Chances are, if you’re a craft beer drinker in northwestern Michigan, you’ve noticed Rainmaker Ale from Stormcloud Brewing Co. on tap at local watering holes or displayed in distinctive black-and-orange cans on the shelves of grocers and party stores. The Belgian-style ale’s visibility (and availability) throughout western and northern Michigan is a sure sign of success for the Frankfort-based brewing company, which began operations five years ago on Main Street, just two blocks from Lake Michigan. “We are humbled by the success we’ve had since we opened,” says Rick Schmitt, who cofounded the brewery with Brian Confer. “We are so appreciative of the support the community has provided Stormcloud. We are a couple of years ahead of where we thought we would be or perhaps where we could be.” Since its opening, Stormcloud Brewing Co., has become a staple on Frankfort’s Main Street, drawing locals and tourists alike with its distinctive menu and Belgian-inspired ales. Its beer offerings include the traditional Dubbel, Tripel and Strong Ales, along with classic beer styles such as Blondes, Pale Ales, IPAs, Porters, and Stouts. The fledgling company expanded its footprint in the coastal town this past year with the opening of a 12,759-square-foot warehouse, production facility and tasting room, just a mile east of its Main Street pub. With expanded production capacity, Stormcloud has been able to grow its keg beer distribution to the greater Grand Rapids area. Its Michigan footprint now includes 32 counties in the Lower Peninsula. As of July, Rainmaker Ale and Whiled Away IPA, a Belgian-style IPA, are available in six packs of 12-ounce cans in 24 counties.

Schmitt’s role in Stormcloud was happenstance. He and Confer met at Crystal Mountain Resort, where Schmitt was vice president of sales and marketing. Confer, a commercial photographer, was frequently hired by the resort. Somewhere along the line, he asked Schmitt to review his business plan for a brewery in Frankfort. “At one point, I asked him if he would be interested in a business partner. And here I am,” recalls Schmitt, who hails from Colorado and does possess an affinity for beer. “It was purely an entrepreneurial opportunity. If you had asked me seven years ago if my dream was to have a microbrewery, it would not have been on my list.” Confer, who grew up in the Saginaw area, began brewing from home in 2010 and had been working on Rainmaker Ale, the company’s signature beer, for three years, when the brewery opened in 2013. The beer is served both at the pub and the taproom. “It’s our flagship beer,” Schmitt says. “It’s an easy-drinking beer—not too malty, not too hoppy. It has great balance and pairs well with food, which is a Belgian thing.” Rainmaker Ale, by the way, won a bronze medal two years ago at Denver’s Great American Beer Festival, “the Olympics of beers,” Schmitt notes. What’s in Stormcloud’s future? “The beer industry in Michigan and the entire country is incredibly competitive and crowded,” Schmitt says. “We have to put out a really good product to drive business. If we never get out of Michigan, our business model works and we’re happy.”

Every Monday Doris Loll plays cards at The Gathering Place, the senior center run by Benzie Senior Resources, in downtown Honor. On Wednesdays, she’s there stretching, bending and doing her best to maintain agility at age 90. Other days of the week, Loll receives home-delivered meals from Benzie Senior Resources, and also help in other areas, including lawn care, snow removal, window washing and house cleaning. “It’s a wonderful resource,” says Loll, a retired nurse who once led the Wednesday morning exercise class that still bears her name, Stretch with Doris. “You should see the amount of people who come in for meals. I’ll be there playing cards and they just pour in. There’s really something there for everyone.” Loll is one of hundreds of Benzie County seniors taking advantage of the services offered by Benzie Senior Resources. Nearly one-third of Benzie’s senior population—or 1,763 residents—tapped the organization for some sort of assistance in fiscal 2018. Thirty-three percent of the county’s population is 60 and older. “We’re serving people from 60 to 100 plus—that’s a 40-year stretch. We’re trying to tailor to the needs of that large demographic,” says Doug Durand, the organization’s executive director. “We’re an aging society, and the needs in each age group (each decade of aging) are so different. People tend to need additional services as they get older.” Benzie Senior Resources is the result of the marriage of the Benzie Council on Aging and Benzie Home Health Care in 2016. That merger created one umbrella group offering seniors a multitude of services under one roof. The services offered by Benzie Senior Resources run the gamut and fall under five main categories: home services, health and safety, meals and food, social connections, and support services. In a nutshell, the organization offers almost everything under the sun, from home-delivered meals and home health care to medication management and medical equipment loans to social activities. Since the merger, the organization has seen a spike in demand for services. In the last three years, most programs have experienced 50 to 75 percent growth, he says. “The publicity from the merger created more awareness in the community, even though we’ve been around one way or another for 40 years or more,” he says. Helping the center serve the senior community are 30 employees, 17 contractors (those hired to plow snow, mow, light duty homemaking) and an army of 151 volunteers. “The volunteers are mainly seniors,” Durand notes. “The senior group brings phenomenal resources of their own to the community. They’re active and they want to stay active. They’re a very vibrant group that brings a lot of economic activity to the community.”

