tablet.

fter carving a space for itself in the value for money phone segment, Fly is now attempting to replicate the same in the tablet segment. But will the F8s succeed against some very stiff competition.

Looks: Light and stylish It is impossible to talk about the appearance of the Fly F8s and not mention the striking resemblance it bears to the Apple iPad Mini. The F8s comes with an 8-inch IPS display, and a very impressive profile to go with it. It is a little wider than the iPad Mini and does not fit in one hand. It is made of plastic, is compact and weighs only 385g, which is relatively light for an 8 inch tablet. It is curved on the edges, is white in color and has a zigzag matte design on the back. The zigzag design gives it a good grip and soft feel but also makes it vulnerable to dirt and dust. But, if you add a flip cover to it, you can avoid that easily. With just the touchscreen and a 2MP camera, the front panel looks neat. Interestingly there is a back button on the side panel, adjacent to the volume and start button. Other features on the back panel include dual speakers, side by side slots for SIM and microSD, a micro USB port and a 3.5mm jack.

Hardware: Fast and smooth Under a good-looking exterior, the Fly F8s houses some very robust hardware. With a 1.2 GHz dual core CPU and 1GB RAM, you can expect the tablet to handle HD movies and games well. The 8-inch LCD screen uses an IPS panel, and has a screen resolution of 720p, so watching films and videos online or directly was a rewarding experience. The touch experience is quite good too. Both its cameras (3.2-megapixel on the rear and 2.0-megapixel on the front) are ordinary and that reflects in its slightly blurry images and videos. Its storage capacity is decent and standard - almost all tablets have 4GB internal and 32GB expandable memory nowadays. With both 3G SIM connectivity and Wi-Fi available, you will not have to worry about Internet connectivity.

sus has a reputation for innovative form factors when it comes to tablets (remember the Transformer and PadFone) and it now comes with a tablet that has been designed for being handled as a phone as well. But exactly how well does the FonePad handle these two very different functions?

Looks: Decent enough The FonePad is built along the lines of Asus’ own MemoPad. The front is dominated by a

7-inch display, with four touch keys for navigation below it (a change from the three we see in most tablets of this size). It is a glossy screen and therefore will attract more than a fair share of fingerprints - we would recommend carrying a cloth to keep cleaning it. The volume and power rocker buttons are on the left, which will inconvenience right-handers, while the right is totally bare. The back has a brushed aluminum finish and looks classy, with a section at the top that can be removed to access the microSIM and microSD card slots. Lodged in the back is also a 3.15-megapixel autofocus camera. At slightly over 10mm, it is not the thinnest tablet we have seen but is comfortable enough to hold. All in all, the FonePad looks smart and solid. It won’t turn heads, but those that look at it won’t turn away either.

In terms of tech specs, the Asus FonePad packs a very decent punch indeed. The 7-inch display comes with a resolution of 1280 x 800 and a pixel density of 216 ppi, which is very decent in a device of this display size. Also on board is an Intel Atom Z2420 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz, 1GB RAM and 8GB storage (expandable using a memory card). Some might quibble about the processor being a single core affair but from our experience of the Intel-driven Xolo devices, these are more than capable of delivering blazing speeds. There are two cameras - a 3.15 megapixel one on the back and a 1.2-megapixel one in front. And well, as this tablet comes with the “Fone” word, it also has 3G connectivity on board, along with dual microphones for noise cancellations for those moments when you want to use the tablet as a phone, although you can also use a Bluetooth headset. Other connectivity options include Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

When it comes to multimedia, the tablet scores with its brilliant display which is the best we have seen on an 7-inch tablet this side of the Nexus. Videos and games look delightful on it. Sound quality was very decent both while playing music and while taking calls - yes, the noise cancellation actually works in call mode. The 3.15-megapixel camera takes decent rather than exceptional shots - good enough for social networks, but not really print-worthy.

The FonePad runs on Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) and if we are to believe the manufacturers is shortly to get an update to Android 4.2. Of course, it comes with the usual Google app goodies on board ranging from Search to Mail to Maps. Asus has also thrown its skin over the basic interface, letting you create up to seven home screens with widgets and app short cuts. Asus has also brought the Floating Apps interface to the tablet, letting you access a certain applications from just about anywhere (hence the term “floating”). Very very handy for the multi-tasking types. Also on board is the App Locker which lets you password protect your files and other documents, and a few more handy apps besides this one.

