Estamos ante nuestro nuevo reto, un reto que nos hemos propuesto todo el equipo de buceadores, que es entregaros una revista el mes que no sale buceadores. Una revista online, interactiva, bilingüe, abierta al mundo, una revista en la que podáis participar, que podáis compartir, que podáis criticar, que podáis enviar a vuestros amigos, a vuestros enemigos, a todo el mundo.

Realmente es nuestro esfuerzo, nuestro amor, todo puesto allí, esperamos que os guste, que nos ayudéis a llevarlo a cabo cada vez mejor.

Y bueno, tenéis el número 0 entre las manos y espero que lo disfrutéis a tope tanto como nosotros hemos disfrutado haciéndolo.

Y yo creo que el futuro está ante nosotros, con nosotros y podemos disfrutar de él todos juntos y por eso…

It truly is our all effort, our love, all set out there, we hope you like it, that you help us bring it out better and better each time.

l archipiélago de las islas Açores está situado en el océano Atlántico a una distancia de 1.815 km del continente europeo y 2.625 km del continente norte americano.

Su localización en la confluencia de las tres placas tectónicas; la americana, la euroasiática y a la africana, le confieren su origen volcánico y su actividad sísmica. Por orden de proximidad respecto a la península ibérica, las islas son: Santa María, São Miguel, Terceira, São Jorge, Pico, Graciosa, Faial, Corvo y Flores, siendo Santa Maria la isla más antigua geológicamente y la primera en ser descubierta. he archipelago of the Azores Islands is situated in the Atlantic Ocean at a distance of 1,815 km from mainland Europe and 2,625 km from the North American continent.

Its location at the convergence of the three tectonic plates, the American, the Eurasian and the African, gives rise to its volcanic origin and seismic activity. In order of proximity to the Iberian Peninsula the islands include, Santa María, São Miguel, Terceira, São Jorge, Pico, the Graciosa, Faial, Corvo and Flores, with Santa Maria being the geologically oldest island and the first to be discovered. La Corriente del Golfo que llega a las Azores transporta aguas cálidas y confluye aquí con las aguas del hemisferio norte que traen muchos nutrientes. Gracias a este fenómeno estas islas tienen una temperatura media anual de 17 ºC, con una oscilación máxima de 8 °C entre el invierno y el verano. La temperatura media del mar está entre los de 19 ºC y los 24-25 ºC en el verano.

Muchas son las especies que pasan por las Azores en busca de alimento y de aguas más cálidas, como las ballenas y los delfines, los tiburones oceánicos, las manta rayas, los grandes bancos de peces pelágicos y las aves marinas, esto hace confluir en el archipiélago especies procedentes de varias partes del mundo.

The Gulf Stream that reaches the Azores transports warm waters and converges here with the waters of the northern hemisphere which bring many nutrients. Thanks to this phenomenon, these islands have an average annual temperature of 17 ° C, with a maximum variance of 8 ° C between winter and summer. características propias que las distinguen a nivel de paisaje y de orografía, olores y colores, historias y tradiciones, sabores y personas, y por supuesto, como no podría ser de otra manera,... los tipos de buceo que se pueden hacer en cada una de ellas.

Las atracciones subacuáticas son muy diversas y van desde el buceo con tiburones azules y manta rayas, a los pequeños caballitos de mar, pasando por los corales de agua fría.

Las inmersiones en picos que se elevan desde una profundidad de 2.000 m hasta llegar a pocas decenas de metros de la superficie, ofrecen gran aventura y adrenalina a los buceadores con más experiencia, que pueden

Aunque la diversidad del buceo en las Azores, no se encuentra únicamente en el encuentro de grandes animales, también se encuentra en los buceos cerca de la costa, donde podremos observar las diferentes formaciones rocosas como resultado de la actividad volcánica de las islas. Éstas forman cañones submarinos, arcos de piedra, e incluso es posible ver la actividad termal bajo el agua en algunas islas y bajos submarinos.

Las rutas de las especies, oro y plata, así como las grandes batallas náuticas, dejaron huella en el fondo del mar de las Azores. Éstas se pueden ver en inmersiones costeras, como por ejemplo en el Parque Arqueológico Subacuático de la isla de Terceira y Dori, un barco de la II Guerra Mundial.

EN ESTAS ISLAS LAS OPORTUNIDADES DE PRACTICAR DEPORTES AL AIRE LIBRE SON INFINITAS.

Además del buceo, todas las islas de las Azores ofrecen otras actividades de naturaleza y aventura que pueden ser disfrutadas entre inmersiones o por los amigos y familiares. Por ejemplo, senderismo, paseos a caballo, visita a las cavidades volcánicas, surf, barranquismo, centros de interpretación ambiental, circuitos culturales y paisajísticos. ¡La cocina tradicional es también algo que no debe dejarse de disfrutar en una visita a las Azores!

The diversity of diving in the Azores is not only found in the rendez-vous between large animals but also in the dives near the coast, where we can observe the different rock formations as a result of the volcanic activity of the islands. These form underwater canyons, stone arches, and it is even possible to see underwater thermal activity on some islands and seabeds.

The gold, silver and spice routes, as well as the great nautical battles, left their mark on the seabed of the Azores. These can be seen in coastal dives, for example in the Underwater Archaeological Park of the island of Terceira and Dori, a ship from the Second World War. In addition to diving, all the Azores islands offer nature and adventure activities that can be enjoyed between dives or by friends and family. These include hiking, horseback riding, visiting the volcanic cavities, surfing, canyoning, environmental interpretation centers, cultural and scenic routes.

Traditional cuisine is also something that should not be missed during a visit to the Azores!

Las Azores han sido reconocidas internacionalmente por su calidad ambiental y como un destino turístico sostenible. En los últimos años, las Azores han sido galardonadas con varios premios por varias entidades internacionales relacionados con el turismo sostenible y la calidad ambiental, como por ejemplo el premio Quality Coast con el que las Azores fueron galardonadas varios años, para recientemente recibir el Platinum Quality Coast.

Con sólo el 5% de la superficie edificada, las Azores ofrecen un entorno natural muy rico.

La vida marina de las Azores incluye delfines, tortugas, aves marinas, peces pelágicos, corales de aguas frías, grandes cachalotes, ballenas de varios tipos entre los que se encuentra el animal más grande de la Tierra, la ballena azul.

Todo esto se puede disfrutar gracias a las actividades turísticas, bien reguladas por leyes regionales tales como el buceo, el snorkel y las salidas de Whale Watching.

La Azores todavía conservan en algunas islas, pequeños parches de bosques de Laurisilva, considerado un fósil viviente de la edad de hielo y que en la actualidad se encuentran protegidos por la ley. With only 5% of the area constructed, the Azores offer a very rich natural environment.

The marine life of the Azores includes dolphins, turtles, seabirds, pelagic fish, cold-water corals, large sperm whales, various types of whales amongst which the largest animal on earth, the blue whale, is found.

All this can be enjoyed thanks to tourist activities such as diving, snorkeling and whale watching, all of which are well regulated by regional laws.

The Azores still conserve small patches of laurel forests on some islands, considered a living fossil from the ice age and currently protected by law.

These and other protected areas of the Azores under regional, national and international legislation are now within a Regional Network of Protected Areas of the Autonomous Region of Azores, which, far from being at a standstill, still continues to improve.

Las islas Azores son también un importante lugar de anidación para las aves marinas y de descanso para las aves migratorias que deben desviarse de sus rutas por causa del mal tiempo. Cada año, el archipiélago recibe cientos de observadores de aves de varios países de Europa, para observar estas aves que ocasionalmente se detienen en las Azores y también para observar las dos especies de aves endémicas de las Azores, el Priolo y el Painho-deMonteiro.

Some of these areas of great environmental and scenic interest can be visited both in the company of expert guides or on one´s own. There are more than 60 hiking routes throughout the nine islands, which grant access to the natural beauty of the Azores. The creation, marking, use and conservation of hiking routes are regulated by regional laws and the marking is in accordance with the international laws of signage for walking trails.

The Azores islands are also an important nesting site for seabirds and resting point for migratory birds that are forced to deviate from their routes due to bad weather. Every year, the archipelago receives hundreds of birdwatchers from several countries in Europe in order to observe the birds that occasionally stop off in the Azores and to also observe the two species of endemic birds of the Azores; Priolo and the Painho-de Monteiro.

nte la enhorabuena por el trabajo realizado durante todos estos años en las exploraciones en Mallorca, Xisco nos respondió: La vida es una acumulación de vivencias, para nosotros descubrir y dar a conocer este mundo es todo un privilegio y un cúmulo de sensaciones que nos quedan marcadas de por vida. ¡Hacemos más grande a Mallorca por debajo!.

Desde bien jovencito comenzó su contacto con las cuevas y la pesca submarina, pero fue a las 18 cuando decidió formarse en la espeleología y a los 32 se introdujo en el espeleobuceo uniendo asi sus dos grandes aficiones las cuevas y el buceo.

Así fue como comenzó un enorme historial de cuevas exploradas en Mallorca, siendo participe de las mayoría de los trabajo de exploración realizados en la isla: “La suma de las galerías subacuáticas descubiertas y topografiadas supera ya los 60 kilómetros y muchos más de 1000 días de trabajos en las cuevas. Entre ellas se encuentran varias de las cavidades litorales de mayor recorrido subacuático de Europa.”

efore all the congratulations for the work conducted in the explorations in Mallorca d ow n t h e y e a r s , X i s c o responded: ¨ Life is an accumulation of experiences, discovering and making this world known is a privilege and a host of feelings that stay with you for life.

What underground spot particularily stands out for you?

Many, so many ... the first explorations in la Cova des Coll de Portocolom were very intense. They were the beginnings, I didn´t sleep the night before because of the exhilaration and excitement I felt.

The discovery of the chamber CincCents de la Cova de Sa Gleda was truly amazing, with the impressive volume displayed.

The discovery of the first underwater phreatic levels in the Cova des Drac de Cala Santanyí was a very special moment for what it represented on a scientific level.

The exploration of the siphon of the Sueños en la Cova den Bassol, after overcoming a cramped strait and being met with the impressive beauty of its columns, stalactites and stalagmites.

Tengo muy claro que todos los proyectos de estudio de cuevas han supuesto retos importantes. Puede que la Cova de sa Piqueta, en la cual se produjo el incidente, sea uno de los retos más difíciles por las grandes dificultades que presenta.

For you, what has been the most significant challenge?

