Vacations in this beautiful region are shaped by stunningly blue water punctuated by orchards and charming small towns with big-city style eateries and boutiques. Did we mention adventures on a remote island? That would be to Beaver Island, Lake Michigan’s largest island located 32 miles off the mainland (and accessible only by boat or plane). And all of that blue water translates into Torch Lake and Lake Charlevoix—bodies of water that regularly garner national accolades. There’s also the meandering 75-mile Chain of Lakes (that includes Torch Lake) and miles and miles of Lake Michigan coastline. Rent a pontoon for a lazy float, park your towel on a Lake Michigan beach or purchase your ticket for the ferry ride to Beaver Island. And when the sun is sinking low, there’s a seat waiting for you at a fabulous restaurant, taproom or brewpub where you can relax and reflect on the best vacation you’ve ever had.

Charlevoix The Beautiful DON’T MISS: Venetian Festival, July 18–25—The 84th annual Venetian Fest will have it all, including live music, kids games, a boat parade on Round Lake, a local battle of the bands, a midway, two nights of fireworks, and much more. VENETIANFESTIVAL.COM.
Charlevoix the Beautiful, as this charming town bills itself, sits between Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan. Historic storefronts add to the city’s character, as do annual plantings of petunias that line Bridge Street (the city’s main thoroughfare). You won’t find big box stores in Charlevoix, but you will find an eclectic mix of locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries. The beautiful marina is adjacent to a waterfront park with a band shell for outdoor performances. VISITCHARLEVOIX.COM.
Biking Stretching nearly 26 miles from Charlevoix to Harbor Springs, the Little Traverse Wheelway (TRAILSCOUNCIL.ORG) passes more than a half-dozen roadside parks and occasional beaches with direct access to the water. Find the Charlevoix trailhead at Charlevoix Township Hall, 12491 Waller Road. Rentals at Revolution Bike & Boards. 102 MASON ST., CHARLEVOIX,

Getting to the Island
History
Round-trip fares to Beaver Island run approximately $50 on the ferry and $100 by plane. For details, check out the transportation companies.
In the mid-1800s, a renegade Mormon leader and self-anointed prophet named James Strang led 300 devotees to the island, where he ruled over his independent Mormon “kingdom” until his assassination by followers in 1856. Following Strang’s death, Irish immigrants established a new enclave on the island. By the late 1800s, 95 percent of the islanders were Irish, and Gaelic was the common language. (Of the 881 residents in 1880, there were 141 Gallaghers, 123 Boyles, and 90 O’Donnells.) Relics of both the Mormon and Irish communities still survive today: the Mormon colony’s former print shop is now a museum, and the island’s two Irish pubs are the only establishments open year round.