Performance: Very sound Yes, it is not easy to hold it in one hand and make long phone calls, but we were general impressed by the performance of the FonePad. As a tablet, it worked very well and ran extremely smoothly, whether we were browsing the Web, checking Facebook or playing Shadowgun. Battery life was very impressive too and the closest thing we have seen to iPad

Apart from this, the interface is more or less the same as seen in any Jelly Bean smartphone. Like all Android devices, this one too comes with strong SNS integration. A number of apps come pre-loaded on the phone including the likes of One Touch cloud back-up, Evernote, Barcode scanner, IDEA TV, Viber, WhatsApp and Little Big City.

Of course, you will need an expansion jacket to make the most of this tablet, which adds to both its cost as well as its portability. Multimedia: A good snapper This phone has one of the best cameras that we have seen. The images are crisp and have vivid colours, although we did see some clarity being lost in macro shots. Various shooting modes have been added to the camera and a new menu system has been put in place as well. The phone can run HD movies without any hiccoughs. The screen does perfect justice to HD content, with colours being rendered brilliantly.

The looks of the Samsung S4 are so similar to its predecessor that when we opened the box, we thought for a moment that we had been given the SIII by mistake. A closer look reveals subtle differences. For instance, the S4 is slimmer than the SIII. The camera and flash placement have been changed too, with the flash below the camera. The S4 also feels much lighter to hold. The phone comes with a 5-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen of full HD resolution. Below the screen, users get a hard press home key with feather touch back and option buttons on its sides. The front also has a sensor and front camera next to the speaker grille on top. In an age where some companies are going with metal bodies, Samsung has gone with a polycarbonate one. It does make the phone light, but takes away the edge a metal body carries. As in the SIII, users will find a chrome trim running along the sides of this phone, with the power and volume keys on the sides. An IR emitter has been added to this phone on the top, where the audio port is placed.

Hardware: Twice quad core Under the hood is where the S4 differs most from the SIII. Samsung has introduced the EXYNOS 5 chipset in this phone which can hold 2 quad core processors. There is a Snapdragon version of this phone as well but that is available in limited markets. Users in India are getting the dual quad core version. The first Cortex A7 quad core has 1.2 GHz clock speed and the other Cortex A15 has 1.6 GHz clock speed. This actually improves battery performance, as for the regular functions, the phone uses the 1.2 GHz one, with the more powerful one kicking in for graphic hungry games and high end applications. The phone also has 2GB RAM and a PowerVR SGX 544MP3 graphics processor. India is getting just one version when it comes to storage, the 16GB one. However users can add upto 64GB of

Looks: Worthy enough The Lumia range of smartphones have always been a colourful range and the 520 follows this trend. In spite of packing in a 4-inch display, it is surprisingly compact, a very reasonable 9.9

The 4-inch display is of 800x480 resolution and making sure Windows Phone 8 runs smoothly is a 1GHz dual core processor, backed up by 512MB RAM. Onboard storage stands at 8GB, which can be expanded using a microSD card, and when it comes to connectivity, you have 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS, although there’s no NFC (not a deal-breaker at this price). Multimedia: Not the greatest of the lot

You can see where corners have been cut in the Lumia 520 when you get it into multimedia mode. Although games and videos play smoothly enough, the slightly dull screen means your experience is not the greatest, especially if you are viewing the phone in bright sunlight. Then there is the matter of the camera, which is good enough in bright light conditions but very ordinary when things get dim, be it in still or video mode. The digital lenses help to an extent, but not always, so you will end up images that are social network worthy but not quite print quality. Sound quality is loud enough but nothing to rave about really, be it on the loudspeaker or the bundled headphones.

For a phone that costs less than Rs 10,000, the Lumia 520 turns in a very good performance indeed. As long as you do not get too mired in navigation or try to run heavy graphic games, the phone performs with admirable smoothness. Explorer and a mobile version of Microsoft’s MS Office suite. The People app will get you updates from your contact’s social networks. And of course, this being a Lumia, there are some apps from Nokia too, including maps and music, as well as a number of digital lenses to add effects to pictures (a muchneeded feature, when you consider that the camera onboard is not the greatest) . Not bad at all. For the price. And of course, if you need any extra apps, there is the Windows Store to head to - it may not have quite as many apps as Android or iOS, but is getting better with every passing day.