All the cave study projects have presented important challenges but perhaps the Cova de sa Piqueta, in which the incident occurred, would make up one of the greatest challenges due to the huge difficulties presented.

¿Podrías contarnos brevemente qué sucedió?

Al regresar, después de realizar yo la exploración de una galería y mi compañero de topografiar otra, nos reunimos en una zona estrecha.

por los sedimentos y al seguir con el tacto el hilo-guía nos dimos cuenta que la ramificación que se dirigía a la salida se había desprendido por lo que parecía una rotura del anclaje.Estuvimos más de una hora intentando encontrar el cruce de salida sin éxito. Ello condujo a consumir más aire del disponible para regresar.

The water was completely murky due to the sediments and upon following the tact of the guideline we realized that the branch leading to the exit had become detached by what seemed like a breakage in the anchor. We were trying to find the exit for over an hour without success. This led to more air consumed than we had available to get back.

Nunca, en los 24 años de práctica del espeleobuceo me había ocurrido una cosa así. Nos dirigimos a una sala con aire cercana y allí decidimos que mi compañero Guillem saliese a buscar ayuda. Él consume mucho menos y además yo estoy más acostumbrado a respirar aire viciado de las cuevas.

La decisión de quién debía quedarse y quién salir estaba clara.

Never, in my 24 years of cave diving, had something like this ever happened to me. We went to a chamber with closed air and decided that my colleague Guillem would go out and seek help. He consumes much less and I am also more used to breathing stale air from the caves. The decision of who should stay and who should go was clear.

Si él no lo conseguía nadie sabría dónde estaba yo. Empecé a preocuparme por los efectos que el aire cargado de anhídrido carbónico podía ocasionarme.

En la tercera fase empecé a ver que las baterías de las linternas se iban acabando una tras otra y empecé a dudar de si darían conmigo.

Ser espeleólogo y de carácter tranquilo es una gran ayuda, indudablemente.

second, I thought that Guillem hadn´t managed to get out, that he had become disoriented when trying to make a jump that allows you, by making a big detour, to return through other galleries and to avoid the obstacle.

If he couldn´t do it, nobody would know where I was. I began to worry about the effects that the air loaded with carbon dioxide would have on me. In the third phase I began to see the batteries of the flashlight running out one after the other and I began to doubt if they would find me.

Undoubtedly, being a Speleologist and having a calm disposition is an enormous help!

MOMENTOS DIFICILES… Psicológicamente fue muy duro y además tener que respirar en una sala con el aire muy viciado por la falta de oxígeno, el elevado porcentaje de CO2, la falta de alimentación y la lenta pérdida de calor corporal.

DIFFICULT MOMENTS… Psychologically it was very hard in addition to having to breathe in a chamber with very stale air due to the lack of oxygen, the high percentage of CO2, the lack of food and the slow loss of body heat.

That we should be grateful for each moment that life awards us, even if it may not be good. Doing this helps put your problems in perspective and see the things that truly matter. I was also surprised at how much people cared about me and I have to admit, it made me cry. n

Más de uno seguro que se preguntacomo yo - ¿Pero por Dios! Cómo lo logra?

Voy a intentar en esta entrevista que nos des la fórmula, para ver si nos contagiamos de esa chisporrotean energía. ¡Que siempre hace falta!

Háblanos un poco de tus antecedentes o como se dice en inglés ¿cuál es tu background? ¿Qué te llevó a bucear?

Realmente fue una casualidad, yo en mi vida anterior me dedicaba a la Investigación Privada y Dirección de Comercial de Empresas, así como al ramo de la Hostelería por tradición Familiar, un día me sumergí en la Costa Brava en un Lugar emblemático como es Sant Feliu de Guixols y en ese momento me di cuenta que era lo que quería hacer de ahí en adelante en mi vida, tuve la suerte de tener una formación muy Profesional con diferentes Instructores, principalmente Manfred

Tell us a bit about your past, or as we like to say in English; What is your background? What led you to diving?

It really was a coincidence, in my previous life I dedicated myself to Private Investigation and Business Management, as well as to the hospitality industry due to family tradition, one day I went diving in the Costa Brava in the emblematic place of Sant Feliu of Guixols and in that instant I realized that it was what I wanted to do from then on in my life. I was lucky to have very professional training with different instructors, primarily Manfred LET'S DIVE MAG ! ❙ 35

ENTREVISTA INTERVIEW Richter sin olvidar a Frank Wertz los cuales me inculcaron algo muy sencillo que cada día aprendemos cosas y normalmente más de las personas que comenten errores que al revés. ¿Por qué quisiste especializarte en la enseñanza, ya que ahora trabajas para SSI, si es que fue algo que escogiste?

Escogí esta Profesión del Buceo porque amo la Naturaleza en General y al mismo tiempo la Enseñanza, la comunicación y la pasión. El Buceo me daba la posibilidad de afrontar todos estos retos y cada día estoy más contento de mi elección.

Qué significa BUCEO para ti.

El Buceo es mi Vida, mi Pasión y mi Esperanza de poder formar a las nuevas generaciones a respetar más este mundo, y que nuestra Misión es dar esa información a los más pequeños para que crezcan con estos conocimientos y respeto por el medio Qué tipo de buceo prefieres personalmente.

Soy amante de los sencillo, de la relajación, de encontrarte a ti mismo a través de tu entorno, en los últimos años también he tenido la suerte de poder introducirme en el Mundo de la Apnea a través de una gran profesional pero mejor persona Miguel Lozano, él me ha dado eso que no se puede comprar la ilusión y la templanza.

Richter but not forgetting Frank Wertz, who instilled something very simple in me, that every day we learn things and we generally learn more from people who make mistakes rather than the other way round.

Why did you want to specialize in teaching, given that you now work for SSI, was it something you chose?

I chose the profession of diving because I love nature and at the same time teaching, communication and passion. Diving has given me the possibility of facing these challenges and each day I am happier because of this choice.

What does DIVING mean to you?

Diving is my life, my passion and my hope of educating the new generations to respect this world more. Our mission is to give this information to the youngest so that they grow up with this knowledge and respect for the environment.

Personally, what kind of diving do you prefer?

I love the simple, the calm, the finding yourself through your environment. In recent years I have also had the good luck of getting into Apnea thanks to a great professional but even better person, Miguel Lozano, who has given me what money cannot buy; enthusiasm and temperance.

Cuáles son tus lugares favoritos de buceo.

La Verdad que mi Lugar favorito es estar en el medio acuático, todos los Lugares en el Mundo y ya estado en muchos y me faltan muchos por ver, tienen algo especial es como las personas nos quedaríamos solo con una, normalmente cada persona tiene sus características y sus valores, en el Buceo pasa lo mismo cada lugar tiene su encanto, lo importante es sentirte integrado en ese entorno y relajado.

What are your favorite places to dive?

To be honest, my favorite place is just being in the water, anywhere in the world, I have already been in many places and I still have so much to see, they all have something special. It´s like with people, we would choose only one, in general each person has their own charactaristics and values, in diving the same thing happens, each place has its charm, the important thing is to feel part of this environment and relaxed.

Qué le aconsejarías o qué le dirías alguien que quiera empezar a bucear.

Lo primero que aprender a bucear no es sacarse un Carnet, es aprender algo nuevo y que como suele pasar necesitara de su dedicación y esfuerzo, la recompensa va a ser muy grande, yo no conozco a nadie que en 2 días sea capaz de esquiar o realizar 18 hoyos, lo mismo pasa en el buceo necesita del interés e implicación de la persona para querer aprender lo máximo para poder disfrutar de estas sensaciones que solo en el buceo podemos experimentar.

What advice would you give or what would you say to someone who wanted to begin diving?

The first thing to learn in diving is not getting a licence, it´s to learn something new and what usually happens is that it will require your dedication and effort, but the result will be great. I don´t know anyone that, within 2 days, is able to ski or play 18 holes, the same occurs in diving, it needs the interest and commitment of the person to want to learn as much as possible in order to be able to enjoy those sensations that only us divers can experience.

Cuál es tu material o gadget preferido en tu bolsa de buceo.

Siempre viajo con mi equipo completo de Buceo, el gadget es el equipo completo, el me conoce a mí y yo a él, que mejor manera de disfrutar juntos.

What is your favorite gadget or piece of material in your diving bag?

I always travel with my complete diving gear, the gadget is the entire gear, it knows me and I it, what better way to enjoy something together?

¿Qué te ha empujado a convertirte en un profesional del buceo?

Bueno, hubo una primera persona que influyó decisivamente a ello que fue Manfred Richter una persona especial con una pasión y amor por el Buceo.

También quiero destacar a Luis Villa un pionero de Buceo en España, hablando con él te transmitía el saber y los consejos siempre acertados, sin olvidarme de otro gran amante del Buceo Emili Agusti él también me enseño y me dio las herramientas para crecer, he tenido la suerte de tener grandes personas a mi alrededor, me siento privilegiado.

What has compelled you to become a diving professional?

Well, there was one main person who had a decisive influence on this, Manfred Richter, a special person with a passion and love for diving. I also want to highlight Luis Villa, a pioneer of diving in Spain, in talking to him he would always pass on the most suitable know how and advice, without forgetting another great lover of diving, Emili Agusti, he also taught me and gave me the tools to grow, I have had the good fortune of having great people around me, I feel privileged.

La pregunta es obligada, y espero que no sea incómoda, antes PADI y ahora SSI. ¿Por qué?

Para nada es incomoda, como sabes en su día estuve más de 15 años trabajando como Instructor y como propietario de Centro de Buceo, para posteriormente comenzar a trabajar en una marca de Material de Buceo Aqualung, posteriormente accedí a PADI como Responsable del mercado Español y desde 2014 hasta la fecha estoy en SSI, soy una persona muy inquieta me gustan los retos y desarrollar proyectos, el estancamiento nunca me ha gustado y por ello siempre me gusta coger diferentes experiencias, en este momento SSI es la empresa con mejores Materiales para la Enseñanza y con una Filosofía que protege a las Empresas de Buceo, La Frase “ Es más fácil engañar a la gente que convencerlos de que han sido engañados” ¿Personalmente qué y cómo ha cambiado tu vida personal al estar en el equipo de SSI España?

