Dreaming of a beachy getaway?

The usual wish list: miles of silky sand, sparkling blue water, cosmic sunsets, and starry nights? Look no further. Along its 80-some miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, the beautiful Benzie, Manistee and West Shore region is bursting with public beaches in all their glorious manifestations. Find them bustling and amenity-filled in Ludington State Park, downtown Manistee and downtown Frankfort. If solitude is what you crave, there is plenty of that. Your private sandy Lake Michigan dune-for-a-day might await in the 7,300 feet of undeveloped Lake Michigan at the Nordhouse Dunes, for example, or deep in the Arcadia dunes (a k a C.S. Mott Nature Preserve). And it seems like there is no end to the private dune nooks along the quiet, tawny southern stretches of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Where there are beaches there are beach towns—relaxed medleys of old timey mom ‘n’ pop establishments and upscale shops, eateries and galleries. You’ll find marinas galore, as well, where you can rent a boat or charter a fishing trip. In the evening (on those nights where you’re not having a beach bonfire!) shake the sand out of your hair and take in an outdoor concert, a microbrew pub or a movie at a small town theater (or the Cherry Bowl Drive-In in Honor!). Say beach and we’ll say Benzie, Manistee & West Shore!

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Spilling along the coast of Leelanau and Benzie counties for 35 miles, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a national treasure embracing 71,000 acres of sand dunes, Lake Michigan shoreline, inland lakes, rivers, forests and meadows. While the park’s visitor’s center is just north of the Benzie County border in the town of Empire, you don’t truly know this park until you wander down scenic M22 into the Benzie County southern tier. Just south of park headquarters, you’ll find Esch Road Beach, an idyllic spot where shallow sandy-bottomed Otter Creek emerges from its tree-lined

banks into the wide-open blue of Lake Michigan. Want to castaway for a day? Head farther south to Peterson Road Beach, where you’ll find thin crowds and dramatic Lake Michigan views. Continuing south on M22 brings you to Lake Michigan Road, turn right to Platte Point Beach, the beautiful junction of the Platte River and Lake Michigan. On hot days in peak summer this is a busy beach, but get to know it off-season or in the early morning and you’ll meet the shorebirds and other wildlife that play here. For a secluded adventure, head a couple more miles down M22 and turn down bumpy, narrow, vegetation-lined

Boekeloo Road to nose around a vintage cabin (owned by the park service) and then hike into a world-class stretch of beach that few folks bother making it to. Favorite Sleeping Bear activities in the southern tier include canoeing or tubing the picturesque Platte River (see page 14); fishing in the solitude of Loon Lake, Bass Lake and Otter Lake (nonmotorized boats only); and, of course, camping at the popular Platte River Campground (make reservations at 877.444.6777). For maps, visitors pass information and more: Philip A. Hart Visitor Center 9922 W. FRONT ST., EMPIRE, 231.326.4700, NPS.GOV/SLBE.

Trails

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: Some 100 miles of designated trails wind through woods, wetlands, meadows, shoreline, sand dunes and past jaw-dropping vistas. In Benzie County, find the Platte Plains Trail, a gentle 14.7-mile network of loops that begin near the Otter Creek beach and wind through pine-oak-aspen woods, past sweet Bass Lake, along Otter Creek, and by three views of Lake Michigan. Farther south, the Old Indian Trail system follows two loops, each about 2.5 miles long, to a magnificent Lake Michigan beach. For maps, visitors pass information and more: Philip A. Hart Visitor Center, 9922 W. FRONT ST., EMPIRE, 231.326.4700, NPS.GOV/SLBE. Arcadia Dunes:

Four trail systems add up to 15 miles of trails that carve through Lake Michigan dunes and forests, and past adjacent working farms at this stunning preserve. Hike them all, then bring your mountain bike to Dryhill Trails and Camp Trail. Bird watchers note the Sleeping Bear Birding Trail. Multiple parking areas and trailheads; find maps online. 231.929.7911, GTRLC.ORG.

Manistee River Trail: This nearly 9-mile looped trail skirts the

ANGELA BROWN

east shore of the Manistee River and past an 8-foot waterfall, through scenic rolling hills and over the largest wooden suspension bridge in Lower Michigan, at the site where the trail hooks up with the renowned North Country Trail. Find trailheads at Seaton Creek or Red Bridge campgrounds. 231.723.2211.

Michigan Legacy Art Park: Art meets earth at this wooded 30-acre preserve at Crystal Mountain Resort. A gentle 1.6-mile trail is scattered with 43 sculptures and a rustic outdoor amphitheater. Great spot to bring kids (they love the fort sculpture). New for 2015: a barrier-free arrival area and 1,200-foot trail. 12500 CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN DR., THOMPSONVILLE, 231.378.4963, MICHLEGACYARTPARK.ORG.

Nordhouse Dunes: A 6.5-mile looped trail (accessed by the Nurnberg and Lake Michigan Recreation Area trailheads) through the 3,450-acre Nordhouse Dunes wilderness area of the Manistee National Forest includes 2 miles along the dune-lined Lake Michigan shore before circling back through the forest. 231.723.2211.

