The Benzie Area Chamber of Commerce continues to stay informed on Healthcare endeavors and protocols, Housing developments, Resource collaboration, and Education initiatives. In 2020, as the pandemic forced people to work and learn from home, the need for quality high-speed internet in the area became much more apparent. The Benzie Area Chamber of Commerce created the Connect Benzie Broadband Initiative to bring awareness to the need

in our area. In working with the Benzie County Economic Development Authority, we now have a working committee in place to bring developers to the area and improve the broadband infrastructure.

For organizations, business owners and operators, the Benzie Area Chamber of Commerce is a partner for success in the area. We have been keeping our finger on the pulse of COVID-19 restrictions and financial resources. 2020 was an especially tough year for our local businesses; our efforts with the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance made it possible for Northern Michigan to ease restrictions separately from the rest of the State. We continue to monitor legislation to help our local businesses stay in compliance with Federal, State and Local regulations.

The Benzie Area Chamber of Commerce proudly promotes the State of Michigan – Support Local campaign. We have many resources on our website including Benzie-To-Go, Shop-Benzie, and Giving-Back-ToBenzie pages for finding local restaurants, retail stores and non-profit organizations in our area.

Living and working in Benzie County certainly has its perks; our Agro-Tourism based economy has a lot to offer for both residents and visitors to play in the area. Outdoor recreation is a huge industry in one of “America’s Most Beautiful Places”; there is plenty to do all year round.

The stunning vistas, crystal blue waters and sandy beaches are spectacular destinations for all ages. Our culinary culture is as diverse as it is delicious.

Watson Benzie named Business of the Year What’s a car without a person driving it?

Building it, maintaining it, cruising in it? No matter the make or model, it’s the person inside that gives any vehicle the life, the direction, the plan, the map, the gas. And that’s exactly how it is at Watson Benzie in Benzonia, named this year’s Outstanding Business of the Year by the Benzie Area Chamber of Commerce.

It’s the people that make it happen. We asked the staff at Watson Benzie, which sells and services Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram and Fiat vehicles, what makes this car dealership run. It was, shall we say, a joy ride.

FIRST, A PITSTOP WITH HEARTSTRINGS (AND SNOW TIRES).

KEVIN GROCHOWALSKI, SERVICE MANAGER: “A single mother, who had just moved here, came in during the first major snowstorm of the year. She wanted to get her tires rotated so that she might get more traction. The employees, seeing that her tires were not safe to even drive on, knew she needed something more. And, after learning that the customer barely had enough to cover the tire rotation, they pooled their money and bought her a set of four new snow tires!

“And that sums up the people who make Watson Benzie what it is. And, it’s not unusual. In fact, we’ve had two instances of employees stepping up and using their own hard-earned money to help customers in the last 30 days.”

NEXT, A TRIP TO THE INTERSECTION OF LIFE AND WORK. TOM STAPLETON, JR., CONTROLLER: “At the heart of Watson Benzie is owner, Derek Watson. One employee, more than a few years ago, was building a home that was completed during the last week December. The timing of the move wasn’t great because of all the responsibilities at work that needed to be finished by the end of the year. Unbeknownst to the employee, Derek arranged to have Two Men and a Truck help with the move… and that employee was me! That is just one of the many, many examples of this company helping employees that I have witnessed over the last 20 years here.”

AND WHEREVER THE ROAD LEADS, THERE’S A CHANCE YOU’LL KNOW SOMEONE ALONG THE WAY. KAREN SILER, TITLE CLERK: “Benzie County is a small community where word of mouth (good and bad!) spreads quickly. When you have a business like Watson Benzie, who gives to the schools, churches, festivals and benefits, your name is out there for all to see. And I believe that is why our community is loyal to us in return, in the best ways. As an employee, I’ve experienced their generosity firsthand. When your employer is good to you, you want to do a good job for them, and by doing a good job for the company, the customers get the caring experience they deserve.”