Bueno existe un Equipo de trabajo muy bueno con personas que además ya nos conocíamos desde hace muchos años a nivel profesional, hoy en día tengo responsabilidades mayores pues hay partes de Training, Marketing, Comercial y Dirección que hay que gestionar, además una de las ventajas es que todo el personal tiene un espíritu muy joven y con ganas de crear y desarrollar cosas y eso se nota, estamos aportando una nueva forma de realizar las cosas, al principio nos llamaban locos, hoy en día todo el mundo intenta copiar nuestro sistema, hay una frase muy buena que dice” si te copian es que has encontrado el camino del Éxito, si además te critican es que no saben ni como copiarte”

This question is a must, and I hope not uncomfortable, first PADI and now SSI. Why? It´s not uncomfortable at all, as you know back in the day I was working as an Instructor and owner of a Diving Center for more than 15 years, and then later began working in a brand of Diving Equipment, Aqualung. Following that I joined PADI as Head of the Spanish market and since 2014 up to now I am in SSI. I am a very restless person, I like challenges and to develop projects, I have never liked stagnancy and as a result I always like to seize different experiences. At present, SSI is the company with the best Materials for Teaching and a philosophy that protects the Diving Companies with the phrase, "It is easier to fool people than to convince them than they have been fooled."

What and how has your personal life changed in being on the SSI Spain team?

Well, it is a very good team and we have known each other on a professional level for many years. I now have greater responsibilities as there are parts of Training, Marketing, Sales and Management that must be managed, plus one of the advantages is that all the staff have a very young spirit with the desire to create and develop things and it shows. We are bringing a new way of doing things, at first they called us crazy, nowadays everyone tries to copy our system, there is a very good phrase that says "if they copy you it is because you have found the path to success, if they criticize you it is because they don´t even know how to copy you."

n medio del Océano Índico, las Islas Maldivas están situadas al suroeste de la India y de Sri Lanka. Un archipiélago compuesto por unas 1200 islas de las cuales solo poco más de 200 están habitadas.

Las Maldivas están distribuidas en unos 26 atolones, algunos en el hemisferio norte y otros en el sur. En este crucero navegaremos por cuatro de ellos: Ari, Felidho, Male Sur y Male Norte, y no cruzaremos el Ecuador.

Si sobrevolar estas islas es un espectáculo, bucearlas es una auténtica maravilla: barcos hundidos, buceos nocturnos con mantas y tiburones, snorkel/buceo con tiburón ballena, canales, montañas submarinas y un larguísimo etc.

Desde 2010 estas islas proclamaron la protección completa para los tiburones y en el año 2009 también se crearon varias reservas marinas para la protección de mantas y tiburones ballena. En la actualidad este pequeño país cuenta con más de 33 aéreas marinas protegidas, de ahí que la vida colonice sus fondos por completo.

EL SOUTHERN CROSS

Tiene 38 metros de eslora, 10 de manga y tres cubiertas y es el más veterano de la flota de Submaldives.

Fabricado en 2002, tiene grabadas en sus cuadernas los mejores puntos de buceo de estos atolones.

Majestuoso, aunque no muy moderno, pero sí muy cómodo y práctico.

Los camarotes tienen aire acondicinado y baño individual con agua fría y caliente.

El habitáculo común es muy amplio con cómodos sofás, TV, biblioteca y perfectamente acondicionado para los fotógrafos/videógrafos submarinos, con multitud de enchufes para cargar baterías y compartimientos 44 ❙ LET'S DIVE MAG !

he Maldives are located to the southwest of India and Sri Lanka, in the middle of the Indian Ocean. They are an archipelago composed of some 1200 islands of which only a little more than 200 are inhabited.

The Maldives are spread among some 26 atolls, a few in the northern hemisphere and others in the south. We will sail through four of them on this cruise: Ari, Felidho, North and South Male, but will not cross the Equator.

If flying over these islands is quite the show, diving them is truly a wonder; sunk ships, night dives with mantas and sharks, snorkeling / diving with whale sharks, channels, mountains under the sea and much more.

Since 2010 these islands have declared full protection for sharks and in 2009 several marine reserves were created for the protection of mantas and whale sharks. Currently, this small country has more than 33 marine protected areas, and consequently, the marine life colonizes the ocean floors completely.

SOUTHERN CROSS

38 meters in length, 10 meters in width and with three decks, it is the most veteran of the Submaldives fleet. Built in 2002, it has the best diving sites of the atolls engraved in its timber. Majestic, though not too modern, very comfortable and practical. The cabins have air conditioning and attached bathroom with hot and cold water.

The lounge area is very spacious with comfortable sofas, a TV and reading area and is perfectly equipped for underwater photographers / videographers, with plenty of outlets to charge batteries and compartments for storing the cameras. On the main deck,

To fill the hours between dives, Judith organizes a visit to the islands and moonlit barbecues on the beach, in addition to sharing interesting evening presentations with us including her passion and knowledge of the mantas and the work that is being done in the Maldives with them.

SCORPION, EL DHONI

Southern Cross liveaboard is always accompanied by its dhoni, Scorpion, where we leave the equipment on the first day and from where all the dives are made.

Navigation is always smooth and both were created in the same year. It is 18 meters in length and 6 meters in width with a capacity for 22 divers, 4 guides and 3 crewmembers.

LOS BUCEOS EN MALDIVAS

La temperatura del agua ronda los 28 - 30 grados durante la mayor parte del año, así que una licra o un neopreno de 3 mm son suficientes.

Aunque si vamos a realizar muchos buceos sucesivos un 5 mm no está de más.

EL MITO DE LAS CORRIENTES

Estas islas tienen fama de fuertes corrientes, que sí existen en algunos buceos, pero gracias a los expertos guías son siempre a favor: es alucinante volar entre aguas y entre bancos de peces sin el más mínimo esfuerzo y sin consumir air.

CANALES

In this route you will see mantas at night, mantas during the day and visit the Bay of Hanifaru.

DIVING IN THE MALDIVES

The water temperature is around 2830 degrees for most of the year, so a lycra or 3mm neoprene is enough.

However, if we are going to do many successive dives, a 5 mm isn´t too much.

THE MYTH OF THE CURRENTS

These islands have a reputation for strong currents, which do in fact exist in some dives, but thanks to expert guides, they are always in our favor. It is simply incredible to fly between waters and between shoals of fish without the slightest bit of effort and without consuming air.

CHANNELS

Algunos buceos son entre canales: se trata de descender y dejarnos llevar por la corriente hasta la pared donde nos agarraremos al fondo y disfrutaremos del espectáculo de multitud de tiburones pasando ante nosotros.

Some of the dives are between channels: Here we descend and let ourselves be carried by the current up to the wall where we situate ourselves on the bottom and enjoy the throng of sharks passing before us.

THILAS

These are mountains under the sea that shoot up from the bottom almost breaking the surface. They are usually filled with marine life and their walls are colonized by beautifully colored soft corals.

Quizá los corales no sean lo más espectacular de estas islas, pero la cantidad de fauna grande que se puede observar es difícil de encontrar en cualquier otro lugar del planeta.

LA RUTA DE LOS 4 ATOLONES

Quizá la más típica y la más frecuentada, pero la variedad de buceos y la exclusividad de algunos de ellos, la hacen única en el mundo. Para mi gusto, la mejor y más económica.

Eso sí, resulta importantísimo tener un Big Boss, en nuestro caso Judith de la Rosa, que se conozca al dedillo los buceos y que se adelante a los demás barcos, para evitar los desagradables embotellamientos bajo el agua.

Quedé realmente sorprendido de la cantidad de mantas avistadas durante el crucero.

LA PRIMERA EN LA FRENTE

Encienden un potente foco en la popa del barco para atraer cantidad de plancton. Al cabo de un rato oyes “¡Ya están aquí!”, “¡A cambiarse, chicos!” y empieza el stress. Si te da tiempo a llegar a popa, podrás ver varios ejemplares de enormes mantas que han acudido a la llamada del plancton.

Nos vestimos y, de rodillas como si estuviéramos en una iglesia, nos situamos sobre un fondo arenoso a una profundidad de unos 10 m, dispuestos a disfrutar del espectáculo.

Perhaps the corals are not the most outstanding of these islands, but the quantity of large fauna that can be seen is difficult to find anywhere else on the planet.

4 ATOLLS ROUTE

Perhaps the most typical and the most frequented, yet the variety of dives and the exclusivity of some of them make this route unique in the world.

In my opinion the best, and most economical.

Of course, it is very important to have a great leader at the helm, Judith de la Rosa in our case, who knows the in´s and out´s of the dives and gets ahead of the other boats in order to avoid unpleasant bottlenecks under the water.

Of particular note was the impressive quantity of manta rays seen throughout the cruise. Truly striking.

FIRST COME FIRST SERVED

A powerful spotlight on the stern of the boat is turned on to attract lots of plankton. After a little while you hear "They're here!", "Go change, guys!" and the excitement begins! If you have time get to the stern, you can catch several examples of huge mantas that have responded to the call of the plankton. We dressed and, kneeling as if at church, we situated ourselves on a sandy bottom at a depth of about 10 meters, ready to enjoy the show.

Se mueve mucho, muchísimo, cuando habla por lo que es muy difícil fotografiarla en tierra.

Lleva más de 15 años en estas islas y se conoce los fondos como la palma de la mano. Ha conseguido una tripulación amable, simpática y cercana…

Nunca lo había visto. Buceas con ella y te das cuenta de que se ha integrado en este paraíso azul y que trata de trasmitir su amor por el mar a todos sus clientes, que al poco rato son sus amigos. No te conocía, Judith, y ahora me quito el sombrero… MH.

LA INMERSIÓN CON LOS NODRIZA DE TARDE Y DE NOCHE ES INOLVIDABLE.

DIVING WITH THE NURSE SHARKS IN THE EVENING AND AT NIGHT IS SIMPLY UNFORGETTABLE.

Enormes mantas pasan ante nuestros focos ignorando nuestra presencia y engullendo tanto plancton como pueden; algunas golpeándote amigablemente, porque supongo que no nos ven. Contamos hasta cuatro ejemplares, de los que disfrutamos hasta que se acaba el aire. Imposible aburrirse ante tal espectáculo.

ESTACIONES DE LIMPIEZA… TRES SEGUIDAS

Disfrutar de las mantas durante prácticamente toda una inmersión, solo acostumbra a suceder en las estaciones de limpieza, cuando están desparasitándose.

Durante el briefing las instrucciones son claras: no nadar por encima de la estación de limpieza. Difícil de cumplir, viendo estos gigantes tan cerca de ti, cuando quieres que tapen toda la pantalla de la cámara.

Desafortunadamente oí sonar “la maraca”, o sonajero submarino, avisándome de que me estaba saltando las normas en alguna ocasión...

