Welcome! Each summer there’s a one-of-a-kind film festival in Traverse City. And each summer we invite a lot of filmmakers from all over the world to join us for the party. We’re pretty shy people, but the moment we tell them about Traverse City, it’s the easiest pitch in all of Hollywood. We tell them about the great mix of films we show—the best fiction, nonfiction, foreign, kids, shorts, and avant-garde films we’ve discovered in the past year. We tell them about the beautiful and historic venues we transform into world-class movie theaters: great big screens and sound in a 100-year-old opera house, a 90-year-old school auditorium, a 19th-century playhouse, a Roosevelt-era New Deal building, and a 1916 movie palace restored to its former glory (the State Theatre, celebrating its centennial year!). And we explain that these great festival theaters are all within walking distance in a truly remarkable small town that sits on a beautiful bay of Lake Michigan. Its thriving downtown is full of great restaurants, microbreweries, unique stores, and not one but TWO independent bookstores—all perfect places to stop and grab a bite or do a little shopping between movies.
Although the serene beauty of the area sure is nice, when it comes down to it, the biggest selling point about Traverse City is the people. The appreciative and open-minded audiences are second to none, and we have the world’s friendliest and most talented volunteers who give the festival its spirit and make it run like clockwork. And then there’s the feeling of connection and of being a part of something extraordinary, the magical transformation that overtakes the city for one marvelous summer week of moviegoing wonder. Tickets are half what they are at the big industry festivals, and many events—like the nightly outdoor films we show on a 65-foot screen by the water, movies all-day-every-day in our indoor venue The Buzz, the industry panels, interactive new media gallery, Kids Fest, and concerts from the area’s best musicians—are completely free. You can park your car and walk or take the free shuttle to any of our eight indoor venues. The festival is both a filmmaker’s and filmgoer’s dream. We’ve been at it for 11 years now, so if you haven’t been yet, now’s the time. We hope you get to experience it this summer. It is unlike anything you’ve ever done or seen. Cocktail for the Stars Every year Amanda Danielson, sommelier and co-owner of Traverse City’s much-loved Trattoria Stella, outfits a bar at the Filmmaker’s Lounge (in a loft above Front Street) with select beer, wine, spirits and a signature batched cocktail. Amanda calls this year’s potion Jitterbug Perfume, so baptized for the Tom Robbins novel of the same name. “Think Bingo Pajama, the sacred beet and high floral aromatics,” Amanda tells us. For the second year in a row, TCCF visitors can take in a movie on the Nauti-Cat, the largest commercial sailing catamaran on the Great Lakes, moored at Clinch Marina. A projector, two mast-high screens and first-class seats (for 35 moviegoers) under the Milky Way make this a heavenly venue. Tickets are refunded if the weather goes bad.

Q: What is it like to perform at the Traverse City Film Festival? Performing at the TCFF is an honor. The songs you perform before a movie are setting the tone for what that person is about to see, and it could very well be a movie that changes their lives, their hearts, their minds. That is a huge honor to be a part of. Q: You’ve been a performer at the Film Festival for many years. What have you seen change? How have you changed? I have been performing at the Film Fest since its beginning. During the first year, I received a lot of criticism because it was viewed as being aligned with Michael Moore’s politics. From the start, I was proud and excited as I knew it would be an incredible opportunity for the city. As the years have passed, it has become much less controversial and, as intended, it is truly an event that brings out the best in this community. I have been deeply affected by some of the movies I have seen. I have loved bringing my kids to the free movies at the Open Space and to Kid Fest. I have met and worked with some incredible talent in this town. It has been an overall incredible part of my life Q: What’s been your favorite performance? Why? I especially loved performing at the Open Space before the showing of Mary Poppins on the big screen one summer.
