fabulous beaches OF SOUTHERN SLEEPING BEAR Escape to these secluded stretches of sand and waves tucked away in the 10,000 acres of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore that line the Benzie County shoreline. BY EVAN PERRY

AKA Otter Creek Beach, this beach is near the mouth of Otter Creek, which gently empties into Lake Michigan. The creek’s shallow water is ideal for splash-happy kids and great for little adventurers who choose to wade upriver and into the belly of the forest. Find plenty of sand to park the cooler and beach chairs. From Empire, drive south on M-22 and turn right onto Esch Road. Unpaved parking, basic facilities. Road to Esch will be closed for a bit this summer, though the goal is to finish construction before "peak summer." Beachgoers are advised to seek alternate beach during construction. 106

PETERSON ROAD BEACH

Splitting Esch Road and Platte River Point, Peterson Road beach offers plenty of sand, a grandstand of beach grass and a bounty of elbow room. Just east of Platte River Campground, turn off M-22 onto the unpaved (and narrow) Peterson Road and follow it to Lake Michigan. Unpaved parking, basic facilities, short walk to the beach.

PLATTE RIVER POINT BEACH

Find this beauty down the road from the Platte River Campground at the mouth of the Platte River. This finish line for Platte River tubers and rowers means a bustling parking lot, but you’re a short walk away from bathing in the shallows of the river or taking a plunge into Lake Michigan. Perfect for kids, and views of the Empire Bluffs certainly don’t hurt. Take Lake Michigan Road off M-22 near Platte Lake; drive straight to Lake Michigan. Paved parking, picnic tables, basic facilities.

Platte River Point Beach TIESMA ROAD BEACH

Trek to Tiesma if you are seeking seclusion. The beach is along the same strip of shoreline as Platte River Point and Peterson Road, yet it is unmarked and under the radar. From Platte River Campground, take Lake Michigan Road north, turn right on Isle View Drive and drive till the road ends. Short walk to the beach through soft sand. No facilities, dirt road parking.

Park passes are required at all beaches within the National Lakeshore. Buy a pass online or at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire. nps.gov/slbe

The viewers of Good Morning America chose it as “The Most Beautiful Place in America”. It features sandy beaches, sparkling waters, and towering dunes, preserved and protected by the National Park Service. Others claim to be close to it. We don’t. It surrounds us. So, save the driving ... vacation here and stay here.

Paddle into Northwoods’ splendor on any or all of these four rivers. BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS

BETSIE RIVER

This spunky, twisting, churning river isn’t for beginners or even intermediate paddlers. But if you’re an experienced paddler, this is your river. The Betsie’s navigable waters start at Grass Lake State Forest Campground in Thompsonville and the river empties into Lake Michigan’s Betsie Bay in Frankfort. OUTFITTERS: Betsie River Canoes and Campground, facebook.com/brcanoesandcampground; Vacation Trailer Park, vacationtrailer.com

PINE RIVER

A federally designated Wild and Scenic River, the Pine is the fastest river in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Winding through a deep, forested valley carved eons ago by glaciers, the Pine River is your next great adventure. OUTFITTERS: Pine River Paddlesports Center and Campground, thepineriver.com; Horina Canoe & Kayak Rental, horinasprcanoe.com

PLATTE RIVER

From the swift, chilly waters of the Upper Platte to the warm, slo-mo Lower Platte, this 29-mile-long river is made for paddling and floating fun. Arriving at the river mouth on Lake Michigan’s stunning Platte Bay is the trip’s grand finale. OUTFITTERS: Riverside Canoes in Honor, canoemichigan.com; The Honor Trading Post, canoeplatteriver.com

MANISTEE RIVER

Also a federally designated Wild and Scenic River, the Manistee begs for at least intermediate skills in the upper section, known as the Little Manistee. But downriver, where it becomes the Big Manistee, the slow current welcomes beginners and families, and frequent sandbars invite swim breaks. Tucked between Lake Michigan and Arcadia Lake, this town is about water sports and beach days. But don’t miss the nationally renowned Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club. Just north on M-22, pull over at Arcadia Overlook, the highest viewing area on the Lake Michigan shoreline, and make sure to work in a hike at the magnificent Arcadia Dunes. visitmanisteecounty.com

Rent a boat at Bear Lake Marine and spend the day on the gorgeous sandy-bottomed lake of the same name. Then find an old-fashioned country-store feeling at Wee Bee Jammin’ and get U-Pick organic berries at Ware Farm. bearlakemichigan.org

Brake on US-31 for margaritas at The Roadhouse Mexican Bar & Grill, stop for house-made ice cream at Hill Top Soda Shoppe, explore the fabulous Benzie Area Historical Museum and take on the fam at Crystal Falls Mini Golf. visitbenzie.com