LLEGAR Y BESAR EL SANTO

“¡Equipaos y saltad rápido!”. Con estas palabras empezábamos la búsqueda del tiburón ballena.

Previamente, durante el briefing, nos avisaron de que podía ser cuestión de horas… Pero en cuestión de segundos lo localizaron y saltamos todos al agua con botella. ¿Cuestión de suerte? Nadamos con él varios minutos, mientras una troupe de snorkelers lo perseguía por superficie, y pudimos disfrutar de su imponente y descomunal presencia.

Enormous mantas passed in front of the spotlights ignoring our presence and gobbling up as much plankton as they could; some grazing up against us in a friendly manner, as I imagine they didn´t see us. We counted up to four types, enjoying them until we ran out of air. Impossible to get bored with such a show.

CLEANING STATIONS...

THREE IN A ROW

Enjoying the manta rays during practically an entire dive usually only happens in the cleaning stations, when they are getting rid of parasites.

During the briefing the instructions are clear: do not swim above the cleaning station. Difficult to comply, seeing these giants so close to you, when you want them to fill the entire screen of your camera. Unfortunately I heard " the maraca", or underwater rattle, warning me that I was overstepping the rules once or twice…

JACKPOT

"Get your gear on and jump fast!" With these words we began the search for the whale shark.

Previously, during the briefing, they warned us that it could take a number of hours ... But in a matter of seconds they located him and we all jumped into the water with a tank. Question of luck perhaps? We swam with him for several minutes, while a group of snorkelers followed him from the surface, and we were able to enjoy his imposing and enormous presence.

INMERSIÓN AL ATARDECER Y NOCTURNA CON NODRIZAS

Con un 10 en todos los buceos realizados, el nivel era muy alto. ¿Sería posible mantenerlo? Mejor aún. ¡Lo superamos!

El objetivo era bucear con tiburones nodriza al atardecer. Saltamos al agua sobre un fondo arenoso cerca de un muelle: un fondo carente de belleza y de vida, pero al acercarnos al muelle empezamos a encontrar tiburones nodriza de tamaño considerable, superior a los 2m de longitud, reposando en el fondo. En posición ideal para ser fotografiados.

Vimos también pastinacas y algunos ejemplares de túnidos.

Repetimos la inmersión por la noche y al acercarnos vimos que el número de nodrizas crecía exponencialmente. Al mirar hacia “lo negro” se podía observar un auténtico muro de tiburones nadando en formación perfecta. ¡Impresionante! Mientras, al lado de muelle, enormes ejemplares de ráyidos y túnidos acompañaban a los tiburones nodriza que abandonaban el muro… Una inmersión de las que dejan huella forever.

With a perfect score in all dives performed thus far, the bar was set very high. Would it be possible to maintain this level? Even better… We smashed it!

The objective was to dive with nurse sharks at sunset. We jumped into the water on a sandy bottom near a dock, a bottom not necessarily rich in beauty nor marine life, but as we approached the dock we began to spot nurse sharks of considerable size, more than 2 meters in length, resting on the bottom... an ideal position to be captured on camara. We also saw stingrays and some specimens of tuna.

We repeated the dive at night and upon coming closer we saw that the number of nurse sharks was growing exponentially. Upon looking at "the black" you could see an authentic wall of sharks swimming in perfect formation. Impressive! Meanwhile, next to the dock, huge specimens of stingrays and tuna accompanied the nurse sharks that had left the wall ... This was of those dives that leaves their mark on you forever.

Por regla general, buceo en canales es sinónimo de corriente y así nos lo dieron a entender durante el briefing.

Saltamos al azul, en negativo, y nos dejamos llevar hasta el canto del arrecife donde nos agarramos, procurando no deteriorar el fondo. No había mucha corriente y probé el fabuloso gancho de Cressi Sub, que funcionó a las mil maravillas, dejando mis manos libres para la cámara.

As a general rule, diving in channels is synonymous with current and this was made clear to us during the briefing. We jumped straight down into the water and let ourselves be carried to the edge of the reef where we grabbed on, trying to avoid damaging the bottom. There was not much current and I tried out the excellent hook from Cressi Sub which worked like a charm, leaving my hands free for my camera.

pero, a medida que pasaban los minutos, un mayor número de ejemplares acudían a la zona. Generalmente huyen al notar la presencia del buceador pero esta vez cada vez había más. No me había percatado del trabajo que estaban realizando “los espanta tiburones”… Los dos guías del barco evitaban con su presencia que los tiburones se alejaran. El nivel continuaba subiendo.

A pocas millas de Male existe una conservera de atún. Las cabezas, pieles y espinas son devueltos al mar para que sirvan de alimento a los peces y, bajo el agua, se condensa una cantidad exuberante de vida.

Saltamos y descendimos a más de 20 m, aunque el fondo no merece la pena. La estrategia era hacernos consumir aire, para no hacer un “buceo eterno”, pues lo interesante y donde se condensa la vida no está a más de 10m de profundidad. Nos topamos con enormes cabezas de atún, con varios ejemplares de peces (emperador o mariposas) acabándolas de limpiar y a los que, al estar distraídos comiendo, pudimos fotografiar sin que huyeran.

A medida que ascendíamos, enormes y muy abundantes ejemplares de morena posaban para nuestras cámaras desde sus guaridas (algunas de ellas con más de media docena de ejemplares de distintos tipos).

AND TO ROUND OUT, TUNA FACTORY

A few miles from Male there is a tuna cannery. The heads, skins and bones are returned to the sea to serve as food for the fish and, below the water, an abundant quantity of marine life condenses. We jumped in and descended more than 20 meters, although the bottom isn´t epecially worth it. The strategy was to make us consume air in order to avoid an "eternal dive", given that the most interesting spot and where the marine life condenses lies at a depth of no more than 10 meters.

We were met with enormous heads of tuna, with several types of fish (emperor or butterfly fish) finishing up cleaning them and we could photograph those too distracted by their eating to flee.

As we ascended, enormous and highly abundant specimens of morays posed for our cameras from their crevices (a few of them featuring more than half a dozen specimens of distinct types).

Pero el espectáculo está a menor profundidad, donde una inmensa nube de peces ángel portaestandarte compite con enormes ejemplares de pastinacas y de morenas para acabar de comer la poca carne que queda entre las espinas de los peces.

Mi resumen personal sería: Que nadie tenga miedo de las corrientes. En Maldivas… ¡hay que disfrutarlas! n

¿Quién es Elena Kryzhanovskaya? s de nacionalidad rusa, una mujer de pocas palabras pero de noble sonrisa. El buceo apareció en su vida de manera fortuita pero tal como entró allí se instaló…Buceadora desde el 1996 e instructora de cuevas desde el 2006.

Con miles de inmersiones en su haber nos cuenta lo complejo que le fue hacerse un hueco dentro de este mundillo: “fue el boca a boca el que me dio la oportunidad de crear mi espacio como profesional de la enseñanza en buceo dentro de mi país “ …..Considerada en la actualidad como una de las mejores docentes.

Gracias a esta experiencia que le preceden se ha convertido en una de las pocas personas capaces de salir de esta cueva por si misma tras sufrir una serie de incidentes durante la inmersión que casi acaban con hechos fatales.

Who is Elena Kryzhanovskaya? he is of Russian nationality, a woman of few words but with a noble smile. Diving appeared in her life by chance but as she entered, she established herself... A Diver since 1996 and cave instructor since 2006. With thousands of dives under her belt she tells us how complicated it was to make a name for herself in this world : "It was word of mouth that gave me the opportunity to establish my space as a teaching profesional in diving in my country" .....She is currently considered one of the best educators.

Thanks to this level of experience that precedes her, she has become one of the few people capable of getting out of this cave on her own after suffering a series of incidents during the dive that almost ended fatally.

BUCEADORAS QUE IMPRESIONAN AMAZING DIVERS termal. En la actualidad este acuífero está en recesión y la mayor parte del agua que porta la cueva es marina.

Aunque la cavidad no tiene salida al mar, las filtraciones rocosas han hecho el trabajo.

La cueva del agua está compuesta por un laberinto de galerías con mas de 3 kilómetros de longitud que se adentra en la sierra. En la actualidad sigue siendo explorada por expertos equipos de espeleobuceadores y está considerada una de las cavidades más peligrosas de España.

A la cueva del agua se le calculan unos 21 metros de profundidad. En superficie mantiene una temperatura de 18º que suben a 30º si bajamos a 6 metros.

Bucear en la cueva del agua de Isla Plana requiere una alta exigencia técnica y la inmersión es solo aconsejable a buceadores con mucha experiencia.

Uno de los mayores peligros que encierra la cavidad, es que sus aguas se enturbian con mucha facilidad debido al sedimento que decora tanto el fondo como el techo, y esto hace prácticamente inevitable generar visibilidad cero al paso de los buceadores, sobre todo en zonas poco visitadas. La cueva mantiene una serie de hilos guía (de cuyo estado de conservación es necesario estar informado antes de realizar la inmersión) para realizar el recorrido marcado.

Al preguntar que sucedió en aquella inmersión, Elena nos contó lo siguiente: Habitualmente en cada uno de mis viajes a España para visitar a mi hija, procuro que me acompañe mi equipo de buceo y casi siempre traigo clientes o amigos de mi país para que conozcan esta maravillosa cueva.

En este viaje no fue menos y vine acompañada pero esta vez el objetivo era distinto ya que, supe que habían encontrado continuidad al final de la cueva a partir de los 1000 metros de entrada lineal.

Me comentaron que era una zona poco transitada y que era complejo 62 ❙ LET'S DIVE MAG !

The Cueva del Agua is composed of a labyrinth of galleries spanning more than 3 kilometers in length that enters into the mountains. At present time it is still being explored by expert teams of diver-speleologists and it is considered one of the most dangerous cavities in Spain.

The Cueva del Agua measures about 21 meters deep. It maintains a temperature of 18º on the surface that goes up to to 30º if we go down to 6 meters.

Diving in the Cueva del Agua of Isla Plana requires high technical expertise and the dive is only advisable for very experienced divers.

One of the greatest dangers encapsulating the cavity is that its waters become murky quite easily due to the sediment lining not only the floor but the ceiling, and this makes zero visibility for divers practically an inevitability, especially in zones rarely visited.

The cave maintains a series of guide lines (whose state of conservation is necessary in order to stay informed before performing the dive) to actualize the marked route.

When asked what happened on the dive, Elena related the following to us: Usually in each of my trips to Spain to visit my daughter, I try to bring my diving gear and almost always bring clients or friends from my country so that they discover this wonderful cave.