WHY CHAMBERS GET INVOLVED The policy arena can be a contentious world on occasion. Every now and then we will hear a question aloud about why the Chamber would take a policy position on a legislative or local policy issue. With hundreds of individual business members - which means hundreds of individual opinions - the question is a good one. Someone is bound to disagree, so why take on that risk? As Chambers of Commerce, we engage in this arena because the business community needs an advocate, and if Chambers won’t do it, no one will do it for us. The Benzie County Chamber of Commerce has accepted that charge and has taken on this leadership position as an advocate for this area. It is an active member of the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance, a partnership of over a dozen Chambers and economic development organizations around northern Michigan and the U.P. that work together on state and federal policy issues that impact the northern Michigan business community. Separately, we are all small, rural Chambers of Commerce. Together, the Chamber Alliance is one of the largest business partnerships in the state of Michigan, representing over 8,000 individual members. We are striving to increase our impact and our influence in Lansing and Washington, DC by focusing on issues critical to rural businesses and communities. In that past year alone, we’ve worked together to: • Stop a bill that would have cost northern Michigan dock and trucking jobs, and could have led to an increase in winter road salt costs. • Insert an amendment in the state budget that will allow more rural friendly competitive robotics program in schools, plus an additional $500,000 for competitive robotics grants to schools. Many small northern Michigan districts are already taking advantage of this win this fall, and we will see the impact of this in STEM fields for years to come. • Make multiple, significant amendments to a bill creating a transformational brownfield program so it would allow northern Michigan communities to participate. • Stop a bill that would have prevented local units of government from providing high-speed internet - a critical, yet hard to come by commodity in rural areas. • Secure key votes to amend troubling bills that raised the state’s minimum wage, removed the popular credit for tip earners, and mandated employers to require paid sick leave. • Create a platform of policy changes to address solutions to northern Michigan’s workforce housing, childcare, and talent shortage issues. We are proud to work alongside so many Chambers and other business associations that get involved in the nitty gritty arena of public policy work. The Chamber Alliance will continue to lead with a strong voice on issues that impact rural business and the economy in our region. Paul Oliver Memorial: Hometown Hospital Expertise Nestled on the shore of Lake Michigan for more than 60 years, Munson Healthcare Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital is a proven haven for quality health care when residents and visitors need it most. A continuing strategic focus by hospital leadership allows Paul Oliver to adapt to a changing health care environment. “We have been very thoughtful about the ways we can support a healthy and thriving community and have developed strong collaborations with physicians and other facilities within Munson Healthcare to provide high quality services in Frankfort,” said Peter Marinoff, president of Paul Oliver. The hospital’s Emergency Department consistently sees patient satisfaction scores in the 95th percentile and recently received a Level IV Trauma Care designation. This designation means there is 24-hour coverage by a physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner, a surgeon is available and present when needed, and all emergency Department clinical staff are certified in trauma care. With short wait times and the majority of visits taking less than 2.5 hours, patients are able to get the emergent care they need quickly and closer to home. The unit is led by Chief Nursing Officer Kristi Johnson, MSN, R.N., who came to the hospital after several years leading Munson Medical Center’s Level II Trauma Care facility. Another goal has been to enhance and improve access to inpatient hospital care at Paul Oliver, helping to reduce transfers to other facilities when patient care can be effectively managed locally. Patients are able to stay closer to home for care, and it makes it easier for family support. Collaboration with local primary care providers has allowed the hospital to support and enhance recruitment of primary and family care physicians and providers. . “Our efforts have resulted in additional coverage in the Empire community and we continue to focus on building and supporting a robust primary care physician network,” Marinoff said. More physicians