Well, while the Windows Store might not be in a position to challenge that of iOS or Android, it certainly is getting some very good apps as time passes. And Fuse is one of these. Basically a news reader, Fuse lets you pick and choose the sources from which you want news and updates and then serves them up in an interface which is reminiscent of the Pulse news reading app for iOS and Android - each source of news is given a separate row, with boxes containing different news items. So when you

access the app, you basically see rows of boxes with images and some introductory text. You can flick through each row to view different news items, which revolves like a horizontal wheel. Tap on a box and you are taken to the complete news item, within the app itself. You also have the option to download a news item, open it in the default Internet Explorer browser and of course, share it across your social networks. e have seen virtual assistants around for a while. The likes of Siri, Iris, S Voice and a number of others scurry around and dig out information whenever you ask them to. But imagine a service that gives you information without your having to invoke it? That's right, what if you could get information you need by just looking at an app and not even having to enter a search term or press an icon? Well, Google Now attempts to do just that. It accesses the information you have entered in different places, from mail, to maps to calendar and based on that generates cards that contain information that it considers relevant to you. Google Now is a feature that comes within your standard Google Search app for Android and iOS devices. All you have to do is activate it and enter some relevant information - for instance if you are seeking information about sports, you will have to tell the app which teams you follow (ditto about stocks if you want share market updates). Once that is done, all that you need to do is open the Google Search app to see a pile of cards neatly stacked at the bottom of the screen. Touch them and they will pop up with information like how far you are from home or your place of work, changes in the prices of the stocks you are following or how distant your next meeting is. It is all pretty magical and the more you use it, the smarter it gets. Yes, it is not always a hundred per cent accurate and can drain the battery a bit but more often than not, gives you information that helps. Without your having to ask for it. n

omb Raider delivers very good graphics and a stunning story - the tale of how a “normal” young lady became one of gaming’s most famous heroines, Lara Croft. The plot begins on an island off the coast of Japan, where Lara’s ship has broken into two pieces. In this ordeal, she gets separated from the rest of her group. The Island has witnessed destruction in the World War and is home to crashed planes and a Japanese legacy. That is not all - there is a hidden treasure on this island and the local inhabitants are not friendly. In fact, most of them will try to kill you at first sight. You need to make your way past various ledges, plane drops and elevators, at times scaling large rocks to get to your friends. The story has many a twist, at times with great cut-scenes. The game is a third person adventure shooter and we had a great time playing Miss Croft, even though the game did at times remind us of Uncharted: Drake’s Deception. Playing Lara Croft is easy and the learning curve is small enough. You start with mediocre yet deadly weapons like the trusted bow and arrow, and eventually find guns

and grenades to bring down your enemies swiftly. The AI is quite intelligent and will come for you and attempt to flush you out from your hiding spot by throwing grenades or Molotov cocktails. The problem with most styluses however, is that they tend to be small and not too sensitive - one generally has no option but to use snub-nosed styluses on capacitive touchscreens. Which is why we must confess to being impressed by 3M’s Smart Pen. Priced at Rs 999, the Smart Pen comes with a sturdy metal body and is actually as long as a normal ball point pen, which makes it both easy to grip as well as stick into one’s pocket (it has a proper pen-like clip for the purpose as well). Unlike some other stylus manufacturers, 3M has not come out with any specialised software for the stylus, which is good in a way (as it makes one use it across one’s normal apps) and bad in another (there’s no app that showcases it at its best). By and large, we found the stylus doing very well on both the iPad as well as Android tablets - it was snub-nosed but worked smoothly. We just wish that they had bundled a few more tips in the package as they do tend to get damaged - but that’s a complaint we have with most stylus manufacturers. “We expect Indian participation to be positive” She is one of the key figures behind Asia’s largest integrated ICT event, CommunicAsia. We caught up with Agnes Leung, Assistant Project Director (Communications Events), SES, to find out more about the challenges associated with an event of this scale Sulabh Puri Tell us a bit about CommunicAsia. CommunicAsia and EnterpriseIT are Asia’s largest and most established information and communications technology (ICT) events that showcase the latest technologies and trends across the entire communications ecosystem. This year, the shows have evolved and are more relevant than ever. With a special emphasis on the latest developments and insights across the entire ICT value chain, the shows will feature a complete range of key technologies such as mobile broadband and applications, developments in LTE/4G as well as Overthe-Top (OTT) and more. CommunicAsia, EnterpriseIT and BroadcastAsia together attracted more than 50,000 attendees in 2012. Close to 2,000 exhibitors participated in the event last year. Any Indian players to look out for this year? We expect Indian participation to be positive as India’s participation in the event has been very good. We saw 71 exhibitors and over 1,400 attendees from India last year. Currently, we have 15 companies in the India Pavilion and we expect more individual exhibitors to join. TEPC will be leading a group of new and returning exhibitors including Indusnet Technologies, Junotele Software, Neosoft Technologies and Telimart Systems. Tata Communications is also returning to participate. Who are the key speakers to look out for at the event? This year, there will be two Visionary Address speakers. The first is the Governmental Visionary Address by the Minister for Technology, State Government of Victoria, Australia, The Hon. Gordon