This trip was no different and I came accompanied but this time the objective was different as I knew that they had found continuity towards the end of the cave as of 1000 linear meters from the entrance.

They told me that it was a zone not much transited and the passage towards the new gallery was complex,

BUCEADORAS QUE IMPRESIONAN AMAZING DIVERS el paso hacia la nueva galería, de modo que planificamos ir allí tras realizar tres primeras inmersiones de inspección.

Ya lo teníamos todo preparado, nos hicimos una idea aproximada de como sería el paso final, y nos dirigimos a hacer esa inmersión que tantas ganas tenia de realizar por descubrir un lugar nuevo de esta cueva.

Una vez llegados al paso estrecho, dejamos en la linea parte de nuestro material ya que no cabíamos con todo, a estas alturas llevábamos una hora y media de inmersión aproximadamente.

Le cedí el paso a mi compañero, como habíamos acordado, de modo que él cruzó correctamente. Cuando intenté pasar, yo un fallo mécanico de un regulador que no pude solucionar, me hizo retornar al mismo lugar donde habíamos dejado el resto de nuestro material. Mi compañero en visibilidad cero, tras un pequeño tiempo de espera y viendo que yo no le seguía, volvió a salir a buscarme. Nos encontramos en el punto de reunión del resto de material, y al comunicarle la avería decidimos retornar hacia la salida. Nos volvimos a colocar todo el material pero el sedimento comenzó a envolvernos y estando yo con todo puesto, cogí una de las botellas de mi compañero para iniciar la salida lo antes posible y dársela en una zona de mayor visibilidad, pero entonces sucedió lo inexplicable, estando en visibilidad cero encontramos una bifurcación mal señalada (por lo visto alguien la manipuló días anteriores y nosotros no nos dimos cuenta de ello al entrar) con la mala fortuna de dirigirnos al lugar erróneo donde la linea terminaba en una roca mal atada, de modo que mi compañero se quedo con el extremo de la linea en la mano, sin continuidad y sin visibilidad en un lugar muy muy estrecho.

Nuestro primer pensamiento fue que se había roto la linea principal, de modo que como estipulan los protocolos me puse manos a la obra a hacer busqueda de linea, en NO VISIBILIDAD mi compañero afortunadamente consigió retornar por la misma linea, encontrar la bifurcación y coger la linea correcta. En ese momento el hizo una 64 ❙ LET'S DIVE MAG !

so we planned to go there after carrying out three first inspection dives.

We had everything ready, we got a rough idea of what the final passage would be like, and went on towards doing the dive which I was so excited about to discover a new place in this cave.

Once arriving at the narrow passage, we left part of our material in the line since we didn´t fit with everything, at this stage we were about an hour and a half into the dive. I yielded way to my companion as we had agreed upon, so that he crossed okay. When I tried to pass, a mechanical failure of a regulator that I was unable to fix forced me to return to the same place where we had left the rest of our material. My companion, in zero visibility, after a short waiting period and seeing that I wasn´t following him, came back out to look for me. We found eachother at the meeting point where the rest of the material was, and upon communicating the malfunction, we decided to return to the exit. We started to put back the material but the sediment began to wrap around us and since I had everything on, I took one of the tanks of my companion to start the exit as soon as possible and get to a zone of greater visibility, but then the unexplicable happened, being in zero visibility we found a poorly marked bifurcation (apparently someone had messed with it days before and we didn´t realize it when entering) with the misfortune of directing us to the wrong place where the line ended in a badly tied rock, in such a way that my companion was left with the end of the line in his hand, without continuity and without visibility in an extremely narrow place.

Our first thought was that the main line had been broken, thus, as stipulated in the protocols, I got down to work to search for the line, and in NO VISIBILITY my companion luckily managed to return along the same line, find the bifurcation and grab the correct line. At this point he evaluated the gas, he had one tank less and couldn´t spend much time

valoración de gas, él tenía una botella menos y no podía pasar mucho más tiempo buscándome si no él tampoco saldría, hizo lo correcto y salió rápidamente a buscar ayuda.

Ambos llevábamos scooter, así que cuando escuché el motor de su scooter en movimiento, sentí un gran alivio, porque pensé que él saldría y no tendría que preocuparme en buscarle, ahora solo debía pensar en mí. Yo seguía en ese agujero sin visibilidad, absolutamente a ciegas e intentando encontrar continuidad con la linea, con tan mala suerte que en esa búsqueda una roca atrapó el cordón de mi scooter y lo arrancó de mi equipo, de modo que no tenía propulsor, toda la salida tendría que hacerla aleteando, eso supone mayor tiempo de salida, mayor esfuerzo y consumo de aire. Aun asi, no me dejé llevar por todos esos contratiempos y seguí concentrada en mi búsqueda sin permitir a mi cabeza que hipotetizara, ni generara miedos, ni ansiedad, sabía que tenía que hacer y solo permití la opción de llevarlo a cabo.

Por fin apareció mi primer golpe de suerte, tras tantos infortunios, encontré la linea principal y comencé mi salida, cuando conseguí salir de la no visibilidad tras muchos minutos sola y a ciegas, pude hacer una estimación del gas que me quedaba y de los elementos de los que disponía, y sin prisa pero sin pausa comencé mi larga salida agotando una botella tras otra.

Cuando por fin consegui ver el primer rayo de luz la última botella de aire que me quedaba comenzaba a marcas 0 bares y los últimos 30 metros los hice respirando medio aire medio agua, eso me hizo llegar a superficie casi cianotica ante la mirada asombrada de los equipos de rescate quienes acabaron ayudándome a salir

I would have to make the entire exit kicking, which implied more time in exiting, greater effort and consumption of air. Even so, I didn´t allow myself to get bogged down by all these setbacks and I continued focused on my search without letting my mind hypothesize, generate fears, or anxiety, I knew what I had to do and I only gave myself the option of doing it.

Finally my first stroke of luck appeared, and after so much misfortune I found the main line and began my exit, when I managed to get out of the no visibility zone after many minutes alone and blind, I could estimate the gas that I had left and the elements at my disposal, and without rushing but without stopping I began my long exit exhausting one tank after another.

When I finally managed to see the first ray of light the last tank of air I had left started to mark 0 bars and I did the last 30 meters breathing half air half water, making me reach the surface almost cyanotic to the amazed looks of the rescue teams who ended up helping me out.

Gracias a mi control mental conseguir mantener un bajo consumo de aire y eso me garantizó la salida, pero si llego a entretenerme tan solo un minuto más tal vez no estaría contando esto ahora…

Thanks to my mental control I managed to maintain a low consumption of air which guaranteed my exit, but if I had lingered even just a minute more, perhaps I wouldn´t be telling you this right now…

Sin duda toda una experiencia llena de coraje, saber hacer y autocontrol, la suerte estaba de su lado pese a que no se lo puso fácil… n

La compensación es uno de los temas más interesantes y demandados por apneístas y buceadores.

Cuántas veces nos han preguntado: ¿pero no te duelen los oídos cuando bajas? Para resolver esta duda, en este artículo hablaremos de la anatomía del oído y los senos paranasales, conoceremos las técnicas de compensación y cómo ejecutarlas, así como los posibles riesgos por un fallo de compensación y cómo tratar de evitarlos.

Equalization is one of the most interesting and most requested subjects made by freedivers and divers. Many a time they have asked us: but don´t your ears hurt when you go down? ntes de nada es imprescindible conocer la ley de Boyle para entender que le suceden a los espacios de aire una vez iniciamos el d e s c e n s o . L e y d e B o y l e : “A temperatura constante, el volumen de un gas es inversamente proporcional a la presión absoluta”.

En el siguiente cuadro podemos obser var que a nivel del mar, la presión total es de 1 atmósfera (peso de la columna de aire), por lo tanto el volumen de nuestros pulmones, es igual al volumen total. A medida que descendemos, cada 10 metros aumenta 1 atmósfera, por lo que la presión será el doble que en superficie (2 atmósferas) y por lo tanto nuestro pulmón disminuirá a la mitad.

Pongamos el ejemplo de un apneísta que tiene 6 litros de volumen total.

Una vez inicie el descenso, a sólo 10 metros de profundidad el volumen de sus pulmones se reducirá a la mitad (3 litros). A 20 metros donde hay 3 atmósferas de presión (1 atm por cada 10 metros + 1 atm de la superficie), el pulmón se reducirá en 1/3 por lo que tendrá un volumen total de 2 litros, y así sucesivamente.

irstly, it is essential to be familiar with Boyle's Law in order to understand what happens to the air spaces once we begin the descent. Boyle's Law states: "At a constant temperature, the volume of a gas is inversely proportional to the absolute pressure".

In the following chart we can see that at sea level, the total pressure is 1 ATM (weight of the column of air), thus the volume of our lungs is equal to the total volume. As we descend, with every 10 meters there is an increase of 1 ATM, so the pressure will be double than that of the surface (2 ATM) and consequently our lung will decrease by half.

Let's take the example of a freediver who has 6 liters of total volume. Once the descent begins, at only 10 meters depth the volume of his lungs will be reduced by half (3 liters). At 20 meters where there is 3 ATM (1 ATM for every 10 meters + 1 ATM of the surface), the lung will be reduced by 1/3 so it will have a total volume of 2 liters, and so on.

Due to the effect of the pressure, the air spaces of our body are compressed in proportion to the external pressure.

Debido al efecto de la presión, los espacios de aire de nuestro cuerpo se comprimen de forma proporcional a la presión externa. Dicho de otra manera, nuestros pulmones, senos paranasales, trompas de Eustaquio, oído medio, y en el caso de la apnea, la máscara, se comprimen disminuyendo su volumen a medida que descendemos, por lo que debemos compensar la presión externa insuflando aire sobre los mismos.

LOS PULMONES

In other words, our lungs, paranasal sinuses, Eustachian tubes, middle ear, and in the case of apnea, the mask, are compressed decreasing their volume as we descend, so we must compensate for the external pressure by blowing air over these.

THE LUNGS

Los pulmones, al ser órganos flexibles que se comprimen y expanden de forma natural, se adaptan perfectamente a la presión ejercida, por lo que no es necesario compensarlos. De todos modos, debemos ganar flexibilidad pulmonar para poder descender grandes profundidades sin sufrir un barotrauma.

The lungs, as they are a flexible organ that compresses and expands naturally, adapt perfectly to the pressure exerted, thus they don´t need to be equalized. In any case we have to gain lung flexibility in order to descend to large depths without suffering a barotrauma.