The new Five Shores Brewing, a boutique-filled shopping district, a darling downtown beach on Crystal Lake, acclaimed golf courses nearby and Thursday evening Music in the Park concerts (June 24–August 12), make this a destination town. visitbenzie.com

CADILLAC

Blessed with lakes Mitchell and Cadillac, add a plethora of fabulous walking and biking trails; a bustling downtown home to boutiques, eateries and Clam Lake Beer Co.; a children’s splash pad and a renovated performing arts center. Cadillac pretty much has it all. cadillacmichigan.com

ELBERTA

PHOTOS BY MAE STIER

Find a bountiful farmers market (Thursdays, May–October) and stunning views of Betsie Bay and Lake Michigan—shhh, the beach here is a bestkept secret. Top off an Elberta day by dining outside at The Cabbage Shed or Mayfair Tavern. frankfort-elberta.com

FRANKFORT

Tucked near secluded sandy beaches in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Honor is bordered by the Platte River and home to classic Northwoods taverns including Platte River Inn and Lumberjacks Bar & Grill. Pick up BBQ from Jim’s Joint and head to the Cherry Bowl Drive-In Theatre. villageofhonor.org

Set on the shore of lovely Lake Ann, find an old-fashioned grocery store, the rocking Lake Ann Brewing Company (with a fab pizza place, The Stone Oven, next door) and a downtown beach. Hike or mountain bike the 5.8-mile Lake Ann Pathway. lakeann-mi.com

The car ferry S.S. Badger calls this Lake Michigan harbor town home—hop it to Wisconsin just for fun but come back to Ludington for the beaches, concerts in the park, Victorian-era shopping district, two historic lighthouses and groovy food. Plus, count ‘em, three craft breweries. pureludington.com

It’s all things Victorian, from history tours through this town’s lumber-era Victorian architecture to the annual Manistee Sleighbell Parade & Old Christmas Weekend. But it’s always fine to throw off your corset and dive into Lake Michigan at one of this city’s primo beaches, or belly up to its fabulous pubs, eateries or downtown’s North Channel Brewing Co. visitmanisteecounty.com

ONEKAMA

This idyllic, slow-mo coastal town has access to both Lake Michigan and Portage Lake. Golf The Heathlands, take in the outdoor Concerts in the Park on Monday evenings July through August and be sure to nose around for some cool finds at MacBeth & Co., a home decor shop. onekama.info

THOMPSONVILLE

Crystal Mountain, the hub of this rural township, is a top destination for snow sports and summer fun including the Crystal Coaster Alpine Slide. Off-campus, check out Thompsonville’s Up North-style taverns and the hip Iron Fish Distillery.

THINGS TO DO IN

Ludington State Park

Whether you want to hike, paddle or just lounge in the sun, the 5,300-acre Ludington State Park offers fun for everyone. BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS

Hike the three-mile Ridge Trail for spectacular views of the Big Sable Point Lighthouse and Lake Michigan.

Spread your towel on the wide sandy beach and break for treats at the Lake Michigan Beach House. Book one of the park’s three mini cabins. Cute as buttons, they sleep four and are outfitted with a microwave, mini-fridge, heaters, lights and an outdoor fire pit. Rent a pontoon at Hamlin Lake Boat Rentals to go tubing, fishing or lounge in the sun on Hamlin Lake. Throw a hook and line in at the Hamlin Dam.

Take in the view from 112-feet-up at the top of Big Sable Point Lighthouse. It’s worth the two-mile hike to get there. Note: COVID-19 restrictions may apply. Visit splka.org. Rent a canoe or kayak from Hamlin Lake Boat Rentals and paddle the fourmile canoe trail that skirts parts of Hamlin Lake that aren’t accessible on foot. Bonus: Time it so your paddle ends with the sunset. Rent a tube or paddleboard at Hamlin Lake Boat Rentals to float or paddle the Big Sable River to its mouth at Lake Michigan. SIP LIKE A LOCAL From Northwoods taverns to hip breweries and distilleries, this region is full of good spirits. BY CARLY SIMPSON