Titled “ICT enabled Government – a new approach to buying and using ICT from Victoria, Australia”, the Governmental Visionary Address will discuss how the Victorian Government, through its recently released ICT Strategy, sets out on its roadmap to deliver better services, reduce waste, encourage innovation and improve ICT procurement across government. For the first time, delegates from both the CommunicAsia 2013 Summit and BroadcastAsia 2013 International Conference will be participating in a twopart visionary address on 19 June, 2013. Sulabh Puri Which phone do you use and why? The Samsung Galaxy SIII and the iPhone 5, for their superior technology, brilliant interface and feel good factor. Which features of your phone do you use the most? I LOVE the camera with inbuilt filters on my Samsung Galaxy SIII. I can make my pictures near perfect without always having to use editing software or battling the restrictions of Instagram. I also use the Opera Mini browser extensively because it’s fast and a one-stop shop for everything I need to search for online. According to you, what would be the perfect smartphone? A perfect smartphone would be one with a perfect battery! Currently, none of them have it, so I guess they’re not all that smart after all Which is the gadget you love to lug around. Apart from your mobile phone? I don’t like to carry too many things on me but if I must, it has to be my Canon EOS 600D DSLR camera. Which tech toy would you like to own in the future? I would love to own a high-end gaming system! I have been thinking about it for three years but never got one because I know once it’s in the house, I will never get any work done. What keeps you busy other than your projects and watching TV? Studio sessions, learning music, watching loads of films, YouTube videos and reading, and much, much more. YouTube came into existence on Valentine’s Day in the year 2005 and was created by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim, who were all employees of Paypal.

The inspiration for YouTube as we know it today is believed to have come from two events - Karim’s inability to find online footage of Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction, and the second when both Hurley and Chen were unable to share video footage of a dinner party due to e-mail attachment limitations.

YouTube kicked off as a video dating site dubbed ‘Tune In Hook Up’. However, the founders later decided not to go down that path.

The first video on YouTube is of Jawed Karim talking about elephant’s trunks, titled ‘Me at the Zoo.’ It was shot at the San Diego Zoo.

According to a survey on YouTube, there

are 46,296 videos being viewed all around the world every second, with more than 72 hours of videos being uploaded every minute. n

Google paid $ 1.65 billion to acquire YouTube in November 2006. In retrospect, it looks like a very good deal.

And the images change as does the weather and even the time. Uber cool, we think.

And then adds an interesting spin to it, by accompanying it with not only relevant graphics, but also photographs of the area being covered and also serving up access to live cameras stationed in different parts of the world. You can also check out photographs if you wish. All of which make it a very useful app indeed, albeit a bit of a bandwidth guzzler.

I purchased a Nokia C1–01 recently. I faced some issues related to the handset. I visited a Nokia Care center as my handset was under warranty to get the issue checked. I was informed that it was because of liquid log. They asked for the purchase bill and after cross-checking told me that the warranty period is followed from date of manufacturing and not of sale, and they cannot provide the warranty service according to the purchase bill. As per their advice, I e-mailed Nokia a scanned copy of the purchase bill. After that, I received a reply saying that we are not authorised to update the device warranty as per proof of purchase. I bought a Sony Xperia Tipo phone in January 2013. Initially, the phone had some issues with voice quality coming from the earpiece. When I took my phone to the Sony service centre, they offered me random solutions

Complaint 2 Recently, the telecom operator Aircel started off a new recharge scheme initiative called "Extra Talk Time with CSK". Under this scheme, subscribers would get full talk time on a recharge of Rs. 164. And extra talk time if Chennai Super Kings scored over 164 runs in an IPL match. I recharged my number with RS 164 to leverage the offer. But it was really sad that despite CSK scoring more than 164 twice in the IPL, I never got any extra talk time. In fact, I recharged my number twice with Rs 164 as one of your customer representatives advised me but yet again I never got the extra talk time. When I called customer care they informed me that the offer was valid for the first ten days only. But I have a mail from the Aircel team where nothing of this sort has been written. Complaint 4 I had taken a 3G data card from Airtel in the month of October 2012. Later I placed a request to stop the service and cancel the connection in December. They didn't do this, claiming that my bills had not been cleared. Later, after a lot of argument, I cleared the payment in the month of January as a final settlement. I have the mails as well with me. But surprisingly, the bills have again started to reach my doorstep. And this month, I am again getting recovery calls for Rs 2000. This is very ridiculous. Why should I keep paying for what I am not using? Please look into the matter. -Suraj Airtel’s response Thank you for reaching out to us. We will first check the details and then get back to you.