and providers means better access to care for Benzie County residents, and also gives residents the opportunity to develop ongoing relationships with their provider. Efforts in 2018 also brought Matthew Jackson, M.D., as the new medical director of sports medicine and medical director for the Emergency Department at the hospital. Chief of Medical Staff Nancy Reye, M.D., also recently moved her practice to Benzie County and is sharing her expertise with Benzie County and Frankfort residents. Additionally, the hospital has successfully collaborated to increase the number of specialty providers and clinics at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital. Currently, Benzie County residents can see physicians who specialize in cardiology for heart care; gastroenterology for stomach and digestive disorders; ophthalmology for eye care and treatment of eye conditions; orthopedics for treatment of bone and muscle disorders; and physical medicine and rehabilitation to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life for people with physical impairments or disabilities. The hospital also offers podiatry for treatment of foot and ankle conditions. All these additional specialty clinics mean that Benzie residents will be able to see a specialist at the hospital and stay close to home. As the needs of the community change, the 5-Star Paul Oliver Living & Rehab Unit also is adapting. Staff are seeing more patients requiring skilled care post-surgery, or following a medical event such as heart attack or stroke. Taking on more medically complex patients means providing rehabilitation, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech language therapy, in addition to advanced services such as lymphedema, wound care, and hand therapy, to name a few . A planned remodel of the unit will feature more private rooms with views of the lake and updated dining and common space for residents. Stellar Schools Start with Community If it takes a village to raise a child, rest assured the communities of Benzie County’s two school districts are shouldering their part. “I think one of the biggest achievements we have is the pride our community has in our school system,” says Jeff Tousley, superintendent of Frankfort-Elberta Area Schools. “I think if we are ever in need of something, the community is there. A civic organization will always step up to help. As a small school district, we have the advantage of knowing the needs of our students and the resources that are out there to help them.” As a case in point, he notes a few years ago that residents in the FrankfortElberta district approved a millage that placed laptops in the hands of all students beyond second grade. The community is especially important in a school district with just 500-plus students. “We are really small. There are positives and negatives to being this small. One of the positives is that we know our students and the families really well and we know how we can support them,” Tousley says. Community and academic support have helped students score well on many assessments. With smaller-than-average class sizes—the average elementary classroom has 20 or fewer students—teachers and staff can focus on student needs. Teachers, Tousley says, help make the district click. “Our teachers really have a vested interest in our students. Every classroom. Every student. Every day. That’s the mantra we try to live by,” Tousley says. “It summarizes everything we are trying to do for our kids.”It’s a similar story in Benzie County Central Schools, the county’s other school district. Like Frankfort-Elberta Area Schools, Benzie County Central is wellconnected to the community, including businesses, non-profit clubs and

organizations. “They’re connected to us at a deep level and in meaningful ways,” says Matt Olson, superintendent of the school district. “For example, all of our seventh-graders put in a community day of service, a serviceabove-self day. They weed community gardens, sweep streets, take down stuff from winter, dust, paint, all sorts of things. It’s a great experience for them and a great example of a partnership.” There’s no less importance placed on academics in the 1,200-student district. Academically, we’ve got some really strong things happening,” Olson notes. “We have more Advanced Placement classes than other schools in the region, even schools much larger than we are. It’s not just the fact that we have the classes, our achievements in these classes are remarkable.” As an example, he points out that over 80 percent of students in AP Biology scored at the highest levels on the AP exam. Benzie Central High School earned a silver medal rating from =U.S. News and World Report=; and the Michigan Department of Education cited Benzie Central among the Top 25 districts that are “beating the odds.” The district also has its own motto: #OneBENZIE. It’s more than just a social media hashtag. It’s a rallying cry to unify students and the community. “We gave all our kids T-shirts so they can show a sense of pride at athletic events and other events,” Olson says. “We’ve got this mantra, #OneBENZIE and we’ve been rallying as a school community around a sense of unified purpose. We as a district are really focusing on a unified sense of purpose.”

Northwestern Michigan College At NMC, you can earn a degree or certificate in more than 80 academic programs, from accounting to welding. Annually, more than 50,000 learners visit four Traverse City campuses for a credit or non-credit class, professional training and development, or to see an exhibition at the Dennos Museum Center. A Rich History of Commerce

HUNTING AND FISHING

The area that now comprises Benzie County was originally pure wilderness—a region ripe for hunting and fishing, which the first people here, the Odawa, tapped into, creating the first economic force in this area. When Europeans arrived, they took advantage of the wild bounty, too, trapping and trading across the land. Over time, commercial fishing for species like whitefish and lake trout took hold and became the first steady industry in Benzie County. Of course, recreational hunting and fishing became a huge attraction; hunting for passenger pigeons in Benzie was advertised in newspapers nationwide, and the first Coho salmon ever to swim in Michigan were planted (with recreational anglers in mind) in the Platte River near Honor.

