SLEEPING BEAR DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE
The 71,000-glorious acres of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore spread over Leelanau and Benzie Counties, with the visitors center just north of Benzie County in Empire. In the Benzie area of the park you’ll find secluded beaches, quiet hikes through the forest, river mouths, ghost towns and of course much more. BEACHES
Esch Road Beach, off M22 in Benzie County’s northern reaches, makes for a legendary beach day. This idyllic spot is where shallow, sandy-bottomed Otter Creek emerges from its tree-lined banks into the wide-open blue of Lake Michigan. Head farther south to Peterson Road Beach, where the crowds thin and dramatic Lake Michigan views abound. Continuing south on M22 brings you to Lake Michigan Road, turn right to Platte Point Beach, the beautiful junction of the Platte River and Lake Michigan. On hot days in peak summer this is a busy beach, but get to know it off-season or in the early morning, and you’ll meet the shorebirds and other wildlife that play here. For a secluded adventure, head a couple more miles south down M22 and turn on the bumpy, narrow, vegetation-lined Boekeloo Road to nose around a vintage cabin (owned by the park service), and then hike into a world-class stretch of beach that few folks bother making it to.

LUDINGTON
With Lake Michigan to the west and Pere Marquette Lake to the south, water sets the rhythm of life in this beautiful coastal city. Sun out? Head to the beach. Sunset? Head to the beach. S.S. Badger pulling into the harbor? Head down and wave it in. Surf up? Grab your board. Craving fresh fish for dinner? Book a charter and fire up the grill. For après water activities, enjoy concerts in the park at the Waterfront Park Pavilion downtown, browse the Victorian-era shopping district, tour two historic lighthouses and eat up the burgeoning food and craft beer scene. pureludington.com.
The heart of downtown is Stearns Park, with 2,500 feet of sandy Lake Michigan beach (free parking!), concession stands, restrooms, a universally accessible walkway, picnic tables, grills, a playground, mini golf, shuffleboard and skateboard park—you have to know living is large in Ludington.
BEACHES
LIGHTHOUSES
One of Michigan’s finest state parks, Ludington State Park is home to two first-class beaches. The sugar-sand Lake Michigan beach stretches for nearly seven miles, and is presided over by the Lake Michigan Beach House. Outfitted with a full-service concession, this architectural gem helps make the day. The Hamlin Lake Beach offers calmer, warmer waters, and includes a picnic shelter, restroom, and a concession stand where you can rent canoes or kayaks for paddling the four-mile Canoe Trail. A new inclusive playground for children of all abilities is set to open at the Hamlin Lake Beach this summer. State Park Recreation Passport required, which may be purchased at the park. visitludington.com/statepark.

The 3,450-acre Nordhouse Dunes, with four miles of undeveloped shoreline, is the very definition of a Lake Michigan getaway. Ten miles of trails but no roads. Just two parking areas off US31 to ditch the car and hoof it in: Lake Michigan Recreation Area on the northern edge and Nurnberg Road at the southeastern corner. The Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area is managed by the Huron-Manistee National Forest. 800.821.6263, fs.usda.gov.
The striking Ludington North Breakwater Lighthouse was built in 1924 with an unusual shape to deflect the strong waves of Lake Michigan. Located at the end of a half-mile-long pier at Stearns Park Beach in Ludington; open to the public for tours from May 25 to September 3. splka.org. From the Pines Campground at Ludington State Park it’s a 1.8 mile sandy walk (or fat-tire bike it) to reach the black-and-white striped Big Sable Point Lighthouse. Dating to 1857, this is a much-photographed Ludington landmark. Climb the steep spiral staircase to the top of the light for an unforgettable view; explore the former keeper’s quarters, now a gift shop. Open daily from May 7 through October 28. splka.org.
