Picture the Benzie, Manistee & West Shore area as a 75-mile corridor of beauty: long stretches of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline to wander or gaze at from a bluff; clear, clean rivers; marinas that fishing boats and yachts call home; bucolic rural highways that pass orchards, farms and farm markets. Now color this picture with delightful towns that match their timeless Up North feel with great restaurants, shopping and even breweries and wineries. SLEEPING BEAR DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE
Spilling along the coast of Leelanau and Benzie counties for 35 miles, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a national treasure embracing 71,000 acres of sand dunes, Lake Michigan shoreline, inland lakes, rivers, forests and meadows. While the park’s visitor center is just north of the Benzie County border in the town of Empire, you don’t truly know this park until you wander down scenic M22 into the Benzie County southern tier. GO TO THE BEACH! Bring all the fixings to make it a day at Esch Road Beach, off M22 in Benzie County’s northern reaches. This idyllic spot is where shallow, sandy-bottomed Otter Creek emerges from its tree-lined banks into the wide-open blue of Lake Michigan. Head farther south to Peterson Road Beach, where you’ll find thin crowds and dramatic Lake Michigan views. Continuing south on M22 brings you to Lake Michigan Road, turn right to Platte Point Beach, the beautiful junction of the Platte River and Lake Michigan. On hot days in peak summer this is a busy beach, but get to know it off-season or in the early morning, and you’ll meet the shorebirds and other wildlife that play here. For a secluded adventure, head a couple more miles south down M22 and turn on the bumpy, narrow, vegetation-lined Boekeloo Road to nose around a vintage cabin (owned by the park service), and then hike into a worldclass stretch of beach that few folks bother making it to.
HIKE The Platte Plains Trail, a gentle 14.7-mile network of loops with a trailhead near Otter Creek beach. Trails wind through woods, past sweet Bass Lake, along Otter Creek, and past three views of Lake Michigan. Farther south, the Old Indian Trail system follows two loops, each about 2.5 miles long, to a magnificent Lake Michigan beach.
PADDLE The Lower Platte River runs through the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, emptying into Lake Michigan at a spectacularly beautiful beach. This sweet, slow, family-friendly river is perfect for canoes, tubes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.

FRANKFORT This real-thing Lake Michigan beach town offers a fabulous stretch of sand and lively downtown, with a vintage movie theater, eclectic shops and restaurant options including Asian, Up North classic, microbrew hearty and wine-bar elevated. It’s all served up with an enchanting historic lighthouse pier tailor-made for sunset strolls. frankfort-elberta.com. DON’T MISS Frankfort Art Fair, August 19-20 in Market Square on Betsie Bay.
GO TO THE BEACH! Frankfort’s Lake Michigan Beach is a glorious in-town swath of sand and big water, where surfers head when the wind blows. With all the amenities of downtown a stone’s throw away, this is the place to be on a summer day. frankfort-elberta.com. Point Betsie Beach on Lake Michigan serves up a long stretch of shore, a classic freshwater dune landscape and the captivating Point Betsie Lighthouse—one of the most photographed lighthouses in the nation, according to locals. pointbetsie.org.
BIKE The 22-mile Betsie Valley Trail runs from Frankfort to Thompsonville, passing Betsie Lake, Betsie River and Crystal Lake. Road bikers and roller bladers will want to stay on the paved six miles from Frankfort to Molineau Road—the rest of the trail is compacted aggregate—beefier tires better. Find the trailhead and parking: 10th Street, Frankfort, betsievalleytrail.org. Rent Bikes: Beach Nut Surf Shop, 231.357.0690, beachnutsurfshop.com.
THEATER Going to the movies just feels more fun in the Garden Theater, a renovated gem that has served Frankfort since 1923. Showing first-run, indie, foreign and classic flicks year-round, plus the Frankfort Film Festival every October. 231.352.7561, frankfortgardentheater.com. The third week of July each year the Lakeside Shakespeare Theatre takes the outdoor stage at Frankfort’s Tank Hill. This summer they’ll perform Cymbeline July 14, 16, 18, 21, 23 and The Taming of the Shrew July 15, 17, 19, 22, 24. 188 Park Avenue. lakesideshakespeare.org.

ELBERTA Perched between peaceful Betsie Bay and a stunning Lake Michigan bluff, Elberta dishes up one of the region’s most sensational in-town beaches, plus a handful of eclectic shops and eateries. frankfort-elberta.com. DON’T MISS Solstice Festival, June 18. Celebrate the longest day of the year with live entertainment, kids’ activities, and wine, beer and food from local vendors.
GO TO THE BEACH! Wedged between the big lake and a gigantic dune ridge, Elberta Beach, on Lake Michigan, gets wild waves, making it a thrilling spot for a swim (and popular among body surfers and wave jumpers). It’s less crowded than the Lake Michigan beach in adjacent Frankfort, and Elberta beach’s high bluffs add a sense of privacy.

A crown in the Michigan state park system, Ludington State Park is home to two first-class beaches. The sugar-sand Lake Michigan beach stretches for nearly seven miles, and is a wonderful spot to catch a sunset; Hamlin Lake beach offers calmer, warmer waters, and includes a picnic shelter, restroom, playground and a concession stand where you can rent canoes or kayaks for paddling the fourmile Canoe Trail. State Park Recreation Passport required and may be purchased at the park. 231.843.2423.

The largest car ferry ever to sail Lake Michigan continues to be a fun, four-hour trip from Michigan to Wisconsin. Book passage to cut time off a car trip, or book a round-trip 48-hour mini cruise sans vehicle for a fun weekend bookmarked by the port towns of Ludington, Michigan, and Manitowoc, Wisconsin. For something really special, reserve your spot on the Badger for the Fourth of July Shoreline Cruise, which departs just before sunset for a fabulous view of Ludington’s waterfront fireworks show. 800.841.4243, ssbadger.com.
The 3,450-acre Nordhouse Dunes, with their four miles of undeveloped shoreline, are the very definition of a Lake Michigan getaway. Ten miles of trails but no roads. Just two parking areas off US31 to ditch the car and hoof it in: Lake Michigan Recreation Area on the northern edge and Nurnberg Road at the southeastern corner. The Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area is managed by the Huron-Manistee National Forest: 800.821.6263, fs.usda.gov.

Follow US10 west as it turns into Ludington Avenue, turn right onto M116 and drive north up to the Ludington State Park.