LOS SENOS FRONTALES Y PARANASALES

The facial bones contain four groups of hollow spaces called paranasal sinuses. The air-filled spaces of the nose and sinuses add resonance to the voice and make the head lighter.

Like the nasal cavity, the sinuses produce mucus to trap dirt and then expel it through the small openings of the sinuses.

The paranasal sinuses become blocked when the mucus is not eliminated at the speed that is produced.

This can be due to different reasons:

Los huesos faciales contienen cuatro grupos de espacios huecos llamados senos paranasales. Los espacios llenos de aire de la nariz y senos añaden resonancia a la voz y la hacen la cabeza más ligera. Como la cavidad nasal, los senos producen mucosidad para atrapar la suciedad y luego expulsarla a través de las pequeñas aperturas de los senos.

Los senos paranasales se bloquean cuando la mucosidad no es eliminada a la velocidad que es producida. Esto puede ser causado por diferentes razones: • Resfriados y alergias • Exposición continuada a irritantes tales como humo o productos químicos • Aire seco (seca el moco haciéndolo más pegajoso y más difícil de expulsar) • Productos lácteos (aumentan la producción de mucosidad)

THE FRONTAL AND PARANASAL SINUSES

• Colds and allergies • Continued exposure to irritants such as smoke or chemical products • Dry air (dries the mucus making it more sticky and harder to expel) • Dairy products (increase the production of mucus) The frontal and paranasal sinuses are equalized automatically each time we equalize the ears, so if they are not blocked by mucus we should not perform any specific technique.

Los senos frontales y paranasales se compensan de forma automática cada vez que compensamos los oídos, por lo que si no están bloqueados por la mucosidad, no debemos realizar ninguna técnica específica.

LA MÁSCARA

En apnea es imprescindible el uso de la máscara, por lo que forma parte de los espacios de aire que debemos compensar. Con una ligera exhalación por la nariz compensaremos la presión ejercida sobre la máscara. Es importante tener una máscara de volumen reducido para no malgastar el aire que tenemos y siempre exhalar de forma sutil.

LAS TROMPAS DE EUSTAQUIO

Una compensación cómoda es posible gracias a las trompas de Eustaquio.

Este tubo no sólo conduce el aire para compensar al oído medio, sino también permite el drenaje de las secreciones mucosas desde este espacio. Está situado en la parte superior de la garganta y aproximadamente a la altura de los orificios nasales. Está formado en un 50% por hueso y en un 50% por una membrana carnosa que a su vez está parcialmente envuelta por un cartílago en forma de C. Este cartílago permite que el tubo esté influido no sólo por la propia gravedad cuando se desciende cabeza abajo, sino por el efecto de tragar y los cambios de 74 ❙ LET'S DIVE MAG !

THE MASK

Use of the mask is essential in apnea and it makes up one of the air spaces that needs to be equalized. With a slight exhalation through the nose we equalize for the pressure exerted on the mask. It is important to have a mask of reduced volume in order to avoid wasting the air that we have and to always exhale gently.

THE EUSTACHIAN TUBES

A comfortable equalization is possible thanks to the Eustachian tubes.

This tube not only conducts the air to equalize the middle ear, but also allows drainage of mucous secretions from this area. It is located in the upper part of the throat and approximately at the level of the nostrils. It is composed of 50% bone and 50% fleshy membrane which in turn is partially enveloped by a cartilage in the form of C. This cartilage allows the tube to be influenced not only by gravity itself when descending head first, but by the act of swallowing and the changes of pressure originating from the respiratory system during equalization.

This tube is usually closed although with some movements of the jaw

Este tubo se encuentra normalmente cerrado aunque con algunos movimientos de mandíbula (como tragar) se abre y cierra, lo que produce ese sonido típico que se puedo oír dentro de los oídos al comer o beber.

La flexibilidad (tamaño, forma, diámetro) del tubo varía de un apneísta a otro por lo que algunas personas nunca tienen ningún problema de compensación. Sin embargo, la mayoría de los apneístas son poco tolerantes a los cambios de presión y tienen que enviar un suave soplo de aire a las trompas para generar una sobre presión tanto en el oído medio como en los senos paranasales para compensar la presión.

EL OÍDO MEDIO

El oído se divide en 3 partes: • El oído externo es la parte visible consistente en la aurícula y el canal auditivo • El oído interno es el órgano auditivo en sí, lleno de fluido, por lo que no es necesaria su compensación • El oído medio está lleno de aire para transmitir las vibraciones del oído externo al interno. Ésta es la parte que necesita ser compensada durante un buceo

(such as swallowing) it opens and closes, which produces the typical sound that can be heard inside the ears when eating or drinking.

The flexibility (size, shape, diameter) of the tube varies from one freediver to another, thus some people never have any problems with equalization.

However, the majority of freedivers are not very tolerant to the changes in pressure and have to gently blow some air to the tubes to generate an overpressure both in the middle ear and in the paranasal sinuses to compensate for the pressure.

THE MIDDLE EAR

The ear is divided into 3 parts: • The outer ear is the visible part consisting of the auricula and the auditory canal • The inner ear is the auditory organ itself, full of fluid, thus it doesn´t need to be equalized • The middle ear is filled with air in order to transmit the vibrations from the outer ear to the inner ear. This is the part that needs to be equalized during a dive.

During the dive, the pressure increases compressing the air of the middle ear. As a result, the eardrum is forced inward reducing the space of the middle ear, so the freediver must comLET'S DIVE MAG ! ❙ 75

FISIOLOGÍA DE LA COMPENSACIÓN PHYSIOLOGY OF COMPENSATION Durante la inmersión la presión aumenta comprimiendo el aire del oído medio. Como resultado, el tímpano es forzado hacia dentro reduciendo el espacio del oído medio, por lo que el apneísta debe compensar esta presión dirigiendo aire al oído medio a través de las trompas de Eustaquio.

LA COMPENSACIÓN DEL OÍDO MEDIO

En un apneísta principiante, al descender cabeza abajo en la columna de agua, puede hacer que aumenten los problemas de c o m p e n s a c i ó n . A l a l e t e a r, manteniéndose en paralelo al cabo y cabeza abajo al dar el golpe de riñón, normalmente produce una desconcentración en el proceso de la compensación, por lo que es muy impor tante resolver cualquier problema potencial antes de entrar al agua.

Apneístas principiantes pueden tener tubos de Eustaquio más pequeños – o parcialmente obstruidos – o aún no dominan las técnicas de compensación. Por estos motivos, la primera compensación debe realizarse en superficie antes del descenso.

Esto ayuda de dos maneras: La compensación en superficie ayuda a previnir problemas potenciales de compensación antes del descenso, proporcionando una almohada de aire detrás del tímpano, haciendo más fáciles las siguientes compesaciones.

EQUALIZATION OF THE MIDDLE EAR

In a beginner freediver, when descending head first in the water column, equalization problems can arise.

Kicking, while staying parallel to the rope with head down when doing the duck dive, usually produces a deconcentration in the process of equalization. As a result, it is very important to resolve any potential problems before going into the water.

Beginning freedivers may have smaller Eustachian tubes - or partially clogged ones - or have not yet mastered the techniques of equalization.

As a result, the first equalization must be carried out on the surface before the descent.

Sin la compensación en superficie, la compresión por la presión puede hacer que los tubos de Eustaquio se mantengan cerrados en tan sólo 1 metro de profundidad, obligando al apneísta a soplar más fuerte en el intento de volver a inflar los tubos de Eustaquio. Una compensación tardía produce que sea vir tualmente imposible compensar y aumente el riesgo de barotrauma. Una compensación previa en superficie es una medida de seguridad para evitar barotraumas que deben formar parte de la rutina antes del golpe de riñón.

This allows air to enter the now inflated Eustachian tubes more easily during descent. Without equalization on the surface, the compression due to the pressure can cause the Eustachian tubes to remain closed in only 1 meter depth, forcing the freediver to blow harder in an attempt to re-inflate the Eustachian tubes. Late equalization makes it virtually impossible to equalize and increases the risk of barotrauma. A prior equalization on the surface is a safety measure to avoid barotraumas that should form part of the routine before the duck dive.

Hay un grupo de ejercicios básicos que deberás dominar a la perfección, durante la formación tu instructor te hará repetirlos hasta que salgan de forma automática y la memoria muscular los realice casi por instinto. El v-drill, s-drill, lanzado de boya, aleteos y ‘trim’ son el A-B-C y representan la esencia de este tipo de curso.

There is a group of basic exercises that you should master to perfection, during the training your instructor will have you repeat them until they become automatic and muscle memory is performed almost instinctively. The v-drill, s-drill, buoy throw, kicking and ¨trim¨ are the A-B-C´s and represent the essence of this type of course.

El buceo profundo es una de las especialidades más atractivas.

V-DRILL

Se trata de ser capaz de manipular en inmersión los grifos del bibotella que el buceador usará en este tipo de formación, estableciendo un protocolo de emergencia en caso de pérdida de gas. Hay otros factores clave como la holgura del arnés, lo apretado que nos vaya el traje seco, la posición del cuerpo del buceador, la técnica al intentar alcanzar la grifería e incluso el montaje del bibotella con la placa y tu instructor sabrá detectar y corregir para la correcta ejecución del ejercicio.

S-DRILL

El ‘s-drill’ es el ejercicio de donar gas al compañero y como tal es un procedimiento que en una situación real representa una emergencia y requiere hacerlo de forma correcta, rápida y efectiva. Los buceadores técnicos hemos adoptado la configuración de un latiguillo largo (2.10m) para el regulador que donaremos al compañero y así tener capacidad de poder navegar y movernos con comodidad sin depender de un latiguillo demasiado corto que dificultaría la maniobra en entornos complejos como puede ser en un pecio o una cueva.

TRIM Y FLOTABILIDAD

This is the ability to manipulate, during the dive, the valves of the cylinders that the diver will use during this type of training, establishing an emergency protocol in case of loss of gas. There are other key factors such as the comfort of the harness, the tightness of the dry suit, the position of the diver's body, the technique when trying to reach the valve and even the assembly of the cylinder with the back plate and your instructor will know how to pick up on and correct this for proper execution of the exercise.

S-DRILL

The 's-drill' is the exercise of sharing gas with your partner. It is a procedure that represents an emergency in a real life situation and requires being done correctly, quickly and effectively.

Technical divers have adopted the configuration of a long hose (2.10m) for the regulator which we will give to the partner which allows for the capacity to navigate and move comfortably without having to depend on too short a hose that would hinder the maneuver in complex environments such as in a wreck or cave.

