WELCOME ! ON THE COVER: MICHAEL POEHLMAN; THIS PAGE: JEFF SIMONIS

At the festival, we're big fans of the Filmgoer, and not just because of the pretty pictures. We love the way it shines a light on the hidden gems of our home, one of the most beautiful places in the world: Traverse City. We are passionate about showing great movies on the biggest screens with the best sound, in world-class venues designed by the best in the biz, and filmmakers at the heart of it all. We love bringing people from all over the world to share one-of-akind experiences together. Hearing so many different languages spoken on Front Street, and watching people in line actively engaging in animated discussions, makes the festival a favorite time of year for so many of us. But one of the best things about the Traverse City Film Festival is that it happens in Traverse City, which truly is

the “Best Little City in the World.” We delight in lighting it up and showing it off at its brightest and best. We've always stayed true to one of the most important rules of the film festival: keep it walkable. We want movie lovers to feel that they are enjoying a week of great films on the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan together, in one place. For our 13th festival, because our largest venue is unavoidably closed for summer, we're expanding a bit beyond our normal borders. To temporarily replace Lars Hockstad and The Buzz at Central Grade School, we are introducing two new screens: Kirkbride Hall at the Grand Traverse Commons, and the newly renovated auditorium in Central High School. We'll be back to normal next year, but this year, we've set up expanded shuttle service to get you to these beautiful new spaces.

They are being transformed into world class movie theaters by the same technical geniuses who made the State Theatre, City Opera House, Old Town Playhouse, Bijou by the Bay, and our other venues the best places to see powerful, brave, bold, larger-thanlife stories that make us laugh, and sometimes cry, and always remind us of our common humanity. When you emerge from our cool, dark theaters, we hope you will be exhilarated by what you have seen, and passionate about the power we each hold within us to shape our world and future for the better. Enjoy the people you meet and the things you see in this wondrously unique place, and have a magical week sharing Just Great Movies.

NEW FILM FEST FUN FOR 2017

TOY HARBOR SUMMER HOURS M-SAT 10AM–9PM SUN 11AM-5PM

MORE BOUNCE HOUSE Last summer’s Sunday night bounce house at the Open Space was such a success (talk about a way to stretch your legs between flicks!) that TCFF staff decreed nightly bouncing for 2017. Choose from the moonwalk, jousting and bungee running—or do them all!

DOWNTOWN TRAVERSE CITY • 231-946-1131 CREATIVE & QUALITY TOYS SINCE 1984 •

DISCUSSION PANELS You betcha the panels will happen again this summer. This opportunity for visiting filmmakers to answer questions and swap stories will, however, be changed up a bit this summer in terms of times and venues. Check traversecityfilmfest.org for the schedule.

KIDS FEST Now here’s a refreshing change that our film festival shorties (as in kids, not films!) are sure to love. The Kids Fest is moving from the grounds of Central Grade School to Clinch Park, with its beach and splash pad.

TWO NEW VENUES Kirkbride Hall at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons makes its debut as a venue in 2017 (see more on page F5). This summer, too, look for the auditorium at Traverse City Central High School to be transformed into a first-rate movie theater!

LEONARD MALTIN Q&A Think you like movies? Try dedicating your life to them. That’s what Leonard Maltin has done for the past 50 years; maintaining his status as a go-to film critic and historian. He is best known for his widely used reference work° Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide and its companion volume° Leonard Maltin’s Classic Movie Guide.

COURTESY OF LEONARD MALTIN

Maltin is a special guest at this year’s Traverse City Film Festival. We had the chance to ask the renowned movie expert a few questions before he got into town. You've had an incredible career, even starting your own "fanzine" when you were just 15 years old. Where does your love for movies come from? When I was 12, I read a coffee table book called°The Movies°by Richard Griffith and Arthur Mayer (a classic history of American motion pictures), and that is what ignited the flame. What is your all-time favorite movie? Has to be Casablanca. What’s your favorite thing about film festivals like this? Discovering films I haven’t heard or read about before and

meeting movie lovers, whether they’re filmmakers, journalists or just enthusiasts. Good conversation is a prime ingredient for a great film festival. What are you looking forward to doing in Traverse City? This will be our first time in Traverse City, and we have heard such wonderful things about your city.° A friend recommended Don's Drive-In hamburgers and pies. If you had more time, what would you like to do/see while in Traverse City? I am still learning about Traverse City, but I’ve been told by reliable sources that I must try various versions of cherry pie during my stay, as well as the local fudge. I don’t know what else my family and I will be able to take in, but we see this as an adventure and can’t wait to be there.

Maltin will be doing a special Open Space introduction of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on July 27 (movie starts at 8 p.m.), and he’ll be recording his popular Nerdist Podcast, Maltin on Movies, with cohost Jessie Maltin and special festival guests, on July 30 at 9:30 am. Find Maltin's movie reviews on leonardmaltin.com, and listen to his weekly podcast: Maltin on Movies. —Kramer Schultz

KIRKBRIDE HALL MAKES ITS DEBUT This summer the curtain rises on a new Traverse City Film Festival venue: The circa-1880s Kirkbride Hall in The Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Built as the chapel for the Northern Michigan Asylum (later known as the Traverse City State Hospital), Kirkbride is adorned with elegantly designed clerestory ceilings and stained glass windows. The hall’s careful restoration in 2014 is the product of The Minervini Group, the team that since 2000 has been renovating the many stunning Victorian-Italianate buildings on the 63-acre village campus. Today, those buildings are filled with eateries, boutiques, galleries and a winery—the perfect setting for a movie theater. The Minervini Group welcomes the challenges of converting the hall into a comfortable theater—including adding ventilation for the audio equipment, curtains and a temporary projection booth. “When it was originally constructed in 1885, the chapel space was a technologically advanced gathering space for Northern Michigan,” says Raymond Minervini, a partner in the group. “It had central heating and cooling, and the marvel of electric lights. It will be amazing to see it enjoyed in 2017 with all of the advanced film and audio equipment for the telling of stories through moving pictures.”

SHAKE IT UP! The Traverse City Film Festival is toasting Michael Moore’s new one-man Broadway show, The Terms of My Surrender, with a cocktail of the same name. The show takes satirical aim at Donald Trump. Amanda Danielson (co-owner of Traverse City’s hip eateries Trattoria Stella and The Franklin) created the recipe that will be batched out at the Filmmaker’s Lounge. Traverse City Film Festival staff encourages you to make it at home—and to toast Michael’s Broadway success.

GET UP AND GO Summer feels good on the skin…like freshwater waves gracing the sand. The paradise of Northern Michigan is more than a pristine beach, a day at the spa, or wine tasting with friends. More than an early morning tee time, an emerging food scene, or Vegas-style gaming. It’s having all of those things at your fingertips. You won’t believe it if you haven’t seen it. Get up and go at GrandTraverseResort.com.