Complaint 5 that never fixed the real issue. They even updated the phone's OS, claimed to have changed the earpiece of the phone (for which they did not create any job sheet). Finally, when none of these things worked, they told me that the motherboard of this two-month old phone needs to be replaced. The phone was at the service center for another 10-15 days and when they handed me my phone, its panel had numerous scratches and on top of that, the voice problem persisted. The people at service center do not seem to be taking the issue seriously, even after a lot of following

I was using a Nokia Asha 201 and some time ago, I faced some issues in the handset. So, I took it to the nearest Nokia customer care to fix it. They resolved the issue but very shortly I again had some difficulty in the handset. This time when I took the phone to the centre they told me that the phone requires an update. While in the process of update my phone died. Now the customer care people are not ready to resolve or even entertain the issue. Complaint 6 I have been using a postpaid Vodafone number for the last 8-9 years. My usual invoice comes between Rs 150-250 per month. In the month of April, 2013 I received a bill of Rs 2,630. I immediately contacted the local Vodafone customer care to resolve the issue and I was assured that they would look into the matter. But soon I started getting calls for the payment of the due amount. I also got a mail from the company claiming that the amount has been charged due to excessive use of data on my number, which surprised me as I used the data services for only accessing my mails. The amount could not have been this much as I know the tariff rates of the Internet services. I have also written to the Nodal officer of the zone and he has assured a resolution soon. Talk Windows Phone 8 phablet in the works

Although Windows Phone 8 has not exactly set the mobile world on fire since its launch last year, manufacturers are still betting on it. And as per one of the rumours we have heard, the likes of Samsung and HTC are actually looking at the option of making a Windows Phone 8-based 5.5-inch ‘phablet,’ complete with handwriting support and styluses. Evidently the devices are being targeted at enterprises, and will come with no cameras. Digital notepads, anyone?

A social network phone

Imagine a phone with a row of keys dedicated to social networks? Well, we have seen a prototype of the same from a very notable phone manufacturer (no, we cannot name them). A full QWERTY device with a 3.5-inch touchscreen, the device allows users to share content with their favourite social networks and comes with dedicated buttons for Flickr, Google+, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIN, and runs on a very tweaked version of Android, which the manufacturer claims to have developed mainly for the device. autofocus camera, will be its price, which is expected to be sub-Rs 10,000 and its funky design. No, we do not know when it will hit the market but we are hoping it is soon.

Windows and Windows Phone 8...on one device

All right, this one has really grabbed our attention. One of our sources claims that Microsoft is working in close collaboration with a few manufacturers to come out with a hybrid device which can work both as a phone and a tablet. Does not sound special? Well, then consider the fact that it actually uses Windows Phone 8 when in phone mode and Windows 8 when in tablet mode. In essence, this means a user gets the best of both worlds in one device. However, the device will not be a dual booting one - we hear that both OSes will run simultaneously on it, switching as per the user’s need. Honestly, it sounds crazily utopian. Even more honestly, we sure hope it is true and arriving in the market this year.

A Nexus console?

We have seen the Nexus brandname on tablets and phones. And now it seems that we could well be seeing it on a gaming console. If our sources are to be believed and we would not scoff at them, really Google is working on an Apple TV-like box device that can be connected to a larger display. Only the accent is not going to be on getting an Android experience on a larger display, but on gaming in general, and multiplayer gaming in particular. We believe the Nexus Box (as some are referring to it) will come with an octa core graphics processor and will also have special features built in to accommodate multiplayer gaming, like playing a game while on a Google+ Hangout. Yes, we must confess to being more than a little curious.

The iWatch cometh

There have been whispers about it for a while but indications are increasing that Apple might indeed be working on some kind of smart device that can double up as a wristwatch. What, however, is less clear is whether this is going to be a stand-alone device in its own right or an accessory that will work alongside an existing iOS device (like Sony’s Smartwatch). His roots are distinctly humble. His father was a butcher. When Paul was named Intel’s Chief Executive in 2005, he became the company’s first CEO without training as an engineer. How many CEOs exhort their employees to go out and vote? Otellini did in 2008 in a video.