TRIM AND BUOYANCY

A menudo se confunden estos dos conceptos completamente diferentes. El ‘trim’ hace referencia a la posición del cuerpo, mientras que la flotabilidad se refiere a la ingravidez total que un buen buceador debe ser capaz de demostrar en el agua. La famosa posición del ‘buda’ que algunos han practicado durante su curso de Open Water es un claro ejemplo de flotabilidad perfecta y el peor ‘trim’, puesto que no es posible bucear en esta posición, hacer el buda es chulo pero no vale para nada.

These two completely different concepts are often confused. The 'trim' refers to the position of the body, while the buoyancy refers to the total weightlessness that a good diver must be able to demonstrate in the water. The popular 'buddha' position that some people do during their Open Water Course is a clear example of perfect buoyancy and the worst 'trim' since it is impossible to dive in this position, so doing the buddha may be cool but is basically useless.

Soy buceador. Esto no es una profesión ni nada por el estilo, es más bien un estado mental del que soy plenamente consciente solamente ahora. Me he dado cuenta tras algo más de 4 años de lucha por recuperarme, durante los cuales el submarinismo ha sido sin duda alguna el gran protagonista.

CÓMO OCURRIÓ

The biggest and highest branch of a dead tree fell with such misfortune that it struck me on the neck. From there, the lights went out. After the loss of consciousness the first reaction was to rid myself of the pressure that the tree exerted on me, but nothing happened. Nothing worked, only my right hand responded to what I told it to.

A huge sense of helplessness ran through my mind and my own voice told me; "This time you have really messed up my friend".

Ya he pasado los 50, y los 55 también. Buceador desde hace unos 25 años, instructor PADI desde el año 2001. También he sido practicante de cualquier deporte que se me pusiese a tiro. Hasta que llegó el día en el que todo eso se acabó de repente.

La rama mayor y más alta de un árbol muerto cayó con tan mala fortuna que me alcanzó en las cervicales. Ahí se me apagó la luz. Tras la perdida de conocimiento la primera reacción fue la de querer zafarme de la presa que ejercía el árbol sobre mi, pero no sucedió nada. Nada funcionaba, solo mi mano derecha respondía a lo que le ordenaba. Una enorme sensación de impotencia recorrió mi mente y mi propia voz me decía; “ esta vez sí que la has fastidiado compañero”.

EL ESPACIO EN BLANCO

Hubo que esperar a los bomberos ya que la primera asistencia en llegar no podía mover la rama. Millones de ideas y pensamientos raros, empezaron a recorrer mi cabeza chocando entre ellos en multitud de ocasiones. Que si ¿qué voy a hacer ahora?, ¿cómo puede ser?, ¡esto es un desastre!, ¿no quiero vivir así?, son una muestra pequeña de lo que uno se imagina. Las emociones que surgen son demoledoras, angustia, miedo, rabia, culpa, y culminan con ganas de llorar rezando para que se acabe la pesadilla.

HOW IT HAPPENED

THE BLANK SPACE

We had to wait for the firemen as the first aid that arrived couldn´t move the branch.

Millions of ideas and weird thoughts started to run through my head, colliding over and over with eachother.

What am I going to do now? How can this be? This is a disaster! I don´t want to live like this! This is a small taste of what one imagines. The emotions that arise are of devastation, anguish, fear, anger, guilt, and culminate in the desire to cry, praying that the nightmare be over.

NOBODY KNOWS HOW NOR WHY THE DRIVE FUNCTIONS RETURNED EN EL HOSPITAL

Lo que más preocupaba a los médicos era la ausencia de dolor, no pintaba nada bien. Las radiografías iniciales no revelaron ninguna fractura, ¡no tenía nada roto!

Cualquier vértebra de esa zona que se hubiese quebrado habría provocado una parálisis de la respiración y…ya está.

Nadie sabe cómo ni por qué, las funciones motrices volvieron a aparecer, “recuperación espontánea” dijeron los médicos. Y empezaron las pruebas que duran horas. Diagnóstico, lesión medular y aprisionamiento de la médula a la altura de C2, C3, C4, C5. El pronostico fue muy sencillo, la doctora especialista en raquis me dijo algo parecido a “operamos o silla de ruedas”.

Estaba con grandes dificultades para desplazarme y mi lado izquierdo carecía de sensibilidad, la cual no he recuperado actualmente ni recuperaré nunca. O sea, un panorama que solo podía ir a peor.

Así que la respuesta fue “operamos”. Una intervención cualificada de alto riesgo cuyo objetivo no era solventar sino no empeorar, había que romper parte de las vértebras para liberar la medula.

POST OPERATORIO

Fue un año con cuatro operaciones, dos de raquis y dos de caderas.

AT THE HOSPITAL

What worried doctors the most was the absence of pain, this didn´t look good at all.

The initial X-rays didn´t reveal any fractures, I had nothing broken! Any broken vertebra in that area would have caused a paralysis of breathing and ... that would have been it.

No one knows how or why, but the motor functions began to reappear, "spontaneous recovery" the doctors called it. And so began the tests that take hours. Diagnosis: Medullary lesion and pinching of the cord at C2, C3, C4, C5. The prognosis was very straightforward, the doctor specializing in rachis told me something like "we operate or the wheelchair". I had great difficulty in moving and my left side lacked feeling, which I haven´t recovered nor will I ever recover. In other words, a scenario that could only get worse. So the answer became "let´s operate." A high risk intervention whose aim was not to solve but rather prevent worsening, we had to break part of the vertebrae in order to free the cord.

POST OPERATION

It was a year of four operations, two spine and two hip. The hips were a consequence of inactivity, what you don´t use breaks down.

r a un crucero puede ser el viaje de tu vida o un camino hacia la obesidad. Por un lado te da la oportunidad de desconectar de tu día a día, el estrés, el trabajo y todos tus problemas. Por otro lado, enfrentados con la libertad total, la gran mayoría de nosotros tenemos cierta tendencia a volvernos locos, sobre todo cuando nos encontramos con la comida tan rica y deliciosa que hay en los cruceros.

A ver, vamos a ser sinceros: ¿A quién le apetece comer

brócoli hervido y pechuga de pollo a la plancha sin nada, cuando hay gambas en tempura, patatas fritas y mai tais esperándonos?

La cuestión es: ¿Hace falta comprar fat pants, es decir, pantalones 2 tallas más grandes antes del embarque, para ponérnoslos a la vuelta? ¡Qué horror!

La respuesta es un gran NO, siempre y cuando sigas esta guía sencilla y práctica que hemos preparado.

oing on a cruise can either be the trip of your life or the path towards obesity.

On one hand it allows you the opportunity to disconnect from your day to day, from stress, work (and your boss;-)), and all of your problems. On the other however, faced with complete freedom, the vast majority of us have the tendency to go a little bit crazy, especially when we find ourselves up close and personal with the rich and delicious culinary delights often available on cruises.

VERDURA

Sí, sí, tu madre tenía razón cuando eras niño y sigue teniendo razón ahora. ¡Qué rabia! Si quieres mantenerte bien en forma, no hay más remedio, hay que comer verdura. Pero antes de poner cara de asco e insistir en que no te gusta, piensa en esto: Hay más de 500 variedades de verdura. Es imposible que no te guste ni un solo tipo. Además, en los cruceros hay mil maneras de cocinarlas, y muchas veces son más sabrosas que las que cocinas en casa.

No queremos ofender a nadie en casa, ni mucho menos al cocinero/a, pero hervirlas así, tal cual, no es la única opción.

Se pueden saltear con especias diferentes en un wok, meterlas en el horno o hacerlas a la parrilla, llenarlas con arroz y carne (¡¿qué rico no?!), añadirlas a un estofado, asarlas en la barbacoa....

Vuélvete loco con las ensaladas verdes, mixtas y César. Y con las verduras lo mismo: elige entre berenjena, calabacín, pimiento, brócoli, zanahoria, judías verdes, espárragos, coliflor, cebolla, puerros, champiñones, espinacas y bok choy. Tienes muchas opciones aquí. Si realmente las odias, las sopas de verdura son una buena opción.

¡NO ESTO!

Cualquier verdura que lleva tempura en el nombre. Es algo disfrazado de verdura pero en realidad no lo es y representa un infarto.

Sorry. Da igual que sea brócoli. ¡Fuera!

LAS CLAVES

Ojo con las salsas, sobre todo las salsas americanas tipo blue cheese, thousand island y caesar. ¿Por qué? Las salsas llevan una cantidad de azúcar, calorías y porquerías bes-

tial. Una ensalada César con su salsa por ejemplo, puede convertirla en una comida ¡mucho peor que un Big Mac & fries! ¿Qué dices?

te de oliva de todo la vida y balsámico para aliñar. Echa 1-1,5 cucharadas de aceite de oliva y la cantidad de balsámico que quieras encima.

VEGETABLES

Yes yes, your mother was right when you were a child and she´s still right now. How annoying! If you want to stay in shape, there´s no other option: Eat your vegetables! But wipe that look of disgust off your face and before you insist on telling us that you don´t like them, think about this: There are 500 or more varieties of vegetables. It´s impossible that you don´t like even one. Not to mention the fact that on cruises, there are a million ways to cook them, and many times they are tastier and more flavorful than how you cook them at home.

We don´t want to insult anyone at home much less the chef, but just boiling them is not the only option.

You can stir-fry these bad boys in different spices in a wok, throw them in the oven or pop them on the grill, fill them with rice or meat (tasty no?!!), add them to a stew, or put them on a bbq...

EAT THIS!

Go crazy with the green and caesar salads. Same with the veggies: Choose between eggplant, zucchini, pepper, broccoli, carrots, green beans, asparagus, cauliflower, onions, leeks, mushrooms, spinach, bok choy. You have so many options here. If you really do hate them, soups and purees can be a nice alternative.

NOT THAT!

Any vegetable that carries ¨tempura¨ in its name. It´s disguised as a vegetable but really it isn´t and represents a heart attack. Sorry.

Doesn´t matter if it is broccoli. Get rid of it!

KEY TIP

Be careful with the salad dressings, especially the American kinds such as blue cheese, thousand island and caesar.

Why? These dressings are little more than a sugar, calo-

rie and god knows what else bomb. A caesar salad with its dressing can actually be much worse than a Big Mac and fries. True story.

Ask for olive oil and balsamic vinegar. 1-1.5 table-

spoons of olive oil is more than enough and as much balsamic vinegar as you like.