CRAFT BEVVIES

The newest brewery in the region, Five Shores, opened in January 2020 bringing award-winning brewmaster Oliver Roberts, formerly the head brewer at Wolverine State Brewing Co. in Ann Arbor, and business partner, Matt Demorest, to Beulah. The duo is serving up coastal vibes in the renovated Quonset-style building downtown with a robust list of craft beers, along with cider, wine, cocktails and shareable eats (the German-style pretzel is massive, and it’s coated with everything bagel seasoning, so it’s obviously delish). Five Shores is, of course, in good company, joining sudsy stalwarts such as Stormcloud Brewing Company in Frankfort, Jamesport and Ludington Bay brewing companies in Ludington, North Channel in Manistee, Clam Lake Beer Company in Cadillac and Lake Ann Brewing in Lake Ann. Each establishment has its own beer profile, but they all share conviviality, great live music and outdoor seating. For creative beers to go (think picnic or post-beach BBQ), swing by Starving Artist Brewing Co., a barn-turned-brewery in Ludington. With a designated driver, you can create your own mini wine and cider tour in the region. Here’s the lineup. Stop 1: Northern Natural Cider House & Winery in Kaleva, known for its USDA-certified organic ciders. Stop 2: Douglas Valley Winery in Manistee, where the tasting room is a renovated 1800s bunkhouse that was used by passengers on the Manistee and North-Eastern Railroad. Stop 3: Love Wines Winery in Ludington for a range of sweet to dry small-batch blends. Defying categories, St. Ambrose Cellars in Beulah's countryside, is a fun destination offering something for everyone—beer, wine, cider, mead, yard games and a food truck. Also tucked in the region’s countryside, Iron Fish Distillery in Thompsonville boasts farm-to-flask spirits, each handcrafted on the 120-acre farm surrounded by forest. Though Iron Fish is a bit off the beaten path, aka a scenic dirt road, it’s a must-visit food and entertainment hub for all ages.

THE CLASSICS

When the evening calls for laidback Up North vibes, make your way to these long-loved watering holes with kicked-up tavern food: Lumberjacks Bar & Grill in Honor (great weekly specials), Jodi’s Tangled Antler in Beulah (prime karaoke spot), The Painted Lady Saloon in Manistee (the town’s oldest operating bar) and Sportman’s Irish Pub in Ludington (traditional sports bar for when ya gotta catch a game).

TAKE A PRIVATE TOUR

The Magic Shuttle Bus offers a Best of Benzie County experience with stops at Lake Ann Brewing Co., St. Ambrose Cellars and Iron Fish Distillery. You'll learn how their products are crafted and tastings are encouraged. Tours generally last about six hours. magicshuttlebus.com Lakeshore Shuttle & Tours offers winery and brewery tours (along with fall color tours, golf outings and more) in the Benzie County area. LODGING FOR EVERYONE Your Up North getaway starts here. BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS

A ROOF OVER YOUR HEAD (AND SO MUCH MORE!)

This is a region of Up North cabins, Victorian-era bed and breakfasts and beautiful resorts. Ludington and Manistee are particularly known for their lumber-era mansions that have become inns and bed and breakfasts. Historic resorts include Watervale Inn (watervaleinn.com) in Arcadia and Portage Point Resort (portagepointresort.com) in Onekama. Find thoroughly modern digs at Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club in Arcadia (arcadiabluffs.com), Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville (crystalmountain.com), Caberfae Peaks in Cadillac (caberfaepeaks.com) and numerous other resorts and hotels.

BACK TO NATURE

In a region flush with state forests, state parks and a national park, you know the camping is going to be awesome. Add to that an abundance of well-kept, homey private campgrounds and you’ll always have a place to pitch a tent—or hook up your RV. In Benzie (visitbenzie.com), Manistee (visitmanisteecounty. com), Ludington (pureludington.com) and Cadillac (cadillacmichigan.com), you’ll find rustic sites, backcountry sites, sites within a stone’s throw of inland lakes and Lake Michigan and sites on rivers that you can reach by canoe or kayak. HAVE A DOG? HAVE FUN!

Your best friend has plenty of room to ramble in this region of forests and beaches. Here are some popular Fido-friendly spots for outdoor fun. Remember, Michigan law requires dogs to be on 6-foot leashes in public. BY ALLISON JARRRELL

SLEEPING BEAR DUNES

There are several places in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore where dogs aren’t permitted due to sensitive ecosystems, such as piping plover nesting areas, so please be attentive to “no pet” signs. In the Benzie County portion of the park, pups are welcome in the Platte River Campground, as well as on all trails and beaches from the Platte River Campground north to Peterson Road, and from Esch Road north to the Lakeshore boundary near Empire.

MANISTEE

Enjoy some sand and sun with your pup at an array of dog-friendly beaches in Manistee County, including Lake Michigan’s North Beach Access, the dog park at First Street Beach, Magoon Creek, Portage Point Beach and Fifth Street Beach (outside the swimming area). North Point Beach in Onekama is also pet-friendly.

LUDINGTON

The Ludington area is full of dog-friendly outdoor rec opportunities—your furry friend will love checking out Ludington State Park and the Nordhouse Dunes (just be sure your pup isn’t in the swimming areas). Also, not to miss in Ludington, the beloved Loomis Street Dog Beach.

CADILLAC

If you’re headed to Cadillac with your canine companion in tow, head to Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park. This 92-mile linear trail state park runs from Cadillac to Comstock Park and is paved with asphalt, except for a 30-mile stretch between Sand Lake and Big Rapids, which is natural ballast and hard-packed gravel. (Note: dogs aren’t permitted in buildings or swimming areas.)