AND, TURN DOWN THE RADIO, LET’S LISTEN IN ON THE PERFECT SMALL-TOWN LIFE. JAKE FOSTER, PARTS ADVISOR: “I enjoy our customers! I get to help customers make their new purchase their own, and with the Jeep Wrangler being so popular, that job is pretty easy and rewarding, whether we are putting on a lift kit, wheels and tires, or just doing simple splash guards or rubber floor mats.”

And what about the gang, in the backseat, along for the ride?

“For the most part, we are all hard-working, happy people. The Watson family provides turkeys for all the employees, throws amazing holiday parties, and buys livestock from the local 4-H kids to split with the families at the dealership. Those are just some of the extra things that the Watson family does for the Watson Country family.”

AND NOW LET’S PUT THE GUY WHO TURNS THE IGNITION EVERY MORNING, INTO THE DRIVER’S SEAT. DEREK WATSON, OWNER: “Our commitment is to give back to the community in as many ways as we can. Our teams serve our customers’ needs in a very professional and positive manner. And we like being a small-town business that can offer a big-city inventory with our four locations (Benzonia, Ludington, Rockford and Manistee). In 2020, we will continue to raise the bar even higher on the level of customer service we are able to provide to our thousands of customers, and we are excited to meet all our new customers to show them the difference Watson Country makes!”

RISE AND SHINE BENZIE’S SUNRISE ROTARY CLUB MAKES AN IMPACT Rotary. It might bring to mind a group of old guys sitting around a room, yes? But Rotary Clubs are a different breed nowadays. And Benzie Sunrise Rotary, the winner of the Chamber’s “Community Impact Award,” offers a perfect look at what today’s new (improved, active, amazing, far-reaching, education-focused) Rotary looks like.

Let us introduce Dave Wynne, president, and Valerie Gerhart, president-elect. These two head up this 20-year-old chapter that has 50-some members. Raising over $30,000 a year, the club pours funds, manpower, energy, love and enthusiasm into the people (and the kids, oh the kids!) of Benzie County. Here, this twosome offers insight on what makes Rotary the treasure it is.

What would people be surprised to learn about today’s Rotary?

Dave: It truly is an action-oriented group of people, not just a bunch of old guys going to a meeting!

Valerie: The Benzie Sunrise Club is about 60% men and 40% women.

There are more and more women participating.

Dave: We’ve actually had more female presidents in the last 10 years than men. (Val will follow me!) We have a lot of new retirees and working members. Younger retirees have both the time and energy to help others, and we welcome new members of all ages.

What about those who work 9-to-5? How has Rotary changed for them?

Dave: Rotary has worked on becoming a place where working people can still have the opportunity to help. A member might work full-time, but can still find time to volunteer 3 hours on one project.

That’s perfect! The club meets at 7:30 a.m. (sunrise!) on Tuesdays, with the idea that the working members can head back to work by 8:30. And Rotary attendance guidelines have relaxed. Weekly attendance used to be required, but now members have more flexibility.

What is your favorite Rotary program?

Dave: One of my first activities was doing Healthy Harvest. A farmer up in Maple City had extra potatoes. We were able to harvest a couple thousand pounds of potatoes that were given to area food banks

and distributed locally right away. Two hours and what a difference that made for families! This is a perfect example of something a working person can squeeze in —only a couple of hours—and you can see the results of that work immediately. Also, it’s fun!

Valerie: I love reading to the 1st graders. All classes in the district have a Rotarian read to them three times a year and each time we have free books for the students to pick from. I also enjoy the 7th grade Service Above Self Day when we divide all of the Benzie Central 7th graders into small work groups and take them to various sites in the community to do clean-up projects. Last year we had them on the beach!

How far does Rotary reach?

Dave: We do dozens of local programs, but we also do international programs, too. Last year, we did “Pints for Polio.” Stormcloud Brewing in Frankfort donated $1 for every pint of beer sold during Beer Week.

We matched it, as did the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. We raised $8,000 for polio care in other countries.

