SLEEPING BEAR DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a national treasure embracing 71,000 acres of sand dunes, Lake Michigan shoreline, inland lakes, rivers, forests, meadows and relics of Native American and pioneer history. The park spreads from Benzie County into Leelanau County with the visitor center just north of the Benzie County border in the town of Empire. Here’s your guide to exploring the breathtakingly beautiful Benzie portion of the park. BEACH DAYS!
PADDLE
Bring all the fixings to make it a day at Esch Road Beach, off of M22 in Benzie County’s northern reaches. This idyllic spot is where shallow, sandy-bottomed Otter Creek emerges from its tree-lined banks into the wide-open blue of Lake Michigan. Head farther south to Peterson Road Beach, where the crowds thin and dramatic Lake Michigan views abound. Continuing south on M22 brings you to Lake Michigan Road, turn right to Platte Point Beach, the beautiful junction of the Platte River and Lake Michigan. On hot days in peak summer this is a busy beach, but get to know it off-season or in the early morning, and you’ll meet the shorebirds and other wildlife that play here. For a secluded adventure, head a couple more miles south down M22 and turn on the bumpy, narrow, vegetationlined Boekeloo Road to nose around a vintage cabin (owned by the park service), and then hike into a world-class stretch of beach that few folks bother making it to.
The Lower Platte River runs through the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, emptying into Lake Michigan at a spectacularly beautiful beach. This slow, family-friendly river is perfect for canoes, tubes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.
HIKE The Platte Plains Trail, a gentle 14.7-mile network of loops with a trailhead near Otter Creek beach. Trails wind through woods, past sweet Bass Lake, along Otter Creek, and by three views of Lake Michigan. Farther south, the Old Indian Trail system follows two loops, each about 2.5 miles long, to a magnificent Lake Michigan beach.