Fill 40% of your plate with vegetables and / or salad.

If you manage to reach 30% that´s great!

ALCOHOL

Antes de nada todos somos adultos aquí. A la gran mayoría de nosotros nos gusta disfrutar de un buen vinito o una cerveza bien fría y bien merecida después de un par de inmersiones. ¿Verdad?

Entonces, para evitar los kilos de más,¿qué tienes que hacer? ¡¡¿No beber NADA?!! Si son vacaciones...¡vaya aburrimiento!

Tranquilo. ¡Que no cunda el pánico! Sí que se puede disfrutar del alcohol pero es necesario planear con antelación qué vas a tomar para minimizar el daño corporal. ¿Cómo? Pues escogiendo el alcohol con menos calorías por bebida.

¡BEBE ESTO!

Alcohol claro, por ejemplo vodka, ron, gin, tequila, triple sec, grappa, ouzo son las mejores opciones. Lo ideal es o mezclarlos con agua con gas, tónica, añadir hielo, o con una cola light, por ejemplo. ¿Por qué? El alcohol claro contiene alrededor de 70 calorías por ración, de ahí que el daño sea muy manejable.

¡NO ESTO!

Cócteles, como los mojitos, margaritas, martinis, san francisco´s, mai tai´s y cualquier bebida alcohólica que sabe demasiada buena. Evita también el vino blanco. Está lleno de azúcar que además de engordar, te deja con una resaca horrorosa. ¿Por qué? Pues porque muchos cócteles contienen más de 500 calorías por bebida y un montón de azúcar.

Después de 2 ó 3 cócteles ya habrás ingerido 1500 calorías. Para tener

una referencia, 1500 calorías son casi la cantidad de calorías que uno necesita en un día entero.

La cerveza está bien, con moderación.

1-2 cervezas es razonable, pero dado que cada una contiene 150 calorías, después de 4 ó 5 ya habrás bebido 600 o más calorías.

Si sigues este ritmo ¡no podrás pasar por las puertas del crucero para volver a casa después de 10 días! ¡Se te ha advertido!

LAS CLAVES

Antes de irte, decide la cantidad de alcohol que vas a tomar cada día para no pasarte y engordar... y ¡sigue el plan!

Elige entre el alcohol y el postre. Por ejemplo, con la cena tomarás 2 copas de vino tinto y fruta en vez de pastel de chocolate. Así puedes controlar más el tema.

¡COME ESTO!

PROTEÍNA Tanto hablar de verdura, es lógico que pienses que queremos que te vuelvas vegano y te conviertas en un yoghi ¿Un poco de "om" con tu tofu? ¡Pues no! Si te gusta el tofu, genial, pero ente el pescado, la carne, el pollo y los huevos, aquí tienes opciones para morir. A diferencia de los carbohidratos, un exceso de los cuales provocan retención de líquidos, la proteína no tiene este efecto. Al contrario: una alimentación alta en proteína y verdura adelgaza.

La manera de cocinarla es importante. Es mejor pedir pollo o pescado a la plancha, al horno, o a la parrilla, ¡fritos fuera! ¿Y la carne?

La carne es buena siempre y cuando sean los cortes magros y sin la capa de grasa. De todos modos es mejor enfatizar pescado y los mariscos y no abusar demasiado del cerdo.

Lubina, salmón, sardinas, caballa, calamar, gambas, camarones, sepia, pulpo, merluza, atún, mejillones, berberechos, almejas. En cuanto a la carne roja, elige cordero, solomillo, solomillo de buey y bistec de res.

La pechuga de pollo siempre es buena y los huevos, sobre todo por la mañana, son una opción excelente.

¡NO ESTO!

Salchichas, tocino, butifarra, un exceso de jamón (lleva cantidades peligrosas de sal), calamar y/o gambas fritas o tempura de cualquier tipo. Los quesos blandos no caben en este plan, sorry.

Son una bomba de calorías y grasa. El único pescado que no es recomendable comer es pez espada porque lleva niveles tóxicos de mercurio (muchísimo peor que el atún).

LAS CLAVES

La proteína debería ocupar alrededor 30% del plato. O más. Mejor llenar el plato con proteína y verdura que con arroz por ejemplo.

ALCOHOL

Look, we´re all adults here. Most of us like to enjoy a nice glass of fine wine or an ice cold and well deserved beer after a couple of dives, no?

So in order to avoid the kilos, what do you have to do??

Not drink ANYTHING?!! But they´re holidays… how boring!!!!!!!

Relax. No need to panic here. You can enjoy alcohol but you need to have a plan ahead of time as to what you are going to drink to minimize the damage. How? By choosing alcohol with less calories per drink.

DRINK THIS!

Clear alcohol, for example vodka, rum, gin, tequila, triple sec, grappa and ouzo are among the best options. The ideal scenario would be to mix them with sparkling water, tonic, over ice or with a diet coke.

Why? Clear alcohol contains aroundabout 70 calories per serving, so the damage to your waistline is more manageable.

NOT THAT!

Avoid cocktails such as mojitos, margaritas, martinis, san francisco´s, mai tai´s and any drink that tastes too good to be true. Stay away from white wine. It´s full of sugar which in addition to making you fatter, leaves you with a nasty little hangover.

Why? Many cocktails contain upwards of 500 calories per drink and a ton of sugar. After 2 or 3 cocktails you will have drunk 1500 calories. As a point of reference, 1500 calories are almost

the full requirements of what someone would need to eat in an entire day...Of food.

And beer? Beer is fine in moderation.

1-2 beers is reasonable enough, but given the fact that each one contains 150 calories, after 4-5 you will have put away 600 or more calories.

If you continue with this sort of behavior you won´t be able to fit through the exit doors of the boat to head home after 10 days.

Don´t say we didn´t warn you!

KEY TIP

Before leaving, decide on the quantity of alcohol that you are going to drink each day to avoid overdoing it…and follow the plan!

Choose between alcohol and desert. For example, with dinner you might have 2 classes of red wine and fruit instead of chocolate cake. Doing this helps you take more control.

EAT THIS!

PROTEIN With all this talk of vegetables you probably think that we want you to turn vegan and become a yogi. A side of ¨ommmm¨ with your tofu?

No no! If you like tofu, great, but between fish, meat, chicken and eggs you won´t run out of options. Furthermore, a diet high in protein (and vegetables) actually helps you lose weight.

How the protein is cooked is important. It is better to ask for chicken or fish on the grill or in the oven. In other words… not fried!

And red meat? Red meat is fine as long as you choose leaner cuts and trim away the excess fat. In any case as a general rule it´s better to emphasize fish and shellfish and avoid crushing pork too much.

Sea bass, salmon, sardines, mackerel, squid, prawns, shrimp, cuttlefish, octopus, hake, tuna, mussels, cockles, clams. As for red meat, choose lamb, sirloin, beef tenderloin, and beef steak. Chicken breasts are always good and eggs, especially in the morning, are an excellent option.

NOT THAT!

Sausage, bacon, ham in excess (it contains dangerously high amounts of salt), fried squid and/or prawns or any kind of seafood tempura. Soft cheeses don´t make it into this plan, sorry. They´re an calorie and fat bomb.

The only fish that is off limits is swordfish as it contains toxic levels of mercury (much worse than tuna in fact).

KEY TIP

Aim for 30% protein with each meal. Or more. It´s better to fill the plate with protein and vegetables than say, rice.

CARBOHIDRATOS

¡COME ESTO!

Arroz integral o salvaje, garbanzos, lentejas, boniato, quinoa, pan integral o pasta integral. Fruta.

¿Y el arroz? ¿La pasta? ¿Las patatas? ¿Y el pan, ¡por Dios!? ¿Dónde están?

Tranquilo, puedes disfrutar de un buen plato de pasta. Sin embargo, la clave aquí es la cantidad. Un exceso de carbohidratos (el pan, el arroz, la pasta, la pizza, las legumbres) significa una subida de peso y más retención de líquidos. ¿El resultado? Un aspecto fofo e hinchado.

¡NO ESTO!

El arroz blanco, patata blanca, patatas fritas, pan blanco, pasta blanca, croissants, magdalenas, galletas. Por la mañana evita las cajitas de cereales por ejemplo Coco Pops, Corn Puffs, Corn Flakes e incluso el muesli. Suena muy sano... pero no lo es.

Huye de los pancakes y waffles. No suelen ser muy buenos para marcar abdominales.

Sin embargo, no todos los carbohidratos son iguales. La calidad es lo que nos importa.

POSTRES

No hace falta ser nutricionista para saber que es mejor evitar los postres.

A partir de ahora, sabrás cuáles son las mejores opciones para ti, no solo para el crucero sino para tu día a día.

Al fin y al cabo, son vacaciones y hay que disfrutar de ellas. Sin embargo, hay un punto en que es necesario decir ¡basta!, y elegir qué te

Para evitar kilos extra en el crucero, piensa en comer 30% de carbohidratos máximo en cada plato. Por lo que tenemos un plato con la siguiente fórmula:

40% verduras 30% proteína 30% carbohidratos.

40-30-30. ¡Fácil de recordar!

LAS CLAVES

Sin embargo, el postre tampoco significa una bomba de chocolate, cheesecake o crème brulée. Si quieres una opción más ligera, la fruta y/o un yogur siempre es una buena alternativa. Elige entre melón, sandía, fruta fresca de temporada, frutas del bosque, ensalada de fruta mezclada con yogur...Si no tienen en el menú, simplemente pídeselo al camarero. ¡Estará encantado!

apetece disfrutar más; el vino o la pasta, el postre o la cerveza, los pancakes por la mañana o patatas fritas por la tarde.

Con un poquito de moderación, estrategia y, es cierto, disciplina, volverás no solo igual sino mejor que antes! n

CARBOHYDRATES

EAT THIS!

Integral or wild rice, garbanzo beans, lentils, sweet potato, quinoa, whole wheat bread or wholewheat pasta. Fruit.

And the rice? The pasta? The potatoes? The bread for the love of god?!

Where are they??!

Relax, you can enjoy a nice plate of pasta. However, the key here is quantity. An excess of carbohydrates (everything that is bread, rice, pasta, pizza, legumes) means more weight gain and more water retention. The result? A bloated and doughy you.

NOT THAT!

White rice, white potatoes, french fries, white bread, white pasta, croissants, muffins, cookies or biscuits. In the morning avoid those little cereal boxes such as Coco Pops, Corn Puffs, Corn Flakes and even muesli. It sounds healthy but it´s not!