Why should someone get involved with Rotary?

Valerie: I’m a retired school counselor and although I was ready to be done with day-to-day responsibilities, I was not ready to walk away from young people. Working with the Benzie Central students and staff is really one of the best parts of the club.

Mark your calendars! Two of Rotary’s biggest fundraisers are held every June: June 6: Bike Benzie Up North starts and ends at Crystal Mountain Resort in Thompsonville. The event draws 300 cyclists, about a third of whom come from outside of the area. This year, they are considering adding a gravel road race. Riders choose from routes of 100, 62, 45 or 30 miles.

June 14: The annual Golf Outing is moving to Interlochen Golf Course this year. Funds benefit area youth programs.

We are proud to be a member of the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance, a collection of nine partnering Chambers of Commerce and six associate members. Collectively the Alliance has become the voice that aggressively addresses the issues facing our businesses and maximizes the political influence of over 7,500 multi-county chamber members.

In 2020, the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance had numerous accomplishments that advanced the development of rural economic development policy and various legislative initiatives.

Specifically: • Advocated for several COVID-19 initiatives to assist businesses.

• Launched the rural housing payment in lieu of taxes program.

• Created rural business incentive tiers.

• Developed rural talent relocation and remote worker tax credit.

• Launched the employer assisted housing tax credit.

• Launched the Rural Affairs and Development (RAAD) campaign to create a rural cabinet-level position within the Governor’s administration.

• Launched and grew regional coalition to advocate for RAAD and rural development policy.

Benzie Schools are Building Futures

If there’s one thing that can be said about Frankfort-Elberta Area Schools, it’s that everyone gets a chance to play—no matter what their age.

It’s not just the kids who get to play sports (they all can), or the kids who march in the band (come, fall into step) or the kids in theater (welcome to the stage). It’s also the people who live near the tight-knit school of just 473 students who get to play, too.

“Everyone shows up! Our games and school plays are packed, and our band concerts are full,” says Jeff Tousley, superintendent of FrankfortElberta Area Schools (FEAS). “The school is the centerpiece of our town.”

He emphasizes the fact that, yes, every student gets a chance to participate at their schools.

“And they won’t be standing idle,” he adds. “They will be involved.

Athletics, band, plays—you get an opportunity to be a part of it all, unlike bigger districts.”

Despite its smaller enrollment, FEAS offers a wide range of programs.

There are hands-on programs like an aquaponics farm (where students farm fish and vegetables—think, tilapia and kale!), plus dual enrollment programs and advanced placement classes. And for the youngest: FEAS now offers three preschool classes, with 50 little ones already enrolled.

Tousley says that for him and his staff, it’s about creating programs big enough to build futures, yet small enough to build relationships.

“If you tell someone you graduated with a class of 38 students, they won’t believe you,” Tousley says with a laugh. “Here, everyone knows everyone.”

Class sizes typically range from 15 to 27 kids, he said, but one of the advanced math classes has only 5 kids in it. “It’s part of what we

can do here,” he said. “We are fortunate to be able to meet the needs of our students.”

Neighboring district, Benzie County Central School, hosts over 1,350 students and might just be (most definitely!) spotted during one of their “Red Outs” events—when students and community members display their Husky gear in full force.

“Benzie pride is everywhere!” says Amiee Erfourth, superintendent of Benzie County Central School. “We have a sense of belonging here. It’s easier to have connections in a smaller community, and that’s an inherent benefit of going to a school district like Benzie Central.”

This year, the school is offering a couple of new programs. One, they now have VEX robotics competition teams at the middle and high school levels. And, two, they have rolled out the new Benzie Early College program.

“Students now have access to attend a ‘13th year’ on campus at Baker College, free of charge,” Erfourth says.

Benzie students can earn up to an associate’s degree and/or up to 60 transferable credits in a wide variety of programs, all paid for by the district.

The district also offers AP classes, vocal music, instrumental music, visual arts, athletics, and interscholastic competitive programs such as Science Olympiad and robotics.