LUMBER

The first logging that took place in Benzie happened near Herring Lake— but the logger, a man named Harrison Averill, didn’t exactly follow legit business practices. Averill was known as a “timber pirate,” illegally felling pines on government-owned land. In the mid-1800’s he established a sawmill on a creek near Lower Herring, and more logging soon followed, with the pines going first and the hardwood going next. When railroads sprang up to transport the lumber, towns began popping up along the rail lines—including a log-loading point named Crystal City, which soon after was renamed to Beulah. When the timber was exhausted many of these lumber-boom villages slipped away into ghost towns, but a few survived and grew—including Honor, Thompsonville and Lake Ann. EDUCATION

In 1858, a group of parishioners from an Ohio church followed the Reverend Charles E. Bailey north to the wilds of Benzie County, where they established an educational Christian colony named Benzonia. Thirteen students attended their school’s first classes, held in 1860; by 1875 enrollment had reached 150. Benzonia was officially incorporated as a village 16 years later, and though the academy closed its doors in the early part of the 20th century, one of its dormitories lives on today as the Mills Community House, home to the Benzonia Public Library.

Benzie’s woods and waters are not only a source of beauty but an economic boon as well—and that’s been the case for as long as humans have found themselves here. Most of the county’s cornerstone industries were first rooted in the land—both managed and wild—well before Michigan was even declared a state, creating legacies that still last today. With guidance from the team at the Benzie Area Historical Museum, here’s a look at some of the region’s first industries that had—and continue to have—a significant impact on Benzie’s story.

FARMING

The Odawa were the first to farm this land, though the first significant agricultural push came with the Homestead Acts of the mid to late 1800’s, which brought a little flurry of farming families to the region. Orchardists began making their mark here, and the world took notice: In 1904 Benzie received a gold medal for fruit production at St. Louis World’s Fair. The presence of railroads encouraged expansion of fruit production and fruit packing, but locals lent a hand in growth, too: In particular, a horticulturist named Paul Rose, who had moved to Elberta with his wife, Edith, around 1890, was instrumental in changing fruit packing and farming methods here.

TOURISM

Leisure-seeking in Benzie’s beautiful scenery dates back to the 19th century, though at first it was limited by lack of transportation options. But with the advent of passenger rail and ferries, so too came the advent of tourism, with folks beckoned northward by stately inns and sandy beaches along Lake Michigan and Crystal Lake. (An interesting hiccup for the history books: Crystal’s famed beaches were actually formed through folly when construction of a man-made channel accidentally lowered the lake’s water levels by 20 feet). In 1902, the Ann Arbor Railroad opened a three-story hotel in Frankfort that rivaled Mackinac Island’s famed Grand Hotel—it was called the Royal Frontenac, and it had been built for the express purpose of promoting the region’s beauty. The Frontenac tragically burned to the ground in a fire just 10 years after its construction, but by then it had helped the area cement its reputation as a vacation paradise—a legacy that happily lives on.

Celebrating 20 years marketing Benzie County, the Benzie County Area Convention & Visitors Bureau’s (CVB) went through a rebranding during 2018 and is now “Make It Benzie”. Their mission remains the same, to promote Benzie County as a tourism destination utilizing the funds collected through State of Michigan Legislation (PA59 of 1984), which allows for up to a 5% (currently 2% in Benzie County) assessment to be collected from overnight visitors staying in one of the CVB’s 24 lodging property members. The ongoing efforts that are part of the rebranding include a new website, new social media plan, photography, video and updating of all of the organizations current marketing. This includes print and electronic ads, television and radio commercials along with other items that require updating due to the name change. The process of rebranding began in the fall of 2017 with a visioning session with lodging property members, board members, staff, key community marketers and vendor stakeholders. The process is being facilitated by Greenlight Marketing, based in Traverse City, Michigan. Using a local company was important to the CVB as they are staffed by locals who really understand Benzie County. During the processes several new brand names and taglines were vetted with the final selection of “Make It Benzie” for the name and new tagline “We are Northern Michigan”. Once the name and tagline was determined, it was time to select designs and colors for the new logo. You can see by the image above that water plays an important role in our marketing and our name. A winter version of the logo has also been created with the splashes over the “i” replaced with snowflakes. The logo images are also being animated for use in television commercials and online marketing opportunities such as social media and websites. The CVB services all areas related to tourism, including leisure, business, events and group travel. What does this mean to our local economy? Well over $25 million annually, according to conservative estimates based only on visitors that spend the night in a CVB-member lodging property. If you consider visitors who also stay with family and friends, camp, and stay at other lodging properties in the County or nearby communities, or just visit for the day, that impact amount is easily four or more times that amount. One of the most important and successful partnerships is the joint operating agreement between the Benzie County CVB and the Benzie County Chamber of Commerce. Not only is this a fiscally sound partnership for both organizations, but it also benefits our members and provides them additional opportunities.