Big M Trail: The well-marked path is comprised of loops running through the rustic and wild Huron-Manistee National Forest; sections like the Lumberjack and Corkpine are easier, while Catamount and Sky Pilot are hillier and more challenging. Located 18 miles east of Manistee and seven miles west of Wellston; find the trailhead 3.5 miles south of M55 on Udell Hills Road. SKIBIGM.ORG.

Betsie Valley Trail:

This 22-mile path from Frankfort to Thompsonville meanders past Betsie Lake, Betsie River and Crystal Lake. The trail from Frankfort to Beulah is nonmotorized. Road bikers and roller bladers will want to stay on the paved six miles from Frankfort to Molineau Road—the rest of the trail is compacted aggregate. Find trailhead and parking: 10th Street, Frankfort, betsievalleytrail.org. Rent bikes at Beach Nut Surf Shop. 1100 MAIN ST., FRANKFORT, 231.357.0690, BEACHNUTSURFSHOP.COM.

Ludington State Park: Seven trails add up to 18 miles of hiking (and 6+ miles of beach to wander) at this crown jewel of state parks located on Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake. Two standouts are the 3-mile Lighthouse Trail that leads to the Big Sable Point Lighthouse (open daily May through October). Most of this trail is hard-packed gravel and bike-able—rent bikes at the nearby concession building. The mile-long, wheelchair accessible Sable River Trail leads to the Hamlin Dam and the Big Sable River. State Park Recreation Passport required. 231.843.2423, visitludingtonstatepark.com. Beaches Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: With 35 miles of main-

land Lake Michigan shoreline, beaches abound in this national park. In Benzie County, find the three fabulous beaches below located down secondary roads off M22: Otter Creek Beach off Esch Rd.; Platte Point Beach off Lake Michigan Rd.; Peterson Beach off Peterson Rd. For maps, visitors pass information and more: Philip A. Hart Visitor Center, 9922 W. FRONT ST., EMPIRE, 231.326.4700, NPS.GOV/SLBE.

Crystal Lake Beach, Beulah: This public beach in downtown Beulah on sparkling Crystal Lake is one of the best in-town beaches around. With its marked swimming area, the beach is perfect for kids, who also enjoy splashing at the adjacent mouth of Cold Creek. In addition to several hundred feet of sandy beachfront, the waterfront park also has a beach house, tennis courts and a playground. A great spot to catch the annual Fourth of July fireworks over the lake. On Lake Street north of Commercial Avenue. VISITBENZIE.COM.

Frankfort Lake Michigan Beach: This fabulous in-town swath of sand and surf is a great spot to watch surfers—or become one yourself. Take a post-swim stroll along the pier toward the breakwater lighthouse. VISITBENZIE.COM.

Point Betsie Beach: This iconic beach is beloved by locals for many reasons, not the least of which being that it’s home to the beautiful Point Betsie Lighthouse— one of the most photographed lighthouses in the Midwest. POINTBETSIE.ORG.

First Street Beach, Manistee: A dreamy slice of sand with a concession stand, volleyball and tennis courts, and a half-acre fenced-in dog park where you can let Fido roam leash-free. (Note: All

of Manistee’s beaches are handicapped accessible.) Access the Riverwalk (and find parking) at Memorial Park. Located at the west end of First Street, on Lake Michigan. VISITMANISTEECOUNTY.COM.

Elberta Beach, Lake Michigan: Wedged between the big lake and a gigantic dune ridge, the beach here gets wild waves, making it a thrilling spot for a swim (and popular among body surfers and wave jumpers). Compared to the Lake Michigan beach in nearby Frankfort, it’s less crowded here; high bluffs lend an additional feeling of privacy. VISITBENZIE.COM.

Charles Mears State Park, Pentwater: This 50-acre space on Lake Michigan is just a few blocks from downtown Pentwater, and it includes a beautiful swath of fine white sand adjacent

to the harbor pier; swim and sun here by day, and come back for the knockout sunsets. Picnic tables, beach volleyball, a playground, public restrooms and beach store vending snacks and toys. State park recreation passport required. 400 WEST LOWELL ST., PENTWATER, 231.869.2051, MICHIGANDNR.COM.

Ludington State Park, Ludington: This stunner of a state park is home to two beautiful beaches. The sugar-sand Lake Michigan beach stretches for nearly seven miles, and is a wonderful spot to catch a sunset; Hamlin Lake Beach offers calmer, warmer waters, and includes a picnic shelter, restroom, playground and a concession stand where you can rent a paddleboat or canoe for noodling around in the water. CHARTER FISHING: The waters off the coast of Manistee,

MORGAN TAYLOR

Benzie and Mason counties are renowned for being among the most productive fisheries anywhere on Lake Michigan, boasting heavyweight trout, steelhead, Coho and Chinook salmon. Charter fishing outfits are numerous in port towns up and down the coast, as well as inland, where the region’s crystal-clear rivers and streams offer big rewards (the state record brown trout, at 41 pounds, was caught in the Manistee River; the state record walleye was caught nearby, at the mouth of the Pine). A charter fishing trip is a memorable experience, regardless of whether you return with the next record holder. Gather your friends, pick up a fishing license, bring a cooler for your catches, and don’t forget to dress appropriately for the weather. The majority of the area’s Lake Michigan charter fishing companies are based in Frankfort, Ludington and Manistee; search listings at the Michigan Charter Boat Association. MICHIGANCHARTERBOATS.COM.