“Overall, Benzie provides opportunities that are often found in larger schools, but in the most beautiful region of Northern Michigan,” Erfourth says.

Northwestern Michigan College At NMC, you can earn a degree or certificate in more than 80 academic programs, from accounting to welding.

Annually, more than 50,000 learners visit four Traverse City campuses for a credit or non-credit class, professional training and development, or to see an exhibition at the Dennos Museum Center. Affordability is a cornerstone of the college, whose tuition is less than half that of a public four-year university. NMC also offers residence halls and a vibrant student life. The college is nationally ranked for its short-term study abroad program, veterans services and several specialties, including the Great Lakes Maritime Academy and maritime technology, aviation and unmanned aerial systems, and culinary. Mom-and-pop cabins follow the Platte’s path through the county, in Honor, and other little towns along the way. And mom-and-pop cabins are what people come to Benzie for, the word-of-mouth, the know-how, the history that living here for a lifetime brings.

THE PLATTE The Platte River starts near the county line just above Lake Ann and snakes its way through the county before widening out into Lake Michigan, some 30 miles later.

The Platte River is probably best known for the tubing, canoeing and kayaking enjoyed on the beautiful bends it makes through the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Locals often make a day out of it, and visitors can rent equipment at the liveries. It’s a must-do summer tradition for many families in the area.

The river also winds through the state’s main salmon hatchery. The Platte River Fish Hatchery is open daily to the public and has a resident bald eagle nest, complete with a live camera feed from 100 feet above.

And the Platte loves its fishermen—a variety of businesses have been borne from knowing the salmon runs, the tastes of rainbow and brook trout at the end of the line… from the gear needed to wade in and make

LAKE ANN On the lake, it’s quiet, but surrounded by homes and families. Lake Ann is a tiny town that has everything from a brewery with live music, to a trail and rustic campground where a getaway is truly that—you might not see another soul. A small powerboat pulling a tuber or two is enough to make one look up in surprise. Small fishing boats use the boat launch off Reynolds Road (incidentally, this road is believed to be the county’s most water-loving road: It accesses 14 of the county’s 58 lakes, plus 2 creeks and 2 rivers!). The town and the businesses are all tied to that blue-green gold in some way.

CRYSTAL LAKE Crystal Lake is the county’s best-made mistake. In 1873, an effort was made to build a canal to connect it to Lake Michigan, but when a dam failed, Crystal Lake lost 25% of its volume.

The result? Over 20 miles of sandy beach exposed around the lake, where some 1,100 cottages and resorts now reside on a slice of paradise.

Nowadays, the lake level is controlled by a dam at Outlet Creek that flows into the Betsie River, and onward into Betsie Bay and Lake Michigan.

Within a block of Crystal Lake, in Beulah, you can buy dinner, furnish your home or buy a bike to ride the rail-trails.

THE BETSIE The 54-mile long river is mostly within Benzie County (which takes its name from a variant pronunciation of the river) and flows into Lake Michigan between Frankfort and Elberta.

Every fall, you can find a steady march of people going to see the salmon trying to breach the Homestead Dam on the Betsie River. The dam, which is now mostly removed, now serves as a lamprey barrier and has been renamed “Homestead Falls” by some. Every fall, a plethora of fly fishermen can be seen trying their hand at snagging dinner with nets out to scoop up the gorgeous fish, drawing the attention of those who come to watch.

It’s a thing. And it’s life in Northern Michigan.

LAKE MICHIGAN Here, the place where our rivers and lakes ultimately find themselves.

Many of the businesses in Benzie County owe their livelihood to the lake’s versatility—both its harshness and its beauty. There are resorts, campgrounds, cottages and entire downtowns built within sight of the endless Great Lakes waves.

Frankfort boasts a pier that harbors its fishermen (charters, another beloved business in Benzie), while also providing a destination-worthy jumping spot for kids in swimsuits, and brave parents too! The town has blossomed into a place not only to retire, but also to raise families.