Unlike many CEOs who tend to be diplomatic in matters political, Otellini has been known to speak his mind. In 2010, he discussed how the current administration was failing to create jobs and rescue the U.S. economy.

In an interview, he confessed that he uses a ThinkPad for work and a MacBook Pro for his personal life, including his personal photos and music.

He may be the boss at Intel but Paul is involved in other companies too. He serves on the board of directors of Google and is also on the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.

He has overseen some tumultous times at Intel. In the year 2006, he had to lay-off nearly 10,500 employees which later in 2008 resulted in the company’s downsizing by about 10 per cent.

Since joining Intel in 1974, he has managed several Intel businesses, including the company’s PC and server microprocessor division and the global sales and marketing organization.

Paul Otellini is a California man. He graduated from St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco.

By the time you read this, Otellini would have stepped down as CEO from the company. He announced his retirement a few months ago, ending an association that spanned almost forty years. He will be succeeded by Brian Krzanich.

Is Your Computer Being Held to Ransom?

ith more than half of the Indian population (56%) not recognising the risk of cybercrime or how to protect themselves online, India is a lucrative market for cybercriminals. According to the Norton Cybercrime Report 2012, in India 80 online adults fall prey to cybercrime every minute and a staggering amount of $8 billion has been lost to cybercrime in the past twelve months. While awareness towards spam, phishing, smishing, etc., is increasing, more sophisticated forms of malware are being designed with a stronger agenda to take over identities, information and wealth from not only individuals but also organizations.

This is a PC stick up! Ransomware is a type of malicious software that disables the functionality of a computer and demands a ransom in order to restore the computer to its original state. In other words, it’s a cyber-version of kidnapping for money. The scam has evolved over time, using various techniques to disable a computer. The most recent evolution locks the computer display and does not allow the user to access any programs. The computer then displays a message that claims to be from a branch of local law enforcement. Messages are usually something along the lines of “You have browsed illicit materials and must pay a fine.” Law enforcement logos are used to give the message an air of authenticity. Ransomware is increasingly becoming a global concern as it not only causes financial losses but also takes control of data. While it has been in existence since 2009, it has now become a global problem, spreading first throughout Europe and, in more recent months, has begun targeting users in North America and other markets like India.

Ransomware uses various channels to attack users and not so long back, Skype users in India fell victim to it. With at least 16 different versions of ransomware identified over the past two years, Internet users are more likely to fall prey to it. Interestingly, each version is not an ‘upgrade’ from a previous version, but rather a unique variant, developed by competing criminal gangs. These gangs have independently developed, or bought, their own different versions of ransomware.

Pay-up! With as many as 2.9 per cent of compromised users paying out, expanding into distribution of ransomware is a profitable exercise. More often than not, a lot of individuals do pay up either because they believe the message or because the nature of the message may be

Steps to secure yourself from Ransomware: n Have security software installed and

most importantly up to date with a current subscription. Remember with the thousands of new malware variants running every day, having a set of old virus definitions is almost as bad as having no protection. n Make sure all the software on your system is up to date. This includes the operating system, the browser and all of the plug-ins that a modern browser typically uses. One of the most common infection vectors is a malicious exploit that leverage a software vulnerability. Keeping software up to date helps minimize the likelihood that your system has an exposed vulnerability. n Make sure you are leveraging the full set of protection features delivered in your security product. Symantec and Norton products include five distinct layers of protection: Network (Intrusion Prevention), File (traditional AntiVirus, Reputation (Insight), Behavioral (SONAR) and Repair (ERASER and Norton Power Eraser). embarrassing to some – encouraging them to get rid of it at any cost. An investigation into one of the smaller players in this scam identified 68,000 compromised computers in just one month, which could have resulted in a fraudster obtaining up to $400,000. A larger gang, using malware called Reveton (Trojan. Ransomlock.G), was detected attempting to infect 500,000 computers over a period of 18 days. Given the number of different gangs operating ransomware scams, a conservative estimate is that over five million dollars a year is being extorted from victims. The real number is, however, likely to be much higher.

Better Safe Than Sorry Once hit by ransomware, infected users should not pay the ransom as there is no guarantee that the attackers will unlock the machine after payment. There are steps on the Symantec website to help recover infected machines, but the best defense against this rapidly evolving threat is a good offense.
