STUDENTS FIX STUDENTS’ BIKES In the main campus block, there are more than 120 bicycle parking spots, including 30 general access parking mapped on the left. Only 2 bike repair stand and 1 bike store are located in campus. (The University of Melbourne 2015). It creates a great opportunity for a bicycle repair unit to be designed for students to fix other students’ bikes since the potential site includes bicycle parking lots.

Site Analysis Concept
Significant contrast between enclosed (Sketch #4) and open (Sketch #5) atmosphere between the inside and outside of Asia Centre. Looking at the building from Swanston Street gives the ‘solid’ feeling by large amount of steel cladding and concrete; looking at it from the opposite side gives the ‘clear’ feeling by large amount glass and the reflection of water from the pond outside of it.

8 Tait, Australian furniture design brand, has developed an outdoor kitchen unit which its cover can be converted into roof. The roof can also be elevated to provide more space with external lights and exhaust fan. However, this will take up large amount of space to complete the conversion, therefore this method may not be suitable for my design since space for bike and motorcycle access is essential at the site.
Warendorf, German kitchen manufacturer which is established by Miele & Cie in 1973, designed the “Hidden Kitchen for a modern loft apartment. This can keep the interior of a home clean and simple when the kitchen unit is not used. A 7-meter panel can be folded with a push of a button. Although electrical properties of this design may not be applicable in my own design, however the way of how the wall can be used as cover and shelter by folding it is ideal to keep the repair tools dry and safe.

Instead of designing a shelter as the repair unit, the quantity of surfaces is reduced in order to make the unit more convenient to be convertible and transported. The design basicallty consists of the wall and roof. Various options of how to convert the roof into one piece with the wall are considered.