Festivals and renovations downtown have put Frankfort back on the map, perhaps with a little help from the landmark mineral spring fountain down by the post office.

A hike on “Old Baldy” dune trail in Arcadia Dunes is the perfect way to appreciate the breadthof Lake Michigan, how so many have come to live and build here. The trail is just north of Arcadia’s Inspiration Point on M-22’s scenic overlook. (The runner-up for most water-loving road is M-22, which comes close to 12 lakes and crosses over two rivers.)

Otter Creek, Esch Beach and Peterson Beach are all little in-roads along the 25 miles of Benzie County shoreline that give visitors and locals what they came for: lake time!

LAKE EFFECT Ah yes, lake effect—snow that is! Ski resorts, snowsport businesses and snowmobiling industries grow from the wonders of lake effect snow covering Northern Michigan for sometimes as much as 6 months out of the year. Thompsonville boasts one of the highest points in the county, and hence a destination ski resort, while tiny towns like Copemish and Honor flourish when the 135 miles of snowmobile trails in Benzie County are groomed (December 1-March 31, weather permitting). You can even catch a fat bike or ski race or two in the county, sponsored by dozens of businesses.

In all, Benzie County boasts 58 lakes, 4 rivers, 5 creeks, 1 Great Lake and countless perfect, sunny, snowy, summer, fall, winter and spring days to enjoy them.. There is without a doubt, water, water everywhere!

Benzie Communities BENZONIA The commerce epi-center of Benzie County, located along US 31 gives locals and visitors alike a diverse essential business selection. Many industrial facilities, non-profit businesses, and retailers are conveniently located in the village, as well as a wealth of natural resources.

BEULAH Located on the shores of beautiful Crystal Lake, Beulah is a quaint small town.

Take in a gorgeous sunset on the sandy public beach that spans the length of the village or hop on the Betsie Valley Trailway to explore the area on foot or by bike.

ELBERTA On the southern shores of Lake Betsie is the historic town of Elberta. Once known for its peach farms, this quiet community thrives with an antique shop, a day spa, and many dining establishments. The narrow causeway divides the mouth of the Betsie River and is a boon for fisherman and water sports enthusiasts alike. There is plenty of nature to explore at the Elberta Dunes South Natural Area and Betsie River Wildlife Refuge.

FRANKFORT Some would say the birthplace of Benzie. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Betsie Lake, Frankfort was once a historical maritime port.

Boasting a Coast Guard station and two lighthouses, Frankfort is rich with nautical culture. Many original buildings still stand in its beautiful walkable town including many shops, galleries, restaurants, a historic theater, and a newly renovated art center.

HONOR The gateway to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Honor has both history and character. Home to the National Coho Festival celebrating the birthplace of freshwater salmon in the Great Lakes, Honor is recognized for its diverse fishing allure (pun intended). You can also take a step back into time by spending your summer nights at the always family-friendly Cherry Bowl Drive-In, a past winner of Project Drive-In sponsored by Honda.

THOMPSONVILLE Thompsonville is a familiar destination for seasonal recreation. The highest point in Benzie County boasts an award-winning ski resort and miles of snowmobile, cross-country skiing, and snow-shoeing trails. Once the snow melts away, one can spend time on one of two world-class golf courses or floating down the Betsie River. When the day is done, take in an evening at the area’s only sustainable spirits distillery and farm or take in a delicious meal at the local tavern.

LAKE ANN A close knit community and a picturesque small town, Lake Ann has that special draw for locals and visitors. The local grocer boasts a sign that states “if we don’t have it, you don’t need it”; and they are right. Make a pass over the historic covered bridge or take a cruise around the lake to take in the sights.

Many travelers visit the local rustic campground and access the miles of hiking and biking trails. Who says small towns don’t have a night life? Take in a pizza, grab an ice cream cone and stop by the local brewery to take in live music on their gorgeous outdoor stage.
